ONE HEIR MUST REMAIN. The judgment hung above the open eye. No one moved. Kael listened to Maera cut the last ruined thread from his side. The physician's scissors made a small, careful sound. It seemed indecently ordinary beneath a sentence that might measure the rest of someone's life. Dalen found his voice first.
"Define remain." The seventh witness looked down at him. DEPARTURE WITHHELD. STANDING BOUND TO FIRST TESTIMONY. BURDEN ENDS WHEN TESTIMONY IS ANSWERED.
"When will that be?" Lysara asked. TIME UNMEASURED. The coffin speaker gave a quiet laugh. It held no humor.
"Sixteen years have not been sufficient." Dalen's golden branches strained beneath the stage. One ended in Kael's spilled blood. The other passed through the stone below Dalen's knee, bright enough to show the bones of his useless leg. The archive vessel watched both.
"The first claimant bears the first burden," it said.
"Kael Veyr holds the Witness Key. His blood opened the court. Let him remain." Lysara's hand tightened on Kael's shoulder. The copper filament through his left palm pulled warm blood toward the open eye. FIRST CLAIMANT IDENTIFIED. KEY-BEARER IDENTIFIED. Kael raised his head.
"Convenient." NO CHALLENGE HEARD FROM FIRST CLAIMANT.
"I was commenting on the quality of the theft." STATEMENT IRRELEVANT.
"Then we agree on its quality." Maera pushed him flat.
"If you spend one more breath irritating the architecture, I will charge you for it."
"Put it on the court's account."
"It appears overdrawn." Across the arena, Dalen drove his sword into the stone and used it to stand.
"No." The word came out raw. The archive vessel turned Kael's borrowed face toward him. Dalen stared at the judgment.
"I invoked the second claim. The branches answered me. If one of us must stay, take the heir who can still stand." OFFER OF SUBSTITUTION RECORDED. Kael looked at him. Dalen refused to return the look. For a moment, Kael saw the boy who had spent years accepting every victory the house placed beneath his feet. Then the golden branch in Dalen's leg twisted, and ambition returned to his face with the pain. The court wrote again. SECOND HEIR HOLDS ACTIVE CLAIM. ASCENT HELD AS COLLATERAL.
ONE BURDEN MAY NOT SECURE TWO CLAIMS. RELEASE REQUIRED BEFORE SUBSTITUTION. Dalen went still. The archive vessel smiled.
"Withdraw the claim that exposed Moonspire's choice. Surrender the ascent you purchased with it. Then the court may accept you." The fourth gate beneath Dalen's ribs gave one hollow pulse. Dalen looked toward Orwen. The examiner stood with the sixth witness line buried in his split shadow. For once, he did not offer a polished answer.
"If he withdraws," Othran said, "Moonspire can restore the examination." The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation. Orwen's gaze remained on the golden branches.
"No." The clan master turned.
"You came here to choose an heir."
"I came here under an order that treated both heirs as specimens." Orwen's mouth tightened.
"Whatever ascent Dalen believed he earned was never mine to guarantee." The admission struck harder than an insult. MOONSPIRE ASCENT NOT GUARANTEED. COLLATERAL RETAINS VALUE AS CLAIMED FUTURE. Dalen laughed once. The sound had an edge sharp enough to cut the last shape from his pride.
"So I surrender something they never intended to give me."
"Most sect bargains improve when described accurately," Vaelthar murmured in Kael's mind.
"You sound disappointed."
"I dislike seeing fraud performed without elegance." He could remain and lose Moonspire. Or keep the future he had wanted and leave Kael beneath the arena. It was not a choice designed to discover virtue. It was designed to make virtue expensive. Dalen's grip whitened around his sword.
"How long do I have?" ELECTION PENDING. PRESSURE INCREASES WITH DELAY. The golden branches tightened. Kael felt the one in his blood drag against the wound Maera had just closed.
"Do not withdraw it yet," Kael said. Dalen's head snapped toward him.
"You are objecting to being spared?"
"I am objecting to following instructions from something wearing my face."
"I was not asking your permission."
"Good. I am temporarily unqualified to give it." She swore and pressed both hands to his side.
"Release it." BURDEN REQUIRES ELECTION.
"He is not capable of electing anything," Maera said. The seventh witness faced her. PHYSICIAN TESTIMONY CONTINUES. She understood before Kael had to ask. Maera put two bloodied fingers against his throat. She examined his eyes, the tremor in his right hand, and the gray skin around the copper in his left.
"Kael Veyr has lost enough blood to impair judgment. His body remains dangerously cold. He has suffered repeated loss of consciousness, and the pain in his hand alone would invalidate consent under any medical oath worth speaking." The archive vessel's shelves rustled.
"Consent is not required for inherited burden." Maera looked at it.
"Then stop calling it an election." The open eye narrowed. FIRST HEIR CAPACITY IMPAIRED. VOLUNTARY ELECTION UNAVAILABLE. DEFAULT ORDER REQUIRED. The vessel lifted Aric's page.
