Cade leaned back against the cool bark behind him, his body finally relaxing after what felt like an eternity of strain. Darkness wrapped around the hollow chamber beneath the Great Tree. The storm no longer screamed in his blood. The ache of hunger straining at every cell of his being was quiet for the first time since the Ashen Baptism. He exhaled slowly, flicking open his System screens with a thought, ready to finally go through the notifications he had pushed aside.
There were so many upgrades, so many titles, and— A sound cut through the dark. A crash. Then a croaking shriek that sounded awfully familiar. Cade's head snapped up. Another thump followed, this time heavier. He froze, listening intently, until the unmistakable crack of lightning lashed through the air from somewhere below.
"What the hell?" he muttered. The Stormsap Crucible wasn't active. He'd just purged its corruption—cleansed every bit of foreign script from its base. The lightning had stopped. So what was— His stomach dropped. The leech. He'd left it down below before he climbed up here. But it had been mostly dormant, sucking at the stalactite underneath the Great Tree like a bloated tick. Something must've roused it.
Another sharp, almost musical pop of energy echoed upward, followed by the unmistakable crackle of violet lightning discharging into open air. Cade pushed himself up and hurried toward the tunnel. He could review his gains later—his status screen wasn't going anywhere. Right now, he needed to see what was happening below. He reached the wooden rungs and began climbing down, moving quickly but carefully. As he descended, the sounds of battle grew louder.
Then, through the narrow view down the vertical tunnel, he saw it— The leech, massive and coiled, reared back, purple lightning threading across its grotesque hide. And something darting—fast and bright orange—just out of view. He narrowed his eyes. An orange blur. A small body. It whipped around just as the leech let loose a shrieking blast of violet energy.
"No…" he breathed. Pearl. She was down there. Fighting the leech. He pushed himself faster down the rungs, nearly slipping as adrenaline surged through his newly reforged limbs. He couldn't stay up here while she fought that thing alone. She had protected him more than once on the way to the Great Tree—now it was his turn. Then her voice echoed up through the tunnel." Cade—!" He froze for the briefest instant. She had spoken, not just chirps or grunts, and he had somehow understood her.
There was no time to wonder how. She needed help. He was almost at the bottom now. Through the opening below, he caught a glimpse of the leech lumbering forward, its maw beginning to glow again, another beam forming. It slithered toward something. Toward— His shell. She's hiding under the shell, he realized. Smart. The same shell had shielded him from the storm's wrath before she had found him.
It had shrugged off the storm's lightning, it would have no issue with whatever the leech could throw at it. Pearl had no way of knowing that, but still, she'd chosen well. Cade didn't wait. He pushed off the last few rungs and launched himself down into the hollow, angling his body between the leech and the shell. He hit the ground hard, but exactly where he wanted. The impact thudded through his legs, but thanks to his newly enhanced body, he stayed upright.
The leech snapped its head toward him, shrieked, and unleashed its blast of violet lightning— Right at Cade's chest. He didn't flinch. The violet lightning surged from the leech's maw in a blazing arc, lashing toward Cade like a whip forged from pure hatred. It struck him square in the chest. Cade didn't know what he had expected to happen but he certainly didn't expect it to tickle. It actually tickled. The energy skated across his skin in feather-light pulses, barely stronger than static electricity.
It was laughably ineffective. So much so that Cade actually let out a startled chuckle, and before he could stop himself, the laugh deepened into something fuller, incredulous, and entirely amused.
"You've got to be kidding me," he said between breaths, grinning. The blast of lightning continued for another few seconds before sputtering out. The leech hissed, its bulbous form rippling as it reared back to charge again. Cade shook his head slowly, wiping tears from his eyes with the back of his hand and taking a single step forward.
"This is what I ran from a few hours ago?" he asked, laughing under his breath. The leech coiled again, then released another beam of violet energy. Cade didn't dodge. He lifted a hand casually, letting the lightning wash over his palm. As the arc touched his skin, Cade willed the lightning inward. It responded instantly. Violet energy crackled down his arm, harmonizing with the refined channels in his body. He inhaled deeply as the leech's lightning was drawn in.
There was still a lingering will embedded in the energy—an echo of the leech's desire to destroy. But it was weak. Cade's own will crushed it like a twig. The flow slowed, then stopped. Cade exhaled through his nose, almost disappointed.
