Just like that, the entire hiking club vanished into the bushes, leaving me completely alone with our resident narcissistic monarch in a freshly scorched wasteland. June turned her head to look directly at me, and for a fleeting, deeply unsettling moment, her usual high-society defenses seemed to completely evaporate. Her eyes, which were usually narrow pools of icy judgement, softened into something unusually gentle, shimmering with a quiet vulnerability that completely caught me off guard.
She parted her lips slightly, clearly preparing to deliver some grand, profound declaration, but no sound actually managed to escape her throat. She just stood there, silently wrestling with whatever words were currently stuck in her royal windpipe.
"What?" I asked, raising my eyebrows in genuine, blinking confusion as I tilted my head toward her. The single syllable hit her like a personal slap to the face, and her soft expression vanished faster than a free sample at a food court. Her eyebrows aggressively furrowed into a majestic scowl, her aristocratic features instantly flushing with deep, burning offense as if my very voice had personally insulted her entire royal lineage.
She snapped her mouth shut, whipped around with a dramatic swirl of her soot-stained tunic, and began marching away from me with incredibly heavy, angry footsteps that practically dented the burnt mud. I stood frozen in the exact same spot, scratching the side of my head as I watched her furious, high-velocity retreat. My brain was spinning its wheels in absolute, unadulterated bewilderment, completely unable to process the bizarre social landmine I had apparently just detonated.
"What on earth did I even do?" I called out to the empty, smoking clearing, completely left behind in a state of utter, clueless confusion. ••••• We traveled deeper and deeper into the suffocating depths of the corrupted forest, stepping over gnarled, rotting roots that looked entirely too much like skeletal fingers for my personal liking. The further we marched, the more I noticed that the entire place was unusually, eerily empty, devoid of any normal woodland noises.
There were no annoying insects buzzing around our ears, no birds chirping overhead, and absolutely zero signs of active wildlife. It honestly felt like even the local monsters were aggressively avoiding this specific corner of the woods, which is always a fantastic sign that you are walking straight into something incredibly bad. Our frantic traveling circus came to a sudden, grinding halt the very moment Fiona raised her small, dirt-stained hand into the damp air.
The tiny druid slowly closed her fingers into a tight fist, tilting her head to the side as her eyes drifted shut, seemingly listening to the invisible, quiet whispers of nature itself. She looked so intensely focused that she might have been trying to decipher a conversation between two nearby mossy rocks.
"This right here must be one of the absolute best logistical advantages of having a nature-loving druid strapped to our party," I remarked in a low whisper, leaning slightly toward the others while gesturing toward our pint-sized radar system.
"It saves us a ton of money on actual tracking equipment." Suddenly, out of absolute thin air, Fiona summoned her sturdy wooden quarterstaff into her grip with a crisp, magical ripple that momentarily warped the chilly air.
"Och, th' braw clanjamfrie o' rreitchan bichtis er' rright rround th' cornerr, aye, n' th' puir auld rroots er' fair grrreitin' wi' th' heavy thud o' th' black deirrkniss," Fiona said, her thick Scottish accent completely smashing the words into a chaotic, tangled heap of rolling consonants and mashed vowels. Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
It was an absolute phonetic catastrophe that was completely, one hundred percent impossible for my normal human brain to decode, though the pure, unwavering kindness in her gentle voice remained entirely intact as she tightened her grip on her weapon.
Based on her aggressive body language, the way she was staring into the nearby trees, and the fact that she had just materialized a giant hitting stick out of thin air, I was highly confident she was trying to tell us that some very loud, very angry bad guys were currently creeping around close by and completely unable to hide their presence, unlike those sneaky little plant weeds we squashed in the village square.
"Well, it looks like our brief union-mandated coffee break is officially over, and it is time for us to get right back to the grand, glorious tradition of hitting things until they stop moving," I sighed softly. The peaceful silence of the empty forest had been fun while it lasted, but our luck was clearly running on empty.
