Cale Before Ellara opened her eyes, before she realized I'd done anything at all, and while Rade was distracted with whatever piece of technology he was currently obsessed with, I reached out and touched Ellara's forehead for a second time. Just a light press. Barely more than a brush of my fingers right in the middle, where the third eye was located. To anyone watching, it would have looked like nothing. A brother's absent gesture. A moment of reassurance.

I altered my breathing and applied probably the most advanced and delicate Arcanum I knew, though incredibly subtle in its working. I looked around as I applied it, making sure that nothing outwardly noticeable or dramatic enough to draw attention. That was the point. To avoid pushing or imposing. I started by simply listening to the flow of mana. Her breathing was already close to the rhythm I wanted, quick on the inhale, uneven on the release, the way people breathe when they're excited and trying not to show it.

I adjusted myself, slowed my own breath and flow, and let my presence settle until it gave her something steady to mirror, even if it was not conscious. Mana followed breath. It always did, though even I, who lived and breathed mana cultivation and development, wasn't sure why it did that. I felt her mana trace familiar paths within her body, faint, untrained, and gunky, and still moving the way water moves when it finds a weakness in its structure and can't help its own nature.

I pulled my hand away before she could notice. After a bit, Ellara blinked, her eyes opening as the noise of the quad brought her back to the present.

"Did you—" she started, then stopped, frowning slightly.

"Huh."

"What?" I asked, already turning away. She took a breath, then another. Slower and more even this time.

"I don't know," she said.

"I just feel… different. Like I stopped holding on to something without realizing I was holding it." Chimes interrupted us and rolled out across Arclight in layered harmonics, the kind reserved for formal proceedings and sanctioned challenges. Conversations fractured as groups turned and chattered. I stood.

"I've never heard that chime before. What's happening?"

"A challenge," Ellara said, already stepping aside as the flow carried people forward.

"A real one." I raised an eyebrow.

"What kind of challenge exactly?" Rade fell in step beside me and Ellara, apparently finally finding something more interesting than his Interface.

"The official kind. I just realized you haven't been to one yet, though not super surprising. Most want to keep the practice challenges private, and I doubt anyone would want to fight you directly." I didn't know what to say to that. Students and faculty peeled away from their clusters and conversations and began moving with the same unspoken certainty, like a flock that had decided on a new heading.

The chatter sharpened as it traveled, excitement building layer by layer, the kind that came from the promise of spectacle. Ellara caught my sleeve and tugged me west.

"Come on," she said.

"I'm curious now." We headed west on a large walking path, though we didn't so much choose a direction as allow ourselves to be carried with the flow, the crowd funneling toward a structure I'd passed without ever stopping to ask why it existed. I noticed it now. The Ascendant Circle. The name was carved into a broad stone arch at the entrance, letters worn smooth at the edges by time and repetition.

Beyond it rose a circular structure that dominated the western edge of the campus, tiered stone walls climbing six stories into the air, open to the sky at the center. From a distance it looked ceremonial. Up close, it felt purposeful. Unauthorized use of content: if you find this story on Amazon, report the violation. It wasn't a stadium. It was a sanctioned arena. Students filtered through wide corridors that curved with the building's shape, the sound changing as stone replaced open air.

Every surface bore marks that weren't decorative, fine fractures, shallow gouges, places where the stone had been repaired and reinforced again and again. Violence had happened here. Controlled, regulated violence, and violence all the same. That was the point. The interior opened suddenly. The Circle's heart was a wide, sunken floor of dark stone, smooth and not polished, ringed by a raised dais that defined the fighting ground.

The dais itself was layered, its edges etched with restraint sigils and impact dampeners that sank deep into the foundation. Whatever happened inside that boundary was meant to stay there. Above it all, seating rose in concentric tiers, benches carved directly into the stone, each level slightly offset to preserve sightlines. The sound of the crowd softened as it climbed, excitement diffusing into a low, constant hum.

