Kira smiled at the dead, then stepped forward. The apparitions didn't come like a wave this time. They came in formation. Layered. Deliberate. Moving with a coordination hunger could never produce. It was gorgeous, if you were willing to ignore the screaming. Corpse-lights lifted first, pale and pretty above the churned field. Below them, shades flattened themselves against mud and corpses, slipping between boots, beneath shields, through the broken places where frightened men and women had begun bunching together.
Wraiths threaded through the physical dead still clawing at the living line, using bodies as curtains. The commander on the hill was learning. Kira hated that. She also understood it. A corpse-light dropped toward a healer dragging a wounded man by the straps of his breastplate. The healer never looked up. One hand stayed pressed against the wound in the man's neck while she tried to keep the prayer going under her breath.
Kira shaped a Wraithbar under her palm, vaulted over a crawling corpse, lightened through the turn, then went heavy as she landed between the healer and the hook. The corpse-light struck the Sphere and slowed. That fraction was enough. Wraith Bind snapped around the hook inside it, forcing the lure into a shape she could cut. Kira cut through it. The corpse-light broke. The healer flinched backward.
"Move," Kira said. She moved. A wraith came through the wounded man's chest before Kira could turn. Seralyth was already there. The paladin's blade came down with formal brutality and split the wraith from crown to tether. Wraithfire crawled along the cut. Gold flared beneath it, steadier than before, less like a spark and more like a door being tested from the other side. The return through the bond surged. Kira's channels cooled. Her core tightened. A pane flashed.
[Wraithbound Companion has advanced: Legendary 12% → 15%.] Another followed. [Mana Channels has advanced: Rare 23% → 24%.] Kira didn't stop. Stopping was for people who had room. She didn't. A cluster of shades tightened around her. They weren't circling. They were compressing. Each carried a different face of grief: a child's outline, an old woman's hands, a soldier without eyes, a mother-shaped thing with its mouth sewn shut by cold thread. They entered the Sphere together. Too many.
Field Sense hit Kira all at once: pressure, movement, hunger, cold, hooks, angles. She cut the first. Seralyth took the second. Kira lightened and dropped under a reaching hand, shaped a low Wraithbar across the mud, hooked one knee over it, and swung sideways where gravity expected down. Her blade opened the third shade from underneath. Then the fourth went through her shoulder. Not fully, but enough. Cold slammed into bone. Kira's arm went numb. Her grip failed for half a breath, and half a breath was too much.
The fifth shade hit her ribs. The sixth dragged at her spine. The seventh came for her throat. The Sphere caught pieces of them but not enough. Their edges snarled together inside her domain, too many cold structures trying to get inside her at once. Kira went heavy. The mud accepted her weight with a wet crack. She shaped Wraith Bind around the hand at her throat, another around the pressure in her ribs, another around the thing trying to crawl under her shoulder blade. It was all she could do to hold them back.
Too many anchors. Too much strain. She couldn't track all three Binds cleanly at once. She felt feverish but couldn't spare the attention to figure out why. The lattices shook. Seralyth cut one shade away from her, then another, then vanished beneath a surge of pale bodies as three wraiths and a grief-veil folded over her at once.
"Seralyth!" The bond flared with pressure and fury. But Kira felt the paladin's outline distorting under too much contact, too many hostile spirits tearing at her manifestation faster than the bond could stabilize it. No. Kira forced the word through clenched teeth, not at the field, but at herself. She released the Binds holding the shades around her. They lunged. Kira shaped a Wraithbar above her head, grabbed it with her good hand, lightened hard, and launched herself upward.
Insubstantial, numbing claws ripped down her body as she went, but she was moving. The bar barely held. She shaped another above it, kicked off the first, and let Kinetic Acrobatics salvage the bad angle. A disc flashed under her trailing foot just long enough to redirect her sideways before a wraith reached her ankle. She went light, swung from the next bar one-handed, released at the top of the arc, and threw another construct into the empty air above her before gravity pulled her back down.
