WHO SENT THE FIRST CLAIMANT BELOW? The question hung above Clan Master Othran in letters of white stone. He did not look at Kael. That was answer enough for the boy on the treatment cloth. It was not enough for the court. TESTIMONY REQUIRED. Othran descended the remaining steps from the clan platform. He stopped beside his broad sword, but did not pick it up.
"I authorized the assignment." The arena breathed in. Kael felt Lysara's hand tighten beneath his head. Maera's fingers remained at his throat, counting a pulse that had already disappointed several authorities that night. Miren's gray hand gripped the coffin lid. Dalen stood between his mother and the clan master, one golden branch clean in his blood and the other blackening where it emerged from his sealed Fourth Gate.
"Authorized what?" he asked. Othran faced the open eye beneath the stage.
"A service trial for Kael Veyr. Recovery of a black mineral shard from the lower mine works. Successful return would have restored his right to petition for clan resources." Kael managed a laugh. It hurt enough that Maera immediately pressed two fingers against his lips.
"Do not."
"I was appreciating the generosity."
"Appreciate it silently." The court wrote above Othran. ASSIGNMENT AUTHORIZED. PURPOSE INCOMPLETE. Othran's jaw tightened.
"The council needed to determine whether he could still carry field duty." Miren pushed herself higher from the coffin.
"You chose the Ashen Depths to measure a crippled child's usefulness?"
"He was sixteen."
"An ancient age," Vaelthar observed.
"At sixteen, I had already destroyed my first kingdom." Kael closed his eyes.
"You are not helping." Lysara glanced down.
"Neither are you."
"It claims adolescence as a defense."
"For you?"
"For itself." Vaelthar went quiet with the offended dignity of something that had probably destroyed the kingdom by accident. The seventh witness raised one dead finger. LIKELIHOOD OF RETURN KNOWN? Othran did not answer at once. The stone beneath his feet climbed over the edges of his boots.
"Known?" he said.
"No." REFUSAL RECORDED. PRESSURE INCREASES. The stone reached his ankles. Othran looked at Kael then. There was no apology in his face. Kael almost respected that. An apology offered only after a buried court began eating one's feet was merely another method of standing.
"The healers believed you would not survive an ordinary winter," Othran said.
"The third descent had not been worked in twenty-three years. Two previous survey teams failed to return." Murmurs broke across the benches. Kael watched Othran's eyes.
"And if I died," he said, "the succession problem ended." Maera removed her fingers from his mouth only to point them at his chest.
"A question. No argument."
"I am too weak to argue." DENIAL RECORDED. CREDIBILITY INSUFFICIENT. Lysara's mouth twitched despite herself. Othran looked up at the court's judgment.
"Yes," he said.
"If Kael died in lawful service, the house could recognize Dalen without further division." The black edge in Dalen's second branch spread another finger's width. Othran continued before anyone could speak.
"I told myself survival would prove the healers wrong. I told myself death would settle a dangerous uncertainty. The truth is that I accepted either result because both preserved House Veyr." The stone stopped climbing. TESTIMONY AGAINST INTEREST ACCEPTED. If you discover this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation. DEATH FORESEEN. DEATH NOT EXPRESSLY ORDERED. HOUSE STABILITY VALUED ABOVE CLAIMANT LIFE. Kael read the words twice. The Cinder Seal wanted anger.
It opened beneath his heart like an eye sensing daylight through a grave. He guided the first thread of heat down. Not into his blood. Not into the copper through his palm. Down to the ruined core gate, around once, then apart with the next breath. The heat vanished. It did not warm him. Control was not mercy. Vaelthar noticed.
"You have become very skilled at refusing useful violence."
"Practice." Dalen moved toward Othran.
"You accepted either result."
"I did."
"But you did not choose the third descent." Othran's gaze shifted. Marrek had been silent since the black wax opened. The elder knelt near the edge of the stage with Serit's cord around his wrists and the pieces of his broken bronze seal on the stone before him. He looked older without authority. Smaller, too. The court turned. EXACT ROUTE REQUIRED. Marrek lifted his bound hands.
