He kept the brief to two minutes. Shorter than usual.
"First live drill in the new frames," he said.
"One thing I want everyone tracking — your own timing. Not the formation, not the objective. Your own timing. Every input you make, every decision, notice whether the frame responded the way you expected."
"We benchmarked yesterday," Cirus said.
"Benchmarks are clean conditions. This is a live opposing element." He looked around the bay.
"Your instincts are calibrated for grade-D. Grade-D is gone. Today we find out what that costs us." Krell'va's ear tilted — the attending angle. He'd understood before Cassian finished the sentence. That happened more often now.
"Squad 16-Rho," Cassian continued.
"Seventeenth in the composite. Standard formation, conservative squad leader, they favor sustained pressure over fast plays." He pulled up the objective schematic.
"Three-point capture. We need two of three. Don't get fancy. Get calibrated."
"Getting calibrated sounds suspiciously like losing on purpose," Nyx'ara said.
"Getting calibrated means we identify the recalibration problem today instead of in three sessions when it's cost us something real." She considered this.
"Fine. Boring, but fine."
"You'll find something to do," he said, and mounted up. * The first thing he noticed was the data. ECHO-LANCE's sensor array was painting the bay in real time — clean, current, no lag. For six weeks he'd been making decisions off a picture that was 0. 4 seconds stale by the time it reached him. He'd known this intellectually.
He hadn't known it in his hands until now, the grid updating at the speed it was actually changing, and he spent the first fifteen seconds of the drill half a beat early on every call because his timing had been built around data that always arrived late. He adjusted. Filed it. Kept moving. The second thing he noticed was Krell'va.
IRONJAW pushed through the center approach with the spatial pressure geometry that had become Krell'va's signature — the controlled, angled advance that forced opposing frames to recalculate rather than simply holding position. He'd built it painstakingly over six weeks, every adjustment calibrated to what grade-D hydraulics could deliver. Grade-C hydraulics delivered more. Faster.
In the cockpit, the Forge-Bond delivered the push's actual force as an immediate, accurate read through the control surfaces — and the read was telling him clearly that the frame had responded as if the input was larger than he'd given it. The push that was supposed to angle twenty degrees came in at thirty. The advance that was supposed to arrive at the forty-second mark arrived at thirty-seven. Three seconds early was a formation problem.
The left flank coverage hadn't moved yet because it wasn't supposed to need to move yet. IRONJAW punched three seconds into an approach corridor that the rest of the formation hadn't sealed. 16-Rho's right screen saw it immediately and pushed through.
"Krell'va—""I see it." IRONJAW reversed, which was the wrong call — reversing gave 16-Rho the corridor outright — but before Cassian could countermand it, Ren-Thalen had already moved TIDECALLER into the gap. Not because he'd called it. Because she'd read the moment the way she read everything, the formation's stress pattern shifting as Krell'va committed early, and she'd been moving before it became a problem.
"Hold the corridor," Cassian called.
"Krell'va, left ten degrees, slow it down—""Understood." Krell'va's voice was flat. The tone of a man conducting a live assessment of his own failure mode. The corridor held. 16-Rho regrouped. Cassian pushed the first capture point with Nyx'ara and Cirus while Krell'va and Ren-Thalen locked down the center, and they took it — messily, two seconds slower than projected, but they took it. Then Nyx'ara hit the second point approach and went forty meters past it. Not a deviation. Not an improvisation.
She'd calculated the brake point for a 0. 3-second actuator lag on the lateral thrusters and executed it perfectly — for a frame that no longer had that lag. SHADOWRUN's actual brake point was forty meters earlier. The frame stopped where the physics said it stopped, which was well past the beacon and into the coverage zone of 16-Rho's left anchor.
In the cockpit, the Photon-Will Interface spiked briefly as the stabilizers engaged against the overshoot — the sharp warmth of an unplanned load, different from the familiar burst warmth.
"Contact left—" she started.
"I know." He was already calling coverage.
"Korrath, swing left — Cirus, angle back—" They scrambled. Got her out. Lost the second point. 16-Rho took two. Squad 7-Delta took one. Technical loss. You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version. * The walk back was quiet. Not the comfortable kind. He let it stay quiet until they were in Bay 1-Echo with the door closed and the frames powered down. Then he pulled up the session overlay on the bay's central display.
"Two problems," he said.
"Both caused by better equipment." He pulled up Krell'va's approach sequence. The thirty-degree push where twenty was intended. The three-second early arrival. The gap that shouldn't have existed.
"The hydraulic response on IRONJAW doubled. Krell'va's spatial pressure geometry was built around what grade-D could deliver. Grade-C delivers more. Every input he's trained to make for six weeks is now producing a larger output than he intends." Krell'va looked at the overlay. His expression was the one he used when performing a thorough and unsparing assessment of a problem he was responsible for.
"The adjustment is mechanical," Cassian said.
"You need to relearn the inputs, not the approach. The geometry is correct. The force behind it needs to be cut by roughly a third until the new baseline is instinct."
"How long."
"Three sessions, maybe four." He pulled up SHADOWRUN's track next. The overshoot. The brake point that was forty meters past where Nyx'ara had intended to be.