Another disc appeared above and behind her. Kira twisted in open air, planted one foot against it almost upside down, and kicked herself higher. A corpse-light missed her ankle by inches. She caught the next bar with both hands, swung through the reach of a wraith, released early, and let Kinetic Acrobatics turn the bad timing into another rotation instead of a fall. Her shoulder screamed. Her ribs burned cold. Bjorn stayed on her shoulder as if falling simply didn't apply to him.
Below, Seralyth's gold flickered, then guttered beneath a swarm of wraiths and new dark shapes pouring into the field. Kira's hand tightened.
"I'm bringing you back," she said through the bond.
"Hold this against me later." She dismissed Seralyth. The paladin vanished under a crush of dead. For one brutal instant, the bond went empty. She hated it. The apparitions below surged upward toward her. Good. That was the point. The dead climbed the air after her in a pale spiral. Dozens became hundreds as the apparition tide folded inward, corpse-lights, shades, and wraiths abandoning easier prey to stream toward her. She had gone up, and the hunt followed. The screams below changed.
Kira risked one glance down and found a widening patch of battlefield beneath her. Soldiers who had been drowning in apparitions suddenly had room to breathe. Half the things trying to kill them were looking up.
"Bjorn," she said.
"Yes."
"This is extremely stupid."
"No." Kira almost laughed.
"No?"
"It is risky."
"That's worse."
"It is more accurate." She reached the top of the last bar she dared make. Her channels burned. The Sphere strained around her, forcing every unstable spirit crossing its edge into something more solid. Beneath her, the apparitions had stacked into a vertical column so dense she could barely see the mud through them. Corpse-lights burned between stretched bodies. Wraiths climbed through shades. Hooks and hands reached through one another toward her. Kira looked down. The commander wanted efficiency. Fine.
She could appreciate efficiency. She drove one needle-thin Bind straight down through the center of the column, from the bar beneath her hand to the mud far below. For one breath it was only a vertical line running through hundreds of climbing dead. Then she branched it, and Wraithfire speared sideways through the packed column in every direction. One branch became six, six became twenty, then too many to count, each punching through another cluster of apparitions and locking them into the growing structure.
Against flesh it would have done next to nothing. It didn't hold the swarm. It made the swarm hold itself. Every apparition trying to reach her became an anchor for the next. Hooks caught hooks. Reaching hands tangled with one another. The entire column locked into shape beneath her. Pale bodies writhed around a trunk of Wraithfire, impaled along branching lines from the mud almost to her feet.
Wraiths twisted around one another along the spreading limbs while corpse-lights hung between them, pale flames burning at uneven heights. It was enormous and obscene. A ripple went through the living line below. Fighters looked up despite the dead still clawing at their shields. One man lowered his spear without seeming to realize it. Another made a warding sign against his chest. A priest stared upward at the towering white structure, his prayer forgotten halfway through. Kira looked down at it. Christmas tree.
Screaming ornaments. Lovely. Her bracers went warm again, but not with heat.
"Oh, man. What now?" The bracers weren't studying her cleanest movements. They were recording the corrections she made when injury, fear, or bad footing took the clean option away.
"Oh, great," Kira muttered.
"Audience participation." The lattice began to tear. Of course it did. Seralyth was gone. She reached for an opening Seralyth should have occupied and found empty air. No Seralyth meant no return through the bond, no clean rush cooling her channels after every kill. The loop had snapped, and Kira felt the cost immediately. Her core was emptying faster. Her channels weren't cooling with it. The dead were still climbing. The swarm stretched toward her with mouths, hands, hooks, stolen faces worn wrong.
If she dropped wrong, they would take her apart before she hit mud. So she didn't drop wrong. She chose how to fall. Kira released the highest bar, lightened, and dropped toward the shaft. Hands reached. She caught the next bar below and kicked off it. Her falling momentum swung her around the outside of the tree in a wide arc instead of carrying her through the trapped column.