"That's it?" He kind of hoped for a challenge. After the Stormsap Crucible, after the soul-wracking pressure of the violet storm dragon's will, this felt pathetic by comparison. He flexed his fingers. There wasn't even a tinge of strain. Not even the whisper of resistance. He ignored the leech for a moment and looked back toward the shell. Pearl was still hidden. He couldn't see her, but somehow he could feel her presence now. She had saved him before. Time to return the favor.
Cade looked back at the leech and launched forward. The leech flinched, clearly sensing something had shifted. But it was too slow. Cade reached out and grabbed for it—not with a punch or a blast of energy, just raw strength. His fingers sank deep into its slick flesh, the membrane parting like rotten fruit. He gagged. Oh god that's disgusting. Violet ichor and blood sprayed outward. The texture was wrong. Slippery and lumpy at the same time.
With a grimace of revulsion, Cade reached in with the other and locked his grip. Somewhere in the back of his mind, a distant memory surfaced—being a kid, clutching a battered controller, eyes wide as a violent old fighting game played out on the screen. Mortal warriors in brutal tournaments. Finishing moves that defied biology and physics. Back then, he wondered what it would feel like to try one of those ridiculous moves in real life. Now was his chance and without thinking it through fully, he pulled.

The leech's body tore apart with a sickening rip, shrieking as it split down the middle in an explosive spray of gore and violet muck. Reality was a lot messier, a lot more disgusting, than the games ever made it seem. Gooey entrails spilled in every direction, coating Cade in steaming gore. He staggered back, holding the two ragged halves of the leech, now limp and twitching. Ding!
You have defeated [Lightning-Gorged Corrupted Swamp Leech – Level 11]. You have gained additional experience for killing a creature above your level. Dungeon Quest Updated: Cleanse Cynthia's Legacy Progress: Minor Corruption Cleansed: 7 / 100 Cade blinked at the notification through a haze of dripping slime.
"Gross," he muttered.
"It was way cooler in games. No smell. No... bits coating your skin. The System didn't even say FINISH HIM. Definitely not doing that again." He dropped the halves of the leech to the ground with a wet slap and shook his hands out, spraying flecks of goo across the roots. Then he turned toward the shell and scanned the area for any more threats but he found nothing. Just the stillness of the hollow beneath the Great Tree.
"Alright," he muttered.
"Time to check on Pearl." He approached the shell cautiously, stepping over the leech's remains. The curved opening was just large enough to glimpse movement inside. He crouched, wiping his face clear of slime, and leaned toward the opening.
"Hey Pearl" he said gently.
"It's safe now. You can come out." There was silence for a moment. Then, two bright orange eyes peeked out at him, wide and wary. Pearl stared at him in stunned silence. And Cade stared back, utterly relieved she was okay. He stepped back from the shell and lifted both hands, palms out, trying to look as non-threatening as a slime-covered human possibly could.
"It's dead," he said, keeping his voice calm.
"You're safe now." For a long moment, nothing happened. Then Pearl's eyes shifted, darting past him to the torn remains of the leech. Her throat worked as she swallowed. Slowly, cautiously, she crept out from beneath the shell, keeping low as if expecting another attack at any moment. When she finally stood, her orange skin was pale around the edges, her breathing shallow. She looked from the leech to Cade… then back again. Her gaze narrowed.
"…How can I understand you?" she asked, voice quiet and edged with disbelief.
"And who are you?" Cade blinked.
"What? It's me. Cade. It's only been like a day since we got separated" Pearl tilted her head, studying him more closely now. Her eyes traced his posture, the way he stood so easily beneath the Great Tree, the faint glow of lightning still threading through his skin. She stared at his face, searching for something familiar. Slowly, her eyes widened.
"…Cade?" she said again, uncertain. He grimaced and glanced down at himself.
"Okay, I'll admit I probably look a little different." Pearl took a hesitant step closer. Then another. She circled him, eyes sharp, noting the way his movements flowed without strain, how the air itself seemed to settle around him.
"When a human forms their core," she said to herself, "their presence changes. Their song deepens." Cade scratched the back of his head.
"Yeah… I didn't form a core." Pearl stopped dead.
"You… didn't?" she repeated.
"Then what happened to you?" She looked genuinely rattled now.
"No core," Cade confirmed.
"Not yet, anyway. I just… reforged my body." Her eyes flicked up to the Great Tree, then back to him.
"That's not possible."
"Well," Cade said with an awkward shrug, "I dunno what to tell you. That's what happened" He walked over to the pool at the center of the hollow and crouched, plunging his arms into the water. Gooey violet residue hissed faintly as it washed away. He winced as he scrubbed off the stubborn gore.
