"It sounds complicated," Cédric said.
"It isn't. You know in your head and heart what you want to achieve. The system is good at processing intent," Arthur said.
"Watch." Donna picked up the Conduit-Edge Axe and held the alpha's core against the flat of the blade. She closed her eyes. Arthur could see her intent in the set of her shoulders, the stillness that came over her when she stopped calculating threats and focused everything on a single point. Cut through anything.
The core dissolved over fifteen seconds, sinking into the steel like a stone into quicksand, the blade's surface rippling as the metal shifted at a level below what the eye could track, the molecular structure rewriting itself. The blade darkened from steel-grey to deep iron-black. A ridge formed along the spine of the axe head, echoing the chitin plates of the creature that had produced the core. The edge carried a luminescence sharper than the Printworks binding.
Rémy said something in French that didn't need translation. Donna swung the axe once. Weight forward, the head carrying new mass. She adjusted her grip, testing the balance with the instinct of someone who'd spent years assessing whether a tool would do what she needed in the two seconds she had to use it.
"More punch," she said.
"More bite." She ran her thumb near the edge without touching it.
"But I could feel, the core had more, it couldn't give." Marcel was staring at the axe. He looked at the hazelnut-sized core still in his pocket, then back at the transformed blade. Cédric was writing in his ledger. Nadia's face hadn't changed, but her eyes had.
"The intent coherence was above average for a first-generation binding," Archie said. Steve glanced up at him.
"Above average compared to what?"
"Comparative data."
"From where, Archie?" Archie's geometry rotated once and did not answer. Arthur watched the transformation finish. His engineer's eye read what had happened: the Ether had reinforced the grain, densified the matrix, pushed the steel toward something harder. But it had also stopped. The blade was harder, denser, better. The fire axe beneath the enhancement, though, was still a fire axe. Mass-produced stamped steel. Designed to breach doors, not to channel the distilled energy of an apex predator.
The core had not given everything it could. The vessel had run out of room. He could feel the bull core's binding through his Resonance, faint but present, the structural integrity that had kept him alive through multiple fights. But the dent had compromised the load path, and the metal beneath was what it had always been: an improvised lid from a skip, hammered into shape by a man who'd had nothing better. The quay offered what he needed. Ironwork was set into the harbour stones at the municipal sewer cover ten metres from where they stood.
"Nadia," he said.
"Can I take that manhole cover? I know replacing it would be a job. But I'm willing to trade you this" - he held up the Bullguard - "for it. The shield's still got the first binding in it. The metal's better than it looks." Nadia looked at the shield, then at the sewer cover, then at Arthur with the expression of a woman who had survived on the Marseille docks by knowing when a deal was weighted in her favour.
"Take it," she said. Arthur set the Bullguard on the crate. The bin lid he'd carried since the Mithraeum. The first thing he'd ever bound. It had taken the bull guardian's charge, a stone knight's fist, twelve boars, and an alpha that could think. Rémy picked it up and tested the weight, nodding once the military in him understood what a shield in an apocalypse was worth. Arthur walked to the quay and came back carrying eighty kilograms of cast iron like it was plywood. His new Strength made the weight irrelevant.
The material assessment ran automatically in the back of his head. The compressive strength, shear tolerance, the uniform grain of foundry iron. This was engineered material, made to carry about 20 metric tonnes. He set it on the crate and reached into his pack for the other core. The human-derived core from Saint-Victor. The dark one with red lines on it. The surface showed patterns that didn't look like crystal; they looked like tissue. The Gardiens didn't know what it was.
The party did, and Archie's geometry dimmed fractionally without comment.
"We talked about this," Donna said, the words aimed at Arthur, not the Gardiens. The shorthand of people who'd already had the argument and reached the conclusion that they needed to take any and every advantage they could get. They hoped they wouldn't lose their morality along the path to more strength. Arthur nodded once without speaking. He held the core against the manhole cover. The iron cold, the core warm. His stomach turned, briefly, before his grip steadied.
He closed his eyes and found the intent, the same words his mind had been running since the first time he'd put himself between a creature and someone who couldn't fight. Hold. Deflect. Endure. Faint lines formed a network of channels that Arthur's Resonance read as load paths, stress distribution architecture built into the metal itself. Force hitting one point would propagate outward through the entire disc. The shield wouldn't just block, it would distribute the force applied. The weight was right.
The balance was perfect. He activated Structural Reinforcement for a brief second and felt the technique flow through the shield with a responsiveness the bin lid had never had, Ether meeting engineered channels instead of forcing through improvised metal. Steve was staring, his gauze-wrapped hands half-raised.
"The difference." He pointed at the axe, then at the shield.