The Wraithfire Blade lengthened and widened, stretching far past anything she would have dared use on the ground, as much edge as she could hold without losing control. She released the bar at the bottom of the swing and the Blade carved across the outer branches, cutting through every tether it crossed. A disc flashed under one foot.
Kira struck it sideways and redirected ninety degrees, body nearly horizontal as she ran one impossible step along empty air before the momentum carried her around the next quarter of the tree. Wraith Step erased the gap between arcs. She reappeared higher on the opposite side with a wraith already reaching for her, caught another bar, inverted around it, and let the extended Blade sweep behind her like the edge of a scythe. Apparitions came apart in her wake. Her left foot missed the disc.
Kinetic Acrobatics turned the failure into motion before panic could catch up. Kira tucked, let the missed disc become another half rotation, planted one palm on a Wraithbar she hadn't meant to use, vaulted over it instead of grabbing on, and accelerated out of the recovery. She went light for the swing as she circled clear of the trapped column, then drove her density up at the instant the Blade met resistance. The cut tore through three tethers at once.
Before their hands could close around her, she was light again and falling somewhere else. Ensure your favorite authors get the support they deserve. Read this novel on the original website. A wraith's fingers passed through the space where her face had been. Kira's stomach dropped. Then the next disc flashed beneath her falling foot. She hit it, went heavy through the turn, and the extended Blade swept through an entire side of the tree. A dozen pale forms split along the same arc.
Field Sense opened the whole structure to her at once: which branches carried too much strain, which apparitions were pulling hardest, which sections needed one more cut to fail. A laugh escaped her somewhere between one Step and the next. Okay. That's concerning. Her core drained in gulps. Too fast. Mana Channels burned hot, raw at the edges without Seralyth's return-flow to soothe them. Every Step took its price. Every Bind anchor took more. The cuts returned cold power, but not enough to keep pace.
The whole knot still lived around her, spending faster than the return could replace it. Kira's teeth clenched.
"Come on." She kept orbiting. Each pass stripped more apparitions from the outer branches, severed more tethers, and left the remaining structure carrying weight it hadn't been built to hold. She lost count. Discs flashed and vanished beneath her boots. Wraithbars formed and dissolved under hand and knee. The Wraithfire Blade carved a descending spiral around the tree, cutting through hooks, hands, and open mouths as Kira worked her way toward the ground.
The dead stretched after her, always half a motion late, their hunger binding them tighter into the structure she had built. She didn't need to kill them one at a time. She only needed them to keep pulling hard enough to tear the structure apart. By the time Kira dropped toward the ground, half the tree had already been cut through. Kira shaped one last Bind through the failing center of the lattice. She hit the mud on one knee, heavy enough to crack the ground beneath the muck, and drove both hands down.
The Sphere claimed the space around the collapsing knot. Inside it, the lattice held better. The apparitions held shape longer than they wanted to. Hooks, hands, and tethers stayed connected for one terrible instant instead of scattering free. Kira closed both fists. The surviving apparitions pulled against one another. The damaged lattice gave them nowhere else to go. The tree collapsed inward through the spiral of damage she had carved into it, every cut becoming a fault line at once.
Wraithfire ran through the joined structure, through hooks and reaching fingers and stolen voices. The knot tore itself apart in a chain of ruptures. Apparitions broke by the dozens until hundreds of pale shapes were simply gone. For one breath, the space beneath Kira was empty. Living soldiers stared through the gap, then at Kira kneeling in the middle of it, as if someone had torn a hole in the battle around her. Kira had no attention left for their reaction. She was too busy trying not to vomit Wraithfire.
