Chapter 14: The Heart Beneath the River - Part I The chamber falls into stunned silence for half a breath after the vessel's chest tears open. Then the corruption erupts outward. Blackened growths burst through the split ribcage in violent spiraling strands while dark fluid floods across the chamber floor around the collapsing body.
The vessel convulses against the shield wall, its distorted limbs thrashing blindly through the floodwater as the thing rooted inside it forces itself upward through ruptured flesh and shattered bone. Several soldiers recoil instinctively. The creature barely resembles anything human anymore. The corruption has consumed too much of the vessel's body over the years beneath the buried river.
Thick black tendrils pulse through the opened chest cavity like living roots tearing wider each time the thing inside pushes harder against the failing prison and beneath the corruption, something moves still, a shape, smaller than the vessel but denser, waiting inside the ruined body like a parasite buried beneath skin. The vessel screams again. The sound tears through the chamber with enough desperation remaining inside it that the river clergy visibly flinch.
"…hold…" it chokes through blackened water flooding from its throat.
"… please…" The word lands harder than any attack. For the first time since descending beneath the city, the thing before us feels less like a monster and more like the final remnant of someone condemned to endure something impossible for far too long. The chamber trembles violently beneath another surge from the buried river. Water crashes upward through the grate while the redirected current tears through the weakening spiral beneath the basin.
The corruption anchoring the vessel continues unraveling under the pressure, and every strand stripped away exposes more of the thing inside the body. The prison is collapsing completely now. Garrick sees it immediately.
"End it," he says sharply. The soldiers move as one. Spears drive deep into the exposed torso from both sides while Garrick forces forward through the center and buries his sword across the cracked binding marks spread through the vessel's chest. The reaction tears through the chamber. The corruption lashes outward violently from the opened cavity while the vessel convulses hard enough to throw blackened water across the walls and ceiling alike.
The body tries to force itself upright again, but the redirected river keeps stripping current away from it faster than the corruption can stabilize the flesh. The corruption surges upward through the opened chest in a desperate attempt to escape the dying body. Dark tendrils erupt outward toward the flooded chamber while the shape buried beneath the growths begins forcing itself higher through the ruined ribs surrounding it. The sight freezes the room.
The thing emerging from inside the vessel resembles a heart or what a heart becomes after years buried beneath corruption and river pressure alike. Blackened flesh pulses wetly beneath layers of root-like growths while thick strands spread outward from it through the remains of the vessel's body. Each pulse sends dark fluid flooding through the chamber water while the corruption twists violently around the exposed organ like something alive and terrified of death. The eldest river cleric stares in horror.
"Gods…" I understand then what the vessel truly was, a seal grown from living flesh. The corruption anchored itself inside the vessel's heart and spent years feeding through the buried river until the body itself became part of the containment. Now that the seal is breaking apart from within, the corrupted heart pulses again. Every drowned corpse still moving in the chamber jerks violently at the same moment and then collapse immediately afterward. The corruption abandons them completely.
All of it is retreating toward the heart. Toward the last surviving center of the spiral beneath the river. The thing understands it is dying and dying things become dangerous. The chamber water begins moving differently again. Earlier the redirected current fought the corruption openly through competing flows beneath the basin. Now the floodwater circles inward toward the exposed heart in tightening spirals while the river roars violently beneath the collapsing chamber floor.
The corruption is trying to rebuild itself one final time. The river clergy react instantly. Love this story? Find the genuine version on the author's preferred platform and support their work!
"Break the flow completely," the eldest cleric shouts. The chants deepen sharply around the runoff channels while the redirected river slams harder against the remaining spiral feeding the exposed heart. Water erupts across the chamber in violent crosscurrents afterward, tearing chunks of corruption away from the writhing mass exposed inside the vessel's chest. The thing screams, through the river itself. The sound reverberates through the flooded chamber walls and straight into bone.