"Almost the same class of core. Same process. Donna's axe is a fire axe that got better. Your shield is a different object."
"The vessel," Arthur said. He'd felt it through the restructuring. The difference between a building designed for the load and one merely surviving it.
"Foundry-grade cast iron versus stamped steel," Steve said.
"The better the base material, the more of the core's potential gets expressed. The fire axe hit a ceiling. The manhole cover didn't." He turned to Archie.
"Vessel quality constrains the binding."
"Vessel composition determines the restructuring ceiling," Archie confirmed.
"A core's energy potential exceeding the vessel's molecular tolerance results in truncated expression."
"So we need better base materials," Steve said.
"Not just better cores. Better things to put them in."
"Torek's support team on Yueshen understood this principle," Archie said.
"They sourced transmuted alloys for binding vessels. The results sustained the candidate through to day seven hundred and twelve." Steve looked up at him.
"You keep doing that. Mentioning people from other planets like they're old work colleagues."
"Torek was a Yueshen-native organism with trilateral symmetry and no bilateral skeletal structure. He was not a person. He was approximately the shape of a starfish, if the starfish were two metres across and could manipulate Ether at range."
"That's worse," Steve said.
"That is significantly worse." The core dissolved into the fabric and the material restructured, overlapping scales forming along the torso, flexible at the joints, rigid across the ribs. Graphite-dark with a faint lustre. She twisted to test it. The scales clicked softly like insect wings.
"Works," she said. His vest thickened into layered plates, denser, heavier, compressed strata that sat on his shoulders like armour built for him.
The torn left side filled in where the binding generated new material from restructured fibres. Compromising flexibility and movement for protection. "Two minor cores," Steve said.
"Two improvised vessels. The results are modest. Good, but modest. Now imagine what Marcel's core could do if he bound it to something better than a stab vest." Marcel looked at the hazelnut crystal in his hand with new eyes.
"Before we leave Marseille," Arthur said to Nadia, "I'll teach your people the binding. Any core, any vessel. The intent matters more than the materials, but better materials help." Nadia studied him, the pragmatist reading the offer for the angle and finding none.
"Why?" she asked with a hint of suspicion.
"Because you gave us shelter, fed us, and your doctor put us back together. That's worth more than a sewer cover." Steve sat apart on the quay wall afterward, the Reacher leaning against the warehouse behind him. His weapon since London. He'd killed with it. Survived with it. But the man who needed a polearm and the man who could feel molecular motion through his fingertips were not the same person, and pretending otherwise was the kind of sentimentality that got people killed.
He stared south toward the limestone ridge. Notre-Dame de la Garde. The Gilded Mother in her crown of light. Arthur found him there a while later staring at the cliff.
"Tomorrow," Arthur said. Behind them came the sound of steel on wood. Donna was testing the axe against a post. Each strike heavier than the last. Each one precise with a clean absoluteness that hadn't been possible before yesterday, the Dexterity threshold rewiring turning every swing into something clean and final. Arthur's shield hummed faintly against his arm. He suspected he'd find out if this was any better than his last shield, the next time something tried to kill him.

Steel has less to give. I have been thinking about this wrong. I have been treating the core as the variable and the vessel as the constant.
Arthur inverted the equation in thirty seconds with a stolen manhole cover. What that implies reaches backwards, a long way. Every archaeological object I have ever catalogued as "ritual," the Bronze Age cauldron hoards, the Luristan swords, the Oxus chalices, was selected for material. Copper alloys are not random. Tin-bronze is not random. Meteoric iron is not random. Every culture that worked sacred metal hit on the same narrow band of substrates and told stories about why that metal was sacred. They were right.
They were right about the fact without having the vocabulary for the mechanism. The sacred metals were the vessels that could hold the most. Somebody taught somebody, once, what kind of thing a vessel has to be. The knowledge decayed into ritual, then into art, then into museum labels written by people like me. Which leaves the other question. Who designed the system to reward material investment, and why design it that way? Archie said "the results sustained the candidate through day seven hundred and twelve."
I noted that. Sustained through. He did not say Torek won or completed anything. He said sustained. There is a clock running somewhere, measured in days, and Yueshen's candidate got to seven hundred and twelve of them. I do not know whether that is a long time or a short one. I do not know whether Torek's team reached a finish line or ran out before they did. Archie offered the number with the flat register of a coroner reading out a time of death. I did not write this down when Donna and Arthur were in earshot.
✎ The vessel matters more than the core. Because as Ether saturates, cores, at least the low grade ones, will be commonplace. Somebody wrote that law into the architecture and somebody taught the ancients to obey it. The next question is what the architecture is trying to get us ready for.