Nothing came back at first. Kira felt the emptiness, the sudden absence of reserve, her channels burning too hot inside her body. Then the return hit. Winter lightning through the chest. She choked on it. The Heart drank. Her core clenched, condensed, and dragged the rush down into structure. Her channels cooled so fast it hurt, the burn collapsing into a hard ache that felt dangerously close to relief. Panes slammed open and vanished at the edges of her vision. [Wraith Bind has advanced: Rare 28% → 31%.] [Field Sense has advanced: Rare 35% → 37%.] [Kinetic Acrobatics has advanced: Uncommon Rank 8 → Rank 10.] [Wraith Bind Refinement Unlocked: Structural Lattice] Wraith Bind may now form multi-point stabilization patterns with reduced strain when all anchor points remain inside the Sphere. Kira lifted her head. Then the physical undead hit the space she had cleared. Something massive crashed through them from the side, very much alive and considerably worse for the undead.
A man with storm-braided hair and an axe large enough to qualify as siege equipment came through laughing like the gods owed him money.
"I leave for one breath," Hrovald Stormwake bellowed, "and ze little ghost-fire menace starts making a spectacle without me?" Lightning snapped into his axe from clear air and crawled along the blade. The weapon drank it, roared, and came down in a shining arc that turned a dozen physical dead into bone steam and burning mud. Kira stared.
"Hrovald?" He grinned at her over one massive shoulder.
"Do not sound so pleased. I am here for ze glory."
"You picked a stupid place for it."
"Ze best kind!" A wraith lunged at his back. Kira ripped the bond open again, and Seralyth came through mid-swing. Seralyth split the wraith before it touched him. Hrovald looked at the pale paladin, then at Kira.
"You have acquired a dead knight."
"She wasn't acquired." Seralyth's gaze didn't leave the field.
"Accurate."
"Ah," Hrovald said.
"A dead knight with opinions."
"Many," Seralyth said. Then she stepped past him and cut into the next surge. Hrovald made the fight larger. He drew the physical dead by being enormous, bright, and apparently offended by the idea of restraint. Lightning chained from his axe into packs of rot-walkers. Skeletons shattered in the wake of swings that shook the air. Every swing bought Kira space she hadn't had. Kira used it. They fell back into motion without the careful pairing they'd used before. Seralyth moved and Kira already knew where not to be.
A Wraithbar opened a line the paladin used without looking. A lattice caught a wraith and Seralyth's blade was already falling. When Seralyth drove a shade back, Kira cut the tether before it could scatter. Kira lost track of time. The field became a blur of attacks missed by inches and glancing hits that could easily have been worse. She stopped counting individual kills. The System didn't. Corpse-lights broke. Shades came apart. Wraiths were pulled screaming out of soldiers and cut in two.
Grief-veils folded around platoons and were pried open by lattice, blade, and storm. Her channels burned, cooled, burned again. The cycle settled. Kira spent Wraithfire while the Blade drank and Seralyth killed. The return cooled her channels as fast as the fight heated them, and her body kept learning when to go light and when to anchor hard.
The bracers stayed warm only at certain moments: when Kira made a mistake and survived it, repeated the same recovery, favored the injured side, or turned wider than she needed to because fear had gotten there first. The reflection was learning her. Good. Terrible. I can use that. A pane opened while she was halfway through a Step. [Wraithbound Companion has advanced: Legendary 15% → 20%.] Another came after Seralyth carved open a grief-veil wrapped around three living soldiers and one corpse tangled among them.
[Mana Channels has advanced: Rare 24% → 27%.] A third followed when Kira used Structural Lattice to pin four wraiths inside the Sphere long enough for Hrovald's lightning to scatter their outer forms and Seralyth to cut the cores. [Wraith Bind has advanced: Rare 31% → 34%.] Then another pane forced itself into view. [Level Up] Level 7 → Level 8 Experience overflow applied. Unallocated Attribute Points: +10 Fifty. Not enough yet. The commander on the hill changed the pattern.
There was no dramatic gesture or visible command. The formation changed all at once. A grief-veil rose from a heap of corpses behind Seralyth. It hadn't come with the tide. It had been waiting behind them, folded under bodies until Seralyth passed. Kira saw it a breath too late.
