DATE: Monday, January 18, 2016 LOCATION: Extended Family Farm, Wisconsin | Transitioning to Wilkes Land Anomaly, Antarctica (VR) LOCAL TIME: 5: 42 PM CST / 6: 42 PM EST The Wisconsin wind rattled the trees outside the Roman concrete-reinforced exterior of the Palladium, but inside, the climate was quiet, comfortable, and smelled faintly of fresh herbs and the clean ozone hum of Leo's Aegis haptic rig.
Leo adjusted his tactile gloves, settling back into his setup as the sleek UI of Fractal Systems booted, laying a crisp digital menu over his virtual workspace. His Fractal Shares balance blinked in the upper right corner—looking healthy enough to finally pull the trigger on that atmospheric glider customization he'd been eyeing. Below his balance, a massive bounty notification pulsed: COMMUNITY EVENT: Sub-Glacial Topography Mapping. FS multipliers active for biological anomalies.
"Lobby check. You guys in?" Leo asked, clicking his mic on.
"Loading in now," Siren_04 replied over the encrypted VoIP channel.
"I'm here," JunkHound chimed in, the fan of his high-end rig whirring softly in the background alongside the faint clatter of someone typing on a mechanical keyboard.
"Just finished assembling my three chassis frames. Got a few hours to burn before dinner."
"Same, wrapped up my morning telework laying down the new HyperLoop hex sectors," Leo said, checking his HUD.
"Ready to make some easy FS?"
"Always," JunkHound grunted.
"Though I swear, if these servers lag out like they did during the Mars exploration event last week, I'm logging off to check out the new map before the FPS drop hits."
"Wait, is this the pre-patch preview for the Antarctica zone?" Siren_04 asked, her avatar materializing in the lobby.
"Bro, everyone in the Discord is saying this is just like the old community map-testing events, except the devs are actually running a live military op on top of it this time."
"Yeah, I heard that too," Leo laughed, cueing up his gear.
"Doing early recon to see the new layout ahead of time and prep the environment before the actual first-person shooter version drops later on? Count me in. Free FS to preview the map is a win-win."
"Stop talking, noob, and queue up," JunkHound groaned.
"Drop in. Three, two, one." The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation. The digital lobby dissolved. For a split second, Leo's rig simulated the sensation of freefall. When the wireframe rendered, he was standing in a massive, dark corridor, the visual overlay filtering the environment in high-contrast neon—green lines indicating stable terrain, jagged red denoting hazards.
Immediately, the servos in Leo's haptic suit whined, restricting his movement as the rig dialed in the crushing weight and atmospheric density of the deep sub-glacial environment.
"Bro, they really cranked the physics engine for this map," JunkHound muttered, his avatar moving sluggishly ahead in the feed.
"Atmospheric pressure is reading off the charts."
"Just push through it," Leo said, bringing up his tagging laser.
"Spread out. Tag everything. We've got hours of grid-mapping before the military instances drop." They drifted down the basalt corridor. To the entities inside the pyramid, the gig-workers didn't exist as threats. To the gamers, the ancient stronghold was just another high-tier map waiting to be looted for luxury spending money.
"Got a trap over here," Siren_04 called out, pointing toward a massive, humming pillar that lit up with a glowing yellow bounty marker on Leo's HUD.
"Looks like an AoE damage aura. Tagging." Ping. +0. 015 FS.
"Nice," Leo muttered. He rounded a corner and stumbled into a cluster of human figures standing in a semi-circle around a dormant terminal. To the naked eye, they were solemn, ancient proxies. To Leo, they looked like broken game mechanics.
"Found NPCs," Leo said over the comms, aiming his reticle at the closest one and watching its face twitch while its digital tether frayed.
"Trash mobs. Their pathing is completely busted. They're just standing here lagging out."
"Any aggro?" JunkHound asked.
"Nah, AI seems brain-dead. Tagging them and moving on." Ping. Ping. Ping. +0. 035 FS.
"Guys," Siren_04's voice dropped.
"Push toward the center waypoint. The architecture is shifting. It's all obsidian down here." Leo trudged forward, his rig fighting him every step of the way to simulate the mounting pressure. The narrow corridor opened into a staggering, vaulted chamber. In the center of the room, a massive pool of liquid churned, glowing with a sickly bioluminescence. The haptics in Leo's gloves vibrated violently as a bright red warning flashed across his visor: EXTREME HAZARD: SPATIAL ANOMALY.
"I'm tracing the perimeter of the pool," JunkHound said, his green laser cutting across the churning liquid.
"That's a 0. 075 FS hazard tag right there."
"Wait," Leo said, stopping dead and zooming his optics in. Standing beside the pool were two distinct entities. The wireframe overlay struggled to render them, registering the pair as dense, localized voids leaking dark, iridescent pixels instead of clean polygons.
"You guys seeing this?" Leo asked.
"Yeah," Siren_04 whispered.
"Look at the density readouts. Those aren't standard NPCs."
"Event bosses," JunkHound said, his voice ticking up with excitement.
"Gotta be. Look at the one in the suit. His character model is literally glitching into the floor." Leo aimed his tagging laser directly at the glitching entity's back, seeing only a massive payout that would fund his next major luxury purchase. He clicked his right index finger. Target Lock: Unknown Heavy Signature 01. Tagged. Target Lock: Unknown Heavy Signature 02. Tagged. Ping. +0. 750 FS.
"Got 'em," Leo grinned, watching his balance jump.
"Bounties claimed. Good work, squad. I'm logging off to grab dinner from the Palladium kitchen." Eight thousand miles away, in a subterranean bunker beneath the ice, Chad's tactical map flared brilliant red as the two Archons were instantly painted, verified, and locked by the waiting mechanized artillery.
