"I got a mythic item!" Veyra giggled like a child opening Christmas presents early.
"And a great spirit. That has to be good, right?" I showed her my list, and she showed hers, putting all of the item drops next to each other.

I asked.
"No way. Isn't that over five million gold?" The look in her eyes was pure astonishment. That little stone right there was amongst the most valuable items that could ever drop. It did essentially what the name implied. It upgraded a legendary item into a mythic.
"We can upgrade your staff!" I gushed.
"Oh my god, and mythic boots? Those are for a mage, right?" She mumbled a soft noise. I had no idea what she said, but I hugged her, then grabbed her hand, laughing with her before hugging her again. We were goddamned bazillionaires and quite possibly the highest level players in the game now.
"What are the stats?" I asked. She made more soft chuckles, and opened the item details of the boots. Boots Of Tainted Frost Item Type: Mythic Boots Required Character Level: 301 Stats: +3000 Spell Power +150 Defence +15% Cooldown Reduction +5% Dark Damage To All Offensive Spells +5% Frost Damage To All Offensive Spells Abilities: Tainted Heaven (Active): Frost Magic shares affinity with Dark Magic.
Landing Dark or Frost Magic to enemies closer than 50 feet inflicts Heaven's Taint, slowing the target by 10% and lowering elemental resistances by 25% for ten seconds. Tainted Heaven can only be active when Frozen Heaven is inactive. Frozen Heaven (Active): Landing Dark or Frost Magic to enemies closer than 50 feet detonates Heaven's Taint, freezing air particles and dealing 5% of the target's missing health. The spell that causes detonation fully ignores elemental resistances.
Frozen Heaven can only be active when Tainted Heaven is inactive.
"Three thousand spell power for boots?" I laughed.
"Isn't that insane?" We studied the abilities for a good thirty seconds. Comprehending text was difficult due to the sheer shock of the situation, but I thought I understood how it worked.
"So you can alternate between two modes. The first leaves a mark on everyone you hit in close combat. The second mode detonates that for damage."
"Yeah, and the detonation fully ignores resistances." I kept staring at the boots for a moment. Holy fuck. That alone would make Veyra's build way more viable. Close range combat was her expertise. The effect was just about perfect. The resistance piercing effect would have destroyed Annath if Veyra had had these boots in the finals. She could now triple spec into time, frost, and dark magic. That was notwithstanding all the spirits she got.

"What about your stuff?" she asked.
"You got a mythic dagger!" Wait. I did? I double checked, having missed it. Sure enough, there it was, though it wasn't really a dagger. Sickle Of The Soul Harvester Item Type: Mythic Dagger Required Character Level: 302 Stats: +2500 Attack Power +10% Attack Power +500 Pure Defence Penetration +15% Critical Strike Chance +250% Critical Strike Damage Abilities: Haunt (Passive): Attacks haunt enemies with Dark Magic, dealing an additional 10% damage to the inflicted attack over 15 seconds.
If Haunt is already active when another attack lands, the bonus damage increases by 10%, up to 100%. Haunt fully ignores defence and elemental resistances. Harvester Of Souls (Passive): When Haunt's life drain exceeds the target's remaining health, landing a critical strike activates Harvester Of Souls. Execute target and gain 25% of target's All Stats for 30 seconds. Once again, the base stats were absolutely insane. Five hundred pure defence penetration was nonsense broken.
If a mage player had three hundred defence, for example, that would be mitigated straight to zero. For anyone with less than five hundred defence, I'd fully ignore their defence for massive damage. The ability itself sounded surprisingly balanced to me. Probably better than the nerfed Sablethorn, but it wasn't utterly imbalanced. At a glance, I would have preferred the old [Vital Strike]. If nothing else, stealing 25% of a target's stats after killing them was very good.
"That's very good, no?" Veyra said.
"It should fit your playstyle."
"Yeah, except it's a sickle," I said. I equipped it instead of Sablethorn. Just holding it felt a little iffy.
"The game calls it a dagger, but I've never fought with one of these."
