James did not sleep. The Gravemantle Colossus's territory was too dangerous for that, and even if it had not been, his mind refused to settle. They had made it into the western territory, but that did not mean they had made it through. Somewhere ahead, the Level Fifteen Regional Boss was moving through a landscape that seemed to belong to it. Mountains shifted when it walked. Gravity changed without warning. Boulders that should have remained buried in the ground floated through the air before crashing down again.
Every few minutes James could feel a faint vibration through the soles of his boots, as though something enormous were moving somewhere beyond the ridges. So he did what he always did when a problem became too complicated to solve by staring at it. He worked. The remains of their temporary camp sat inside the shelter of a fractured stone outcropping. It was not much of a shelter, but the rock broke the worst of the wind and, more importantly, gave Kevin several solid surfaces from which to anchor his silk.
James had spent the first part of the night making sure nothing nearby could reach them without making enough noise for Julie or Kevin to notice. After that, he dragged the damaged equipment into the center of the shelter and laid everything out in front of him. The Warpstone Warhammer came first. James turned it slowly in his hands. The weapon had survived fights it had never been designed to survive. The shaft had been repaired more than once.
The head carried fractures where the spatial rune had been damaged, and sections of the outer reinforcement had been battered almost flat. It still worked, which was the important part, but James had stopped trusting the word works after enough experience with things that worked right up until the moment they killed him. He activated Workman's Appraisal. The familiar lines appeared across the weapon, but his improved Intelligence made the information clearer than before.
He could see the stress running through the shaft, the damaged sections of the Runebark housing, and the places where the remaining enchantment was struggling to maintain its structure. James frowned.
"You're telling me what is wrong," he muttered, "but not how to fix it." The Appraisal did not answer.
"Figures." Kevin clicked softly from beside him. James glanced over. The Foundation Weaver had spent most of the last hour collecting loose pieces of material from the battlefield and dragging them back toward the shelter. Several strands of Silver Thread silk stretched between stones around them, creating a crude work area. Kevin had also brought back several pieces of monster material James had not immediately recognized. James picked one up. It was a strip of Hydra hide.
He ran his thumb across its surface and activated Appraisal. [Hydra Hide] [Uncommon monster material.] [Flexible, durable, and highly resistant to corrosive substances.] [Compatible with armor, reinforcement, binding, and certain alchemical applications.] James looked toward the pile of damaged equipment. Then he looked at the hide.
"Oh." Kevin raised two legs.
"No, I know what you're thinking." The spider remained still.
"You're thinking exactly what I'm thinking." Kevin tapped one leg against the ground. James sighed.
"Fine. We'll try it." He started with the breastplate. The armor had taken enough acid damage during the Hydra fight that the original material was no longer trustworthy. Some sections had hardened into brittle patches, while others had become thin enough that James could bend them with his hands. Replacing the entire thing would take too much time and too many materials, so instead he examined the damaged areas one by one. He removed the worst section and laid it flat.
Then he placed several Hydra neck scales beside it. Those were even more interesting. The scales flexed when James pressed them slowly, but when he struck one with the handle of his knife, the material hardened almost instantly. Appraisal had already confirmed their properties. Flexible while relaxed. Hardens under sudden impact. Suitable for defensive crafting. That was exactly what he needed.
James arranged the scales over the vulnerable sections of the breastplate, leaving enough overlap for them to move independently. He did not want a solid plate. A solid plate transferred force. He wanted the opposite. He wanted the impact spread. The first attempt failed. The scales shifted when he bent the armor, and one tore loose when he struck the plate with his fist. James stared at it.
"Too rigid." He removed the bindings and started again. This time he used Silver Thread. Kevin immediately moved closer.
"Yeah, I know. Your silk." The spider extended a strand. James took it carefully between two fingers. It was thin enough to disappear against the Hydra hide but strong enough that he had already seen it hold creatures many times heavier than himself. Instead of binding the scales directly to the breastplate, he threaded the silk through small openings between them, creating a flexible network that allowed each scale to move independently.
Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings. He pressed down on the armor. The scales shifted. He struck it. The impact spread. James struck harder. The scales locked together for a fraction of a second before separating again. He smiled.
"That," he said, "is better." Kevin clicked approvingly. James continued working. By the time he finished the breastplate, the original armor was barely recognizable. Hydra neck scales covered the chest, shoulders, and upper back in overlapping layers, while Hydra hide reinforced the vulnerable joints beneath them. Silver Thread connected everything without making the structure rigid. It was not elegant. James would never have called it pretty. But it was strong. He activated Workman's Appraisal.
The result made him stop. [Reinforced Monster-Material Breastplate] [Material compatibility improved.] [Impact resistance increased.] [Corrosion resistance increased.] [Flexible reinforcement detected.] James turned the armor over in his hands.
