Steve nodded at the receptionist as he walked in.
"Don't tell me," she said, shaking her head.
"Okay, I won't," he said, sitting down on the sofa and picking up the latest issue of Goblin Monthly. It was either this rag or Falotopia Now! And he didn't think he could stomach the fluff.
"It might be a few, he's got someone in there," she said, shaking her head.
"Did you even try, Steve?" she snickered.
"If you must know, for the kind of money they were offering me to take the position, I thought I would be able to handle anything he threw at me. Nope, turns out I do have morals," he laughed.
"Glad someone around here does." She quickly stopped talking as the door opened and Mr. Applebalm escorted Tuthmosis out.
"I hope you have better luck this time, Tut. I give you credit for sticking it out as long as you did. I put in a little bonus for you for really going above and beyond. I know it wasn't easy," he said, clapping him on the shoulder before shaking his hand. He turned quickly, seeing Steve out of the corner of his eye.
"Already?" he asked, not surprised.
"Well I think that's a new record. Quit or fired?" he asked matter-of-factly. This content has been misappropriated from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
"A little of both, I guess," Steve answered as he stood up. He looked at Tut.
"Looks like I owe you," he said, pulling out his wallet.
"Hey, you realize you guys are here in GR and I am the director, right? None of that in here or you will get us all fired." He snickered, shaking his head.
"I get it, hell, I think I lost on my bet too, you just can't be doing that out here in the open like that."
"I'll catch you at lunch, you buy and we'll call it square, okay?" Tut said, half laughing.
"Sure, why not," he answered, shoving his wallet back in his pocket.
"How's the new position?"
"Man, Elios is great, I love it. It's so nice to go to work and you know, actually do your job," Tut smiled.
"I don't go home and have to take a bottle of antacids to make it through the night."
"Well, you're a better man than I, Tut," Steve said, shaking his head.
"I couldn't even make it to lunch with that man!"
"Well hang in there, I am sure something better will come along," Tut said as he looked at the clock.
"Speaking of better jobs, I need to get off to mine," he turned before reaching the door.
"Lunch? Where?" he asked.
"You pick, you won the bet," Steve said.
"Okay then… Gantry's at one?" Tut asked.
"I'm outta work here, dude, and you pick Gantry's? Come on, what kind of friend are you? I was thinking more like McJunky's but whatever," he said, shooting Tut a solemn glance. Tut raised his eyebrows at him.
"McJunky's? Ah, hard pass there, buddy, can't even look at McJunky's without wanting to throw up."
"I was just messing with you. Gantry's at one. See you then."