"First claimant. First burden." SOURCE ASSERTED. Kael let his head fall back into Lysara's hand. Her fingers were cold now. Not as cold as his.
"You knew it would do this," she whispered.
"I suspected it disliked physicians less than claimants."
"And if Maera had refused?"
"She has never refused an opportunity to tell powerful things they are medically incompetent." Maera did not look away from the court.
"Accurate testimony remains testimony." Lysara's mouth almost curved. Then the branch pulled again, and Kael's vision darkened at the edges. The archive vessel stepped as far as the stone around its feet permitted.
"The default is established. Complete the collection." DEFAULT ORDER UNVERIFIED.
"The page carries Aric Veyr's blood." RECORD PRESENT. PROVENANCE PARTIAL. The vessel's smile thinned.
"The first claimant cannot challenge it." Kael closed his eyes. That was the mistake. It still believed opposition belonged to him.
"Lysara," he said. NO CHALLENGE HEARD.
"I know. She has better manners." Lysara looked down at him. He moved his eyes toward the white stain at the corner of the archive vessel's mouth. Understanding passed between them. Years ago, before the broken engagement and the ash pit and all the truths they had learned too late, Lysara had been the only person at House Veyr who could tell when Kael intended to lose a game on purpose. He had never discovered what gave him away. Now she found the hidden move without a board. She turned to the seventh witness.
"I give testimony." The line around her ankle brightened. SUMMONED WITNESS HEARD.
"The third claimant altered the record after Ilara Sorn's countermand was admitted. It tore a strip from Aric Veyr's page and pressed the fragment into its mouth before stating the burden claim." The vessel jerked against its stone restraint.
"The visible lines remain sufficient."
"That is argument," Lysara said.
"My testimony is that it removed part of the document it now calls complete." DOCUMENT ALTERATION OBSERVED. WITHHELD TEXT MATERIAL TO CLAIM. PRODUCE THE RECORD. White shelves opened inside the vessel's shadow. It forced them shut.
"A witness cannot challenge a claimant amendment." Lysara's expression remained perfectly courteous.
"I did not challenge you." She glanced at Kael.
"I noticed you." For the first time since entering the treatment recess, Kael smiled. The court did not. WITNESS DISPUTE IS NOT CLAIMANT CHALLENGE. PRODUCE THE RECORD. The seventh witness raised one dead finger. The archive vessel's borrowed jaw opened. Something pale moved behind its teeth. The missing strip slid out slowly, not wet with saliva but covered in tiny crossed-out names. Each name vanished as the fragment entered the court's light. Aric's blood darkened the vellum.
The strip joined the torn edge of his page. Words appeared beneath the petition. IF MY BLOOD DIVIDES, LET NO HEIR NAME ANOTHER TO THE DEBT. THE WITNESS HELD IN PLACE RETAINS ELECTION. The arena became silent enough for Kael to hear Dalen's breath catch. DEFAULT ORDER CONTRADICTED. WITHHOLDING ESTABLISHED. THIRD CLAIMANT CREDIBILITY DIMINISHED. The stone climbed from the vessel's ankles to its knees. Its shelves screamed without sound. Kael looked at the borrowed face and said nothing. He did not need to.
The sealed speaker beneath the coffin lid spoke.
"Aric added that clause after the court accepted my standing." AUTHORSHIP SUPPORTED BY PRESENT WITNESS. ELECTION BELONGS TO WITNESS HELD. The two golden branches turned. Not toward the archive vessel. Toward the coffin. The gray hand beneath the lid closed into a fist. Dalen looked at it as if it held a blade.
"Choose me." Kael's eyes opened. Dalen finally met them.
"Do not misunderstand," he said.
"I am not giving you the house."
"I would hate to interrupt your generosity."
"If I remain, my claim is heard here. If you remain, you will die before the court discovers what it buried."
"A stirring concern for the truth."
"I am concerned for what happens when you are left alone with it." Kael considered him.
"Better." The coffin witness did not answer. ELECTION REQUIRED.
"I choose neither," the speaker said. ELECTION REQUIRED.
"Then the testimony must hear why I cannot choose." RELEVANCE REQUIRED. The gray hand gripped the edge of the coffin.
"One heir carries Aric Veyr's blood by birth. The other carries it by judgment." Kael felt the Cinder Seal go utterly still. Dalen's two branches shuddered. Othran rose from the clan master's seat.
"Both are Veyr." The coffin speaker did not answer him. Orwen's split shadow folded close to his feet, as though it recognized a danger before the man casting it did. The seventh witness leaned forward. BIAS MATERIAL TO ELECTION. IDENTITY SEAL PARTIALLY LIFTED. The coffin lid rose. Not an inch this time. A full handspan. Darkness poured from within, followed by the scent of cedar, old iron, and something Kael remembered from a childhood room he had never been allowed to enter. No face emerged.
Only a shoulder wrapped in rotted gray cloth and a length of black hair threaded with white. The speaker drew a breath.
"Before I choose which of Aric's heirs the court keeps," the hidden witness said, "you will hear what House Veyr did to make one of them."
