It could give him a compass. But the road, he had to walk one step at a time, himself. Chris settled back against his seat and let out a long breath. He didn't feel let down. If anything, he felt an odd steadiness. So I still have to rely on myself. Good. That's how it should be. he told himself. The plane began its descent. Below the cloud layer, that world-famous forest of steel — New York — rose into view. His new starting line had arrived.

And a new system — more powerful, but with clearer limits — would face this new challenge alongside him.