"I selected the route." Miren's stare sharpened.
"At whose instruction?"
"The lower works had been named in correspondence." SOURCE REQUIRED.
"The letter is gone." The archive vessel smiled with Kael's stolen face. It was a poor choice. The real one was currently wrapped in three blankets, gray with blood loss, and still looked more alive. Marrek saw that smile. Fear passed through him. SOURCE WITHIN PRESENT CLAIMANT. PRODUCE THE RECORD. The white shelves inside the vessel slammed shut.
"The succession record is already before the court." Dalen turned his sword until its point faced the vessel.
"This is the source of my standing." SECOND CLAIMANT INTEREST ESTABLISHED. PRODUCE RELATED INSTRUCTION. The stone around the vessel's knees tightened. Paper cracked inside its split shadow. One page pushed halfway from the darkness, then stopped. Black wax sealed its lower edge. Red wax marked the upper corner with the impression of Marrek's bronze seal. The two colors had been pressed at different times. The court pulled. Marrek flinched as though the page had been torn from his skin. SERVICE TRIAL: KAEL VEYR.
ORIGINAL ROUTE: SECOND DESCENT, EASTERN ASH VEIN. AMENDED ROUTE: THIRD DESCENT, ABANDONED LIFT, BLACK-GLASS FLOOR. RECOVERY: ONE BLACK SHARD. The original route remained beneath Othran's regent notation. The third descent had been written over it in Marrek's hand. ALTERATION AFTER AUTHORITY. ROUTE SUBSTITUTE ACKNOWLEDGED BY ELDER MARREK.
"You changed it," Othran said. Marrek's mouth hardened.
"The eastern vein had been stripped bare." RESOURCE CONDITION FALSE. Marrek closed his eyes. The cord around his wrists shortened.
"I changed it."
"Why?" Dalen asked. Marrek looked at him. For years, he had taught Dalen how to enter a room, how long to let an inferior wait before answering, how to turn praise into debt. Even kneeling, some remnant of the old elder tried to arrange his face into instruction.
"Because Moonspire had taken an interest in your ascent." Orwen's split shadow folded inward. MOONSPIRE AUTHORITY ASSERTED. SOURCE DISTINGUISH.
"The letter carried the old crescent and seven eyes on its reverse," Marrek said.
"The split tower on its face. It said the service trial would resolve both Veyr succession and Moonspire selection."
"And you believed it?" Dalen asked.
"I believed it knew about the judgment in your Fourth Gate. No one outside the seated council should have known." Miren's voice was cold.
"So proof that someone had stolen our secret convinced you to obey them." Marrek looked toward the coffin.
"It promised Dalen a place in Moonspire."
"It promised you your seat," Dalen said. Marrek did not answer. The court did. MOTIVE PREVIOUSLY ADMITTED. SELF-PRESERVATION MATERIAL. Dalen laughed once, without humor.
"At least the architecture remembers when you lie."
"A feature wasted on your family," Vaelthar said. Kael opened one eye.
"Which branch?"
"Yes." Maera checked his pupils again.
"You are fading."
"I have been informed I look decorative."
"You informed yourself."
"A reliable source." Her expression did not change, but she drew the last tonic from a narrow red vial and held it near his mouth.
"This will raise your pulse. It will also make the pain worse."
"You continue to make excellent offers." Lysara took the vial from Maera and tipped it carefully between his lips. The tonic tasted of iron, winterroot, and several personal insults. Heat struck his stomach. His wounded side clenched hard enough to tear a sound from him before he could bury it. Lysara's hand moved from beneath his head to his shoulder.
"Stay." The word was quiet. Not court language. Not an election. Kael looked at her until the white at the edge of his vision receded.
"You make it sound tempting." Color rose at the tips of her ears.
"Survive first. Misunderstand me afterward." The court observed them. MEDICAL STIMULANT ADMINISTERED. CAPACITY REVIEW. Maera placed her fingers at his throat again.