"Not bad." He put it aside and reached for the hammer. The real problem was there. The weapon had to survive whatever he was going to do with the Channel Rune. James already understood more about the rune than he had a day earlier. It did not simply move mana from one place to another. It could carry an effect. It could connect structures that should not have been able to interact and allow force to travel between them.
He had seen the principle work with gravity, but he had not yet understood how far he could push it. James examined the damaged spatial rune.
"Let's see what you can actually do." He removed the broken Runebark plate carefully, exposing the damaged section beneath it. Several lines of the spatial rune had fractured during the previous fight. He could not recreate the rune itself. He did not know enough yet. But he could reinforce the structure around it. He cut a thin strip of Hydra hide and fitted it beneath the damaged housing. Then he placed several narrow pieces of Runebark over the top, leaving the original rune exposed between them.
Kevin supplied the silk. James threaded it through the Runebark pieces in a pattern that followed the existing structure instead of crossing it. He stopped. The pattern looked familiar. Not because he had seen it before, but because it made sense. James slowly drew the Structural Foundation Rune across the reinforced section. Pale-blue light appeared. The Runebark stopped shifting. James then placed the Channel Rune Fragment against the side of the housing. Nothing happened. He adjusted its angle. Still nothing.
He shifted it again, this time aligning the Channel Fragment with one of the existing damaged spatial lines. The fragment pulsed. James froze. Kevin froze with him. The pulse traveled through the Runebark. James could feel the weapon's structure change beneath his hands. The Channel Rune was not trying to repair the spatial rune. It was creating a pathway around the damage, allowing the existing enchantment to interact with the reinforcement without forcing the broken sections to carry the entire load.
James's eyes widened.
"You don't need to fix it." The hammer pulsed again.
"You just need to give the force somewhere else to go." He immediately began carving. The next several hours passed without conversation. James worked slowly, testing every change before committing to it. He cut grooves into the Runebark housing, inserted Hydra hide where flexibility was required, reinforced stress points with Silver Thread, and adjusted the Channel Fragment again and again until the energy moved through the structure without tearing it apart. When something failed, he changed it.
When something worked, he tested it harder. When a section broke, he rebuilt it. Eventually, James sat back and looked at the weapon. The hammer was still damaged. He had not magically restored it. The spatial rune remained fractured, and several pieces of the original reinforcement were beyond saving. But now the weapon had layers. The Structural Foundation Rune held the physical structure together. The Hydra hide absorbed movement and redistributed strain.
The Silver Thread connected the pieces without preventing them from flexing. And the Channel Rune gave energy and force another path. James slowly tightened his grip around the handle.
"Let's find out." He stood. Kevin immediately backed away. James laughed.
"Smart." He raised the hammer and brought it down against a thick section of dead stone. The impact sounded like a thunderclap. The stone cracked. The hammer remained intact. James looked at the weapon. Then at the stone. Then back at the weapon. A notification appeared. [Structural interaction recorded.] [Layered reinforcement recognized.] [Channel compatibility increased.] James's expression changed. He had expected the System to recognize crafting. He had not expected it to recognize how he had crafted.
Another line appeared. [Crafting Synergy detected.] [Structural Foundation Rune + Anchor Rune + Channel Rune] [Compatible runic framework identified.] James stared at the words for several seconds. The three runes were beginning to make sense. The Foundation held something together. The Anchor fixed something to a location. The Channel allowed something to pass between two points. Individually, each rune was useful. Together, they could become a system. James looked toward the distant mountains.
The Colossus was somewhere beyond them. He could feel another faint tremor through the ground. The mountain moved. James lowered the hammer. He had spent the last few days thinking about monsters as things that had to be killed. That was still true. But his class had been teaching him something else from the beginning. Build the right structure, and force could be controlled. Build the wrong structure, and force would destroy everything connected to it. He looked down at the hammer again.
The weapon was not finished. Neither was he. James gathered the remaining Hydra materials and placed them beside his equipment. There were still scales left. More hide. Tendon. The two surviving tongues. Pieces of the crown with strange natural grooves that might become useful later. He was not going to waste them. Not when the System had already shown him that experimentation was changing his class. Kevin climbed onto the newly reinforced hammerhead and inspected the work. James looked at him.
"Well?" The spider tapped one leg against the Runebark. James nodded.
"Yeah. I think so too." Julie slid closer from where she had been resting against the stone. Her body was still tired from the battles, but her eyes remained fixed on the hammer. James could feel her curiosity through the bond.
"You want to test it?" A pulse of agreement answered him. James smiled.
"Tomorrow." He looked toward the darkness beyond the shelter. The western territory waited in silence, its mountains black against the night sky. Somewhere out there, the Gravemantle Colossus was moving through its domain, drawing strength from the stone beneath its feet. James rested the hammer across his knees. Tomorrow, he would see what his new work could do. For tonight, he finally allowed himself to sit still.