"Same problem, different axis. Nyx'ara's brake calculations were built around a 0. 3-second actuator lag. That lag is gone. Every brake point she's memorized is now wrong by the same margin — she's stopping later than she expects to." Nyx'ara was looking at the overlay with the expression she made when she was angry at something that was entirely her own doing.
"I went forty meters past the beacon," she said.
"Yes."
"At full advance speed."
"Yes."
"Into their anchor coverage."
"Also yes." He kept his voice level.
"This is not a you problem. This is a recalibration problem that was always going to happen. I should have run three more benchmark sessions before putting you in a live drill." She looked at him.
"Don't do that."
"Do what."
"Take the blame for my brake point."
"I'm not taking blame. I'm identifying a sequencing error in the preparation plan."
"That's the same thing and you know it." She looked back at the overlay.
"I went forty meters past the beacon. That's mine. Give me four sessions." He gave her four sessions. He also pulled up his own track — the fifteen seconds at the start where his calls had come in half a beat early because he'd been timing off stale data that was no longer stale. He put it on the display without comment. Ren-Thalen looked at it.
"You adjusted at sixteen seconds."
"Fifteen. I started adjusting at fifteen, it took a second to propagate."
"Noted." She said it with the precision she brought to anything going into her operational model. Which meant it was going into her operational model. Which meant she'd be reading his timing adjustments before he made them in the next session. He wasn't sure whether that was useful or unsettling. Probably both.
"Cirus," he said.
"Your contingency branches — how many were calibrated around the old sensor lag?" Cirus had clearly already run this number.
"Sixty-three percent."
"Rebuild them."
"Already started." He held up his slate.
"I began during the drill. I'll have the revised branches ready for review tonight." Of course he had.
"Korrath," Cassian said. Korrath looked at him with the specific patient attention of someone waiting to hear whether they had a problem.
"You're fine. Anchor work doesn't have the same lag sensitivity. Keep doing what you're doing." Something in Korrath's expression settled. Not relief — the quiet satisfaction of a man whose assessment of his own performance had just been independently confirmed.
"Four sessions each for Krell'va and Nyx'ara. Everyone else, one to two. We run the recalibration drills starting tomorrow. Clean conditions, no opposing element, just your own timing until the new baseline is instinct." He closed the overlay.
"We lost today. We'll lose differently tomorrow. By session four we'll stop losing because of this."
"And then?" Nyx'ara said.
"Then we find out what grade-C equipment plus our formation actually produces." He picked up his kit.
"Based on today, I think it's going to be annoying for whoever we run against." * She was still in the bay when he came back for his tablet. He'd left it on the display console during the debrief. It happened when he was thinking fast. He'd gone back to B-7, realized halfway down the corridor, turned around. Nyx'ara was standing in front of the central display with the SHADOWRUN overlay still running. Her own approach track. The overshoot.
She'd rewound it and was watching it again, the frame skating forty meters past the beacon in real time, smooth and precise and completely wrong. She didn't notice him in the doorway. He watched her watch herself for a moment. Her patterns were low — not suppressed, just dim, the frequency she ran when she was processing something privately. She rewound the clip a second time. Watched it again.
Then she did something he hadn't expected: she pulled up the grade-D session logs, the old SHADOWRUN brake data from six weeks of drills, and laid them over the new track. The comparison was visible even from the doorway. Every old brake point landing exactly where she'd intended. The new one — the single grade-C run — skating forty meters past. The same input. A different frame. A completely different outcome. He could see her working it out. Not angry anymore. Interested.
The shift that happened when Nyx'ara stopped being frustrated at a problem and started being curious about it — the specific quality of attention that preceded her doing something genuinely difficult. He picked up the tablet quietly. She heard him anyway.
"My brake geometry has been wrong for six weeks," she said. Not to him — to the overlay.
"Not wrong. Correct for the equipment you had."
"Same thing." She touched the display, tracing the new approach line.
"I never noticed I was compensating. I just thought that was where I stopped."
"You were stopping where you needed to stop. The frame was behind you."
"The frame was always behind me." She was quiet for a moment.
"How many of my approach lines are wrong now?"
"All of them. They'll be right again in four sessions."
"Four sessions." She said it like a sentence she was deciding whether to argue with. Then: "I could do it faster."
"Probably. But four sessions is what I can verify." She looked at him over her shoulder.
"You sound like Cirus."
"Cirus is right about evidence thresholds."
"That's a terrifying sentence." She turned back to the display.
"Fine. Four sessions." He left her with the overlay. She was still there when the bay lights cycled to maintenance mode twenty minutes later — he could see the glow of the display under the door from the corridor. He kept walking. She'd find her own way back. She always did. Cirus's revised contingency branches were in his inbox when he sat down. Forty-seven branches, each one rebuilt from scratch around grade-C sensor timing. He read them. They were, characteristically, correct.
He added the recalibration protocol to the standing orders. Thirty-six entries now. He stared at that number for a moment. Thirty-six standing orders for a squad that had arrived with nothing except six names on a door panel. He pulled up the 7D-114 file. Status: under-review. Day forty-eight, still no response, no explanation for the initial status change. He added: day 48, no movement. Patience. He closed the files.
He had four sessions of recalibration drills to plan, a coaching block to prepare for, and eleven open items in the working conditions file, three of which were going to require solutions he hadn't found yet. He got to work.
