The savory taste of meat fills my mouth as I tear away at my food. With my claw, I pick away at the meat that is stuck between my polar bear teeth. You would think that being dead would limit the number of inconveniences. Yet even after hundreds of years, I'm still picking meat out of that back tooth. By Zeita, if that ain't annoying, I don't know what is.
"Damn it! How many times did I tell you to clean up this path? It makes it extremely inconvenient to walk," Yellow says, walking in as straight a posture as a High Elf can.
"Apologies, Yellow. I really like the snow," I say as I kick the snow onto the fire pit in front of me.
"Yellow? You've been spending too much time with that Vashrin if you've started calling me that outside of the Chosen Hall, Blue," he says with his usual pompous attitude.
"Hofrin, what can I do for you?" I ask as he sits down on the wooden log.
"That's much better, Ursus. We have a problem."
"What kind of problem can we really have? We're dead," I remind him as I offer him some food. Hofrin politely declines.
"She's awake."
"Who woke her?" I ask with a groan. Did you know this text is from a different site? Read the official version to support the creator.
"I doubt it was any of us. Not even Eir would be so reckless as to wake her."
"I believe you. Not even Eir would put CJ in this situation, at least not after she spent so much time healing him. What are we going to do?" I ask as I tear another bite out of my food.
"As long as we keep her busy, she should go back to sleep soon enough. I need you to make sure that the Vashrin doesn't cause any trouble while we do. Also, it would be best if we kept you out of her sight. Wouldn't want her knowing what you did," he says, pointing at the bandages on my body.
"I'm almost fully healed. These are just flesh wounds."
"I don't know if I would call damage to your soul a flesh wound, but try to keep him out of the loop. Who knows what he might try if he realizes we aren't watching," Hofrin says as he stands up to leave.
"You should give the kid a chance. He's a good egg."
"No matter how good an egg you might think he is, that doesn't change the fact that he is not The Chosen One. We both know what a real Calamity looks like. Not one that's been weakened to the point you can't even call it one. He's been lucky. When he faces a threat that he can't handle, being a 'good egg' isn't going to help, Ursus."
"Maybe not, but that's not his fault. Is it?" Hofrin stands at the edge of my yard.
"No. I suppose not. Even if I don't like him, he's all we have. I can understand that." He disappears as soon as he leaves my yard. Can never be too honest, can he? The surroundings suddenly shift into that of the Chosen Hall. As I walk down the meeting table, I spot the large crystal wall that lies at the end of the hall. In the crystal, there is a solitary room bathed in low light. The snores of CJ echo as he sleeps. Sitting in my chair, I watch the screen.
"Guess it's just you and me for this one, CJ."
