As Yang stepped into the mist that blanketed the entire ground of the peak he noticed something peculiar. The mist was part of the peak's formation. That much was clear from the higher concentration of qi in it. That in itself wasn't worth remarking on. Every peak he had visited had its own formation, and each residence and building within each peak had its own smaller formation layered inside the larger one. Once you had cultivated enough, recognizing areas with higher concentrations of qi became second nature.
No, it was not the concentration that surprised him. It was how the qi moved. Usually, within a peak formation, the qi would be present everywhere, distributed unevenly depending on what was consuming or generating it in any given spot. Some areas took in more because of active formations. Others gave off more because of spirit plants, natural treasures, or even a secondary formation nested inside the first. The distribution was never equal, but it was always ambient, passive, existing rather than directed.
Every peak had its own relationship with qi, shaped by its spirit plants, buildings, residents, and its formation, whether natural or engineered. He would be the first to admit how little he still understood about formations and qi behavior. His own experience was restricted to what the outer sect peak had taught him and the limited glimpses he had seen of the wider inner sect. But what he was feeling now was not something he had encountered before. This qi was not ambient. It flowed.
Yang took a few more steps forward and stood still, trying to put words to what his senses were telling him. The qi moved in patterns. Not random eddies, or the slow tidal pull of dense gathering, but something more organised. Rising and falling. Long stretches of even movement broken by sudden quickenings, settling again before climbing once more. He stood very still and felt it more carefully. It was not one current. It was several, woven together.
Some moved high, light, and quick, threading in patterns that seemed almost playful. Others moved low and deep and slow. Between them, mid-level currents wove back and forth, connecting the high to the low, filling the space between with motion in a way that made them all feel like different parts of the same living thing. Where the qi moved faster, the mist thinned. Where it slowed, the mist gathered. The patterns of density and thinning shifted according to some logic he could not yet grasp.
Yang took another step. The currents shifted around him. Not in response to his movement, he realised. They had shifted before he stepped. They were already moving toward something else entirely, and his presence was simply incidental to a larger pattern already in progress. He stopped again and listened. Not with his ears. With whatever sense perceived qi. There was a shape to it. Rhythm. That was the word. He could not have explained how he knew. He had no training in this and no framework for what this was.
But the rises and falls came at intervals. Long and short. Stress and release. The high currents pulsed faster than the low ones, but they all moved in relation to each other in a way his mind kept trying to count. He had walked through plenty of qi-dense areas in his time at the sect. Lingcao Peak (Spirit Herb Peak) had its own particular feel, the qi thick and rich with the presence of so many spirit plants. This was nothing like that. Nothing like any peak he had visited. This qi had intent.
As though somewhere ahead of him, beyond the mist, something was shaping these flowing patterns deliberately and releasing them into the air around the peak, where they continued on their own momentum. The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation. He walked on, more slowly now, following the trail of other spectators toward a large structure visible in the distance. He paid attention to how the currents responded as he passed through them.
They did not break around him. They continued on their paths, flowing through and past him as though he were not there at all. He noticed something else as he walked. His footsteps made no sound on the stone path beneath him, which was strange in itself. Stone paths usually carried at least a soft echo. He looked around at the other disciples moving alongside him toward the venue.
He could see them talking to one another, mouths moving with the same enthusiasm he was used to from the alchemy events, but there was none of the background hum that accompanied a crowd. No blurring of voices into noise. Just the individual sounds of the peak itself, distinct and clear and somehow perfectly placed. The rush of a waterfall somewhere to his left. The chirping of birds in the bamboo grove ahead. The soft movement of the mist.
Everything that could be heard seemed like a perfect accompaniment to the flow of qi moving through the air rather than noise competing against it. Yang took it all in and smiled. This peak was certainly worthy of its name. Yunhe Peak. The Cloud Harmony Peak. The home of music cultivation in White Cloud Sect. He made his way to the arena. It could seat thousands. A ring of sweeping arched forms encircled a central stage, the architecture far more elaborate than any venue he had seen in the sect so far.
Every surface was shaped as though the building itself had been considered as a musical instrument. He found a seat in a decent position among the rapidly filling audience and settled down with a nod to the inner sect disciples on either side of him. Even here in the arena, with hundreds of disciples talking to each other with the same enthusiasm evidenced by constantly moving mouths, there was no background hum. No noise accumulation. The way sound behaved in this place was simply different.
Yang had no one from his usual group to distract him and was free to watch the people around him when an elder stepped onto the stage. He was refined in his bearing as he stood with his hand behind his back.
"Welcome to Yunhe Peak (Cloud Harmony Peak)" His voice reached every corner of the arena at exactly the right volume. Not the amplified declaration of the alchemy and plant cultivation event elders, whose projected voice had always carried the slight flatness of technique over distance. This was simply the elder speaking, and somehow the sound reached every seat perfectly. Yang noticed the disciples around him register the difference. Some looked surprised. Some nodded as though they had expected exactly this.
"Today we are gathered to witness music cultivators of our esteemed sect compete in the Wide Resonance Trial." The elder raised one hand and swept it in a slow arc. The arena transformed. The seats moved back from the stage, smoothly and without warning. Yang felt his own seat shift beneath him and grabbed the rising armrests on either side of him on instinct. Around him, a scattered number of disciples startled visibly. Others sat perfectly still.
The elder section remained entirely composed as the changes occurred. The stage itself began to rise, climbing smoothly until it was a few feet higher. When everything stilled, the venue was a different space than it had been thirty seconds before. More grand and luxurious. The elder walked a slow circle at the centre of the stage. He had a slight smile on his face, pleased at the audience's reaction to his show of power.
"Forgive the disturbance. I felt it best to make the venue more suited to the art you are about to see." He paused.
"Many of you may not be familiar with music cultivation. It is a niche path. Few cultivators have the talent for it, and fewer still the patience to walk it fully." He paused before continuing.
"Many paths exist in cultivation. The sword cultivator commands force. The formation master constructs invisible architecture from nothing. The alchemist distills a mountain's worth of spiritual energy into something the size of a fingernail. All of them are practitioners of power." His tone shifted to proud.
"None of them are practitioners of art."
"This is the distinction that matters. A sword strike can be beautiful. But that beauty is incidental. The sword does not care about beauty. It cares about cutting. Strip the beauty from a sword technique, and you still have a technique. Strip the beauty from music, and you no longer have music. You have noise."
"Music cannot be separated from what it is. Power and beauty are not two things in this path. They are one thing, inseparable, the way light and warmth from the same flame cannot be divided."
"When a music cultivator heals, they do not simply close a wound. They restore. When they strike, they do not simply damage. They unmake. When they move through the world, they hear what others cannot hear, sense what others cannot sense, understand what others may never be able to." Yang thought this elder was certainly proud of his path. His expression became serious.
"Do not mistake elegance for softness. There is nothing passive in this. Sometimes listening is the most demanding thing a cultivator can do."
"We practice until nothing escapes us. Until the world is always speaking and we are always understanding." He turned and looked out at the full arena.
"Now to the main event."