Fiona dropped low to the ground and began to sneak smoothly through the thick, overgrown bushes, her small form navigating the tangled undergrowth with the effortless grace of a woodland creature. The rest of our frantic group immediately hunkered down and followed directly after her, trying our absolute best not to make enough noise to alert the entire neighborhood.
We crawled through the damp leaves until Fiona stopped, prompting us to cautiously poke our heads out from our respective green hiding spots to get a clear look at the terrain ahead. Gathered from afar along the roots of the massive, towering trees, a group of seven incredibly interesting creatures were casually loitering around the area. And here I thought I had already witnessed the absolute peak of weird, nightmare-fuel aesthetics for the day back at the village square.
The local ecosystem apparently took great pride in continuously outdoing itself in the department of pure, unadulterated bizarre design. I narrowed my eyes beneath my squint-guard bandana to thoroughly examine the disturbing physical appearance of the seven monsters standing before us. What I was looking at turned out to be a pack of bulky, lumbering quadrupedal beasts that looked like a tragic collision between an angry boulder and a rotting lumber yard.
Their entire frames were formed from a dense amalgamation of decaying logs and damp soil, looking entirely too heavy to function. Thick, calcified shelves of shelf-fungi lined their broad backs like plates of organic armor, while glowing patches of neon-green moss actively crept across their bodies like a terrible skin condition.
To make matters worse, these lovely fellows completely lacked distinct eyes, possessing only a heavy skull made of hardened wood with a gaping, dark maw that was constantly drooling a thick, spore-laden slime onto the forest floor. Four trunk-like legs dragged their massive bodies forward, leaving a neat little trail of rapidly growing mushrooms in their wake as they paced around the massive tree trunks.
"The celestial architects responsible for designing this wonderland really must have a profound, deeply personal hatred for anything that doesn't look completely gross, huh?" I whispered into the chilly air, tilting my head in absolute fascination and mild disgust at the lumbering quadrupeds. Right on cue, a familiar, bright blue holographic interface flashed into existence directly in front of my face, and I locked my eyes onto the glowing text to see exactly what kind of freaks we were dealing with this time.
••••• Name: Fungal Shambler Tier: 1 (Common) Level: 2 Element: Nature Description: A bulky, lumbering quadrupedal beast formed from a dense amalgamation of rotting logs and damp soil. Thick shelves of shelf-fungi line its broad back like plates of armor, while glowing neon-green moss patches creep across its entire frame. It lacks distinct eyes, possessing only a heavy skull made of hardened wood with a gaping, dark maw that constantly drools a thick, spore-laden slime.
Four trunk-like legs drag its heavy body forward, leaving a trail of rapidly growing mushrooms in its wake. Stats: Main Stat: Vitality (Massive health pool and high health regeneration). Physical Defense: Medium (Dense wood and soil absorb heavy impact). Magic Defense: Medium (Spore clouds dampen incoming elemental energy).
Abilities: Spore-Cloud Slam: The Shambler rears back on its hind legs and violently crashes its front trunks into the earth, sending out a massive wave of choking, toxic green spores in a five-meter radius. Mycelial Tether: The creature unhinges its jaw to spew a thick, sticky stream of fungal roots directly at an enemy's legs, pinning them firmly to the ground upon contact.
Fungal Regrowth: The monster stops moving entirely to channel its energy, causing its open wounds to visibly knit back together as fresh layers of moss and shelf-fungi rapidly sprout over the damaged areas. Resistances & Weaknesses: Resistant To: Nature (Immune to plant-based poisons and absorbs ambient forest magic). Weaknesses: • Fire: Its dry internal wood and flammable moss ignite easily, causing the creature to panic and burn rapidly.
• Ice: Extreme cold freezes its damp soil composition, cracking its armor and heavily reducing its movement speed. • Lightning: High-voltage strikes easily split its wooden frame apart and short-circuit its fungal nervous system. •••••
