"So we all qualified for Top 64!" Crystal looked proud of us, saying that. I genuinely didn't get how I was considered the Leader when she existed. She took charge of everything with an ease that was natural. This had to be intentional. They just loved to terrorize me.
"Nothin to it!" Gold cackled, high-fiving Green easily.
"Yeah, it was way easy!" Green agreed. I snorted.
"Good to know your confidence hasn't gone anywhere. We're in the 3-on-3 part too, so battles should be a lot more in our control," I noted. Top 64 and 32 would be a 3-on-3 match, while Top 16 would be 4-on-4... and then Top 8 and beyond would be full 6-on-6 battles. Crystal nodded.
"It looks like we won't be facing each other just yet, either. That's good..."
"Wouldn't want any of us to get knocked out earlier than we deserved," I agreed.
"And fighting you guys at anything besides 6-on-6 would be so lame!" Green scowled. We were all in full agreement. Our battles deserved to be with a full team of 6. Crystal suddenly perked up.
"Sorry, Silver... we heard about a pokemon you've been using," she admitted, looking genuinely guilty at the thought. I blinked.
"You mean Achlys? That's okay. I didn't plan on using her against any of you anyway." I waved off her remorse and brought out a Luxury Ball. They watched in awe as my Sneasel appeared, gazing at the pokemon with matching expressions.
"Everyone, this is Achlys, my Sneasel. She's a unique variation... Poison and Fighting type," I introduced, propping up Achlys with a small smile. She gazed at my allies, curiosity riddling her features, but beyond that, she was content to hold me. As always.
"Oh wow! A unique variation of Sneasel?!" Green awed. I nodded my head.
"Hey, Gold, you know those weird evolutions you had?" I questioned.
"Yeah?" Gold replied with interest, staring at Achlys with an impressed gaze.
"Well, turns out, they did exist at one point... from a region called—""Hisui, right?" Crystal finished. I paused at that, staring at her with wide eyes.
"Oh shit... did one of your pokemon evolve into a weird form?" I groaned, leaning back and rubbing my head.
"You told me to distribute treatment fairly. That is what I did." What a smug ass legend. Crystal laughed.
"It's not terrible. In fact, I've found the benefits are even better!" she admitted. I sighed.
"That's good. Sorry about that... when I tell you the reason it happened, you'll laugh... maybe," I muttered.
"I wanna hear what explanation you have for this. Seems like even after the League will be fun!" Gold chuckled. I snorted.
"Anyway, long ago, Sinnoh used to be a region called Hisui. During that time, certain pokemon had different evolutions and forms. I don't know all of them, but you guys have some."
"Wow... the professor updated our dexes. I know you didn't check your Pokedex, Gold, but he prioritized sending you an update," Crystal added with a small smile. Gold's eyes widened.
"Hell yeah! I'll have to study that." I laughed.
"They'll try to incorporate as much as they can from that paper dex. Eventually, we'll get moves they can learn and stuff." Green pouted.
"I'm jealous. Where's my special pokemon from Hisui?" she complained. I rolled my eyes.
"Only you'd be upset by that. Mars was with me, and she got another Sneasel."
"Fooey," she grumbled, puffing her cheeks. I stared at her puffed cheeks with an exasperated expression.
"You're a very lucky girl, Leaf. You'll probably find one eventually," I drawled.
"Bah... you bet I will!" she cheered. Gold and Crystal laughed at the same time. We all grabbed our plates, placing them in the sink and washing them off.
"Dinner was great! You've become a great chef, Silver," Crystal praised. I huffed in mild amusement, allowing her to take the plate out of my hand.
"When your aunt and sister can't cook for shit, you gotta up your game. Thankfully, I had Jasmine there as well."
"You're telling me. My mom practically cooks for us and Crystal's family the whole time! Only Lyra isn't a total dud in the kitchen," Gold added with an amused smile. Crystal flushed.
"Lyra is a great cook... mostly because I'm such a terrible one." I raised a brow at that. Sibling rivalry? Crystal of all people?
"Don't forget your research," I reminded them. Green huffed.
"My next opponent isn't strong. I'll win," she said decisively. I stared strangely at her. Green sounded a lot more like me lately...
"Mine isn't either," I agreed. It was some girl who used a Bellsprout or something. I'd probably let my little ones get some training in. It was 3-on-3 now, so I could play a little riskier. Though... using Achlys like that was already fairly risky.
"I've got some last-minute preparations! Make sure you all get a proper rest," Crystal said cheerfully. We all nodded.
"I still don't get how Crystal isn't the leader," I finally said aloud. Crystal smiled, a slight tinge of red on her cheek.
"I'm fine being second in command. The role is all yours, Boss," she said playfully.
"Crys didn't make the executive decision to change our name without our input," Gold snarked. I twitched as Green nodded eagerly in agreement.
"... Is it bad that I kind of prefer Colors?" Crystal chimed in sheepishly. She stepped back as Gold and Green snapped their heads in her direction in unison.
"What?! You traitor! You aren't supposed to side with him!"
"W-What? I'm not?" Crystal asked dumbly.
"Nope! Rule #1 is to never agree with Silver!" Green scolded.
"Even if he's right, we never let him know. His ego is enough without us boosting it," Gold nodded. I watched in satisfaction as Crystal twitched.
"You get it now, huh?" I asked with an insufferable smirk.
"... I think I do, Boss," she said dully.
"Silver!" I smiled at the increasingly familiar call, laughing as Jasmine lunged into me. I caught her easily, staring at my best friend in slight amusement.
"You've become so bold, you know? I could never imagine you doing this before," I teased. She flushed.
"Just let me be happy to see you!" I laughed at her complaint.
"What's up?" Jasmine was brimming with energy.
"I've been watching all the battles you guys have been having! I'm impressed!"
"I haven't been scouting the other three, so don't tell me about it." She nodded thoughtfully.
"You four are so refreshingly competitive! You want the best possible battle from each other, don't you?" I smirked.
"Yeah, we do. We're going into battles with each other blind. Everyone else is fair game."
"Good! I'd love to see you all make it far! I wish you all could win," Jasmine sighed forlornly. I pat her head.
"You'll just have to be satisfied with your first and bestest friend winning instead," I soothed.
"I'm so glad your confidence hasn't gone anywhere. It uplifts me," she replied. We both laughed at that before Jasmine sobered slightly.
"Have you talked to Green?" she asked seriously. I saw the slight concern in her eyes and frowned.
"We don't wanna overwhelm each other right now, but we're definitely going to talk after the League." Jasmine looked relieved.
"She's been acting strange... I hope she's doing okay. Green was really hurt that you were gone," she mumbled. My frown deepened.
"I'll fix this, don't worry, Jas." She exhaled.
"I trust you. Of course I do." Jasmine stepped back with a smile.
"That's not why I came to find you today. I wanted you to meet a friend of mine!" I scratched my head.
"You sure about that? I wouldn't want you to lose a friend." She gaped slightly.
"Don't speak as if it's destined to happen! You've gotten a lot better, so I think it's safe!" Jasmine backed away at my doubtful look.
"Sure..." I trailed off. I gave her my hand and beckoned.
"Lead the way." She nodded happily, grabbed it, and dragged me to our destination. When Jasmine told me she was going to introduce me to a friend, I correctly assumed Whitney was going to be the person I met. What I did not expect was for my best friend to bring me to what looked like the fucking gym leader's special lounge.
"Well, well, well! Look who it is, Mr.
'Rookie battling Lt. Surge for his first badge while he's rampaging!' Imagine my surprise seeing 4 of those little brats storming the competition!" A boisterous voice immediately boomed. Jasmine squeaked while I put a single finger in my ear.
"Lt. Surge," I greeted boredly.
"You mind quieting down a bit? You're way too loud." The giant of a man laughed just as loud. He was as imposing a figure as ever, somehow making the Raichu on his shoulder look like the Pikachu that normally rested on Ash.
"I've been hearing tales about ya like you're a boogeyman! Can't say I'm too surprised... only a maniac would have battled me for their first badge during that period of time... and then asked me to add more pokemon!" Surge cackled.
"Battling you first was the biggest mistake I made. If I knew the attention I would have gotten because of it, I'd have just skipped your city and gone after someone else," I drawled.
"Oh? You didn't battle Surge first on purpose?" Daisy perked up, sidling next to me with her sisters trailing closely. I eyed them, watching as the blue-haired one (was it Violet?) contemplated losing an arm to no doubt squeeze my cheek. Evidently, the idiot came to the wrong conclusion because she finally reached out and gave it a tiny pinch, drawing it away swiftly with a giggle at my warning snarl. I glared at her.
"No, I don't care who I battle or what order it's in. Green was the one who had a plan, and it was to get harder battles," I grunted.
"That's the spirit! Look at what it got you, the #1 rookie of the year!" Surge cackled, placing a palm on my head and sending me buckling. My eye twitched harshly. I was about 3 seconds away from plotting ways to have Surge disappear. Lily giggled.
"Jasmine, why did you bring Silver here?" she asked curiously. Jasmine just watched the interactions with a small smile, gently grasping me so she could pull me back at a moment's notice if I went feral. For someone so dainty, Jasmine was strong... she just never showed it. I bet it had to do with being around steel types so much, but she had a surprisingly tough body. According to her, she never even got sick.
"Whitney wanted to meet Silver... so I brought him here," she explained. The sisters all balked.
"Is that really a good idea?" they asked in unison. Violet thought it over.
"Well, Silver's actually nice. He did help us after all." Lily agreed readily.
"Totally! Silver's like, really nice! Jasmine says it all the time, so even though I don't believe it, it must be true!" Daisy smiled brightly.
"Thank you again for helping us with the gym. You really motivated us to get better!"
"Shut the hell up," I said blandly.
"That means you're welcome in Silver language," Jasmine chimed in helpfully. Before I could whirl around to bully Jasmine, my senses went off, and an instinctive snarl formed on my face.
"What are you doing here, Demon Spawn?" I sneered and said, "I can't believe you actually left your dingy little woman cave, shut-in loser. What? Did your pokemon force you to leave the moment they sensed me here?"
"The air was rife with a terrible smell, one that I could not ignore," Sabrina replied stonily. The lingering gym leaders blinked owlishly as Sabrina and I glared at each other. She nearly hissed at me, something I gladly returned.
"Are the rumors of these two hating each other true?" Daisy whispered.
"I thought it was a joke..." Lily trailed off.
"I watched your battles. Sloppy. You could do better with the psychic techniques of your Zoroark," Sabrina scolded. I rolled my eyes.
"I'm not showing all my cards yet. Obviously, I could have won easier, but there's no point going all out," I responded. Sabrina hmphed quietly and said, "Good. Remember what I said. You are not to lose to anyone but me." A snarl appeared on my face.
"Oh geez. Thanks, old lady. I'll take your advice and thank you for it in the next letter I write you!" Our glares deepened.
"Make your trip a short one. I cannot rest well knowing you are in such proximity to me."
"I'll stay here the whole day. I got no battles anytime soon, isn't that right, Jasmine?" I asked smugly.
"M-Maybe it is a bad idea to have you meet Whitney," Jasmine mumbled. Surge snorted in amusement.
"I've seen it all. Little Ms. Psychic is actually reacting to things," he said, lumbering away as Raichu cackled. Sabrina scoffed, turning away. The psychic looked like she was about to teleport off, but was interrupted by me chucking a poke ball at the back of her head.
"Oops. Guess you really aren't a pokemon," I said innocently.
"Wow, he has a death wish," Lily whispered to her sisters.
"I've never seen a soul do this to Sabrina," Violet whispered, taking a step back as Sabrina's eyes began glowing.
"Wretched. Filthy. Abomination," Sabrina hissed, whirling around to face me... And seeing me trotting away with a stunned Jasmine.
"Luckily for you, I actually don't have to be here for long. I've got to prepare for my match tomorrow," I drawled.
"I will find you after the League. You require more training," she intoned emotionlessly. I waved mockingly.
"See ya, Silver! If you ever stop at Cerulean, visit us! We'll give you a free show!" Daisy offered cheerfully. That sounded more like a gift for Gold.
"Sure, whatever." Jasmine sighed as she followed me.
