He went deeper. There was nothing further to reclaim into his own floors. He had all thirty-one. He went into the house itself, which he had been careful about for eight months, keeping his awareness to the edges of it, the temperature and the sounds and the warmth of the people in it, not reaching further because it had not been his to reach into. He reached now. The house was old. Older than it looked. The bones of it, the stone beneath the foundations, the earth beneath the stone, held things.
Those weren't memories exactly. Something much more. The weight of years and seasons and the duration of having been, for a very long time, a place where something below was felt above without being named. He found the things written in the walls. Cecile had been right. They were not words, not in any language anyway. More like shapes pressed into the stone at the foundation level by hands that had understood, without being told, that pressing a shape into the stone of a house meant something.
They were the same shapes as the ward in the cloth bag, as the knots in the cord, as the notations in the oldest notebook. A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation. The family had been writing to him for generations. Without knowing what he was. Without knowing he was there.
Just knowing, the way they all knew, that something was below, that it mattered, that you treated it with the respect you'd give a thing that had chosen to be beneath you rather than the other way around. He followed the shapes through the foundations and through the stone, through the tons of years of them, and at the deepest point, directly below the kitchen, just below the table where June and Lauren and Cecile had spread the notebooks, he found what they had been building toward.
It was a floor, but not like his: something in between, a space that was neither fully his nor fully the house's but was, unmistakably, both. A threshold. He sat in it for a long time. He thought: thirty-one floors is not enough. He thought: but this is not thirty-two floors. This is something else. This is the place where the house and the dungeon meet, and it has been here, built slowly and carefully by women who left things in the dark, for three thousand years. He thought: this might be enough. He went back up.
Twenty-three days. He had work to do.