"Seralyth!" The veil opened into a mouth lined with the faces of the unavenged dead. Seralyth turned. It struck her. For one heartbeat, the paladin vanished inside the veil. Kira ran toward her. Hrovald's axe landed between Kira and three rot-walkers trying to intercept her.
"Go," he roared. Kira went. The veil wrapped around Seralyth like a burial cloth, layers of faces pressing inward, mouths opening against her armor, hands clawing at her helm, her shoulders, her sword arm. Gold flared beneath the Wraithfire. Something older than the bond struck through Kira hard enough to make the connection shudder. The channel was wounded, but the divine power behind it was furious. Seralyth stopped being pushed back. Her sword lowered.
For one beat, Kira heard Seralyth's voice more clearly than the battle around them.
"Mirelia," Seralyth said, "witness." The veil tightened. Seralyth stepped into it instead of away, and gold erupted around her, ragged and incomplete. A broken channel forced itself open. Death hadn't taken Seralyth's duty or her rage with it. The grief-veil screamed as Seralyth drove her sword through its center. Kira reached her just as the thing tore apart. The return through the bond surged hard enough to swamp everything else Kira could feel.
A pane opened with silver-white edges and rose-gold fire burning through the letters. [Divine Quest Updated: Rekindle the Vengeant Bond] Mirelia has witnessed vengeance carried by the faithful dead. Condition fulfilled: Dame Seralyth Vey has acted in true vengeance without command, compulsion, or borrowed will. Quest Complete. Reward applied. Seralyth's outline sharpened. Her armor became less pale. The gold in her blade didn't vanish. Kira's breath caught. The Wraithbound bond swelled hard enough to hurt.
[Wraithbound Companion has advanced: Legendary 20% → 42%.] [Dame Seralyth Vey: Paladin Channel Restored - Partial] Class Profile Recovery Initiated Combat Identity Reasserting Seralyth staggered one step. Kira caught her arm. Solid. For the first time since the Court, Seralyth looked at her with more than memory behind her eyes.
"Kira," Seralyth said. Kira's throat went tight.
"Welcome back." Seralyth looked past her. The tide kept coming. Gold burned along the paladin's sword.
"Not yet," Seralyth said. Of course not. The moment shattered under another scream from the line. Kira turned. A wedge of wraiths had pushed toward the seam between her territory and Tavian's storm. Hrovald was buried in physical dead to the right, laughing less now, working harder. Tavian still held the center, gold light rising and falling like a pulse. Kira and Seralyth moved together without discussion. Kira shaped the lattice before the wraiths crossed into the Sphere.
Seralyth cut the first opening, Kira Stepped through the second, and Hrovald's lightning crashed over the third, leaving the air full of smoking fragments. Kira caught what remained with Bind, pulled them inward, and Seralyth's sword finished the work. A living shield-bearer fell backward with a wraith halfway through his chest. Kira went heavy, planted, and hooked the trailing thread.
"Out." The Sphere tightened around the wraith's trailing thread as Kira spoke. The wraith came free screaming. Seralyth ended it. The soldier hit the mud alive. Panes struck one after another. [Field Sense has advanced: Rare 37% → 39%.] [Wraithfire Blade has advanced: Rare 15% → 18%.] [Sovereign Body has advanced: Rare 23% → 25%.] Then: [Level Up] Level 8 → Level 9 Experience overflow applied. Unallocated Attribute Points: +10 Sixty. This is too fast. Still short. Kira swore.
Bjorn, steady on her shoulder, said, "One more."
"One more level or one more horror?"
"The level."
"Not the time."
"It is precisely the time." A banshee-shape rose from the corpse pile behind Hrovald. It opened its mouth at his back. There wasn't time to think. She lightened, formed a Wraithbar beneath one foot, and launched herself sideways. The bracers flashed warm as she corrected midair, and she knew, with awful clarity, that the reflection would remember that correction and use it against her later. Good. Later means alive. She hit the banshee inside the opening scream. The scream drove a spike of pain behind her eyes.