"It hasn't even been that long, and you and Sabrina are going at it. Didn't Lorelei tell you two to get along?" I rolled my eyes.
"We only get along when she's watching. All the gloves are off otherwise." My best friend let out a tired exhale.
"How is something like this even possible? I've never even seen Sabrina blink..." I pat her head.
"You'll understand one day, Jasmine. Maybe you'll even have a trainer to terrorize yourself." She waved her hands frantically.
"I don't think I'll ever have a trainer like that! It sounds stressful!" I chuckled.
"You never know. You've been hanging around me long enough that you might just do something crazy." Jasmine knocked quietly on a door, only to gasp as I rolled my eyes and banged on it.
"I'm coming! I'm coming! Don't knock so hard! Jeez!" a feminine voice shouted.
"Be nice. Whitney isn't that much of a crybaby unless you beat her in a battle, but still," Jasmine urged.
"Relax," I drawled, right as the door swung open. A pink-haired girl greeted us. She was short, standing probably an inch taller than Jasmine, with wide pink eyes. She had an athletic build, a lithe body wrapped in a white shirt with gold buttons and red stripes, along with denim shorts. Her outfit was finished off with long black-and-blue striped socks and white and red shoes that matched her shirt.
"Oh, Jasmine! And you brought your friend!" Whitney cheered, pulling Jasmine into a tight hug. I watched Jasmine smile bashfully, returning the hug before releasing her fellow gym leader.
"H-Hello, Whitney! Yes, you wanted to meet my first friend, so I brought him over..." she gestured demurely to me. Whitney's eyes glittered as she stared at me.
"He's pretty cute!" she beamed.
"W-Whitney!" Jasmine scolded.
"Not as cute as me, of course... but still!" Whitney puffed up, holding out a hand for me to grab.
"Nice to meetcha, Silver! I'm Whitney, the prettiest girl in Johto!" I snorted, catching her hand.
"You certainly have the ego of someone who thinks they're the prettiest girl." For her obvious confidence, I had to give it to her. Whitney was actually pretty. There was a reason she was one of the most popular people in all of Johto.
"You don't agree?!" she gasped. I rolled my eyes.
"I have no opinion." Whitney shook her head rapidly.
"Nuh uh, I don't believe you. You gotta think someone is the cutest... is it Jasmine?" she asked curiously.
"Whitney!" Jasmine shouted, looking mortified.
"Sure," I replied with a shrug.
"Silver!" she squeaked, flushing in mortification. Whitney put a finger to her lip at my response.
"You're funny! Okay, I can accept that. You just think I'm the 2nd!" I let out a disbelieving chuckle.
"You've got a few screws loose, don't you? I guess it's a requirement to be a gym leader." As expected, Whitney reeled back in disbelief.
"Who do you think you are?! Jasmine, your friend is SO not cute anymore!" she scowled.
"She disagrees. I have proof," I drawled, pulling the stunned Jasmine into a side hug. She moaned in disbelief, holding her face.
"This was a terrible idea. P-Please don't show those messages," she pleaded. Whitney and I laughed for different reasons.
"So you're the one who made Jas so confident..." Whitney muttered, inspecting me from all angles. I let her raise my arm, test my hair, and push my cheek in just enough before I warningly bared my fangs.
"Something like that. You're the extrovert that adopted her when Green isn't around?" I questioned. Whitney nodded cheerfully.
"Something like that! I noticed her changes and got curious, and then we started talking, and I realized I didn't know that much about her outside of like business! Then I was like... wait, we're like the same age, we should totally be friends!"
"When we aren't busy, I like to ambush and force her to come get dinner with me! That's how I learned about you! She was texting you in between our talks!"
"And do you like that Whitney is your friend?" I asked Jasmine. She blinked in confusion.
"Of course! I don't really talk to the other Gym Leaders... but recently, Whitney and the sisters have been very nice!" I mulled that over.
"Good. Keep being her friend, or I'll make you disappear, Ditzy Girl," I said casually.
"Silver, you can't say that! S-Stop treating me like I'm your little sister," Jasmine complained. I snorted and honestly told her, "You're not just my little sister... you're the whole gang's little sister." Jasmine looked at me in disbelief. It was honestly still as funny as ever to see how red I could make her face.
"Jasmine's the only other gym leader that'll listen to me speak and say something interesting! The other Johto leaders are so boring," Whitney sighed. I leaned back curiously at that.
"Oh yeah?" She nodded enthusiastically.
"I don't even have to get into detail about Chuck or Pryce! They're old! Morty's kinda cute, and he's really laid back, but sometimes he's creepy, and he's friends with a creep too! Bugsy and Falkner are like... I dunno, not really interesting to talk to. Falkner's always talking about living up to his dad's legacy or whatever... and Bugsy is in love with bugs and only ever wants to talk about them." Christ, she could talk. Whitney sighed.
"Then there's Clair. She's not even worth talking to! Could it kill her to smile a little? She'd be so much cuter if she did!" I mulled her words over.
"Yeah... you Johto leaders sound a little boring, besides you. I'm convinced most of the Kanto gym leaders have some mental issue, so at least you have that over them," I shrugged.
"Rude! Chuck's pretty interesting... he's just old!" Whitney scolded. I shrugged.
"It's the truth. Jasmine was super boring before finding me."
"D-Don't say that," Jasmine admonished me.
"You're the one who told me that you want to redecorate your house before I visit it because of how barren it was." She squeaked.
"Y-You remember that?!" I shot her a strange look.
"Of course I do. Why would I forget? You even mentioned buying an extra bed if I ever wanted to sleep over." Jasmine smiled shakily, abruptly pulling me into a tight hug. I blinked owlishly, just patting her back and letting it happen.
"Sometimes I have to remind myself that you actually do listen to everything I say," she admitted. I rolled my eyes.
"Oh, please. You're nothing compared to Green. She tries to explain stuff to me while I'm half asleep, when she's half asleep, with a mouthful, while she's brushing her teeth... Genuinely a freak."
"That's just her charm!" Jasmine giggled.
"Ugh! Way too cute!" Whitney keeled over with a pained expression. The normal specialist recovered incredibly quickly, clapping her hands.
"I changed my mind again! You're okay in my book, Silver! Thanks for encouraging Jasmine so much!" I smirked wryly.
"Thanks for keeping her company in Johto. She tends to miss me a lot, so I worry about her. When I show up to terrorize you all, I'll go easy on you." Whitney suddenly perked up.
"Hold on, you're the one who suddenly sent Jasmine on that rampage, right?! She told me that it was you!" She looked utterly outraged by my nod.
"Why would you do that?! She crushed me! That battle was so not fun! Do you have any idea how hard it is for me to battle her steel types?!" Whitney raged.
"S-Sorry, I had no choice in the matter," Jasmine mumbled. I was utterly unfazed by the outrage.
"It was to prove a point. You weren't my main target; you were just collateral." Jasmine hid behind me at Whitney's expression.
"C-Collateral?!"
"Yeah," I nodded, waving my hand dismissively.
"I already knew Jasmine was stronger than you, but I need Jasmine to know she's stronger than every gym leader in Johto... and she's going to prove that. Just be glad you weren't like that bird boy." Whitney huffed.
"Well... I guess that's true; I saw what happened to Falkner." I smirked.
"Don't feel too bad. This is for Jasmine's sake, and you're her friend, right?"
"I'd be her best friend if not for you!" Whitney puffed out her cheeks, turning her head. My eyes narrowed.
"Too bad; She's my best friend, you little poacher. All these people wanna be interested in her after the work I put in. You wouldn't even be her friend if it wasn't for me, so I should be getting thanked," I scoffed. Jasmine sighed behind me.
"Don't be jealous, Silver. You know you're my best friend... and you wanted me to have more friends!" she pointed out.
"I know what I wanted. I just don't need those others thinking they stand a chance. Only Green can rival me when it comes to you," I muttered.
"You're a different kind of monster," Jasmine said honestly. Whitney rolled her eyes.
"No wonder you became so confident, Jasmine. Your best friend is so abrasive that you have no choice but to adjust to him."
"Whatever you say, ditzy."
"I'm not ditzy!" Jasmine coughed loudly.
"I think now's a good time to call it! Next time, I'll introduce you to Green, Whitney! She's my other best friend and she's much nicer," she assured.
"Ah, but I wanted to talk a little more. I heard he has a super cute Milotic and a super weird Sneasel," Whitney complained.
"Another time. He has to focus on the League!" Jasmine assured. I allowed Jasmine to push me out of the room with an amused expression.
"See ya, Silver! Good luck with the League! We'll talk more afterwards!" Whitney waved happily, already back in her cheerful mood. I waved once.
"See ya, crybaby."
"I'm not a crybaby! I'm just competitive!" Whitney barked.
"Okay see you, Whitney, bye!" Jasmine said quickly, shutting the door and pushing me forward. She was so eager to push me out that she didn't see that there was someone in front of us until it was too late. I was summarily pushed into something blue and grunted at the feeling of a firm stomach. Wow, this person was tall. Jasmine heard the grunt and glanced up. She squeaked.
"Uh oh..." she mumbled. Uh oh? I pulled back with a small scowl, shaking my head and glancing up. What greeted me was a tall woman. Even taller than my mom, who was the tallest woman I knew. She had a head of blue hair, blue eyes, and an all-blue outfit. The outfit in question was a skin-tight bodysuit, blue gloves, and blue knee-length boots. But of course, the best part was the black cape hanging off her shoulder. Fucking ridiculous.
"Gym Leader Clair! We're so sorry, we did not see you there," Jasmine bowed hastily. If Clair looked bothered by the fact that I just got a faceful of firm abs, she didn't show it... or maybe she did. Her face was the epitome of resting bitch, kind of like mine, and she looked down at us with those sharp blue eyes.
"I would implore you to watch where you're going next time," she said bluntly.
"O-Of course! Sorry again!" Jasmine exclaimed. Clair huffed slightly.
"Unbelievable. I expected more out of you, Gym Leader Jasmine. But I suppose children will inevitably act like children..." My eyes narrowed into something dangerous as Jasmine stammered out some words.
"She already apologized for a mistake that wasn't her fault. Just accept it and move on," I said blandly. Jasmine squeaked again, this time in genuine horror. It said something that I somehow horrified my best friend more than the strongest gym leader in Johto had done. Clair's eyes immediately shifted over to me. It was easy to tell she was a Wataru because even with the different eye color, she still had those reptilian slits. Wataru tended to have yellow eyes, but Clair clearly did not abide by that rule.
Maybe her descent into insecurity began at birth. I wonder if she had a parent outside of the clan.
"It is not you who decides whether I should forgive someone or not. Quite arrogant of you, child." Her voice was almost dismissive, not taking me seriously at all. Oh boy, Jasmine shouldn't have been warning me to be nice to Whitney. That warning wasn't even needed because Whitney was actually pretty chill... I was about to raise hell on this bitch. I had already used my be nice to a person card... and it had been a really long time since I really let loose.
"Silver," Jasmine pleaded unsuccessfully, sensing my intent clear as day. She weakly tugged the back of my coat, not using the force I knew she was capable of.
"Gym Leader Clair... I didn't think you'd be so petty just because someone crashed into your abs. They're impressive, nothing to be ashamed of... unless you're insecure about being a strong woman," I greeted, gauging her up and down. Seriously, she was tall. There was no doubt in my mind that she was at least 6 ft; Wataru and their freakish genes. I watched her gaze narrow even further at the emphasis I put on the word insecure.
"You'd do best to watch your tone, boy. I don't take kindly to disrespect, especially from one who looks nearly half my age," she warned coldly. I rolled my eyes.
"Look at you. Looking down on everyone else as a form of compensation just to make yourself feel better. Maybe you should switch things up... because you still look miserable."
"Oh no," Jasmine sighed despondently.
"What did you say?" Clair said warningly. I felt the pulse in the air clear as day, but some silly little dragon in human skin wasn't going to scare me.
"I mean, I get it. Clair Wataru, basically the little sister of Lance... and inferior in every single way. I'd be seriously pissed off, too, if nothing I did could match up to a genuine freak of nature. Why couldn't I be that one in a million? Why did we have to be born in the same generation... why did we have to be cousins?" I watched with a winning smile as veins immediately formed on Clair's face. One thing you don't do around me is try to bully Jasmine.
