One second. That was all the time Zayn stayed silent. One breath too long while the 28 remained there, motionless behind the right-hand pillar, in the exact blind spot where neither Jonah nor Voss were looking yet. It was enough to make him understand something very simple: even now, even in a sabotage chamber, even while a human enemy was hiding only a few meters away, his first reflex had not been to warn the group. He had thought of himself first. Of Mira. Of her questions.
Of what his own reaction speed would reveal. The Throne had read him well. The presence moved. Not much. Just enough for the value to shift half a step in his perception. 28 A trained human. Not a hero. Not some monstrous mage either. Dangerous, above all here. Voss was still circling the node. Mira was reading the pillar. Elias was watching the exits. Jonah was facing the left arch. Lena was still staring at the dried blood at the base of the emptied support. None of them were looking in the right place.
Zayn made his choice. Not the right one. Not the noble one. The most profitable one. He did not point straight at the pillar. He did not say I sensed someone. He certainly did not hand Mira another reason to believe he could see things in the galleries he should never have been able to see. Instead, he pulled from his pocket the small shard of sacred metal he had torn from the warden below—a fragment with no real value, kept until now out of simple reflex—and threw it sharply toward the right-hand wall.
The piece of metal struck stone. A clean sound. Not loud. Perfect. The pillar almost exploded. A figure burst from the shadows with nervous speed, not refined enough to belong to a master swordsman, but more than enough to open the throat of anyone inattentive. The man wore black-and-gray ritual maintenance clothing, reinforced beneath the fabric with flexible plates. His face was covered by a half-mask of dark leather. In his right hand gleamed a short blade coated in a dull sheen. Poison. Or worse.
Voss reacted first. No shout. No warning. His short sword was already drawn before the other man had finished his leap. The clash of blades cracked through the round chamber, hard, sharp, metallic. The infiltrator pivoted at once to break the angle and tried to dart toward the rear exit. Jonah cut him off.
"Not one step further." His blade struck the floor. The rule dropped into the space like an invisible tension. Not a cage. A constraint. The infiltrator hit it—not stopped outright, but slowed sharply enough to lose his escape angle. Mira understood instantly. She moved only three steps, found the gap between the pillar and the man's trajectory, and cut. Not his throat. His forearm. The poisoned blade fell with the light sound of metal striking stone. The infiltrator did not cry out. Professional. Or fanatic.
He fell back, pivoted again, and with his left hand hurled a small black sphere straight at the core of the third node. Mira shouted:"No!" Elias was already moving. Always him. He lunged toward the center without hesitation, caught Lena in passing to pull her out of the direct blast line, and struck the sphere in midair with the butt of his spear. The object veered off, hit a pillar, then burst on the floor in a spray of black smoke and ritual glass fragments. The node shuddered.
All eight locking lines lit up at once. For one awful instant, Zayn thought the entire chamber was about to blow. But no. The impact had hit a secondary circuit. Enough to shake the structure. Not enough to destroy it. Elias stepped back once, spear between himself and the core. And Zayn saw the value above him flicker briefly. 103 Another one. Of course. He had just prevented a detonation at the heart of the node. Prevented them all from being caught in a sealing rupture.
His power was answering exactly as it should. The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement. Again. At the same moment, the infiltrator realized his escape was closing. Voss to his right. Jonah in front. Mira at the angle. Elias back at the center. Lena behind them, but already ready to cast her threads if someone went down. And Zayn... Zayn remained on the left, slightly outside the most obvious line. The place he was always given when no one wanted to rely on him...
but which an enemy might underestimate for precisely that reason. The masked man saw it. Of course he did. He chose his angle immediately. The weaker one. The wounded one. The least integrated one. The right exit. He came straight at him. Zayn felt the old panic rising, the filthy, primitive kind, the one that has nothing heroic in it and wants only one thing: not to be the one who dies last out of dignity. But this time, something else came with the fear. He could see the value.
28 He was no longer looking only at an armed silhouette. He was looking at an existence denser than his own. A reserve. A living gap. And that sight made the collision even more obscene. The infiltrator struck low, aiming for the leg that was already bad. Zayn parried too late with his left hand, diverted the strike just enough not to lose the tendon, and crashed backward against the pillar he had used for cover earlier. Pain shot through his hip. The man came again at once.
And Zayn understood that he had neither Mira's speed, nor Jonah's line, nor Elias's density. If he fought clean, he would die. So he fought dirty. When the second attack came, he did not try to block it. He let the blade slide across his arm instead of his throat, accepted the cut, then hurled his own dagger at the infiltrator's face—not to kill, but to force a blink. The steel scraped the mask. A fraction of a second. Enough.
Zayn snatched up the poisoned blade that had fallen earlier and drove it with all his strength into the man's side, between two flexible reinforcement plates. The infiltrator's breath cut off. He twisted to yank the weapon free... and Jonah slammed into his shoulder from the side like a human battering ram, hurling him violently against the pillar. Voss followed. His blow was not beautiful. Not heroic. A Marches soldier's strike. Short. Hard. Meant to finish.
The blade went in beneath the collarbone and came out behind the back. The man froze. Then collapsed to his knees. Silence dropped all at once through the rotunda. Not true silence. The kind that comes after steel, when everyone checks whether they are still whole. The infiltrator coughed once. Black-red blood slid beneath the edge of his mask. Voss seized him by the nape and hauled him half upright.
