Chương 14: Containment Forms Are For Attendants

The furnace attendants trained somewhere out of sight, away from the courts where every other discipline in the sect rehearsed its bruises. Lin found that both suspicious and promising. The next morning Gao Ren followed him down toward the lower furnace passages with the Healing Hall seal bright on the back of his wrapped hand and a face arranged for public suffering.

"If anyone asks," he said, "I am here because Discipline Hall gave me nothing to do."

"Too broad. People will ask follow-up questions."

"Then I'm here because Healing Hall forbade palm forms, Brother Ma reassigned me off striking drills, and you keep finding work that nobody brags about." The seal was real, and Brother Ma would confirm the reassignment. Lin could work with a story that survived checking.

"More specific."

"Also worse." They left the outer courts behind, passing down a side lane where the red practice tiles gave way to plain gray slabs stained by ash carts, and the air grew warmer in layers—not the eager heat of a drill field, where disciples hauled fire toward themselves for an audience, but a steadier pressure that had settled into the walls and stayed. Lin's wrist registered it first, then the rib knot. He ran one quiet Ashen Breath and kept walking. Gao Ren glanced at him.

"Servant breathing already?" he asked.

"Diagnostic breathing."

"You renamed it in your head, didn't you."

"Several times." Lin didn't break stride.

"That's how names get injured." The furnace-attendant yard sat behind Lower Furnace Three, screened from the main path by a wall of stacked ash bricks. Men and women in patched gray-brown robes moved between carts, cooling racks, and vent hatches with a rhythm that looked unhurried until Lin tried to track all of it at once and couldn't. An attendant lifted a glowing clinker with iron tongs and walked it to a sand trough without ceremony.

Another stepped between a coughing vent and a cart of dry ash, rotating her stance so the burst of heat rolled past her hip instead of into the load. Nobody cheered, and nobody died, and Lin found both outcomes worth study. Gao Ren slowed at the entrance.

"This is a work yard. Outer disciples aren't supposed to loiter in work yards."

"You're not loitering. You're under medical restriction, seeking non-palm training."

"That's loitering with paperwork." Two attendants passed them carrying a cooling frame between them, and the nearer one looked at Gao Ren's sling, then at Lin's ink slips, then back.

"Lost, young master?" Gao Ren went red from collar to hairline.

"No."

"Punished?"

"No." She had not put down her end of the cooling frame to ask. Lin catalogued that: this yard questioned strangers without stopping work. The attendant looked them over.

"Came on purpose, then?" From Gao Ren's expression, this was the worst accusation yet leveled at him. Lin bowed.

"We came on purpose."

"Brave," she said, and kept walking, the frame hissing faintly between her hands. Gao Ren stared after her.

"I don't know how to answer people here."

"You survived Fang Rui."

"Fang Rui wounds you straightforwardly. This yard uses tools." The older attendant from the manual alcove spotted Lin from across the yard—the one with a neck like braided rope—and came over, shaking his head before he was halfway across.

"Outer disciple. Still no broom?"

"Still unequipped."

"Then you came underprepared." His gaze moved to Gao Ren's wrap.

"Healing Hall seal."

"Temporary," Gao Ren said, tucking it closer.

"Most good things are." Lin bowed.

"This disciple is looking for context on furnace-near strain and ash-mark symptoms." The younger attendant from the alcove turned from a cooling rack.

"He talks like Records Hall now."

"Records Hall had him overnight," the older one said.

"It spreads."

"I'm also looking for Containment Forms," Lin said. That landed differently. Tools stayed in hands, but several attendants around the yard found reasons to be facing this direction, and the younger one stopped pretending to adjust his rack altogether. Gao Ren whispered, "Warn me before the whole yard does that." The older attendant set down his tongs.

"Containment Forms are work forms."

"Yes."

"Not combat forms. Not advancement forms." Lin recognized the recitation: he had read exclusion clauses to contractors in the same flat tone, watching for the flinch. Lin met his eyes.

