"I can't... I can't write anymore..." MURASAKI was completely broken. She huddled back inside her heavy juni_hitoe robes, covering her ears tightly.
"Someone like me... my writing can't save anyone. The more I write, the more the world rots... I'm just a miserable, cynical introvert with a rotten personality..." The shadows closed in around her. Just as their jet-black, vaporous hands were about to touch her beautiful dark hair—"Cut the crap!!" I slapped the ghost's spectral arm away with my bare hand. A violent, freezing chill surged up my arm, but I didn't care. I grabbed MURASAKI tightly by her shoulders and forced her to look up.
"Stop degrading yourself, Murasaki Shikibu!"
"っ...!"
"What's wrong with having a bad personality?! What's wrong with being an introvert?! Look at these things right in front of us! This is the raw truth of humanity!" I pointed my finger directly at the encroaching shadows.
"A world filled only with beautiful lies is a farce! Everyone gets jealous, everyone holds grudges, and everyone has nights where they just want to curse someone to hell! You know that better than anyone!"
"But... it's terrifying... Something so hideous..."
"That's exactly why you have to write it!" I screamed. I didn't care if my vocal cords tore to shreds. My soul, which had once been saved by a thousand books, overflowed into raw, unfiltered speech.
"Look at Osamu Dazai! He bared his own hideousness to the world to write No Longer Human! Look at Osamu Tezuka! He captured the absolute karma of humanity to draw Phoenix! They didn't run away! They looked straight into the darkness of their own souls and transformed it into the light known as a 'story'!" I scooped her fallen folding fan—her console—off the floor and forced it back into her trembling grip.
"Lady MURASAKI. If you stop writing, these things will remain nothing but 'monsters.' They'll be nothing but trash wandering the capital, cursing people for eternity!"
"But if you write...!" I wrapped both of my hands around her ice-cold fingers.
"If you give them words, they can become 'characters'! They can become part of a meaningful 'story'! Save them! Save these pitiful, hideous, helpless reflections of yourself!" A moment of absolute silence. MURASAKI's pupils quivered. Inside those eyes that resembled the deepest ocean trenches, a tiny flame ignited. It was the volatile wildfire of a creator. If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
"... You really have a silver tongue, don't you?" She wiped away her tears and sniffled loudly.
"For a mere editor to lecture an author... you're a thousand years too early." She stood up. Inside her grip, her folding fan began to radiate a fierce, blinding violet glare.
"gennai! Are you ready?"
"Hell yeah, big sis! Your brainwaves are off the charts! Complete limiter release on the linguistic cortex! Write until the servers melt down!" MURASAKI snapped her fan open, glaring at the encroaching horde of Onryo. Her expression was no longer that of a terrified girl. It was the face of a "Creator"—one who scripts and dominates reality.
"... How dare you defile my room, you third-rate mob characters." She slashed her fan through the air.
"I'll sink every single one of you into my manuscript paper—my Death Note!!" [Commencing Scripting] As MURASAKI's fan carved through the empty space, characters of pure gold were engraved in the air. Letter by letter, they linked together at a terrifying velocity, becoming a glowing chain that filled the local directory.
"In a certain reign—whose it was matters not—amongst the many consort-grandees and lady-chamberlains who attended the Emperor..." It was the opening lines of The Tale of Genji. Yet, this was no mere text. It was a [Conceptual Weapon] possessing literal mass. GBAAAAARGH! The Onryo screamed as they made contact with the glowing text. Their amorphous bodies were sucked into the golden characters, locked into place.
The raw emotion of "jealousy" was being converted into "narrative prose," completely neutralized and purified.
"Not yet! I'm just getting started!" MURASAKI wielded her fan as if executing a sacred, chaotic dance. Her hair disheveled, her juni_hitoe robes billowing. Her silhouette was breathtakingly beautiful, yet charged with an eerie, demonic intensity.
"Deeper! Darker! Never underestimate the raw obsession of a woman!" [Aoi no Ue] [Rokujo no Miyasudokoro] [Yugao] Every time she shouted a character's name, the Onryo were designated their roles, hardcoded as missing pieces of the plot. The black fog that had saturated the room was rapidly transforming into a beautiful, roaring torrent of literature.
"Michinaga! Are you watching?! This is the true power of the 'gloomy stories' you despised so much!" MURASAKI roared at the empty air.
"A superficial light can never erase the dark! Accepting the shadow, loving it, and tracing it to its absolute limits—that is the only way to appease the soul!" Her brush—her fan—refused to stop. The glory of Hikaru Genji, and his ultimate downfall. The death of his beloved Murasaki no Ue. And finally, the hopeless world of the Uji Chapters that marched on even after the protagonist's absence.
"Incredible..." I was entirely spellbound. So this was genius. Single-handedly, she was absorbing the concentrated grudges and suffering of tens of thousands of souls across the capital, sublimating it all into a single narrative. A fierce, scorching heat radiated from her back. She was burning her own life. Outright whittling away her soul to write.
"... This is the final scene!" MURASAKI screamed. The final, colossal Onryo remaining in the room—a massive conglomeration of the unfulfilled regrets of men who failed to become Emperor—lunged at her. MURASAKI did not back down. Staring the monstrosity dead in the eye, she slammed down the final sentence. [Kumogakure / Vanished into the Clouds] BOOOOOOM...! A blinding flash of pure gold exploded. This was no offensive spell.
It was a silent, tranquil resolution—an ending that fully embraced "death" and "impermanence." The Onryo froze in its tracks. The black fog unraveled within the light. The raw, violent emotions of "regret" and "hatred" were rewritten into a sublime acceptance and aesthetic— mono no aware —and vanished into nothingness. As the light faded, absolutely nothing remained. The Onryo, the mountain of garbage, and the stale, moldy air had all been vaporized.
All that was left was a deathly quiet, purified atmosphere, and countless pages of a completed manuscript scattered across the floor.