"He can ask relevant questions. He cannot stand, elect, challenge, or do anything else he will immediately pretend was included." LIMITED EXAMINATION PERMITTED. CHALLENGE REMAINS SUSPENDED. Kael looked at the page above the stage.
"Read the rest of the black-wax instruction." The archive vessel's smile returned.
"The first claimant requests evidence as though he still possesses standing to oppose me."
"I asked Marrek." Every face turned to the bound elder. Kael watched understanding arrive too late in the vessel's borrowed eyes. He had not challenged its source. He had asked a called witness to complete his testimony. Marrek swallowed.
"The first line said: Confirm descent." The black wax opened. Words appeared. CONFIRM DESCENT.
"The second," Kael said.
"Recover shard if exposed." RECOVER SHARD IF EXPOSED. The Cinder Seal pressed against Kael's ribs. It recognized the wording. So did Vaelthar.
"Not the shard," the ancient being said. Kael's gaze fixed on the black mineral named in the service record.
"Me." Marrek looked at him.
"Continue," Kael said.
"No corpse required if fire manifests." NO CORPSE REQUIRED IF FIRE MANIFESTS. Dalen's clean golden branch recoiled from the contaminated one. The seventh witness lifted its dead hand. CONDITIONAL OUTCOMES DETECTED. COMPLETE BOTH BRANCHES. The black wax split from crown to root. Writing unfolded across the air. IF FIRE DOES NOT MANIFEST: FIRST CLAIMANT'S FAILURE MATURES CONTINGENT SUCCESSION. SECOND CLAIMANT PROCEEDS TO THE WHITE TOWER. Below it, another branch opened.
IF FIRE MANIFESTS: FIRST CLAIMANT IS TO BE CONTAINED. WITNESS KEY IS TO BE RECOVERED. BEARER PROCEEDS TO THE WHITE TOWER. For a moment, Dalen and Kael both stared at the last line. Then Dalen turned toward Orwen.
"The examination was never choosing between us." Orwen's face had gone pale.
"No." The sixth witness line tightened through his shadow. He did not resist it.
"It was deciding which heir Moonspire received." WHICHEVER HEIR RETURNED. The judgment branch inside Dalen's Fourth Gate twisted. Black wax crawled along the golden characters toward his heart. Miren struck the coffin lid with her palm.
"Remove it." The court faced Dalen. CONTAMINATED STANDING MAY BE RELEASED. CONSEQUENCE REQUIRED. ARIC SUCCESSION STANDING FORFEITED. FOURTH GATE DAMAGE NOT RESTORED. SECOND CLAIM AND ASCENT COLLATERAL RETAINED UNTIL TESTIMONY ENDS. Dalen read every line. His sword trembled in his hand. Kael knew what the court was asking. Give up the inheritance Marrek had built his life around. Keep the wound it had carved into him. Receive no freedom, no restored cultivation, and no promise of Moonspire in return.
Only the certainty that the black wax would no longer reach his heart. Miren extended one gray hand from the coffin.
"Dalen." He looked at his mother for the first time without anger. That almost made it worse.
"Did you know?" he asked.
"No."
"Would you have chosen me if you had?" Miren did not offer him a merciful lie.
"I don't know." The golden branch blackened another inch. ELECTION PRESSURE INCREASES. Dalen raised his sword. Marrek leaned forward.
"Do not throw away ten years because a dead court demands theater." Dalen brought the blade down. It stopped against the golden branch. Not cutting. Holding it away from his heart.
"I will release it," he said through his teeth, "after he answers one question." He pointed the blade toward the archive vessel.
"Who at the white tower was waiting for whichever heir returned?" The vessel became perfectly still. Orwen's divided shadow moved three steps behind him. Once. Twice. On the third movement, it turned toward the sealed western passage. Something on the other side struck the wall. Jorren's shadowless body arched on the arena floor. A line of black writing appeared beneath his skin. The seventh witness rose from its seat. ERASED WITNESS CONTAINS WITHHELD DESTINATION. The wall split open.
Paper-white hands reached through the crack. And every one of them wore the Crimson Star.
