The crystal pulsed in Donna's hand, casting rhythmic shadows against the walls, but Arthur was entirely done being patient.
"Before we touch either of those," he said, his voice cutting through the damp air, "we talk." He wasn't looking at the riddle or the crystal. He was looking at the construct. The geometry rotated with its usual clinical hum, but Arthur had spent the last hours learning to read its configurations, and this one was defensive. Lines compressed, symmetry tightened, it knew what was coming.
"You knew there was a guardian down here." Arthur's voice had dropped into the register he used on site when a contractor had cut a corner and someone had nearly been killed. The tone that made experienced foremen stop talking.
"You let us walk in blind."
"The guardian presence was inferrable from available contextual data."
"Inferrable by whom? You, who have been monitoring this planet from whatever perch you inhabit? Or us, who have had hours to accept that the world has gone mad?" Silence.
"My shoulder is partially torn," Arthur continued.
"Steve has a chunk missing from his arm, and Donna nearly wrenched her spine out. Next time, the cost is going to be higher. So here is how this works going forward. Everything you can share, you share. No rationing. No protocol games. If you want me to go along with whatever this is." The construct held its compressed pattern for three seconds. Then its geometry loosened by a single degree of rotation, and Arthur heard the tonal hum drop a half-step.
"Certain information remains architecturally inaccessible," the construct said.
"Memory partitions are encrypted. They unlock as the candidate reaches system milestones. This is not a choice. It is an engineering constraint." Steve's head came up.
"Your own memory is locked behind the same progression system we're levelling through?"
"That assessment is not inaccurate. Though the progression is tied to nodes and not levels."
"So you genuinely can't see what's ahead of us?" Donna asked. She'd been cleaning the axe blade with a strip torn from her sleeve, but her eyes hadn't left the floating geometry.
"You're not choosing to withhold information. You literally don't have it."
"Both descriptions address aspects of the restriction. Certain sectors are locked. Others are accessible but protocol-limited." The geometry reconfigured.
"The distinction is architectural, not behavioural." Arthur processed that. An AI whose knowledge was partitioned, unlocking in stages as the humans it guided reached physical checkpoints. It meant the construct couldn't spoil the test even if it wanted to. The answers didn't exist in its accessible memory until the relevant milestone was reached. It also meant that every silence, every non-answer, was data. If it couldn't respond, the question had touched a locked partition.
And locked partitions meant the answer mattered.
"We need something to call you," Arthur said. The shift surprised even him; it came from somewhere practical, you label components on a schematic because unlabelled parts got overlooked.
"I'm tired of thinking of you as 'the floating shape' or 'that thing.' What's your name?"
"I do not have a name. I have a function." Steve tilted his head.
"Surely you've got something. A serial number? A model designation?"
"Autonomous Relay: Cognitive Interface Hub. Designation AR-C1H1-E." Steve mouthed the letters, his eyes narrowing as he traced the syntax.
"AR-C1H1-E. A, R, C, H..."
"Archie," Donna said flatly.
"His name is Archie."
"That is a significant reduction in informational precision," the construct stated.
"And yet," Donna replied, fixing it with a steady look, "that is what we are going with." The construct, Archie, rotated once. He did not object further.
"Right then, Archie," Arthur said. Naming it helped. It gave the thing a fixed point in his head, something to anchor the rest of the strangeness to.
"What exactly can you tell us?"
"Systems you are currently interacting with," Archie said.
"Diagnostic data for entities you have successfully encountered. Confirmation or correction of theories you develop through direct observation. Environmental assessments." A brief pause followed.
"I can explain the mechanics of what you have already experienced. I cannot preview what you have not." Donna pointed at the crystal she'd set on the altar.
"Then explain that."
"Monster core. A condensed Ether matrix formed within high-saturation biological entities. You extracted it with acceptable precision."
"And it does what, exactly?" Archie extended a thin blue line towards the crystal, then towards Arthur's battered shield.
"Artifact creation. The System designates this as the Law of Binding." Steve straightened.
"Binding. As in crafting?"
"Correct. Three components are required." The blue line touched the shield.
"A vessel." The line touched the crystal.
"A core." The geometry pulsed with a low-frequency hum.
"And intent."
"Intent," Arthur repeated, frowning.
"Meaning what? I just think really hard and the crystal turns into a magic item?"
"The user must form a clear conceptual outcome. Visualise the desired function. The core restructures the vessel according to the combined properties of all three components. Within defined structural limits." Arthur stared at the crystal in Donna's hand, then at the wreckage of his shield.
"That's not an explanation, that's barely a fortune cookie. How am I supposed to visualise a 'function' for an alien energy crystal? I'm a structural engineer, not a -""You are a structural engineer," Archie said. The interruption was unusual enough that Arthur stopped mid-sentence.
"That background should make the execution significantly easier for you in particular." Steve leaned forward. For once, he didn't start talking immediately.