"I suspected." Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

"Not a clever way for an outer disciple to win points while performing humility." Lin paused over that one, because it deserved a real answer.

"I hope not." The attendant studied him a while.

"Why, then?" Lin took out one of his copied slips—ink columns, copied symptoms, vocabulary rough enough to embarrass him—and held it where the man could see without handing it over, because paper near furnaces deserved caution.

"Old reports treat furnace-near strain, ash-mark symptoms, and containment delays as three unrelated problems. Ashen Breath shows me where heat stays after it should have left. I need to understand how attendants keep heat from spreading before it becomes injury. You're the only people on this mountain who do it daily and survive." The younger attendant snorted.

"We do it by moving before fools notice fire."

"Then teach me the moving part."

"It's also tiring."

"And boring," Gao Ren said, and then visibly wished to retrieve the word. The older attendant turned his head, and Gao Ren bowed so fast his sling shifted.

"This disciple means—outer disciples are told to seek more active refinement."

"Outer disciples are told many things by people standing farther from furnaces." The older attendant let that sit, then held out one scarred hand.

"Meng Jiao." It took Lin a moment to understand he was being given a name and not an order.

"Lin Zhihao."

"I know. Auditor Lin." Gao Ren made a sound and strangled it. Meng Jiao walked them to a square of packed ash near the vent wall, marked at its corners by four stones, the ash inside swept smooth and scored with shallow foot lines. Ink would have burned or smeared down here. The attendants drew their diagrams in the ash itself.

"Breath methods tell you what heat has done," Meng said.

"Containment Forms tell your body where heat is allowed to go before it decides for itself." He stepped into the square. Feet apart, knees soft, spine straight without stiffness, one hand low near the belly and the other angled outward as though holding an invisible door—and when the nearby vent coughed, his robe did not flutter. The rolling heat reached the line of his outward palm and turned, sliding along his flank and away.

Lin felt it happen in his own wrist, a pressure arriving and being politely redirected, like a visitor met at the gate.

"Was that qi?" Gao Ren asked.

"A little qi," Meng said.

"Mostly angle, breath, and knowing which part of you panics first."

"Panics?"

"Body panic. Shoulders rise. Chest locks. Breath jumps. Heat climbs—and then you call it will, and make it worse." Lin liked the sentence so much he wrote it down. Meng watched the brush with a long look.

"In ink? Here?"

"Away from the vent."

"The last outer disciple who copied forms near the vent lost two pages and half an eyebrow."

"Did the forms work?" Lin didn't look up from the slip.

"The eyebrow did not return." Gao Ren leaned toward Lin.

"I like him."

"He may still hit you with a broom." Meng pointed at the square.

"You. Stand." Lin stepped onto the marked ash, and the heat changed at once. In the training courts heat arrived because somebody wanted it. Here it arrived because work made it, pressing steadily off the vent wall, wrapping his ankles, gathering under his ribs where the old knot lived.

"Do not pull flame," Meng said.

"I wasn't."

"Your eyes were." Lin shut his mouth. Meng adjusted Lin's lead foot with the side of his own boot.

"Outer disciples stand like they expect heaven to be watching. Furnaces do not care about your silhouette. Knees." Lin bent them.

"Less surrender. More hinge. Outward hand lower—you are guarding your face. The heat is not dueling you." The next vent cough came soft, a breath of stored warmth, and Lin held the stance and reached reflexively for Ashen Breath—"No," Meng said.

"I do not mean stop breathing. I mean stop hiding inside the breath. Feel the stance first." Feeling the stance was harder. The breath gave him a script: inhale, observe, exhale, soften. The form gave him posture, angle, permission—and nowhere to retreat to. Heat touched his outward palm. His wrist wanted to lift. His ribs wanted to lock. His left calf braced too hard against nothing.

"There," Meng said.

"Rib." Lin's gaze snapped to him.

