The best way to shore up shallow relationships was to give shallow gifts because, in reality, the everyman's moral capacity struggled to surpass the volume of a 4kg Miele tumbler. Besides… Eppie knew better than anyone that in Chinese culture, "money" was a matter of comfort, while "face" was a matter of life and death. Zara Arriaga came back from Fresno still hearing Paco's voice correcting the same four bars he'd made her repeat for two days straight, the same golpe he swore she was rushing no matter how many times she counted it out loud. She was ready, or as ready as she'd ever be, to close the final chapter of her life at LAPA.

This would be the last showcase two-thirds of them would ever perform, if the rumoured statistics were true. Zara hadn't taken a slot at LAPAGANZA itself. It felt wrong, somehow, sitting a signed artist down in a seat some Sophomore had been dreaming about since September. She didn't need LAPA's stage. Thanks to Eppie, there'd be other stages for her for the rest of her life.

Even now, she sometimes woke up dreaming of her friend's baby blue eyes, waking to the timeless chords of In the Pines, wondering if Eppie was the girl in the woods, waiting to be found. Just how could she pay Eppie back? Could she even? At the thought that she would never do for Eppie what Eppie had given freely and without debt, her heart grew sore.

Zara bowed to the folding table—Dr Ford and two of her instructors, pens capped, waiting—then took her seat in the spotlight, adjusting the guitar against her body like a familiar limb, and began. The thumb came first, walking the bass strings slowly, testing how quiet she could make the room go. Then the rasgueado, four fingers unfurling in fan strokes, each one landing exactly where Paco had drilled it. She simultaneously performed a staccato golpe against the soundboard—her technique clean, correct, untouchable.

The picado runs came next, index and middle blurring across the high strings, faster than the room's held breath, her shoulders dropping into the galloping flow, her golpes landing harder, the compás quickening under her like a pulse she wasn't fully in control of anymore. Then came the climax, and though her fingers remained confident, her heart did not. The feeling—the true feeling of soleares— was absent. It was a part of him, his past, his youth. It was the regret that scarred him for life, which he allowed to bleed into his music—it was why Paco was without children. She had a contract with one of the world's largest music producers, and she had two charting songs before she had even graduated. Watching her friend across the room light up with unadulterated joy, Zara thanked the Redeemer for blessing her with genuine, uncomplicated joy. As though in a trance, she walked down from the stage, past her Proctors and into Eppie, and allowed the room to misread whatever the hell it wanted.

Dr Ford waited with patience for them to part, then, smiling from ear to ear with a hand extended, shook her hand.

"Extraordinary technique, Miss Arriaga. Genuinely extraordinary." He then looked at Eppie, shook his head as he'd done at the arrangement of In the Pines, and told them both with absolute sincerity that, "You both have an incredible future ahead of you. LAPA wishes you all the best, girls…" Then Ford smirked sheepishly and asked if they could both sign his staff yearbook. Eppie's signature was grand and elaborate.

Zara's, in comparison, was meek and subtle, but perfectly blended into Eppie's sprawling loops and curls. Tuesday morning. After a long night of celebrations with Zara's family at El Cid, sans Sangria, Eppie was informed by Maddy, via text, that Dream a Little struck its ceiling in the iTunes top 20 and was now falling rapidly in the rankings.

The song, a ballad of girlhood, clearly wasn't destined for the top 10—that pole position belonged to another of Universal's pop sensations—after Doves Cry did its multi-week number. Nonetheless, their music video had achieved something no chart position could measure. Dream a Little's organic popularity wasn't something marketing could cook up with money.

Be it nostalgia, the unusual aesthetic, the song itself, or the uncommonly pretty girls triggering unwary viewers' neurons, people were forwarding it to their friends, their aunts and their old school buddies. It was nostalgia for the late 80s and early 90s, made for folk who still vividly remembered the Halcyon days. The view counter's growth remained exponential, as were the comments.

The result had been so unexpectedly blessed that Merric Webber had been summoned by Sony Pictures for a long table discussion of his future career. As for Eppie, she was sweated out in her theatre black, vainly browsing her own video at the back of the Whitman's.

Eppie was thankful she had arranged her schedule so that she had no showcase of her own.
