The fog killed the wind. Oska let the Grey Line drift while she made small corrections at the wheel. Moisture gathered on the rigging. Even Domrek spoke softly. After an hour, the fog opened around an island. It covered less than a mile. Trees grew over one low hill. A narrow wooden building stood behind a stone dock. Architect's Sight read both trees and building as stored memory.
"Living archive wood," Sable said.
"Precursor-grown. Every plank can hold a life." Oska brought the Grey Line beside the dock without tying it.
"One goes ashore." Domrek disliked this rule.
"The island decides," Oska said.
"Argue with it if you like." Kaito climbed down. An elf woman sat on a bench outside the archive. Her hair was long and grey. Age showed in her hands and face in ways elven bodies usually resisted. She read a book worn pale at the corners. Kaito stopped a few feet away.
"Tessara Moonveil?" She turned one page.
"My name is Kaito Haruki." This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.
"I know." Her accent came from nowhere in Eirath. She closed the book around one finger and looked up. [Tessara Moonveil] [Lore Sovereign] [Level 503 — Voluntarily Sealed] Then she spoke Japanese.
"You are ten years, three months, and fourteen days late." Kaito answered in the same language before his mind caught up.
"I didn't know I was expected."
"You never do." Hearing another human mouth form those sounds hurt more than he anticipated. For two months, Japanese had existed only in memories and Sable's translated voice.
"Who are you?"
"Tessara Moonveil. Eight hundred forty-seven years old. Retired adviser, failed archivist, and the person who has read this book four hundred times while waiting for you." She showed him the cover. No title appeared in any language. Architect's Sight found a memory seal keyed to his thread.
"What is it?"
"The last honest account of the Calamity."
"Which Calamity?" Tessara's expression suggested the question disappointed her.
"The one your people turned into a game." Behind her, the living archive reacted to Kaito's presence. Branches shifted without wind. Memories moved through the walls, thousands of lives waking in sequence. Sable spoke urgently.
"Architect, her registration predates the Arenval record. She knows the Original Layer." Tessara's eyes narrowed.
"Sable," she said in Japanese, "you took longer to speak than I expected." Kaito heard Sable lose every prepared response.
"You know her."
"I knew what she was before she chose a name." Tessara moved aside on the bench.
"Sit. Your friends may come ashore after Captain Oska stops pretending she does not know me." From the ship, Oska muttered something rude and reached for a mooring line. Kaito sat beside Tessara. She placed the sealed book between them.
"You have questions," she said.
"A few."
"Good. We can remove the easy ones before lunch." The archive door opened on its own.