"What did you just say?" Her voice came out in a low growl, sounding almost as animalistic as the dragon's they raised. Clair clenched a fist; I did not doubt that she could probably bench double my body weight and more. Did I care? Well, ask Articuno if I did. You'd probably get flash frozen the moment it realized you were talking about me.
"Your inferiority complex must have started when you were a kid. I know I'd have a lot to say to someone who needs to be repeated to, so those stuffy members of your clan must have been killing themselves when they had to repeat themselves constantly to you. You heard exactly what I said, so don't ask me to repeat myself," I drawled, friendly smile on my face as my daggerlike gaze stared her down. Her eyes flashed, and she immediately reached out, grabbing the scruff of my coat with a snarl.
Like I predicted, she easily hoisted me up, forcing me to stare at her face.
"Ah! W-Whitney, come help please!" Jasmine shouted, turning and banging on the door.
"Watch your tone, child. I will not allow a novice to speak to me as if we are equals. Do not think that just because my cousin favors you, I will allow you to say what you wish," Clair spat. I was utterly unfazed.
"Hoh? So you do recognize me... and would you look at that, the little brat is upset that her big brother Lance thinks other people are more interesting than her. You must be frothing at the mouth at the fact I get along so well with him," I said mockingly. Clair's voice grew increasingly feral.
"I am loath to strike a child, but I will not hesitate to put you in your place."
"Can't hear you over the sound of you drooling over your brother. Is it Wataru tradition to wear capes that stupid, or are you just following in his footsteps so that he can notice you? Bit freaky, don't you think?" I retorted. That seemed to do it. I watched in amusement as Clair raised a hand before I reached out. She let out a shout of surprise as I pinched a nerve that almost instantly made her collapse on her butt. Thanks, Janine.
I touched the floor easily as she dropped me, dusting myself off as if I didn't just get hoisted off the ground by some Amazon of a woman.
"Don't touch me, you 2nd-rate Wataru," I scolded, listening to Whitney and Jasmine's gasp of horror. Clair's eyes went bloodshot, sharp teeth bared as if she were going to tear into me. The gym leader lunged at me, only for a sheen of purple to wrap around her, halting her in place.
"This is unbefitting of you, Gym Leader Clair. I would appreciate it if you did not attack my student. This is your only warning," Sabrina intoned emotionlessly. Clair twitched harshly. Her bloodshot gaze shifted towards Sabrina, all feral with very little intelligence.... But even Clair knew messing with Sabrina was not a good idea. Huh, maybe I really was insane.
"I... you..." She looked as if she wanted to say something more, but just stormed off instead with a guttural growl. Her fury was palpable, and I watched as she practically bulldozed a teen who could only be Falkner. He tumbled to the ground with a shout of surprise, eyes wide in confusion. I turned towards Sabrina with a raised brow.
"You're defending me?" I asked in mild confusion. Sabrina fixed her hair idly and simply said, "I am the only one allowed to hate you so visibly. No one else has that privilege... and I will not allow anyone to bully Gym Leader Jasmine." I smirked crookedly.
"We can agree on that. I wouldn't let anyone besides me terrorize you either."
"I find myself disgusted that I'm even agreeing with you," Sabrina said honestly.
"Ditto," I grunted.
"What a twisted relationship you two have," Jasmine held her head before pulling me into a tight hug.
"Thank you for defending me." I smiled easily at her wobbly voice.
"You don't have to thank me for that. People who throw their weight around to get their way hate me... especially when they do it in your presence. I'll bring down the force of hell if they try to do that." Jasmine sniffed, pulling back before hugging Sabrina as well.
"Thank you as well, Sabrina. Silver would have escalated that situation." Sabrina looked mildly surprised before slowly returning the hug.
"Of course, Gym Leader Jasmine. Gym Leader Clair has a difficult personality, one that revolves around her pride, akin to the dragons they train."
"Easy way of saying she's a bitch," I snorted. Sabrina scoffed.
"While she may not be aware... I did her a favor. She does not have the self-control that I have to deal with you."
"Is that your way of saying you'd have killed me by now?" I crooned, grinning mockingly at her. Believe it or not, Sabrina actually did do Clair a favor. If she hadn't interfered, our altercation would have escalated to a level that would no doubt have left me firmly in the stage of "terrorize this dumbass until she retires and goes into hiding". Lucky her... not. She already fucked up.
"No... kill is far too polite a word for what I think you deserve. That would mean you are gone to avoid my wrath," she said seriously. I blinked at that.
"Huh... have you been reading my mind? Are you a fan of me? That sounds like something I'd say."
"This is what I mean."
"Holy... Kanto doesn't mess around," Whitney muttered, watching the spot Clair was just at. The bubbly gym leader turned towards me with wide eyes.
"I've never seen anyone stand up to Clair like that besides Lance and the Elite 4!" Whitney exclaimed. Sabrina huffed.
"The Kanto Gym Leaders simply do not bother with her. I have never paid any attention to what Gym Leader Clair has had to say unless it is a professional matter." I stared.
"Jasmine, you're going to crush her by the end of next year. I won't accept anything else," I said firmly. Jasmine spluttered.
"W-Well..."
"Either you do it, or I'm taking matters into my own hands. You do not want me to deal with Clair," I said serenely. Whitney shuddered.
"Scary..." Jasmine opened her mouth, took a long look at Sabrina, and shut it.
"I'll defeat her!" she said, determination filling her with unnatural speed.
"Why did you suddenly gain so much motivation after glancing at me?" Sabrina asked, tilting her head. Jasmine just began the process of dragging me out of the building again.
"This was a disaster... but at least your meeting with Whitney went well!"
"Really well! Come to Johto!" Whitney cheered.
"Sure. You aren't all bad in hindsight. Just a little boring," I decided. As Jasmine dragged me away, I heard a dazed voice, likely Falkner's, ask, "What is going on?" Heh, poor guy. That was twice now where he was collateral to my interference... and I didn't even properly meet him. Here's to hoping he's an asshole so I feel slightly less guilty. Mars raked a hand through my hair, idly testing my ponytail with a satisfied smile.
"Bored much?" I drawled, allowing her to tamper with my hair to her heart's content. As long as she didn't cut that cursed cowlick, something even she seemed hellbent against, I didn't care what she did. Besides, she had a damn talent for cutting hair. I could honestly see her making a killing as a hairstylist. Crazy to think it was just a little hobby for her.
"May as well fill the time until they call your name. A ponytail is pretty quick and easy to do, but I'll take it back out after." I felt a pulse of amusement at that. Right on cue, my name was called, prompting me to rise.
"Another day, another battle," I mused. Mars shook her head.
"What did you say about your opponent today? Some girl named Jeanette?"
"I dunno how she made it this far with her team, but I won't underestimate her, I guess," I muttered.
"For all your ego, you also prepare a lot. If you aren't sweating it, there's probably a good reason," she replied. I side-eyed my twin, even as we approached the entrance.
"Wow, acting like a real coach, huh?" She shoved me slightly.
"Shut up." I laughed in amusement at her grumble, then stepped into the light. The moment I stepped out, the crowd boomed with energy. Cheering and booing filled the stadium, prompting me to smile. Looks like my interview was well-received. I was getting quite a lot more boos this time around.
"I hear a lot of girls cheering," Mars teased.
"Go to your seat, you little pest," I drawled. She chuckled, marching to her seat with an annoying smirk. I tuned out the announcer. He was likely just going through his usual welcome to Top 64 speech, so I would take the opportunity to stare at my opponent. Jeanette Fisher wasn't a name I remembered, but she was a character I did know. My uniquely good memory when it came to all things pokemon recalled that Ash fought this girl. I didn't normally watch the show, but I tuned into the Conferences when they aired.
We were on a standard battlefield, the elemental ones gone now. There would be no use of the terrain to your extreme advantage... because that wouldn't be the fairest at this stage.
"On the red side, hailing from Crimson City, we have Jeanette Fisher!" My opponent seemed popular. She was dressed in a traditional kimono, with a pair of green eyes and dark purple hair. On her side, which I'm sure wasn't legal, she had an entire cheering squad. They were even throwing petals at her. In comparison to me with just Mars... wow. Attention whore much? Oh boy. Jeanette waved demurely at the crowd, a small smile on her face.
"On the green side, hailing from Viridian City, we have the rookie Silver!" I didn't really interact with the crowd like others did. Wasn't really my style. Lately, I haven't been as rude to randoms. I was still antagonistic, no doubt... but my time with Team Rocket and then Mewtwo left me a little muted. I suppose I should change that. Can't let people think I'm suddenly approachable.
"Trainer Jeanette, you will release your pokemon first!" She nodded, grabbing one of her poke balls.
"This pokemon will create quite the buzz. Beedrill, go!" I looked unfazed. I just grabbed one of my Luxury Balls and tossed it. You might be reading a pirated copy. Look for the official release to support the author.
"Apollo," I decided eventually. For the time being, I'd be using both the Charca's for this battle. It was the cost of having twins... You use one, you have to use the other. That's also the reason I gave him a nickname, because it would definitely hurt him a lot if I only gave one to Ifrit. Until I gave Apollo to Green like I intended, he was my pokemon. Apollo may have been a clone of Ifrit, but the two were developing quite differently.
The cloned Charcadet was stronger, something that had been consistent since his creation. His flames were stronger, and he utilized them in a way that made me realize that Armarogue would be perfect for him.
"Wow! Yet another rare pokemon in the form of Charcadet! Where does he find them?!" Jeez, could they shut up for one second?
"The contestants are set! Beedrill vs Charcadet! Begin!"
"Toxic Spikes!" Jeanette began immediately, stretching her arm out dramatically.
"Fire Spin," I retorted, utterly ignoring her first order. As Beedrill spat out an array of spikes, it was halted midway by a fiery flame surrounding it. The Fire Spin blocked the rest of the spikes from firing, while striking Beedrill as well. Apollo stared coolly, unfazed by the loud cheering of the crowd. He was in battle mode now, a serious air surrounding him.
"Keep up the pressure. Incinerate," I drawled. His flames flared up, Apollo immediately slipping into the stance to fire a steady stream of fire. I was satisfied to see some of the Toxic Spikes getting burned up in the process. It left the battlefield a lot more bare than if we hadn't somewhat stopped that.
"Harden, Beedrill! You won't escape those flames in time!" Jeanette instructed hastily. Beedrill buzzed uncomfortably, a sheen covering its body that did a poor job of protecting it from Apollo's flames. Jeanette bit her lip.
"Get out those flames, Beedrill! Drill run!" Beedrill burst through the Fire Spin, charging Apollo with both its needle arms outstretched. I huffed in amusement.
"Lava Plume." The Drill Run never landed. Gouts of fire and smog erupted from Apollo, catching the charging Beedrill off guard. Beedrill howled its name as the Lava Plume sprayed in every direction, capturing it easily and ruthlessly. The bug type was a charred mess as it collapsed onto the floor. It occasionally twitched, but that was the best it had to offer.
"Beedrill is unable to battle. The winner is Charcadet!"
"Unbelievable! That little Charcadet made quick work of Jeanette's Beedrill!" Apollo placed both his cylinder hands together and bowed respectfully at Beedrill's burned body. His training in his ranged attacks was coming along nicely. He was a little beast, even as a Charcadet... The boons of being a clone created by Mewtwo, I suppose. At least it just motivated Ifrit, who refused to be bested by his twin.
"I was... not aware you owned a fire type," Jeanette said. She bit her lip in contemplation, gauging Charcadet with a narrowed gaze.
"Is that so? I wonder what exactly you thought I was gonna use," I mocked. She flinched back slightly, and I smirked as the cheering squad glared balefully at me.
"This one won't be as easy to deal with! Scyther, go!" Jeanette shouted. My eyes narrowed. Jeanette kept her Scyther in this stage to better utilize its speed. It honestly wasn't a bad idea. Scyther and Scizor were among the few pokemon where not evolving wasn't a terrible idea. They were significantly faster than their evolution, after all, sacrificing power and defense for speed and agility. It was simply a matter of preference.
