Kiss her. This was the request Chael had asked for, and Sobelle froze for a moment as she wondered just what was going through the merchant's head for her to have requested something so taboo. They might as well be witches by this point, as two women kissing was simply something that should never happen.
"I don't..." Sobelle was cut off when Chael's finger pressed against her lips.
"No, you said anything. Remember?" Chael leaned forward and Sobelle could feel the heat wafting off her body. The dress she wore slipped down, exposing the line of her cleavage. Chael's voice was breathless, "anything." It was then that Sobelle noticed the extra details that made up Chael's body; a rosy color tinted her pale flesh, from her cheeks all the way down to her chest.
Sobelle tried to push Chael away and found her hot to the touch, the roaring pulse of Chael's heart stirred the supple flesh underneath her skin.
"Why?" Sobelle looked away, she couldn't bear the shame of meeting Chael's eyes right now. She had responded positively to the girl's push, emotionally, physically, and lustfully. A part of her wanted this.
"We shouldn't try to do something so taboo, we are both women and we cannot build a family together."
"... I know." Chael gently kissed Sobelle's cheeks. She reached out and lifted the hair that covered half her face, the locks parted and Chael saw an expression that fought itself.
"But this is why we're not going to be together, I simply wish to know more about it."
"What?" Sobelle had reacted far too quickly. And the disappointment in her tone was clear for Chael to hear. Her heart ached for a second as all-consuming fear wrapped around her chest.
"I... I think I misread it."
"Did you?" Chael giggled, she lifted more of Sobelle's hair and leaned in. Their lips met and she felt the coldness that tempered Sobelle's flesh be replaced by the heat of arousal. Saliva coated their tongue as they moved their mouths in ways that felt foreign, yet strangely familiar. Sobelle suddenly pushed Chael away, her breathing ragged. She touched her lips with quivering fingers, confusion etched on her face.
She shuddered with every inhale, and her mind warred; one side enjoyed the feeling of helplessness Chael had imposed upon her and the other knew that everything about it was wrong. This shouldn't happen. Ever. And Sobelle acknowledged that. But this was only how far her thoughts went when she considered the morality of what Chael and her did. Of what they were about to do.
"That was... I didn't know it could feel like that." Chael touched her bottom lip like it fascinated her to no end. She eyed Sobelle not with disgust, but with a mixture of curiosity and breathy lust. Then that light died behind her eyes as logic took over and she bowed, "thank you, for helping me practice."
"P-practice?" Sobelle's heart raced so much that it was a miracle she even managed to get these words out. What was Chael talking about? Weren't they trying to do things they shouldn't? Practice? Since when did that make sense?
"What do you mean practice? Was this all a joke to you?!" The hurt in her tone could not be hidden, and it wasn't like Sobelle tried to do it either. She had given her first kiss to this stupid, arrogant girl and Chael treated it as a joke?! What did she mean by practice?! So what? She treated Sobelle as some kind of fool? Was that it?!
"Well, I quite liked it." Chael's words shouldn't cool her anger like this. It shouldn't. But knowing that Chael liked their shared taboo made Sobelle's heart palpitate in ways it never had before. And she hated it.
"I never thought I'd ever think that sharing something so intimate with another woman would feel so good. I've never kissed someone before so I might be biased but..." Tears wet the corner of Sobelle's eyes as she lunged forward and planted lips onto Chael's. Their bodies crashed into a heated concoction of shared fluids, restrained lust, and shackled desires. Immorality bound their lips while their repressed desires chained their bodies in place.
A lock made up of tangled limbs connected their bodies in ways that could only be described as visceral. They gripped each other in a tight vice, not a single one had the intent to let go. Sweat soaked their clothes as their kiss deepened, the passion the two of them shared was a fire that lit their bodies into a wildfire that burned away their walls, morals, beliefs, and sanity.
Every passing second only made Sobelle more desperate to let go, and yet she held on. Her worried thoughts did nothing but made her want to be with Chael even more, everyone controlled her all her life and this little act of rebellion melted the metaphorical chains they had over her and turned it into a sword she'd stab into their very hearts. To Sobelle, at this very moment the whole world was gone, and only the two of them and their intertwined bodies mattered.