Sovereign Body made her heavy before the sound could throw her aside. Wraith Bind slammed into a three-point lattice across the banshee's mouth, all anchors inside the Sphere, all shaking.
"Seralyth!" The paladin's blade came up. Kira's came down. Wraithfire and grave-gold light crossed through the banshee's throat. The lattice crushed the scream back into the banshee. For a heartbeat, every dead thing nearby turned toward them. Then the banshee broke. The return hit harder than the Heart could process at once, but it caught the surge and began condensing it into structure. Kira's knees hit mud. The Sphere didn't drop.
Seralyth stood over her and cut apart the first shade that tried to take advantage. Panes slammed open. [Heart of the Wraithfire Court has advanced: Unique Rank 1 - 32% → 41%.] [Sphere of Wraithfire has advanced: Unique Class Mechanic 26% → 31%.] [Wraithbound Companion has advanced: Legendary 42% → 46%.] Then: [Level Up] Level 9 → Level 10 Experience overflow applied. Unallocated Attribute Points: +10 Seventy. The battlefield didn't stop, but a pocket opened around her, just a few seconds of space.
Hrovald crashed backward through three corpses and planted himself between Kira and the next rush.
"On your feet, ghost-fire girl!"
"I scheduled poorly." He laughed and swung his axe in a low, brutal arc. Lightning followed, clearing a ragged crescent in front of them. Seralyth stood at Kira's side, gold still burning beneath the white Wraithfire, blue running through the blade. Tavian's storm detonated across the center, driving the nearest apparition wave back in a brilliant sheet. She had a few seconds. Enough to spend. Bjorn's voice came close to her ear.
"Spend." Kira blinked through blood, sweat, and cold still leaking from her ribs.
"What?"
"Now."
"I'm in the middle of something."
"Yes," Bjorn said.
"Spend anyway." The attribute pane opened before she consciously decided to call it. Seventy unspent points waited. Strength eighteen. Agility twenty-three. Endurance eighteen. Vitality seventeen. Intelligence twenty-eight. Will twenty-three. Perception twenty. Presence twenty-eight. Kira saw the math. Sixty-five to bring everything to thirty. Five left. Presence. Her laugh came out raw.
"Of course Presence gets dessert." Bjorn's tone warmed.
"It has been patient."
"That is one interpretation." The dead surged against Hrovald's lightning. Seralyth cut a shade in half without looking away from the field. Kira spent. Strength rose, and her grip stopped feeling like effort and became a fact. Agility followed. The world gave her more room between moments. Endurance opened her lungs, softening the burn in her muscles into usable heat. Vitality loosened the cold in her ribs. Intelligence organized the battlefield at once: threats, openings, movement, timing.
Will pressed the instinct to flinch back under control. Perception pulled hidden movement and spirit-lines into sharp focus. Presence rose to thirty. She fed it the final five points. Presence thirty-five. Something behind her eyes gave way. White Wraithfire slipped free in pale ribbons, blue current threading through it as the flame streamed back along her temples. Then the battlefield hit her all at once. Mud had a smell. Blood had six.
Hot iron, opened guts, old rot, sweat, smoke, wet leather, ozone from Hrovald's lightning. She could separate them without trying. Every scrape of steel came clean through the screaming. She heard someone choking three shield-lines back, the hitch in a priest's prayer, Bjorn's claws scratching lightly against her cloak. She saw individual grains of mud thrown from a boot, cracks running through a skeleton's teeth, the ragged edges of corpse-lights where their shapes failed to quite meet the world.
Nothing blended together anymore. Distance felt wrong. People felt closer than they were. Not physically. Their fear, attention, hesitation, the instant before someone chose to move, registered against her skin like changes in temperature. And they felt her too. The nearest corpse-lights pulled away. A shade stopped reaching for her and turned its face aside. The soldiers nearest her shifted without an order. Boots scraped through mud. A gap opened around Kira one step at a time. She hadn't moved.
Everyone else had.