"Can you learn it?"
"Eh, I'll have to test it out," I tried spinning it in my hands like I did with my daggers. The weight felt off, and the shape of the blade, curved like a crescent moon with sharp edges on both sides, almost made me cut myself. But it was a mythic item. Complaints weren't allowed. I could have gotten a mythic farming hoe, and I would have been happy with that.
"What about all the legendaries?" I asked, and we began checking out the rest of our items. We first teleported back to the safety of our guild hall just to confirm that nothing could kill us with so much stuff in our inventory. Asmophel's Scimitar was a fantastic duelist's blade with an execute effect. Mace Of The Colossus was a weaker version of The Godripper, but still a fantastic item for PvE. We sadly couldn't equip either, but there was one item that fit Veyra's build very nicely.
Blooming Magenta Item Type: Legendary Unique Event Ring Required Character Level: 274 Stats: +1000 Spell Power +15% Mana Regeneration +20, 000 Maximum Mana +5% Cooldown Reduction Abilities: Bloom (Passive): Casting a spell with a natural cast time of over two seconds grants 500 All Elemental Resistances for 5 seconds. The effect sadly didn't stack, but with the way Veyra cast spells, that essentially meant that she'd have five hundred extra resistances at all times.
Most of the spells she cast had a default cast time of over two seconds. She equipped that. We also received Sanguine Dirk, which was a dagger, but it really wasn't better than either of the other three options I now had. Overall, the only possible upgrade I got was Sickle Of The Soul Harvester. Veyra's build, though, was absolutely revived now. I looked at her character sheet and smiled at her new boots. Still, she had one more drop we hadn't used.
"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" I asked. She poured juice for herself. A little bit of disbelief remained on her movements, but we'd both calmed down. She took a sip with a thoughtful look.
"If you're talking about the mythic evolution stone…" she said.
"I don't know. I feel like I should take more time to think about this." I leaned back on the couch and crossed my feet on the leg rest.
"In my opinion, there's only one decision. You're obviously not speccing out of frost or time magic, right? Your build is very good now. There's only one weak part in it."
"You're suggesting to upgrade my staff to a mythic." I grinned.
"That would be insane, no? In a good way." She took another calm but hesitant sip.
"It would be amazing for my build, yeah. But the problem is, I'd lose a lot of money. The evolution stone will be worth much more than any item we could upgrade to a mythic." She was right, of course. There was a reason why evolution stones were the most valuable items in the game. Every player had gone through the pain of obtaining an item with the perfect ability for their build, only for the stats of the item to be way worse than what they were currently running. I had a few of those items as well.
Evolution stones could revive items like that. If I upgraded Oblique Transcendence to a mythic, for example, my build would suddenly be incredible. That was even more true for Veyra's staff.
"I'd say we should use it," I said.
"It's an investment just like the robe. We lost money buying it, but it earned us three mythics."
"Yeah…" Veyra said.
"I'll think about it. I'll need at least one night before any decisions."
"Smart," I said.
"Before that, we should also activate the spirits just in case we need to respec for those."
"Yep," Veyra said.
"Quisel told us to meet him in the underworld, right? The sewers or something?"
"Can't be worse than downtown New York." She snorted.
"Just wait until you see Bangkok."
"Oh, is it bad?" She shrugged. Jokingly, she said, "I don't know; I don't go outside. It's loud, though. I swear I hear all the mopeds even in VR. I preferred Sweden for sure."
"I can't wait," I said regardless.
"You got any spots to show me?"
"Eh," she said.
"I'll show you my bed, I guess." I blinked, caught off guard. She laughed hitting the couch with her right hand.
"I'm just kidding, Aiden. Or maybe…"
"Yes?" She smiled smugly at me before bursting out laughing again.
"You're flustered, Aiden." Her laugh was soft and nervous. I said, "You're the one whose face is red."
"Shut up," she said, still laughing.
"Let's just open these goddamn spirits." She grabbed my hand, and we teleported back to the city.