"You're going to talk." The man lifted his eyes. Not toward the captain. Toward Zayn. Even dying, he was looking at him. A very bad sensation crawled up Zayn's spine. As if something in this man's real mission had passed precisely through that look. The infiltrator gave the faintest smile beneath the split leather. Then he bit down on something. Voss understood too late. The captain tried to grab his jaw, but gray foam was already spilling between the teeth behind the mask. A break-poison. A death capsule.
Standard. The body convulsed. Then stopped. Jonah swore.
"Of course." Mira was already crouching beside the corpse.
"Don't touch the mask." Voss released the body with contained anger.
"Too late to save him."
"Not to read him." She pulled out her thin knife and carefully cut the strap of the half-mask without touching the mouth. The face beneath appeared. A man in his thirties. Ordinary features. No obvious sign of allegiance. But on the side of his neck, just behind the ear, a half-burned mark showed under the skin. Not a noble tattoo. Not a religious symbol. A control mark. Mira stared at it for a second.
"That..." She looked at Voss.
"This isn't an independent agent." The captain crouched. His face hardened even further.
"No." Lena, still at a distance from the body, gripped her staff in both hands. Her breathing had not fully returned to normal.
"What is it?" This time, Voss answered.
"A mark of forced service. Old method used by the hardest eastern houses to lock down certain sensitive operatives." He looked up.
"Officially banned two cycles ago." The Circle of Ash took even clearer shape before them now. Not merely harsh nobles quick to judge. Frontier houses so obsessed with the demonic threat that they had long used methods even the center considered too filthy. Jonah crossed his arms, jaw tight.
"So what do we have? A man tied to the Ash Circle, with sanctuary maintenance access and a prepared route through the galleries?"
"Yes," said Mira.
"Which means?" Mira lifted her eyes from the corpse.
"That someone provided access. And someone else provided the operative." College and Ash. Or sanctuary and east. Or a narrower faction caught between the two. The collusion was tightening. Elias moved toward the central core, checked the still-active lines, then came back to them.
"We can't stay here much longer." He was right. The smoke from the black sphere had not fully dispersed. The node was still pulsing irregularly. Something in the chamber had been weakened by the attack. But before Voss could give the order to move, Mira said:"Wait." She pointed at the dead man's left glove. Inside the wrist, a small strip of waxed parchment had been sewn into the lining. Voss retrieved it. Carefully. The message was very short, written in dense administrative shorthand.
Not enough for an ordinary reader to understand at a glance, but Maelor—or any senior archivist of the College—would have recognized the structure immediately. Mira read aloud what she could already infer:"Secondary passage validation... lower level... route deviation... priority observation..." She stopped. Her gaze shifted very slowly toward Zayn. Then toward the next line. The word was partly smeared away. But still half legible.... subject V... Jonah sensed the change before she even spoke.
"What?" Mira looked up.
"This wasn't only mission sabotage." Silence fell over them a second time. Colder.
"It was targeted," she finished. Lena went pale. Even Elias, very slightly. Jonah turned toward Zayn at once. Not with hatred. Not yet. With that brutal lucidity he had carried from the beginning:"They wanted him separated." Yes. The thought entered the room before anyone said it plainly. Not the heroes in general. Not just any summoned one. Him. Him specifically. Zayn felt a colder sweat than battle-sweat crawl beneath his clothes. Because that meant several things at once.
Someone already knew he was the point to isolate. Someone was already acting on his trajectory. And above all... someone among the humans was perhaps trying to provoke in him exactly what the sanctuary still feared without fully understanding. Voss folded the parchment.
"We go back up. Now. With the body, the wax, and this." Jonah pointed at the central core.
"And the third node?" Mira looked at the fractured lines.
"We have what we came for. The longer we stay, the greater the risk of a secondary rupture." Elias nodded.
"Then we move." Lena stepped toward Zayn.
"You're bleeding." He looked down. Yes. The cut on his arm had reopened. Not deeply, but enough for blood to start running down to his wrist again. Lena raised her staff.
"Don't move." The thread of Sanctuary Thread flew toward him. Not as strong as before. Not as stable. She was exhausted. But the cool, slight tension still settled over his flesh and slowed the bleeding. Not a true complete healing. A functional patch, like everything about her: less spectacular than the others, but terribly useful when someone still cared about staying upright. Zayn felt the difference. And for one second, he hated what it stirred inside him. Not simple gratitude. Something worse.
The idea that even now, even after being specifically targeted, even after coming back from below, he still needed her to spend her own endurance on him. Another Elias, only less bright. Another person paying while he survived. He looked away before she could read too much in his face. Then, by pure reflex, he saw her value flicker briefly. 75 And he hated that too. Because now he could see it. Because Envy no longer allowed him to experience human gestures without numbers laid over them. Lena healed. Elias saved.
So he kept rising. And him? He watched. Measured. Took. The group began moving again. This time with a corpse, evidence, and something worse than a simple incident: an intention centered on Zayn. He walked in the middle of them, again. But now everything had changed weight. Jonah was watching him more closely. Mira was already thinking too far ahead. Lena still refused to let the thread drop, even invisibly. Elias was still holding the group together.
And Zayn, within that fragile core they still formed despite everything... was beginning to understand a truth he would rather never have seen. The world had not merely read him wrong. It had started turning around him like something that already mattered. Not like a hero. Like a fracture point.