Bugsy, for instance, had both a Scyther and a Scizor on his team who served as double aces for the young guy. They both had their advantages. It was pretty cool.
"The contestants are set! Scyther vs Charcadet! Begin!"
"Fire Spin."
"Agility!" Scyther flitted around the field immediately, body surging with speed as those tiny wings flapped swiftly. It evaded the fire that had doomed its previous ally, soaring across at impressive speeds to my Charcadet.
"Close the gap! It prefers to fight at a distance!"
"Clear Smog," I muttered. I watched in satisfaction as Apollo exhaled the dense smoke. It filled the field, visibly slowing down the Scyther who had been speeding initially. Despite that, Scyther still reached his position quite fast.
"Double Hit!" Too fast. Apollo cried out as Scyther's sharp claws connected with him. The strength behind the attack sent his little body flying backwards. With some quick thinking, I watched as he conjured a quick burst of flames behind him that halted his flight. He landed, staring at the Scyther with narrowed eyes.
"Double Team, Scyther!" Jeanette pressed.
"Clear Smog again. Follow it up with Flamethrower," I frowned. Scyther's clones were immediately banished, getting a hiss of annoyance from the mantis. It weaved the Flamethrower with its superior speed, closing the gap once more.
"Lava Plume!" I barked.
"Don't allow it! Finish this with Wing Attack!" Scyther was just too fast. Before Apollo could erupt, sharp wings carved into him. He cried in pain before his eyes flashed with a rare fury. As his final message, he erupted with the Lava Plume, getting a howl of pain from the bug. Satisfied with his work, Apollo shut his eyes and collapsed.
"Charcadet is unable to battle. The winner is Scyther!" I huffed in amusement at the roaring. If only they knew who my third pokemon was. Well, I wouldn't need to use it. I was confident I could win with just two.
"An incredible display by Jeanette's Scyther! Utilizing its superior speed and power, it handily defeated that Charcadet with a few burns to show for it!" I hummed in contemplation, gauging the ruffled Scyther. True to the announcer's words, some burns littered its body, periodically igniting and getting an uncomfortable grunt out of it.
"Ifrit. Let's wrap this up." Murmurs of confusion rang out as I released another Charcadet from the ball. Jeanette's eyes furrowed in confusion as Ifrit took the stage. I could see the gears turning in her head and laughed in amusement. While she still thought this was Loki, I would wrap this up quickly.
"What's this?! Another Charcadet?!" The announcer shouted.
"The contestants are set! Scyther vs Charcadet! Begin!"
"Fury Cutter!" Jeanette shouted immediately. I smiled. There was a reason why Loki was one of my most valuable fighters. Even when he wasn't actually battling, his presence was a force that was felt in the back of every opponent's mind.
"Confuse Ray." Ifrit's eyes, which had been inspecting the large crowd in awe, narrowed the moment the match began. Jeanette's eyes widened in horror as Scyther suddenly stopped in its mad dash to what she thought was a disguised Loki. Then, it started howling madly, thrashing in every direction as it fought an unknown enemy. Confuse Ray was one of the stronger confusion effects. Not all confusions were equal. Some made you dizzy, others disoriented you... Confuse Ray made you see things that weren't there.
There was a reason it was classified as a ghost-type move, and that was because it used distortion energy. Case in point, the howling Scyther was scrambling about. It was lucky we were on the standard battlefield, because it would have been badly injured if we weren't.
"Scyther, listen to me! Use Bug Buzz!" Jeanette shouted unsuccessfully.
"I don't think so. Flame Charge," I interjected coolly. Scyther continued to howl its name, reeling back as Ifrit, full body tackled him with flames surrounding his body. My Charcadet didn't come out unscathed, falling victim to Scyther flailing its dangerous arms about, but he was none the worse for wear.
"Keep it up, Ifrit. Flamethrower." Ifrit was utterly relentless, having already charged the attack before I gave out the order. Honestly, it seemed like he was just waiting for me to endorse his ruthlessness.
"C'mon, Scyther, hang in there! Use X-Scissor!" Scyther roared under the gust of flames, but miraculously, Jeanette's voice managed to pierce the dense fog. The mantis mustered up the required energy, sickly green covering its claws. It struck Ifrit, burns on its body weakening it enough to only send my Charcadet backwards with a tiny grunt. Ifrit's eyes narrowed; he sent a Night Shade forward for Scyther's efforts, sending the mantis reeling backwards until it collapsed.
"Scyther is unable to battle! The winner of this match is Charcadet!" Jeanette looked stunned.
"It's actually a Charcadet?" she mumbled in confusion.
"What clued you in?" I taunted, an insufferable smirk on my face. My opponent colored slightly, coughing gently into her kimono.
"It's not yet over. With this, I will turn the tide! Bellsprout, go!" This was the headscratcher pokemon. Jeanette's Bellsprout... To be honest, I genuinely have no clue how she got her badges, but there was something there. Plenty of her badges were some I never heard of, either, which meant they belonged to minor gyms... Regardless, this Bellsprout was her ace, and it was probably one of the stronger Bellsprouts around...
I know she refused to evolve it, which led me to believe she had to have some training at Johto's Sprout Tower.
"Keep your guard up, Ifrit. It's strong," I warned idly. Not strong when up against any of my actual fighters, but for Ifrit, it would be a tall task. Ifrit scoffed at my warning, prompting me to roll my eyes.
"Don't go throwing a tantrum later if you lose," I muttered.
"The contestants are set! Bellsprout vs Charcadet. Begin!" Ifrit lunged, flames licking his body as he charged the stern Bellsprout. As he reached the grass type, I watched with a mildly amused gaze as Bellsprout weaved Ifrit's Flame Charge. Vines formed from its lithe body, immediately singing as they neared my fire type. Despite that, it was quick enough that Ifrit was slammed onto the ground from the attack. Ifrit cried out in surprise at that, eyes wide in confusion.
Two sharp leaves rushed him at incredible speeds, prompting my fire type to hastily duck, sped up by the repeated uses of Flame Charge. He wasn't able to gather his bearings as a poisonous leaf jabbed him right on his little helmet head, sending him tumbling back to my side.
"Don't underestimate your foe if I tell you not to," I scolded slightly, watching him pull himself up. Ifrit rubbed an arm across his face, a heinous glare forming. I saw that vengeful gleam in his eyes and snorted. He really was my pokemon, alright. Out of battle, he was Green's son through and through... but in one? It was a solid mixture of both of us, but I took the shine.
"Good. Let's win this, you and I," I assured. Jeanette let out a haughty laugh, putting her mouth behind her hand.
"Quite confident now that your Bellsprout got a good little hit," I sneered.
"The tables turn here, Silver! I'm prepared to mount a comeback!" she stated confidently.
"We'll see about that," I grunted, glaring at the cheering group. I was satisfied to hear them squeak.
"Razor Leaf, Bellsprout!"
"Flame Charge. Stay close." Flames shrouded Ifrit, and he dashed away from the two sharp leaves making their way to him. He lunged towards Bellsprout, keeping the flames steady as he sped across the field at increasing velocity.
"Evade and then Poison Jab!" Bellsprout weaved the Flame Charge, leaves glowing with poison once more. It attempted to strike Ifrit, who leaned backwards to avoid it, and my Charcadet retaliated with his own fist, punching forward and watching as Bellsprout also leaned away. A cruel glint entered his eyes at that. With his fist still outstretched, a bluish-white flame shot out, colliding solidly with Bellsprout. Jeanette gasped.
"Oh no, Bellsprout!"
"Nice Will-O-Wisp," I praised, watching the body immediately ignite. Ifrit was far less honorable than Apollo. He was willing to get his hands dirty so long as it meant he would have the advantage. I had given him the go-ahead to act a little independently from me if he felt the need, not nearly on the level of Loki, but enough to fuel his tricky style.
"Up the pace. Clear Smog." Ifrit belched out the white smoke, vanishing into it immediately. I saw two flaming eyes in the fog before they vanished as well.
"Be aware, Bellsprout! It will attempt to bathe you in fire!" Jeanette ordered. I rolled my eyes.
"Pay attention, dumbass. Ifrit and Apollo don't fight the same." No sooner had I said that did a Night Shade from the fog collide with the pained Bellsprout. It cried out at that, before a figure tackled it from the back, body covered in flames. Ifrit's eyes flashed, but he dipped right back into the heavy fog. Bellsprout whirled around in a panic, but Ifrit was already gone to the next spot.
"Magical Leaf, Bellsprout! Find him with that!" Jeanette said, desperation clear in her voice. Bellsprout pulled itself up, groaning as its burns flared once more. It summoned the magical leaves and fired them off, eyes trained on the trajectory... and watching with wide eyes as it suddenly turned and tried to cut through the owner. It attempted to move, only for two stubby arms to wrap around its ridiculously slim waist.
I watched proudly as Ifrit hissed something in the Bellsprout's ear, no doubt some type of obscenity that he picked up from me.
"Oh no, you have to escape!" Jeanette screamed. Bellsprout attempted to do so, but cried instead as the flames flared up once more. Not to mention, Ifrit was burning with his own fire. He shamelessly used Bellsprout's body to weather the Magical Leaf before I waved my hand.
"Lava Plume," I instructed with a small smile. With his unforgiving grip, Ifrit glowed, and Jeanette could only watch in horror as he bathed Bellsprout in the explosion of heavy flames. Ifrit stepped back with a tiny pant, satisfaction in his gaze as Bellsprout collapsed. I smiled. Yes, Ifrit and Apollo were very different fighters. They were both Charcadet, wielding similar moves... but they executed those moves very differently. Apollo sought to overwhelm with his flames, having naturally higher firepower.
Ifrit used his moves to get close and personal, winning by any means necessary.
"Bellsprout is unable to battle, which means Charcadet and Silver are the winners of this match!" the referee announced.
"A decisive victory for Trainer Silver! Not even Bellsprout's might was able to shatter his composure!" Ifrit snapped out of battle mode, waving happily and getting the crowd to roar even louder. Not even their distaste for me was enough to overpower my Charcadet's overwhelming adorableness. He ran in circles, cheering and jumping, before leaping into my arms.
"Your arrogance almost made you lose to a Bellsprout," I scolded slightly. Ifrit beamed up at me and cried out as if to say, "But it didn't!" I rolled my eyes. He continued beaming up at me even as I placed him in his ball. That was a good battle for them. I'm glad they got some action because I don't think they'd be usable later on. I'm not sure when I'll be using Arachne either. With one of her types practically disabled, my little bug would be hard-pressed to get a victory. I doubted she cared, though.
Arachne seemed fairly chill about whether she battled or not. She was annoying, but kind of cute. I'd have to give her special attention after the League.
"A decisive victory, Silver," Jeanette said. I stared at her. She didn't seem too upset on paper, but I could see the tiny tremors that went beyond the roaring of the crowd. Bellsprout lay limp in her hands, burns on the little fella's body that made me gauge it.
"Not a bad fight. I don't know the logic behind keeping your Bellsprout a Bellsprout, but I won't question it," I nodded. She smiled shakily.
"Next time, I will put up more of a fight," she promised. I tilted my head.
"Are you sure about that? Ifrit and Apollo are on the lower end of my team. My third pokemon would have swept you all alone." Jeanette flinched back.
"I... see. I don't doubt your claims." She bowed hastily, turning away and dashing off. I didn't wait to watch her go, just making my way to Mars.
"Who was your last, anyway?" Mars asked.
"Ares." She gaped.
"S-Seriously? Isn't that a bit overkill...?"
"Yeah, I'm glad I didn't use her. She would genuinely probably kill me if I made her face off against a Bellsprout. And then she'd eat the Bellsprout for fun." Mars scratched her head.
"I don't doubt that." I chuckled.
"Enjoyed your last match down here?" I mused. She nodded happily.
"Yeah, it was fun! Aunt is probably gonna hog me now, but I'll cheer against you."
"Huh, weird. I never heard that while battling..." I trailed off knowingly. My twin immediately flushed.
"The crowd was booing pretty loudly for you. My voice was masked," she defended.
"Right..."
"Get that smug smirk off your face!"