When they finally parted, they both looked like they'd been kissing for several hours instead of the minutes they spent in each other's embrace. Chael licked her lips, as if savoring the lingering taste of Sobelle's.
"We shouldn't do this." Sobelle's legs were rubbing together, on top of the growing dampness, there was also a strange sense of discomfort in the space between them. Chael leaned forward and held Sobelle by the jaw, "I know that too. I do. I really, really do." She inhaled, as though the thought alone distressed her.
"But I want to, otherwise I'd just keep thinking about how you'd feel. I want you. Sobelle." The admission got Sobelle to turn away. What was Chael saying? They were both women. This was wrong. She was forced to look back and their eyes met. Like a sailor being lured by the song of a siren, Sobelle observed the storm raging behind Chael's hazel eyes and found herself being mesmerized into submission. Despite this, Sobelle did everything she could to fight back.
She convinced herself that this was not something normal people did, and that it was better off if they followed what everyone said and married men so that they may birth the next generation. That was what needed to happen. That was what was supposed to happen. Sobelle waited for a sign from the Gods to tell her that the train of thought she's had for the past hour was right. That she wasn't mistaken in her beliefs when it came to the relationship between two women.... It never came.
No point in her [Wisdom] going upward. The Gods did not approve.
"Ask me how I feel about all of this." Yet Sobelle still refused to give up. She looked at Chael's confusion, at the hurt in the girl's face, and still pushed her beliefs. She began to plead.
"Ask me Chael. Please!"
"Okay! Okay! Uhm..." Chael looked away, disappointed but also nothing beyond that. Had she expected Sobelle to react this way and accepted the possibility? She took a deep breath and held it, "how do you feel, Sobelle?"
"I like it."
"Then why—""Because I don't understand! Chael!" Sobelle wept.
"I don't! What am I supposed to do about how I'm feeling?! This isn't normal—""It is!" Chael glowered as she lowered the hand that she just used to slap Sobelle.
"It is perfectly natural if you feel like this without being forced! Are you saying there's something wrong with you then?! With us?! Are you saying that everyone has been right all along?!"
"I—" Sobelle hadn't expected that Chael would say that something was wrong with her. Sobelle always believed that the merchant was perfect, that she was everything Sobelle wasn't.
"I don't know."
"Okay then, let me ask you a question. On purpose this time." Chael paused and in that tiny moment of silence, Sobelle's heart raced with something she couldn't quite name.
"What do you think love is?" Love? When asked that question, Sobelle's mind always went back to the memories of her mother. Fray was a simple woman who healed the wounded and every time Sobelle asked why she did it without hesitation, even to those who committed crimes such as thievery, her mother would always say the following words:"Because we care, Sobelle. That is why. Caring, kindness, helping, all of that can be said in one word: Love.
It takes many forms, like my healing here or how I'm devoted to your father and he to me. But Love is also hard to describe or understand, all you need to know is that if you feel it? Then it is the best feeling in the world, and that could never be wrong? Right?! So my wish to heal is never wrong. I know it will hurt others, but I love seeing people being healthy and not sick, I just wish that those who are hurt indirectly by my actions can find the love in their heart and forgive me."
Sobelle understood none of it. And even now as she reminisces about the memory she felt nothing. A lack of understanding does not mean it isn't useful however, as it gave Sobelle the key to answering Chael's question.
"I don't know."
"You don't?"
"Do you?" Chael paused after Sobelle asked her such a simple question. The merchant shook her head, "can you give me a guess then? It doesn't have to be right."
"Well... To me, I think love is when you feel happy. You can feel happy when healing, or happy when training, or happy when doing anything really! And I think that means you love what you are doing." That was what love was to Sobelle. It may mean something else, but this was hers.
"Then I love you." Chael muttered.
"Do you feel happy when you're with me?"
"... Yes." Sobelle went silent. So did Chael. The two of them stared for a second, it passed.
"I love you too." Sobelle couldn't even finish what she was saying because Chael was already on top of her. Their lips crashed. There was no resistance this time.