Ellara and I moved upward with the rest, winding along the outer ramp until we reached the upper ring. Up here, the noise thinned. Individual voices blurred into texture rather than distraction. The view, though, sharpened. From this angle, the Circle's geometry made sense. The wards weren't glowing or ostentatious. They were embedded so deeply they registered as absence rather than presence, pressure fields layered beneath the stone to absorb excess force without affecting Expression work.

This place did its best to prevent damage. I could feel the Arcanum and Sanatio deep within the structures. Impressive, actually. Kaereth Valmor was already standing on the central dais. The rapier rested in his hand as if it belonged there, slender, unadorned, balanced forward just enough to favor control over flourish. It caught the light once as he shifted his grip, then seemed to decide reflection was unnecessary. This wasn't a weapon meant to impress at a distance.

It was built for precision, for point control, for conversations held at arm's length where a single mistake ended things. The Circle responded to him without fanfare or pretense. The air simply adjusted. Wind did not arrive as spectacle. It aligned. Pressure settled into the space around him in subtle gradients, the kind that only registered if you'd learned to feel for imbalance. Footing changed by degrees. Sound carried differently. Kaereth wasn't forcing the element into motion.

He was allowing it to take its place and then standing where it wanted to be. That alone told me a great deal. He raised his free hand, palm open, and the noise of the crowd ebbed, not because he demanded silence, because people leaned in without realizing they were doing it.

"Arclight," he said, his voice carrying cleanly across the Circle.

"Thank you for joining me." A ripple of reaction passed through the stands. Kaereth smiled slightly, the expression open, unguarded in a way that felt intentional rather than careless.

"You're probably wondering why I sent out the call, why you're here in the Ascendant Circle when there are no scheduled duels or informal training." He paused for effect.

"The Annual Five Seat Martial Tournament will be fought this year," he said.

"That means some of the most powerful young Practitioners across our Plane will be here competing. I, Kaereth Valmor, intend to compete and win. I intend to show the other Dominions, hell, the other Planes, that Kaereth Valmor should not be ignored or underestimated, and I intend to do that as an Arclight student." Excitement surged, cheers breaking out along the lower tiers. Faculty exchanged looks that mixed concern with calculation. This wasn't an announcement meant to surprise them. They'd known.

Hearing it spoken aloud, here, changed the weight of it.

"On this path to conquest, because that's what this is, conquest, I will take any challenger," Kaereth added.

"Student. Visitor. Transfer. Anyone who believes they can stand here and represent this Academy." He lifted the rapier slightly, point angled down, non-threatening and unmistakably present.

"I will not let Arclight lose because of hesitation," he said.

"Not to legacy houses. Not to visiting schools. Not to old grudges dressed up as tradition." The wind responded, tightening just enough that the words felt anchored.

"And if there are rivalries that need settling," he finished, "better they surface here, where witnesses exist, rules apply, and outcomes are recorded." Princess Elain of Lysara stood near the inner railing, her posture compact, her attention fixed on Kaereth's feet rather than his blade. She watched weight distribution, micro-adjustments, the way the wind curved around his stance instead of pushing against it. Her hands rested loosely at her sides, calm and ready.

Princess Maeryn of Threniel lingered half a pace behind her, her gaze already drifting across the Circle's perimeter, the ward seams, the exits, the sightlines. She wasn't assessing the fight. She was assessing everything around it. Neither applauded. Neither smiled. They were here to witness. Not to be entertained. I leaned back slightly, letting my attention settle into the same quiet place it always did when I watched someone competent move. Kaereth's style was an interesting one I had seen before.

Wind-based Arcanum threaded through Aura reinforcement, woven into his timing rather than layered crudely on top of it. Every breath fed the next motion. Every step anticipated where the pressure would be a heartbeat later. This wasn't flashy like my own style, which was something of an original composition. It was conversation. One he fully intended to have with anyone brave or foolish enough to step onto that stone. The first challenger was already pushing through the lower ring. The Circle had been opened.

And Kaereth Valmor had just invited the world to speak.