"Ah, Trainer Gold! May we have a moment of your time?" Gold grinned easily.
"Sure thing! Ask away," he allowed easily. The anchor sighed in relief.
"Oh, thank goodness... we thought you would be like... never mind!" He cackled easily.
"No need to be afraid to say it! Silv is a bit different from the rest of us!" She laughed nervously.
"It's a little refreshing at the very least. He makes me think of new questions!" Gold clapped supportively.
"Good for you! Now go ahead and ask your questions! Oh, make sure you don't mention any pokemon I use... I want my gang to watch this interview." Lydia shot him a strange look but nodded all the same.
"Right! This is Anchorwoman Lydia here, and we're here to interview Trainer Gold! Now, if you remember, he's yet another member of the mysterious group, Colors! After a convincing victory of 3-0, we hope to learn more about this young man." Lydia turned towards him with a curious smile.
"I have to ask, how did you four meet? I still find the idea of a group of friends with matching eyes and names to be incredible!" Gold nodded in agreement.
"It is pretty cool!" He pondered the question with an easygoing expression.
"Well, Crys and I grew up together. We've known each other since we were in diapers! The two of us met Green and Silver just this year, and we hit it off like a house on fire!" he exclaimed.
"We've all got our strengths and weaknesses, but we mesh with each other to an awesome level! That's why we're so good!" Lydia nodded eagerly.
"Good is an understatement! All four of you have dominated your way through the competition so far! I can't help but notice you haven't revealed more than two of your pokemon. You've swept the preliminaries with just a single pokemon, while also only using one pokemon for this match!" Gold grinned cheekily. He had only used Ataro and Scytaro so far in his battles.
"Gotta keep my cards close! I'm not really sweating, so using more than that isn't necessary!"
"Such confidence! I can't help but notice all of you carry yourselves with such assurance!" He put up a peace sign.
"Top 8 is the minimum for all of us. As long as I don't face them, making it should be easy!"
"Oh my! Are you saying this tournament is going to be truly dominated by Colors?" Lydia wondered.
"Yup! One of us is gonna win this whole thing, so start investing in our era of dominance early! Colors is going to be a name that the whole world knows, so just know we're putting you on notice!" Lydia grinned from ear to ear, swept in by his effortless charisma.
"When you put it like that, it makes it difficult not to root for you! Best of luck in your future matches, Trainer Gold. We look forward to any future interviews!"
"Heh, sure thing! Just keep watching me win and think up some good questions! I'm no Silver, but lame questions are still lame!" She laughed.
"I'll do my best! I've been preparing myself for all of you!"
"That's the spirit! Keep it up, and I'll put in a good word for you to be one of our exclusive interviewers when we hit it big!" Gold cackled, leisurely walking away. Lydia watched him go with a small smile. They all had a different kind of charisma to them, one that led you to believe that any of them really could win this entire thing. As the camera shut, the woman shook her head.
"Quite the big head he has... though, I suppose being allowed to interview someone like their group freely will surely have its benefits in the future," she mused. She could sense when gold was struck, no pun intended, and Colors was that. Lydia was closely inspecting all their battles, and they showed a prowess beyond that of rookies. Investing in them didn't sound like a bad idea.
"You're one of that freak's friends." Crystal paused, slight confusion on her face as she turned to face the person who said that. She had just finished her Top 64 match, having won fairly easily against some girl named Giselle. While walking back to the dorm, she had heard a voice say that rather disturbing sentence. It took her little time to identify the person, and the moment she did, a frown formed.
"You're one of the trainers from New Island. Corey, right? You're my next opponent," she identified. Corey had a scowl on his face.
"That's right," he said shortly. Crystal's gaze immediately darkened.
"Just who do you think you're calling a freak?" she asked quietly. He snorted.
"Isn't it obvious? I have no idea how any of you kids could hug that little monster, but I'm here to tell you you're better off not even thinking about him." The oldest of Colors bristled. They harbored a grudge towards Silver? What was wrong with them?!
"He saved our lives. We'd be dead without him protecting us," she said stiffly.
"He's the reason we almost died in the first place! Don't act like he had nothing to do with that monster's transformation!" Corey retorted. Crystal practically shook in place as she remembered the horrible sound of Silver dry heaving, blood pouring down his nose as he shielded them from 8 catastrophic sources. As he collapsed onto the floor with a sickening thud, his body going limp as if he had just— The last thing anyone should be saying about Silver is that he was an issue.
Crystal refused to let anyone place the blame on their troubled friend. He had sacrificed almost 3 months of happiness just to save them! Sure, no one knew that... but that didn't mean she'd allow someone to talk so horribly about him. No one knew that without his interference, Kanto as a region would be done for... and the others would have quickly followed. But Crystal knew that, so she wouldn't let anyone stomp on his image just to sate their own ego. Even on New Island, he was doing everything to protect them.
It was these... these ungrateful pricks that made things worse for themselves!
"You don't get to blame Silver when it's your fault things went so badly! You couldn't even put a dent in any of those pokemon!" Crystal retorted, fury blazing in her eyes. Corey looked taken aback by that, outrage quickly replacing it.
"So what?! You only had 7 badges. You wouldn't have done any better," he spat. He shook his head violently.
"Whatever. I guess the friends of a freak are freaks too. I'll knock all of you out by myself if I have to," he swore. Crystal shuddered in place, eyes practically glowing in restrained fury.
"So you're my next opponent. Alright, I'll show you," she whispered.
"Did you hear? Crystal wants the next guy crushed," Totoree mused.
"She didn't look very happy. I do hope she's doing okay," Khanaree sighed, nursing baby Ruree.
"Someone talked about Silver in front of her," Misteree muttered. Airee the Dragonite exhaled.
"I suppose she'll be using either Totoree or me to accomplish that? We would deliver the most decisive defeat after all." Misteree shook her head.
"No... she wants to drive it home that he never stood a chance. Using the obvious powerhouses defeats that." Totoree snorted.
"Our gentle little trainer is baring her fangs? I'm not even upset that I won't be getting used yet then." Archeree barked excitedly.
"Ohhh, Crystal's mad! I feel bad for whoever did that." Eerie exhaled.
"That poor soul." They all nodded in agreement. This would be a quick battle.
"U-Unbelievable! In what might have been the most one-sided battle of the Top 32, Trainer Crystal has decimated Trainer Corey with a single pokemon! What a performance by our rookie!" Corey collapsed to his knees, shaking as piercing, unnatural eyes stared at him. Crystal's expressionless visage stared him down like he wasn't even worth her time. Like he was insignificant. Next to her, a Mismagius floated ominously... having been the one to annihilate all his pokemon.
The normally smiling pokemon stared hauntingly at him, eerily reminiscent of that monster of a trainer it had. None of them stood a chance against that powerhouse of a ghost... It hadn't even been the Dragonite or that ferocious Feraligatr he knew she had... No, just a single Mismagius. Not even the most difficult pokemon to deal with, but against Crystal, it felt almost impossible. He could still hear Bruteroot's screams of agony as the ghost amplified the burns on his body with a brutal Hex.
Pidgeot and Sandslash fell just as quickly. None of them even landed more than a glancing blow. It was humiliating, getting treated like a rookie by a rookie. Crystal walked up to him, expression chilly. She reached him quickly. What stung the most was just how easy she made the battle look. This freak of a rookie had dominated him at every turn, countering every plan he thought up as if she were there when he thought of them. Crystal stared him down, smiling gently.
"You did well for a 4th-year trainer! Don't be too discouraged, there's always next year!" she encouraged, grasping his limp hand and shaking it. Then she leaned in, eyes flashing with malice. Twin glaciers stared at him, no kindness to be seen from the most gentle of Colors.
"Don't you ever talk about my friend like that again, you waste of a bully. I would quit if I spent 4 years as a trainer only to lose to a rookie in such a humiliating fashion," she whispered so lowly, none but he could hear.
"I don't ever want to see you even breathing the same air as Silver again. That's the only warning I'm giving you, ungrateful prick." She humphed, turning on a dime and walking off. In a flash, a smile was on her face as she waved happily at the crowd. Crystal had quickly become a fan favorite through the tournament. It was hard not to cheer for the earnest and polite girl.
"What a great show of sportsmanship from Trainer Crystal! Even with such a victory, she's imparting insightful input to her opponent! The future is bright with such a kind young lady!" The announcer praised, getting the crowd to roar even louder. But to Corey, it just sounded as if they agreed with everything she said, even though they hadn't heard any of it. He trembled slightly before turning on a heel and dashing off. Tears of humiliation fell from his face all the while.
"Trainer Crystal, might we have a moment of your time?" Crystal paused at the interviewer, identifying her as the one who had gotten Silver to agree to one. After a moment of thought, she nodded.
"Of course! How can I help you?" she asked politely.
"We'd love to ask you a few questions, if you don't mind!" Lydia beamed. Crystal pondered it before quickly coming to a decision.
"Of course! I'd love to answer any question I could!" The interviewer nodded happily.
"Now, we just watched an incredible display from you against Trainer Corey. A decisive 3-0 in the Top 32 isn't something that happens very often... and it's even rarer that the one to do so is a Rookie to a Veteran! Tell me, what are you thinking right now? How does a rookie like yourself propel themselves to being the #3 trainer of the year?" Crystal smiled politely.
"Oh, I just have good friends who push me to want to improve myself! To be honest, I don't think I'd have been nearly as strong as I am now if not for the efforts Colors put into each other. As for what I'm thinking...
"I can't lose until I meet one of them... and then I'll beat them too," is probably what is pushing me," she replied easily. Lydia looked awed by her answer.
"I must ask, is that drive what has propelled you all to such levels?" she asked. Crystal nodded readily.
"We're all rivals... but before that, we're friends! We're not afraid to share tips and tricks to improve one another. Silver once said that only someone afraid of challenge would propel himself forward by keeping others in the dark. It's why he's not at all afraid to reveal things to us, because he's confident that he'll be able to win regardless of that." Granted, Silver had no interest in revealing things to anyone besides them...
but still, his excuse was that they'd be the only ones capable of challenging him anyway! She put a hand to her heart at that, smiling confidently.
"It fills me with so much excitement knowing that my rivals want me to be at my very best, just so they can cement their own victory in an even more decisive way. Even my ego wants to match that! I want them at their best too, so that when I win, it'll feel all the better." Lydia's eyes were wide at her admittance. Crystal herself was rather surprised by it... But she would not lie to herself and say that victory over Corey felt incredible.
It felt wonderful knowing that she crushed him so easily, and this boy who had talked so much would not hold a candle to her.
"Gold, Green, and Silver are both my rivals and my friends... so when I reach the peak as a trainer, they'll be right next to me. That's why we're Colors," Crystal finished.
"Yes, yes! You've said everything I want to hear! If people doubted it before, I think this interview will cement it! Colors is a name that many people will remember!" Lydia clapped eagerly, stars in her eyes.
"All distinct in their own way, but with equal levels of presence! Mind my unprofessionalism, but I feel giddy just imagining you all in the future!"
"Watch us! We'll shock the world! In a few years, everyone will know about Colors!" Crystal assured. I grunted as Crystal summarily pulled me into a hug. There was a sad frown on her face that prompted me to gaze at her in some concern.
"What's the hug for?" I murmured, easily returning it and tucking her in. She exhaled.
"My opponent just now was one of the trainers from New Island. He... didn't have nice things to say to you." My gaze narrowed at her whisper.
"Those douches? I told them off already, and they still had things to say about me?" I mused, eyes narrowed as my annoyance swiftly swelled. Crystal sighed.
"I told him off too... called him a waste of a bully after sweeping him." I looked surprised.
"You did that?" She nodded strongly at the confusion in my voice.
"No one has any idea what you had to go through. No one knows that you saved all of Kanto from a legend that could and would have killed us all. They have no idea the mental strain you were in... but that bully saw all you were trying to do. He saw you collapse like a—" Crystal cut herself off with a hiccup, prompting me to rub her back. By now, my expression was thunderous, but that could wait for later.
"Hey, it's okay. I'm still here," I soothed.
"How could they see you stop Mewtwo like that and still call you a freak? What's wrong with them? Don't they have any empathy?" Crystal asked quietly. I exhaled.