"Do not look surprised. Your side is doing enough of that for both of you." Gao Ren's humor faded.

"Bad?"

"Old," Meng said.

"Or repeated. Hard to say in one breath." Lin lowered the outward hand half a finger. Heat rolled against the palm, slipped along his arm—and caught behind the left ribs, and the catch was not sharp, which made it worse. Sharp pain announced itself. This was dull and familiar, the dullness of a body that had long ago decided a narrow route did not merit an announcement.

He exhaled through his teeth, and Meng said, "Now breath," and Ashen Breath opened the knot far enough for Lin to feel its actual edge for the first time. The rib channel was holding old heat and had shaped itself around the holding. An adaptation. A bad one, possibly—a body learning to survive by routing pressure through a place never built to carry it. And the body in question had been doing this since before Daniel Lin arrived in it. Meng stepped close and pressed two fingers to Lin's outer forearm.

"Do not send it to the wrist. The wrist is already stupid."

"It resents that."

"It can resent from the elbow. Down." Lin shifted the outward palm by half a finger-width, and the heat moved lower, wrist toward elbow, then stalled at the rib again, and his breath caught high—"Stop," Meng said, and Lin stopped, and the vent warmth faded, leaving his ribs hot, his wrist prickling, and his calf aching in pure sympathy. Meng stepped out of the square.

"Enough."

"I held one form."

"You held half of one form, badly, and found an old weak point. Take victory where it is small enough not to bite you." Gao Ren looked from Lin's ribs to his own sealed hand.

"Can I try?" Meng considered the blue seal.

"Keep the palm out of it. No outward catch. You can learn feet."

"Feet aren't impressive."

"Then they will suit you safely." The younger attendant laughed into a cloth. Gao Ren shot him a glare, then stepped into the square—and was terrible. He bent too deep, hiked his shoulder, twice nearly engaged the sealed hand despite instructions, and made two separate attempts to render the stance heroic, both of which Meng dismantled before either pose could finish forming. Lin watched from outside the stones while his ribs cooled, and understood what he was looking at.

Containment Forms would never be wanted by outer disciples. They made no flame leap and impressed no rail. What they did was teach a body where heat should travel when something went wrong—laying the route in advance, before panic could write its own. He copied the ash square's foot marks onto his slip, not as a diagram of glory but as a map of exactly where his weakness had surfaced, and at the bottom he wrote: Rib channel narrowed before current injury. Old route. Verify with minimal pressure only.

He read the entry back twice. How much of this body's history had been chosen, he wondered, and how much had simply been filed as choice afterward—and that thought he did not write down anywhere. Gao Ren stumbled out of the square sweating and offended.

"I hated that."

"Then you learned the correct amount," Meng said. The younger attendant—Sui, someone called him from across the yard, Sui, rack three —tossed Gao Ren a cloth.

"Feet again tomorrow."

"Tomorrow?"

"Your seal says three days. You can spend them standing badly here, or sitting sadly up there where people with working palms make noise at each other." Gao Ren wiped his neck.

"Are those my only options?"

"No," Sui said, already turning back to his rack.

"You could stand well." The yard absorbed the lesson back into its work without ceremony—a vent needed clearing, a cart had to move, someone shouted for fresh tongs and Meng went, because the lower furnace did not pause for insight. Lin liked that too. He tried the stance once more without any heat at all, only feet and breath, and the rib channel warmed from memory alone—which told him exactly enough, and he stopped there, before pride could talk him into a second attempt.

He touched his ribs once, lightly, and added the new entry to his growing list. Ash-mark symptoms. Furnace-near strain. Anchor delay. Batch heat. And now: rib-route weakness. The categories were beginning to look less like a mystery and more like the first crude bones of a method—nothing glorious, nothing anyone would shout about in the courts. Something that might keep a person standing when a room filled with heat. He folded the slip away and went to help Gao Ren fail at feet.
