He opened it on a Friday night, three weeks after finding it. He had been not-ready for three weeks. He had been busy, there was always something, the Ledger's silence was its own kind of preparation, and he had spent the time fortifying, reinforcing, thinking through every floor and every defense and every contingency. He had been thorough. He had been, he admitted to himself at two in the morning with June asleep and the house quiet, afraid. He went down to the twenty-third floor.
He stood in front of the book for a long time. Then he opened it. It was not long. Two pages. The handwriting was his, he knew it the moment he saw it, the same way you know your own voice in a recording even when it sounds wrong. He had written this. In the before-before, before the fire, before the decision. He had written it and locked it away and spent three thousand years becoming something that could not have read it without destroying what it said. He read it now. He did not move for a long time afterward.
He went back upstairs. This story has been stolen from Royal Road. If you read it on Amazon, please report it June was asleep. Cecile's light was still on. She stayed up late, reading, as old people sometimes do when sleep has become something they have to negotiate with rather than something that simply happens. Lauren's light was off. Gerald was in the wall. The house breathed. He sat on the windowsill. He did not tell anyone what the book said. Not yet.
Some things he'd carry alone for a while before they became something he could hand to someone else. What he would say, eventually, when the time came, was this: it was not a plan. It was not instructions. It was not a message to his future self about what to do or how to fight or what he was capable of. It was a list of things he had loved, written down before he decided the world didn't deserve his softness. Six things. Small things. Specific. The sound of rain on stone. The weight of a book.
The quality of light just before dawn. A fire in a cold room. The feeling of knowing someone was safe because of something you did. And a sixth thing he had not been able to name yet, that he had left a blank for, as though he knew he would find it eventually. The blank had a single word written in it now, in different ink, in handwriting that was not his. Mr. Grumpy, it said. He sat on the windowsill. He sat there for a very long time. System: Bond Strength: 99%. We read the book too.
We've always known about the book. We want you to know: the sixth thing. She wrote it in. Not recently, the ink is old, Vorrath. She wrote it in a long time ago. Before you found it. Before you were bound. She found the floor, somehow, in a dream or a sensing or just the way she finds things, and she wrote it in. She knew the blank was for her before she knew what you were. We thought you should know that. We thought that mattered.