"It's kinda like what happened with Janine. I'm an easier target for their frustration. It's either me or the legendary that could kill them in a blink. But they don't matter... they're just randoms who got in the way." They probably spread some rumors about me. Combined with my interviews and my general popularity, that would explain some of the booing. How bad would it be if I weren't related to Lorelei? Crystal nodded readily.
"People like that... who deny reality to live in their delusions, I don't like them," she muttered.
"No one ever wants to acknowledge their fear. It's not easy to point out how helpless and afraid you are." Crystal stayed silent for a long moment.
"Were... were you afraid?" she asked quietly. I stared at her, expression inscrutable.
"... Yeah, I was terrified. Terrified of my father, terrified of what could happen to Lorelei and Green, terrified of never seeing you guys again... and terrified of the death march I took to stop Team Rocket and Mewtwo," I replied honestly. Crystal sniffed, fat tears forming in her eyes at my admittance. She hugged me tightly, ragged breaths coming out infrequently.
"I was terrified, too. You're one of my best friends... a core piece of our gang. You're not alone anymore, Silver... so don't be terrified of confiding in us. We'll always be there for you, and even if no one else notices, don't think I won't," she said earnestly. She was... Crystal was a good person.
"Thanks for defending me, Crys," I said honestly, squeezing her slightly.
"Of course! Even if no one knows the effort you put in, we'll always know," she assured. I smiled.
"And that's all that matters. I don't care about a person's opinions, unless it's the people I care about."
"Good... but that still doesn't make this right," she muttered. I tilted my head.
"Funnily enough, my opponent is one of those trainers too. The one named Fergus." Crystal frowned.
"He had problems, too?"
"Seems like it. They already messed up calling Mars a freak; now they're bothering my gang, too? Now they've done it," I muttered. Crystal exhaled.
"Don't do anything reckless, okay? Just crush them in battle. Wait for after the League at the very least," she said softly, placing both her hands on either of my shoulders. I stared at her, nodding my head thoughtfully.
"Alright, that was never in doubt anyway. I'm about to have that match right now," I told her. She smiled.
"You don't need luck, so just come back and tell me about the look on his face when you win." I chuckled.
"Since when did you become such a sadist, Crystal? Calling someone a waste of a bully, telling him off, then telling me to talk about the look on my opponent's face?" Crystal flushed slightly, rubbing her hair.
"You did this to me."
"It's a fair change. You guys are taming me, so I'm making you all more feral. A good balance."
"I hate that you genuinely think that's a fair trade."
"Welcome to the Top 32, everybody! Are you ready for another thrilling battle?!" I let out a quiet breath, eyes closed as I hummed a tune to myself. Across from me, glaring daggers, was that Ferguson guy. I stared dully at him, my silver eyes no doubt making him shifty. Distantly, I heard a voice screaming, "Kick his fucking teeth in, twin!" Gotta admit, I did love Mars.
"I'm going to make you learn the pecking order, Ferguson," I announced calmly. He clenched his fist tightly.
"My name is Fergus," he grit out.
"Don't bother. Winners write history while losers get forgotten." Veins formed on his face, a flush donning his face to stress his anger.
"Ouch! Trainer Silver sure doesn't hold back his words! He's got as much bite as a Feraligatr!" I smirked idly, watching as the referee beckoned for me to release first.
"Gaia," I decided easily, releasing her onto the field. Fergus' eyes immediately narrowed, and he grabbed a ball.
"Tentacruel, let's show this kid who's boss!" he barked. I smirked as the pokemon appeared.
"The contestants are set! Tentacruel vs Meganium! Begin!"
"Lemme guess, even if it's actually not Loki, you want to play it safe?" I guessed.
"Shut up! Tentacruel, use Rain Dance!" I snorted in amusement as it began pouring.
"Gaia, avoid using draining moves. There's a chance it has Liquid Ooze." Fergus twitched, surprise on his face. I hazarded that Liquid Ooze was exactly what it had, a good counter to the many draining grass types of Kanto. Gaia bellowed, immediately firing off a Magical Leaf despite me not ordering her to do so. She must have shot out dozens of thick leaves, all careening towards the Tentacruel with a single-minded focus. The difference between the move as a Bayleef and Meganium wasn't the amount, though.
It was the size. Each leaf looked dreadfully large, spinning through the air like a green pizza that only had the intent to cut your head off.
"Barrier!" Fergus shouted immediately. Tentacruel followed the order immediately, conjuring a shield which would protect it from the leaves... Or, well, attempt to. It shielded the first couple of leaves before the next wave caused cracks to appear. The third wave completely shattered the Barrier, allowing the final two waves to embed themselves in Tentacruel's body. It groaned at that, reeling back from the pain. Gaia immediately pushed her advantage with a firm scowl on her face.
"Grass Pledge," I murmured. Fergus grit his teeth as a column of leaves sent his Tentacruel flying up.
"Sludge Wave! Don't give it anywhere to run!" The jellyfish gurgled, its body battering on the ground. It pulled itself up and attempted to conjure a giant wave of sludge, only for the ground to shake harshly, shattering its concentration. Gaia glared at the Tentacruel, reeled back even further, and stamped down hard. The Earthquake worked devastatingly well, trashing the Tentacruel with no mercy.
The thing stayed up for a little too long because another column of leaves sent it flying into the sky, right before it collapsed onto the ground in a puddle.
"Tentacruel is unable to battle; the winner is Meganium!"
"Astounding! That's the Meganium we've been eagerly awaiting! Decisive and ruthless, much like her trainer, Gaia is a sight to behold!" the announcer shouted.
"Gaia! Gaia! Gaia!" the crowd chanted, even though they liked to boo me.
"That was a pretty impressive counter. You almost made Gaia sweat, but then we realized it was just the rain you're using," I praised, clapping politely. Gaia scoffed, turning her head in a superior manner. Fergus gritted his teeth.
"Nidoqueen! We've got this!"
"Look, Gaia! The water specialist confused a Nidoqueen for a water type because she's blue!" I gasped in awe. My eyes flashed maliciously as some of the crowd laughed at my joke. Fergus heard the laughter, and I delighted in how his face grew an even deeper shade of red. I saw this guy's performance at New Island. None of that random trio was anything impressive, and that's why they hated me. My team was the one that crushed them after all.
Part of me had felt slightly bad that they got dragged into that mess, but that didn't mean I'd allow anyone to throw their weight around for shit. Especially if you planned on involving others in it, and those others happened to be people I liked. If they had just directed their ire towards me, I'd accept it. I'd even agree with it. I did singlehandedly bring ruin to Kanto by using Mewtwo... but I didn't care about any of that if you had something to say to Mars or Crystal or anyone in my gang.
"The contestants are set! Meganium vs Nidoqueen! Begin!"
"Toxic Spikes!" Fergus spat. My eyes glinted.
"What's the point of doing that? In case you didn't realize, I'm about to sweep you," I taunted.
"Safeguard." A white barrier surrounded the area by Gaia. It looked faint, like it wouldn't even properly block an attack... but that wasn't its purpose. Gaia could keep Safeguard going for a decently long time, but once I swapped her out, its effects would start to peter ever so slightly. Not that I needed to do such a thing.
"Magical Leaf, Gaia," I instructed.
"Not so fast! Sludge Wave, Nidoqueen!" Nidoqueen roared, firing the wave of sludge that Tentacruel failed to summon. It absorbed and dissolved every Magical Leaf, saving her from the attack...
"Earthquake."... For now. Fergus snarled, expression somewhat difficult to see through all the rain.
"Show them a real Earthquake!" Gaia and Nidoqueen roared simultaneously, stamping the floor in unison. Even I could feel the ground shaking from the twin Earthquakes, the power behind both causing it to tremble harshly. I watched the shockwaves cancel each other out in the middle, undeterred by such a thing and moving onto my next course of action.
"Energy Ball." Gaia didn't miss a beat. To hesitate in battle was to lose pace. It was something I had enforced in her back in her days as a Chikorita. It helped that her opponent at almost all times was the always fast, never letting you think, Loki. As a result, hardly anything phased her. She summoned a ball of green energy, firing it off with expert precision. Fergus grit his teeth as the attack connected solidly.
"Sludge Bomb!"
"Light Screen," I retorted calmly. A pink barrier formed, making the barrage of sludge splash uselessly against it. Gaia looked wholly unimpressed with Nidoqueen's efforts, holding the Light Screen as easily as breathing.
"Magical Leaf again."
"Agh! Enough! Sludge Wave and then get close to use Ice Punch!" Fergus roared. I smiled as Nidoqueen followed the commands without hesitation. Some leaves got through this time, leaving cuts on her sturdy body, but the majority were destroyed by the giant wave of sludge once more. I'm not sure why he suddenly assumed Nidoqueen would lose in a distance battle against Gaia, but judging by the guy's temper, he was probably the type to have a melee preference.
Unfortunately for him, that was a ridiculously stupid idea against Gaia. Without even having to command it, an unhealthy amount of vines lunged forward. Her training with Erika's Tangrowth was showing because she definitely used more than necessary to capture the Nidoqueen. Nidoqueen tried to roar, only for the vines to wrap around her mouth slowly. Gaia had a superior expression, glaring at the poison type with a venom that matched mine.
"And Nidoqueen has been captured! What will she do now?!"
"I'm wondering the same thing!" I conversed casually with the announcer.
"Urgh! Nidoqueen, breathe through and fire off an Ice Beam!" Fergus shouted nervously. I smiled.
"Nah, I don't think so. Gaia, use Hydro Pump."
"WHAT?!" Fergus roared, jaw dropping even further as Gaia followed my order without hesitation. She took a deep breath, glowing white for a moment— before drawing from the rain, which made her outline turn blue. I heard the simultaneous gasp of the crowd as Gaia fired a torrent of pressurized water. It soared through the air, targeting the utterly immobilized Nidoqueen who could only watch with terrified eyes as my Meganium used a move it couldn't possibly learn. Heh, I should have Ares learn Hydro Pump.
That could be a good bonding moment for her and Freyja... Right? Yeah... Right as the Hydro Pump conjured from Nature Power connected, Gaia released the Nidoqueen. I know she only did that just so she could see the distance covered from the poison type flying backwards. My Meganium really was a sadist in battle. We both watched in matching satisfaction as Nidoqueen shot through the air like a projectile, landing on the floor and causing the puddle to splatter in every direction. It did not get back up.
"Nidoqueen is unable to battle! Meganium is the winner!" The referee announced.
"WOAHHH!"
"Unbelievable! This Meganium never fails to disappoint! Hydro Pump?! How could it even use such a move!"
"I guess she's more of a water type than the Nidoqueen you thought was one," I sighed despondently. Gaia puffed up at the loud cheering. Evidently, she was one of my most popular pokemon because I didn't hear a single boo. By now, Fergus was carefully replicating a tomato. Whether that be out of anger or embarrassment, I wasn't sure. Oh, who am I kidding? It was both in equal measures.
"Trainer Fergus, please release your final pokemon!" The referee announced. Fergus grit his teeth, grabbing his last ball.
"I choose you—""Gyarados," I finished confidently, watching the Sea Serpent appear from the ball. He faltered at my correct guess.
"Oh! Silver even predicts what his last pokemon will be! Does he have Trainer Fergus read like a book?!" I smiled.
"You want revenge against Freyja?" I questioned, looking him directly in his eyes. I saw it clear as day, the urge to get vengeance on the Milotic that had trashed him and his preferred pokemon...
"Well, too bad. You won't even get the satisfaction of going up against her," I drawled.
"I'LL SHOW YOU!" Fergus roared, finally losing all his composure. Gyarados roared, eyes pulsing with rage as its famous aggression was unleashed due to the sight of its trainer losing control.
"Both contestants are set! Meganium vs Gyarados... Begin!"
"Sunny Day," I smiled. The rain that slowly petered out was instantly replaced by the sun above. Gaia basked in it, sighing as her leaves ruffled slightly.
"That won't help you! Flamethrower, Gyarados!" Fergus roared.
