He had not even noticed when the disciples and elders beside him were cut down. By the time he realized he stood alone, the demonic figure that seemed to have climbed straight out of the underworld fixed its gaze upon him. Lin Yifei could bear no more. His legs gave way, and he dropped to his knees. Cold sweat poured down his aged face. So alike… impossibly alike… Lin Yifei kept his head bowed, not daring to look up. His throat worked several times before a trembling voice emerged.

"You… just who are you?" He was absolutely certain the man he had once feared more than anything had died long ago—dead beyond any doubt. Su Chen's eyes were ice.

"Merely a vengeful ghost collecting a debt for an old friend." The sword flashed. Lin Yifei's head tumbled to the ground, rolling once before coming to rest. A pair of wide, incredulous eyes stared up at Su Chen. Su Chen did not bother asking why Lin Yifei had betrayed him. There was no need. The price of betrayal was death—for him and for every last one of his descendants. Su Xuehe would handle the rest. Right then, a heartrending wail of grief rose from deeper within the inner courtyard.

Su Chen looked up and saw a face he recognized all too well.