Several soldiers stagger visibly beneath it. Then the heart tears itself free from the collapsing vessel in a spray of blackened water and torn flesh. What remains of the body folds inward afterward, finally losing the strength to continue moving once the corruption abandons it completely. The swollen limbs collapse into the floodwater while the carved binding marks across the ruined torso dim one by one beneath the rising current. For a brief moment, the chamber grows strangely still.
The heart pulses near the center of the basin, suspended within spiraling strands of corruption that continue feeding toward it from the floodwater around the room. Thick root-like growths trail from its surface through the water, searching blindly across the chamber floor before recoiling whenever the redirected river tears sections away. It no longer resembles part of a body. It resembles something grown. Something that spent too many years feeding beneath the river.
The river clergy maintain the redirected current with visible strain now. Blood darkens the corner of one cleric's mouth while another trembles hard enough that the floodwater around her ripples unevenly with every movement. Yet the current continues shifting beneath the chamber despite the effort threatening to break them. The river answers slowly. More of the floodwater begins pulling away from the corruption instead of feeding into it.
The spiral surrounding the heart weakens each time the redirected flow tears through the chamber floor beneath it. The thing notices. The exposed heart contracts sharply, and every remaining strand of corruption lashes outward through the water in response. The flood around the basin surges violently toward the formation while blackened tendrils coil through the current searching for anything still living.
"Shields forward," Garrick orders. The soldiers tighten formation again, though exhaustion drags through every movement now. Several men can barely keep their footing beneath the floodwater and strain combined, yet the line closes around the river clergy without hesitation. One tendril strikes the shield wall almost immediately. The impact feels different from the vessel's earlier attacks, less force, more hunger.
The corruption spreads across the shield's surface in branching black veins before the river strips it away again and carries it screaming back toward the basin. The soldier holding the shield goes pale beneath the lanternlight.
"It tried to get inside," he says quietly. I believe him. The corruption no longer attempts to overpower the formation directly. The vessel carried structure, instinct and purpose. What remains now feels stripped down to something simpler and far more dangerous, survival. The heart pulses again and the chamber responds with it. Dark water surges toward the basin from every flooded channel while the river roars beneath the stone floor hard enough that cracks spread across the chamber walls.
Small fragments of masonry begin falling into the water around us.
"We're running out of time," one engineer says hoarsely. He is right. The chamber cannot survive much longer under this pressure. I step closer toward the basin while the soldiers continue holding the corruption away from the clergy. The river has weakened the spiral considerably now, but the heart still anchors enough of the flow to keep rebuilding itself each time the corruption begins collapsing. The thing has survived too long to release its hold on the river willingly.
The eldest cleric sees where my attention settles.
"You found something."
"The river is already trying to cleanse it," I say while watching the current pull against the corruption surrounding the heart.
"The problem is that the spiral still gives it somewhere to return." The cleric studies the basin immediately afterward. Understanding reaches her expression slowly.
"If the flow breaks completely…"
"The river will drag the corruption downstream instead of feeding it back inward." The chamber trembles again beneath another violent pulse from below. This time the floodwater rises nearly to the soldiers' waists near the basin edge before draining back through the runoff channels. The river is reclaiming its course beneath the city faster now that the seal has broken apart. The heart senses the change.
The corruption lashes outward more violently afterward, striking the formation in frantic waves while the spiral surrounding the basin tightens desperately inward around the exposed mass. It is afraid. Instinctive panic from something realizing the environment sustaining it has turned hostile. The river clergy force the redirected current harder through the chamber. The effect becomes immediate. The spiral around the heart distorts sharply as competing flows rip through it from beneath.
For the first time since the vessel collapsed, the corruption loses cohesion completely for several seconds. The river tears through it. Blackened strands rip away from the heart and dissolve into the current before they can reform again. The exposed mass convulses violently while the floodwater around it clears enough that I finally see the thing properly beneath the corruption coating it.
A human heart altered beyond recognition by years spent containing something that should never have lived beneath a river at all. And somehow, that makes it worse.