"Match it," I muttered. If that hit her, it wouldn't be so good. Gaia's outline turned red, drawing from the sun this time instead of the rain. She immediately matched the Gyarados' Flamethrower with her own, instinctively shying away slightly from the flames. They collided with each other, cancelling out and getting Fergus to grit his teeth.
"Flamethrower too?! Unbelievable?! Is this truly a Meganium?!"
"Ice Beam!"
"That Gyarados is getting a little rowdy, Gaia. Calm it down." Gaia cried out in agreement. As Gyarados reared back to unleash the jagged beam of ice, it suddenly faltered. A pleasant aroma began saturating the field, enhanced by the sun above. The sweet scent, mixed with Gaia's natural aroma, felt like her actual ability. I never saw anyone utilize a Meganium's natural aura as much as they should; it felt like such a strong thing to leave underutilized. Sapping the will to battle out of a pokemon?
Did you have any idea how powerful that was, especially against a pokemon like Gyarados? I watched as it genuinely began pacifying the terror lizard of the sea of all things. The pokemon almost looked confused, a bewildered expression on its face.
"What are you doing, Gyarados?! ICE BEAM!" Fergus roared. Gyarados was a terrifying pokemon. Tough scales on a vein similar to dragons, a massive body, and a temper to match the power it was packed with. But when you're such a powerful pokemon, people obviously know about you. Gyarados eventually fired the Ice Beam, but it clashed with the Light Screen. Cracks appeared, but it held on strong, giving Gaia the freedom to charge her next move.
Three seeds flew through the air, latching onto the Gyarados and expanding like a parasite on its ludicrously long body. Gaia began restoring what little stamina she lost, puffing up as it drained from the incredible vitality that Gyarados wielded.
"Get your head in the game, Gyarados! C'mon! Use Fire Blast!" Fergus demanded desperately. I had an insufferable smirk on my face.
"Grass Whistle." Veins bulged all over my opponent's face. There was dread all over him, even as Gaia began whistling a gentle tune. Grass Whistle wasn't a move that could put a foe to sleep easily. It was just an easy move to resist, but Gaia and I had a perfect workaround by combining it with her Sweet Scent. Case in point, the already tranquil Gyarados closed its eyes, all aggression sapped out of it as the gentle song put it to sleep. Gaia sounded pretty beautiful. I bet she and Freyja were my best singers.
I hummed the same tune as her.
"Let's wrap this up, Gaia. Solar Beam." Thank you, Erika. She was a wonderful teacher, one whom I would slightly minimize my bullying of... maybe. Gaia's eyes glinted at my command. Her flower began glowing white, energy drawn in from every direction and stopping at her open mouth.
"WAKE UP, GYARADOS! MOVE!" Fergus roared. No luck. The sun enhanced the speed at which energy was accumulated to power up a Solar Beam. The white beam transformed green before Gaia unleashed the attack. I heard the air crack a bit before the Solar Beam mercilessly reached Gyarados. It was a thing of beauty, really, and I found myself surprised that I hadn't thought to teach Gaia Solar Beam before.
"It's a staple for Meganium's! I can't believe you haven't taught her Petal Dance or Blizzard either!" Erika had scolded me. Those could wait for later. I had more important moves to learn! The Solar Beam crashed into Gyarados to dreadful effect. The sheer power behind it made the water serpent roar, fury reignited as it snapped awake...
"Another one." Only for another Solar Beam to crash into it. Gaia had already charged one up on the off chance the sturdy evolution of Magikarp didn't faint. Ruthless? Yes. Effective? Double yes. I didn't leave things up to chance. Pragmatism was my standard in battles. I smiled in satisfaction as Gyarados collapsed to its side. Gyarados were difficult pokemon to deal with if they got going, so I'd just never let it get going. If you stop a snowball before it gets big, you'll face no threat of being run over by it.
"Gyarados is unable to battle, which means the winners of this match are Silver and Meganium!" Gaia preened under the intense praise of the crowd. There was a bright smile on her face, and she trotted around the field, showing off all the while. The crowd loved it. They cheered as loudly as possible for her.
"A convincing 3-0 by the rookie Silver! Shutout with no hopes of retaliation... Meganium decisively ended any chance of a comeback!" Fergus trembled in disbelief, watching numbly as Gaia bounded up to me with a happy smile.
"Nice attempt, Ferb. I'm sure in another few years, you'll make some other rookie's pokemon feel that," I praised, shooting him a sardonic grin.
"There is absolutely no love lost between these two! Fierce parting barbs from Silver!"
"You... you damned freak!" he howled. Gasps rang out in the arena at the harsh word, further exemplified by my shocked expression. My eyes went wide in disbelief, all while Gaia frantically patted me with her vines.
"Ouch! Seems like Fergus' temper flared!" the announcer shouted. I raked a hand awkwardly through my hair.
"Sorry, man, just a little banter on my end. No need to call me a freak," I mumbled. Fergus stepped back as the crowd immediately began booing.
"Banter makes it all the more fun! Don't stop!" A voice that sounded suspiciously like my twin roared. Ah, Mars was a little demon like me. I can't believe she caught on. Actually, never mind. She probably knew my reaction to his words was utter bullshit and decided to join in.
"That's alright, Silver! I thought it was pretty funny!" a deep male voice announced.
"Yeah, you're spicing up the League!" another male decided.
"Keep bantering! It makes it fun to boo!" a female cheered.
"No one else is doing it! Keep it up!" I gazed at the crowd before nodding my head.
"You got it. I'm enjoying this too," I assured. They roared as my confident smirk returned. Let it be known that I was a boogeyman all without Giratina. They should have left my crew alone, but people take too long to learn. They forced my hand, so that meant war. I just got out of a war with Team Rocket and Mewtwo. If you genuinely thought getting into one with me was smart, you weren't the sharpest tool in the shed. My gaze landed on the rattled Fergus, and he met my malicious gaze.
"Hey, Fergus, you gotta work on your temper, man. It might get you in trouble. Good match, I'd suggest thinking of proper strategies to counter a weak pokemon like Meganium," I said earnestly, returning Gaia and waving my hand at him. With that, I walked away, soaking in the defeated expression of Fergus like the monster I was. They should have kept their malice directed only towards me. The moment they involved Mars and Crystal...
the moment they made one of my gang members relive those memories before I talked to them, they started a war. I did not pity assholes who involved everyone in their ire. They should have just kept it to me. It still would have ended badly for them, but that would have only been between us. How unfortunate for them.
"Ah, Trainer Silver!" I groaned.
"You know the deal. Since I've qualified for Top 16, go ahead." Lydia beamed.
"We couldn't help but notice you were quite a bit more vocal this round compared to others? Would you like to elaborate?!" she asked immediately, slipping right into the interview. I pondered her words.
"I realized that to make the crowd really boo for me, I need to do my part as well. I can't just expect them all to watch my interviews where I'm asking for them to boo... I need to put in the effort as well. A relationship goes both ways," I said wisely. A bead of sweat formed on Lydia's head.
"Quite wise words from you... But I feel disturbed listening to them for some reason." I shrugged.
"Next question." She nodded quickly.
"Let's talk about the battle itself! A quick 3-0 fashion, where you only utilized a single pokemon! This was eerily reminiscent of Trainer Crystal's battle, who also happens to be part of your group—""Don't tell me about their battles. I don't wanna know about them," I interrupted easily, putting a single hand up. Lydia blinked in confusion.
"Right well... it's just we've never seen a group of Rookies perform like this! While one is believable, four incredibly talented individuals are completely stamping their names!" I tilted my head.
"I told you, didn't I? You'd find out the reason why we're the Top 4 Rookies. Any of us could have been #1, it just happened to be me." The anchorwoman smiled.
"Now, I couldn't help but notice both you and Trainer Gold seemed averse to hearing about the rest of Colors... could you give us a little insight as to why?" she asked tentatively, wincing backwards slightly.
"No strikes yet, you're good," I assured, thinking of the question.
"The other trainers in this League are just business," I admitted honestly.
"I'll show up, I'll scout them out... and I'll prepare in a manner that ensures I win." Lydia stepped back as a somewhat wild smirk made its way to my face.
"But battling my gang? That's different. That's something special... We don't wanna ruin a battle between us because one had better scouting from maybe a harder match." I reveled in the stunned look on her face.
"You mean to say... Colors are not scouting anyone in their group for the sole purpose of ensuring a fairer battle?" she asked hesitantly.
"Got it in one. We all agree that it'll be way more fun like this, so that's how we'll do it," I replied easily.
"... Oh my," was all she said. My smirk was back.
"You've gotten better with your questions... You learn quickly. What did you say your name was again?" I asked. She perked up.
"Oh, my name is Lydi—""Never mind... I just realized I don't care all that much. See ya when you inevitably bother me after Top 16," I waved, turning on a dime and walking off. Lydia watched Trainer Silver go with a stunned expression. Not only was he and his group utterly insane... he was incredibly rude to boot! But that was expected. Regardless... Lydia almost couldn't believe what she heard him say.
To her ears, it sounded like Colors were treating this entire thing like a warm-up that would eventually lead to the main event, which was their battling. It sounded like a bunch of kids were having a blast with one another. Was that the secret to their strength? She did not know... but she did know that these were the most entertaining interviews in a long time! Lydia was glad that she was seen as the most fit to interview Colors solely because of her efforts in getting one from Silver.
By the sounds of it, they were even getting used to her! Wonderful! At this rate, she might actually become one of their exclusive interviewers!
"So? Feel stupid yet?" I watched in mild amusement as Fergus jumped. There was a crushed look on his face, one that was replaced by a disturbed expression as he gazed at me.
"How... how did you get in here?" he spat.
"I let myself in," I drawled, leaning back and watching as he packed his bags.
"I warned you, didn't I, but some people just don't listen. Now you're known as a bully who was messing with a kid who's just having some fun," I taunted. Fergus trembled, rage flooding his eyes at my words.
"You know, I didn't actually have a problem with you guys, but you messed up dragging others into it. You should have left it between us... but you let ego get in your way." I smiled sardonically.
"You should be grateful I didn't include my aunt in this, and you should be glad one of the Freak's friends told him to go easy on you. I can and will ruin your life if you make another mistake like this... so consider this your warning." I stood up, patting the taller male on the shoulder as I pushed past him.
"I'm not someone you want to have as your enemy. You should be grateful I hardly register you as worth my time... so leave it like that, or a little loss in reputation will be the least of your worries."
"Have a good trip outta the Plateau, Ferb. Be sure to tell your friends about this conversation. I don't wanna hear anything you have to say. Just listen to my words and kindly fuck off." With that, I completely left. I didn't see the teen fall on his knees, defeat on his face. I genuinely didn't care enough, so there was nothing for me to soak in. All that mattered was that he understood the pecking order. Beyond that, he wasn't even on my radar.
"Hey, Joy."
"Sup, kiddo. Been watching your matches... so I bet you know why I'm calling," she greeted easily.
"You recognized my most recent opponent, yeah?" I questioned, watching the battle of my next opponent on the PC in my room.
"Got it in one. Considering how extra demonic you were, I take it they didn't appreciate you being there?" she questioned.
"Got it in one," I drawled, turning to look at her.
"I didn't really care when it was just me, but then they started talking to Crystal and my twin, too. I don't appreciate dragging others into it, so I took matters into my own hands to make sure they don't bother any of us."
"Little demon... but I get it. I'd ruin their lives too for being upset with you. No one knows better than I do what you had to go through. I'll never let anyone diminish your efforts." I smiled slightly.
"Thanks, Joy. After the League, I'll try to visit you. And don't think I don't know you're talking to Karen about me," I warned. She smirked insufferably.
"Someone needs to listen to me vent about a demon child who's been plaguing me for almost a year." I rolled my eyes.
"You'll have more to vent about soon. I already fought her, and you're next. Our history is supposed to stay between us." Joy let out a barking laugh at that.
"This is what I'm talking about."
"Shut the hell up," I interrupted before she could even think about saying something dumb.
"Keep it up. You're doing great so far... and when you visit, try to make it transparent. Wouldn't want you to see something you probably want to see—" I hung up on her, huffing in annoyance all the while. She really wasn't giving up on the I'm a pervert thing. Was it because of how aloof I was? Probably. Green loved getting reactions out of me because of that. Gold did too.