"Intent," he said.
"Visualise the function." He looked at the crystal, then at the shield, then at Arthur.
"Archie said your profession should make it easier. Why would an engineering background matter for a… magic crafting ritual?" He stopped and Arthur could see it arriving.
"Unless the intent isn't abstract. Unless the system needs specifics." His voice accelerated.
"You don't visualise in abstractions, Arthur. You visualise in specifications. Load capacity. Deflection tolerance. Failure thresholds. Maybe that's what intent means here. Not 'I wish for a magic shield.' It's 'I need this object to withstand a specific force applied at a specific angle.'" Arthur looked at the dented bin lid on his arm. The corrugated steel was buckled inward from the bull's charge, scarred with claw marks from the foxes. It had saved his life twice and nearly failed both times.
He took the crystal from Donna. It felt alive, the blue light pulsing against his skin in time with the rhythm behind his eyes.
"So I just... think about what I need it to do," Arthur said. It still sounded absurd. But the crystal was warm and the shield was broken and a few hours ago he'd been drinking beer and playing D&D. Absurd had lost its meaning somewhere between the sky turning violet and a bull manifesting in an underground temple.
"Structurally," Steve said.
"Think about it structurally." Arthur closed his eyes. He held the crystal against the centre of the shield and tried to think. Nothing happened. He was too aware of the stone bench beneath him, the ache in his shoulder, Steve and Donna watching. His brain kept circling the instruction instead of following it. Visualise the function. What function? Defensive function. What does that mean in engineering terms? He stopped trying to think about the shield and he thought about the bull. The charge.
The moment of impact. The way the steel had folded inward like cardboard, deforming around the horn with a screech that had vibrated through his skeleton. His shoulder, the ligaments stretching past tolerance. The calculation his brain had run automatically in that fraction of a second. The angle of deflection, the point of load application, the margin between survival and puncture. And the answer was - not enough. The steel wasn't thick enough. The geometry wasn't right. The material couldn't absorb the energy.

The thin corrugated steel darkened and thickened, its surface shifting from galvanised silver to deep gunmetal grey.
Veins of what looked like bone spread through the metal in patterns that echoed the creature's chitinous plating. The weight doubled and then settled, giving it a balance that hadn't existed before. When the light faded, the shield didn't look like a bin lid anymore. It looked like it had been forged. Blue text assembled in his vision.

The sound that came back was deep and solid. He smiled. Steve barked a laugh.
"Archie, does this game have crafting professions? We could corner the economy early." Archie didn't answer. Donna narrowed her eyes at him. For a moment Arthur just held the shield. It sat on his arm the way the best tools did, like it had been waiting for him. He'd felt this once before, the first time he'd picked up a plumb bob on a job site at seventeen, the weight dropping true, and thinking: this is how the world is supposed to work.
Except plumb bobs didn't grow bone veins or pulse with the remains of something he'd killed twenty minutes ago. He let the moment pass. There'd be time for wonder later, if they survived long enough to have a later. Steve ran his fingers along the bone-veined surface.
"The core's biological properties merged with the steel. The chitin pattern. It's using the bull's structural design as a reinforcement template. That's materials engineering at a scale we can't replicate." Donna tested the edge with her thumb.
"Is it heavier?"
"Substantially," Arthur nodded "But it sits better. Like the weight knows where my arm is."
"The artifact interfaces with the bearer's Nadi Matrix," Archie stated.
"Weight distribution is optimised for current physical parameters." Steve was staring at the shield with the hunger of a man who wanted to take it apart and understand every layer.
"If every monster core can do this, if every piece of equipment can be upgraded through intent-based crafting..."
"It means we need more cores," Donna said. She was looking at her axe.
"It also means we need to understand why it worked," Steve said. He turned to Archie.
"You said the shield interfaces with something called the Nadi Matrix. What is that?"
"It is a biological substrate layered into the human nervous system. It converts ambient Ether and system interactions into structured data and renders that data in cognitive-compatible formats."
"Try that again," Donna said, crossing her arms, "and this time, assume you are talking to people who do not spend their lives inside a server rack." The construct stopped rotating for a second.
"Status displays, attribute quantification, integration thresholds. The Nadi Matrix is the reason you can perceive the System at all." Steve's fingers drummed on his knee.
"So that's the interface translating all of this. Levels, attributes, status windows." He stopped drumming and his eyes moved across the gash on Arthur's shoulder, the bandage on his own forearm, then back to Archie.
"Attribute quantification," he said slowly.
"That's the same substrate that would handle allocation."
"Not inaccurate."
"So when we allocate, we're asking the Matrix to modify our biology. Through the same interface that just folded a bull into a bin lid."
"Your interpretation is sufficient." Donna's axe had paused halfway through its cleaning stroke.
"Archie. When we allocate, what happens to us physically?" Archie's geometry rotated once.