"After we got separated," he began, "the giant leech chased me but I ended up losing it in the maze. Eventually I got through the maze only for that same giant leech to follow me here. Thankfully the leech was more interested in that stalactite up there than eating me. I climbed up and found a hollow in the tree where it generates lightning… things kind of escalated from there." Pearl listened in stunned silence as he spoke about the crucible.
About absorbing the lightning it produced, about the hunger he had felt and the pain he had gone through. About the violet lightning trying to overwrite him. About the battle that took place entirely inside his soul. When he finished, he splashed water on his face and leaned back. Pearl stared at him like she was seeing a ghost.
"The songs…" she murmured.
"They never spoke of a chamber within the Great Tree. Or of reshaping the body with lightning." She shook her head slowly.
"What you've done has never happened. Not once. Not in all the trials of my people." Cade laughed quietly, embarrassed.
"Yeah, I didn't exactly plan it. I just listened to my body and did what felt… necessary… I guess." She looked at him again, more carefully this time. After a moment, Cade cleared his throat.
"So… how did you do in the maze?" Pearl stiffened.
"It was… challenging," she said, then glanced away.
"The voices tried to mislead me, but I endured. I completed the trial in a little over a week." Cade's eyes widened.
"A week? Wait— a week?" She blinked.
"Yes." He rubbed his face, incredulous.
"Fuck, I completely lost track of time. Wait, that doesn't make sense, I'm not even hungry or thirsty or even tired. Are you sure it's been a week?"
"Sorry," he added quickly.
"Go on." Pearl huffed softly.
"It isn't important. I finished the maze and came here to find that thing draining the storm root." Her eyes darkened.
"That abomination was feeding from the Great Tree itself." She glanced upward.
"But now the storm root is silent. Why is there no lightning?" Cade froze.
"Oh. Right," he said slowly.
"I may have left some things out." He took a breath and explained about the corruption—careful with his words, omitting the broader truth about Cynthia's Legacy being a dungeon. He wasn't sure how she would react to knowing her realm was a dungeon in the System's Tutorial. When he finished, Pearl was quiet for a long time. Then she looked up at the Great Tree, worry etched deep into her expression. Pearl's gaze stayed fixed on the thick, twisted stalactite that she called a storm root above.
Its bark was no longer glowing, no longer crackling with lightning. It just hung there, still and silent.
"Do you think," she asked quietly, "it will come back? The lightning, I mean." Cade followed her eyes upward, his own brow furrowing.
"I don't know," he admitted.
"I don't see why it wouldn't—unless I screwed something up." He grimaced and scratched the back of his head again.
"I don't think I did. I mean, I made sure every last piece of corruption was purged and that the channels were back to normal. It should be healing. Probably just needs time." Pearl let out a long breath, not quite a sigh.
"It should have returned already. The storm root is supposed to release lightning in regular intervals. That's how the Stormcallers complete their trial—by calling down the lightning and grounding it into the soil to bless the land." Her voice was taut with restrained tension.
"Right." Cade scratched again, wincing slightly.
"Well… maybe it's just taking a little longer to recover. There was a lot of corruption. Like, a whole 'dragon of domination trying to overwrite my soul' level of a lot." She didn't respond. After a long moment, Pearl stepped away from him and walked over to one of the root-pillars near the chamber's edge. She lowered herself into a seated position, folding her legs into a meditative posture, her hands resting lightly on her knees. Her eyes drifted shut. Cade stared at her for a beat, then shrugged.
"Cool. Yeah. Just go do your own thing. I'm totally not stressed about whether I just broke your sacred lightning tree." He let out a shaky breath and turned away, allowing himself to slump down on the cool ground at the edge of the pool. His limbs felt heavy, his muscles still hummed with energy. But beneath it all, there was an unshakable calm. For the first time since the Ashen Baptism the hunger that had gnawed at every cell of his body was gone. No ache in his bones or burning void demanding more. Right.
If we're just going to sit here and wait, I may as well check my status to see what all changed. With a flick of his will, Cade called up his status screen for the first time in what now felt like weeks. There's got to be a better way to display this, he thought. I want to see my base stats and my stats with my percentage modifiers. Not just one number that represents the total. The screen in his mind flickered for a brief moment—then shifted, the numbers reorganizing themselves as if responding to his request.
It now displayed his base stats first, followed by the modified totals in parentheses. It was a bit messier, but he liked seeing the difference his growing list of percentage Titles made.