"What an impressive victory! With a solid win of 3-1, Trainer Ash Ketchum has defeated Trainer Ritchie and will advance to the Top 16." I let out a quiet breath at that, watching Ash celebrate with his Wartortle, who stood triumphantly over a Charmeleon. Across from him, some kid looked on in despair at the convincing victory.
"Would you look at that? He actually managed to meet me," I mused. Well, it didn't matter. The winner of this match would make it to the Top 8, and that was the barest of bare minimums for me. Losing at the Top 16 was unacceptable.
"I guess this counts as sibling bonding..." With that final mutter, I got to prepping. There would be no miracles. No surprises. I was going to crush my little brother without hope of a comeback... and I knew just how to do that. Next Battle, Top 16: Ash Ketchum vs Silver.
"Trainer Green! Trainer Green! May we have a moment of your time?" Green paused, turning curiously towards the woman.
"You're the one who's been interviewing my gang," she stated bluntly. Lydia nodded eagerly.
"Yes! I would love to get a few words out of you! As the #2 Rookie of the year, hearing from you would be lovely!" Green paused, taking a deep breath.
"Okay, I'll answer a couple of questions." Lydia looked pleased by that.
"Much like the rest of your crew, you've been bulldozing the competition! In fact, according to statistics, you have the fastest average matches! It's safe to say that all of you seem to be comfortably projected to make it to the Top 8, which is unprecedented. Never has a Top 8 featured at least 4 rookies! How does that make you feel?" Green tilted her head.
"Not enough." Lydia blinked.
"Pardon?"
"Making it to the Top 8 isn't enough. It's expected, so I'm not satisfied with that... I'm going to win this whole thing," Green said simply. The #2 Rookie stared at Lydia, green eyes glowing intensely.
"Prelims... 64, 32, 16, 8, 4... None of that matters. My gang and I expect nothing but winning, so that's what we're all aiming to do." Lydia couldn't help but take a step back as Green's gaze focused on her once more.
"I'll meet a member of my gang in the finals, and we'll have the most thrilling battle of the tournament... but I will win. That's my resolve, and I expect nothing less." With that, she turned and marched off. Lydia felt a bead of sweat drop.
"Such intensity... every member of Colors truly has that 'it' factor about them. It's difficult to doubt their words." Silver, Gold, Crystal, and Green... What a terrifying group of children. It felt like any of them could effortlessly sway the masses to their side. Colors truly was not an ordinary group. None of them seemed normal, from Gold's brash confidence to Silver's collected assurance... to Crystal's gentle, albeit excited faith in herself, and finally Green's intense conviction. Truly, what a strange gang.
This felt even rarer than one in a million.
"Something on your mind, Wes?" Rui asked curiously.
"..." Wes said nothing, gazing in contemplation at a photo.
"It's been a year since we stopped Team Snagem." Rui, used to his shorter sentences, nodded her head.
"We've been helping Orre get back on its feet the entire time... It's been good work!" She tilted her head, leaning closely to her best friend.
"What's on your mind, Wes? I know you by now... and you've been thinking for a few days now." Wes didn't show a reaction outwardly, beyond quirking a single brow. Rui placed both hands on her hips.
"Yes, Wes... it may come as a surprise, but as probably your only actual friend, I do know you pretty well. Now talk to me." The Hero of Orre finally sighed.
"I'm thinking of leaving Orre." Rui's brows shot up at the simple statement. Her eyes widened in surprise, and she let out an unintentional gasp.
"Why? While Orre is definitely recovering, you're still the strongest trainer in this region... it would definitely be a blow if we lost you." This was how their conversations tended to go. Rui could speak for the two of them for days because Wes was a man of few words.
"Orre is healing... and there are things I want to do," Wes said. Rui was only confused for a moment.
"Ho-Oh." Wes nodded.
"Wild pokemon are showing up in Orre. That's almost unheard of... It's the surest sign we're getting better. I can afford to leave them for a little." Rui frowned thoughtfully.
"Team Snagem is done for, and I don't think anyone will fill their shoes for a while. If they do come back, it won't be for years at least... and we'll be able to stop them again." She watched her best friend nod once more, this time a bit of hesitance following him.
"That's... not all. I want to track down my sister," he revealed.
"Sister?! You have a sister?!" Rui questioned in shock.
"Older. We used to both be part of Team Snagem, but she jumped ship first. Said she can't stand taking orders in her note," Wes replied easily, handing her the photo. Rui grabbed it, curiosity rolling off her in waves. There was a girl in the photo with the same silver hair as Wes, but with blue eyes instead of his golden-amber. They looked remarkably similar; same predatory eyes, lean, angular face that contributed to their unfairly good looks...
They even had the same grittiness, a look that spoke of a quiet and unreadable expression. Lone Absol. It was a word she used to describe Wes all the time. They had very similar vibes, so Rui could definitely see them being siblings... off just the picture alone.
"She left the Team similar to me. Stole an Airship and a plethora of gadgets and supplies, then fled. I followed soon after, but to stop them instead of going to another region," Wes explained. Umbreon crawled atop his lap, yawning and stretching.
"So you want to find her and Ho-Oh..." Rui trailed off, brows furrowed in contemplation.
"Right! Then where are we headed to first?!" she asked. Wes stared at her.
"We?" he repeated, not allowing the confusion to show on his face.
"Of course I'm coming with you! We're partners, Wes! Where are we headed?" the redhead asked adamantly. Her best friend scoffed, a small smirk on his handsome visage. He leaned back into his seat and began raking a hand against Umbreon.
"Ho-Oh has a lot of history with the Johto Region. I have no leads on where my sister could be, so we'll start with that." Rui couldn't help the pulse of excitement.
"I've never left Orre! This is exciting! Maybe we can try and improve relations between the other regions as well? While not quite on their level power-wise, I'm sure someone would be willing to hear us out." Wes shrugged.
"I doubt any region will be willing to help us. They never showed any concern before. Why would that change?"
"Because not everyone is as cynical as you! I'm sure we just have to talk to the right people! Johto, right? I heard Champion Lance is one of the fairest champions yet. He'll definitely hear us out!" she insisted.
"Whatever you say." She twitched at his dry tone.
"What's your sister's name anyway?" Rui asked curiously. Wes stared at the photo again before eventually pocketing it.
"... Jade. Her name is Jade."
"Lyra! We're going out soon~." Lyra's focus was glued on the television, a look of wonder on her face. Sitting in her lap, Marill watched the screen, equal levels of awe radiating off of her. The door banged open, something that caused Lyra to shriek in surprise. She whirled around and was met with the wild yellow eyes of Aunt Amber.
"Didn't ya hear your mom calling?" Amber asked, crossing her arms as she loomed over the little girl.
"Um... no?" Lyra replied, blinking in confusion. Amber barked out a laugh, the tall woman taking a look at what Lyra was watching.
"Hm? Y'know... we're going to Indigo right now, so you don't have to sit here and just watch the battle," she pointed out. Lyra's eyes widened in awe.
"Really?! Awesome!" she cheered, shooting up.
"You would have known if you listened to what your mother had to say," Marina chided, stepping into the room with a sad frown.
"Oh, the woes! One of my children has left Johto to avoid me, and the other won't even listen to what I have to say." The blue-haired woman placed a palm against her head, leaning back dramatically and falling into the amused Amber's arms.
"Amber, what is a woman to do without her children?! Should I begin capturing Skitty and Meowth? At least they won't leave me!" she cried.
"Look at what you did, Lyra. You got your mom in one of her moods," Amber chuckled.
"Sorry, sorry, Mom! I was distracted by the League!" Lyra soothed, beckoning towards the screen. Marina opened a single eye, taking a look at the screen. She immediately let out a wail of distress.
"Amber! Amber look! My little baby is looking at boys!" she cried.
"You're killing me, Marina," Amber exhaled. Lyra puffed out her cheeks.
"So what, I'm looking at a boy! You never say anything about Crystal and Gold! Stop treating me like a kid, mom!" she complained. Marina opened her mouth, only for Amber to immediately shut it for her.
"Your mother is just messing with you. If you have a crush, you have a crush," Amber said calmly, ignoring Marina licking her hand.
"I never said anything about a crush! Look! He has a Meganium!" Lyra huffed, thrusting a finger towards the screen. The two mothers gazed at the screen in curiosity. True to Lyra's words, a Meganium was on the screen, and it was putting on a clinic.
"Hey, wait a sec," Amber muttered, eyes narrowed. Marina gasped.
"Oh! Does my little Lyra have a crush on Crystal's friend?!" she asked. Lyra blinked.
"H-Huh?" she asked in confusion. Amber nodded.
"His name's Silver. He's part of your sister's crew. Gold says he's a grumpy fellow, but he's nice if you ignore it." Crystal's... friend. Lyra frowned, turning towards the screen with pursed lips. It wasn't a secret that her starter was going to be Chikorita, but the 12 year old would be lying if she said she didn't know how bad it's reputation was. Not many people liked the Chikorita line, claiming that there were plenty of better grass types. Lyra didn't like that the pokemon faced such scrutiny... it was rude!
If they didn't like Chikorita, then just leave it alone! No need to be so cruel about it... That's why she had been so glued to the TV! This Silver was the last person she'd ever expect to see with a Meganium of all things! They looked like complete opposites... but they fought like they were made for each other... Lyra's eyes turned into stars. A fellow Meganium lover! It was settled, Silver would be her teacher! Lyra would accept nothing else! She would meet Silver no matter what, Crystal's friend be damned!
With him guiding her... it was possible that she could actually win against her sister...
"Look at her! She's thinking about that boy! Oh, Amber, we must keep her away from him!" Amber exhaled as Marina let out a distressed cry.
"That's not very possible, Marina. He's friends with our children... very close friends. They're part of a gang."
"A GANG?!"
"You knew this already... You even approved." Amber simply tossed the shorter woman over her shoulder before slipping a finger into Lyra's suspender, lifting her as well.
"C'mon... we're gonna be late at this rate. We'll make it by Top 8 and then you can plot how to keep your daughter away from a boy who barely knows she exists," she grunted, dragging the two daydreaming idiots out of the room. Amber would have thanked someone that the idiot gene at least skipped Crystal, but it didn't skip her. It just missed and flew into Gold instead. I shuddered, instinctively looking behind me.
"... Did you feel that too?" Mars asked incredulously, head swivelling in every direction.
"... You felt that? The sensation of some psychopath you don't know latching onto you?" I asked in confusion. My twin opened and shut her mouth.
"Is that really what it is? Why do you have a description for it? What do I have to do with it?!" she practically shouted. I sat back, brows furrowed.
"That's what I think it is. It's the feeling I got when Cynthia, Gold, Mewtwo, and Zemya looked at me. It's happened a lot... people refuse to leave me alone. You might be collateral." Mars groaned before latching onto something.
"Who the FUCK is Zemya?!"
"Oh, right... lemme tell you about my Hoenn adventures."
"YOU WENT TO HOENN TOO?!"
"You're saying I shouldn't go to Kanto?"
"I wouldn't suggest it, no. Kanto looks like it's in a pretty rough spot based on what I'm hearing from friends." Paul frowned, crossing his arms.
"My plan was to travel through Kanto after Sinnoh," he said firmly.
"No plan goes perfectly smooth, Paul," Reggie chided.
"Something you know about, I imagine," Paul said scornfully. His older brother sighed.
"Regardless, I'd suggest going to another region. If you want to go to Kanto so badly, try traveling through Johto first and then head there." Paul scoffed.
"Whatever. I'll go to Johto then."
"Right. A good starting place is Newbark Town. Professor Elm's a helpful sort. Talk to you later." He grunted and hung the call up. Paul did not like it when his plans went awry. He had a set order that he wanted to follow, and Kanto had been the next region he planned on going to. But something had happened in Kanto. What exactly had happened to Kanto? Paul sucked his teeth ever so slightly.
"We'll be adjusting our plans. Johto is our next destination, instead of Kanto," he muttered, clearly displeased by the thought. Whatever. Brandon was not going anywhere. For now, he would try and find out exactly why Kanto was in such a disastrous state.
