The meeting room held four of them. Nibbles had called for Marvella. Of those who had not been in the study the previous night, she was the most trusted — she had been part of the early research, she had been in the cave, and she had seen the cage with her own eyes. In an emergency, the Order's rules allowed its leader to keep confidences to a small number. Four was the minimum. It was also, Nibbles had decided, enough.
He would still need to write a full report and send it to the king, but that was a later problem. This was the immediate one. Nibbles had closed the door himself, which was unusual. He had also moved the chairs into a tight circle on one end of the table. Arranging things so that secrets and important things can be told without raised voices or missed messages. The map was on the table. The disc was not. Fenwick had the disc. He had not put it down since Nibbles' study. Aldous had his book.
He had not opened it since he sat down. Marvella had her notebook. She was not writing in it. Fenwick laid out what they knew. He had done this in pieces — some of it to Nibbles and Aldous the previous night, some of it to nobody, the parts he had been carrying alone since the Thornwood road. This was the first time all of it sat in one room. Fenwick went over the first hints he had noticed on the guild board. He had checked the counts this morning before the meeting.
Twelve postings over nine days, clustered east, the dates tightening as they moved west. He pulled out the map and named each settlement. Marvella wrote them down without being asked, her pen moving steadily across the page. The caves next. Marvella had been there, but she had documented her own section — he laid out the full picture now, Cutty Sark to Barrow Farm in sequence. The cleared pathways. The fire pits with their arranged stones, the ash grey and dry.
The cage at Cutty Sark: iron, bolted into the floor, sized for a large adult, four manacles at the rear wall, the blood inside days old rather than weeks. The marks at Barrow Farm were at a height that didn't match the cknolls. The cknolls themselves were retreating from the deeper tunnel, turning back to face Max rather than whatever was behind them. Aldous set his book flat on the table when Fenwick reached the cage. He did not pick it up again.
The charm next — he unwrapped it without touching the disc and set it between them. The symbol. Its source. What Aldous had found in the Black Stone records. He did not say the name. Aldous's jaw tightened at the relevant moment, and that served as confirmation. The dragonflies last. The wrecked carriage. The footman and driver taken, the swans left. The largest dragonfly carrying a disc pressed behind the head, the same symbol, dried blood on dried flesh.
He set the map on the table when he finished and did not touch it again. The rings spoke for themselves. The room was quiet. Marvella looked at the map. Her pen had stopped moving somewhere around the charm. She had not written anything since. She was still looking at the rings, at the shape they made, at the three marks on the western edge that sat closer to the kingdom's heart than the others.
"The timing," said Marvella. Fenwick kept his eyes on the table. Nibbles did not look up.
"The first postings went up the day after the evolution. That's the shape of—" She stopped. Stolen story; please report. Aldous pulled one of Fenwick's settlement notes toward him and studied it, then looked at the map. The room held what she hadn't finished, and nobody picked it up, and after a moment it settled into the table with the map and the red-ringed settlements and the three marks on the western edge, and it stayed there.
"The pattern has a center," said Nibbles. His voice was the voice he used for administrative decisions, the one that moved past things rather than through them.
"Before we act on anything, we need to know what's at it. What the shape actually means. Whether the board represents the whole of it or the edge."
"The guild will want—" Aldous started.
"The guild will be told what we know and will file it correctly," said Nibbles.
"Fenwick will write the report." He paused.
"The investigation is ours." No one argued.
"Fenwick and Max go out to follow the pattern," said Nibbles.
"The rest of us hold here, watch the board, and document anything that moves." He looked at Marvella.
"You're on the board. Every posting, every date, every settlement. I want the shape tracked daily." Marvella wrote something. One line. She did not read it back.
"Aldous." Nibbles did not look at his book.
"The hunger bar research. Whatever you found in the Black Stone records, there may be more. Other orders. Other documented cases." He paused.
"Keep looking. And find out if any further collections were sold or dispersed when other orders dissolved. Let me know what you find. We will arrange a purchase and get them here." Aldous nodded. He had not opened the book since he sat down.
"Fenwick." Nibbles picked up the map. He folded it once, slowly, and set it down again.
"The center of the pattern. That's where you start. You follow the route the supply runs used — the waystation first, then east." He paused.
"If something is being taken from settlements, the waystation will tell us whether it was happening close to home as well." Fenwick thought of the mark on the western edge. He thought of the farm, three days out, and of the letter he had sent that said tell the boys to bathe. He did not say anything.
"Questions," said Nibbles. Not asking if there were any. Inviting them. The room was quiet for a moment.
"The disc," said Marvella.
"The symbol under the doorframe in the original Cutty Sark cave — before we confirmed the charm source. Same symbol?"
"I believe so," said Fenwick.
"So it was marked," she said.
"Before the dragonflies. Before anything, we documented."
"Yes." Marvella wrote something else. One more line. She opened her mouth. She looked at the map. She closed it. Nibbles moved on.
"We tell no one outside this room until the report is filed and the guild has the formal account. After that, it's their jurisdiction to manage the information as they see fit." A pause.
"Before that, it is ours." Three nods. Aldous rewrapped the disc in the blank page without being asked and put it inside his book. Nobody had touched it directly the entire meeting. Fenwick folded his notes. The map was in his pocket. Max was back in the barn, turning the tile, waiting for the meeting to end and today's mission to start. Patient and ready for the next thing to be done.
"In the morning," said Nibbles.
"Can you go now?" asked Nibbles.
"We are waiting for a jerky delivery this morning, but after that, we can leave," said Fenwick. They left in the order they had arrived, single file, through the door Nibbles had closed himself. Aldous was first with his book. Marvella had her notebook open, but the pen was down. Fenwick last, pausing at the door. Nibbles was already looking at the table where the map had been. Fenwick left him to it. The barn was quiet when he pushed the door open.
Max was where he had left him — cross-legged against the far wall, facing the door, the tile turning slowly in his hands. He had been here the entire meeting. He had not wandered. The sword was across his knees. He looked up when Fenwick came in.
"Well?" said Max. One word. But it was the right word, aimed at the right person, carrying a full question inside it. Fenwick had spent two months cataloging Max's vocabulary and still found moments like this one worth noting.
"We go after the jerky arrives," said Fenwick.
"Then east. Following the pattern on the map." Max nodded once. He looked at the tile for a moment, then set it on the floor beside him. Done with it. Ready for the next thing. The jerky arrived twenty minutes later — the Guild's weekly delivery, wrapped in oilcloth, enough for three days if they were careful. Fenwick packed it without ceremony while Max strapped on the sword and settled the cloak around his shoulders. The ring was on his finger. The hood went up. Fenwick climbed into the harness.
"Ready?" he said. Max looked at the door. At the road beyond it. At whatever the day was going to ask of them.
"Ready," said Max. They left.
