I stood over the sleeping Stephanie, regarding her with an impassive stare. Her drool, generously mixed with cheap martini, had soaked straight through the pillow that had once been mine. A perfectly pragmatic plan occurred to me: walk to the bathroom, fill a bucket with ice-cold water, add a couple of handfuls of ice from the freezer, and dump the refreshing cocktail over her blue hair. "Fine. I'll leave a note: You passed out at my place, I went for a run with Tom, there's food in the fridge, wait for me to get back, and don't go looking for trouble."

"Add another line: don't go looking for Leon until we get back."

"Good point." Maggie pressed the paper flat against the tabletop and started writing with the ballpoint pen. "It's still creepy out here." She hugged herself against the chill.

"Let's get in the car and go."