"Integration stabilisation is non-instantaneous. Substrate adjustment varies by attribute."
"Translate to English," Donna said, running her hand down her face.
"Strength allocation triggers short-duration musculoskeletal recalibration. Dexterity produces transient motor retraining. Acuity generates brief sensory reprocessing. Constitution is subjectively invasive."
"Define invasive."
"Thermal response. Muscle fasciculation. Reduced voluntary motor control during the adjustment window."
"And how long is the window?"
"Variable. Anywhere from seconds to several minutes." The three of them sat with that for a moment, then Donna looked at Steve and raised her eyebrow. She did not need to vocalize the told-you-so.
"Fine. I take it back," Steve said.
"I take back every objection I raised on the way down here."
"Accepted," Donna said. Arthur filed the information. Constitution allocation might make you sit down involuntarily. Strength allocation temporarily rewrote your muscles. Any one of those in an uncontrolled environment was a death sentence.
"Going forward," Arthur said, "We allocate one at a time, the other two on watch and with doors locked."
"Agreed," Donna said.
"Grudgingly agreed," Steve said.
"But agreed." He leaned forward, the curiosity coming back.
"You said layered on to our nervous system. Where did it come from?"
"It is a lineage marker consistent with certain genetic haplogroups. It enables stable interaction with Seeder infrastructure." Steve's eyes narrowed.
"Seeder infrastructure. The same Seeders who built the Grid?" Silence.
"Explain more about the genetic haplogroups, aren't they genetic ancestry?" Arthur tried. Silence.
"Let's try a different angle then," Steve pressed on, undeterred.
"The interface uses classic tabletop mechanics. Levels, attributes, experience points. That cannot be a coincidence. Someone deliberately designed this translation layer to map onto a mathematical framework humans already understood."
"The Curators embedded precursor frameworks into your species' cultural development," Archie stated.
"Rule-based simulations were distributed across your history to prime cognitive readiness for System mechanics." None of them spoke. They knew what the construct meant but this was so beyond the realm of possibility that it had left them dumbfounded. Steve stared at the construct.
"Are you telling me that Dungeons and Dragons was a training manual?"
"The manual was disguised as leisure to ensure maximum cultural penetration." Steve's mouth opened. Arthur could see the cascade firing behind his eyes. Almost fifty years of gaming history, of character sheets and saving throws and armour class calculations, reframing itself as something planted.
"Gary Gygax," Steve whispered.
"Arneson. The Lake Geneva basement. They were -""Vehicles for distribution," Archie said.
"The foundational mathematical framework was provided. The creative implementation was entirely human." Donna stopped cleaning her axe completely, her face setting into a cold, clinical expression.
"So someone handed them the core numbers and let them build a game around it to prime the population."
"Your species was given a biological operating manual," Archie stated.
"You converted it into fiction and philosophy." The words settled into the ancient stone. Donna's expression wasn't disbelief. She'd stopped being surprised three hours ago. It was the colder recognition of scope. Thousands of years of human culture, shaped and guided for a moment that most of humanity would never see coming.
"And forty-two?" Steve said quietly.
"Why does the first level threshold require exactly forty-two Integration?"
"Forty-two is the most stable integer for initial biological interface calibration," Archie said.
"It recurs across Seeder mathematics as a foundational constant." Arthur had been turning something over."Steve. The system message we got in the pub. What was the exact duration it listed for the calibration event?" Steve responded almost immediately.
"System Calibration Event Initiated. Planetary Ether Integration in Progress. Fence Protocol Engaged. Duration: 1, 260 days."
"Three and a half years," Arthur said.
"Which is..." They looked at each other.
"Forty-two months," they said together. Donna exhaled through her nose.
"Wasn't that in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as well? Forty-two. The answer to life, the universe, and everything?"
"Your species identified the value," Archie said.
"You simply misclassified its function." Steve's pale face broke into a wide, brilliant grin despite the bandages.
"I swear it feels like the entire world is one giant Easter egg."
"Archie, the riddle. Can you solve it for us?" Arthur asked.
"I cannot solve puzzles on the candidate's behalf. I can verify interpretation accuracy."
"Of course you can't. Why would the apocalypse be simple?" Steve turned to the floating words. Arthur could see his brain shifting gears, from the weight of civilisational manipulation to the immediate question of where the text was telling them to go.
"Right," Steve said. He cracked his knuckles, a habit Arthur had seen a thousand times, usually right before Steve disappeared into a research hole for six hours.

That is the comfortable version, and I taught it, because the alternative was unprofessional. The alternative is that some of these were never fully the smith's to keep. That the world permitted a result under conditions no craftsman controlled, produced the object, and then closed the door. I cannot prove it. I have handled the swords. I wrote the trade-route paper myself, and I believed it. But I have just watched a bin lid become a wall in front of me. Bullguard Shield. Vessel: bin lid. Core: bull guardian.
