I stood at the threshold of the fourth floor, the muzzle of my H&K USP pointed toward the floor, my eyes narrowing as I took in the chamber ahead. The narrow, frost-bitten corridors of the upper crypts were gone, replaced by a massive, vaulted hall constructed entirely of interlocking, dark iron gears and plates. Floor 4: The Clockwork Crypt Status: Locked (Puzzle Trigger Active)"Great," Mike muttered, stepping up beside me and slipping his daggers into their sheaths.
"Not a zombie in sight, which means the System is going to make us use our brains. I hate using my brain." As our entire team stepped into the room, a heavy grinding noise echoed from above. The massive iron door we had just walked through slammed shut, and a floating, glowing blue projection materialized over an altar in the center of the room. Beneath the projection, three large, stone dials rested on a pediment, each carved with cryptic, glowing runes.
[System Quest Triggered: The Weight of Justice] Condition: Align the alignment dials to match the historical scales, or the room will collapse in 10 minutes. Current Time Remaining: 09: 59... 09: 58...
"The historical scales?" Joe grunted, his heavy boots clanking against the iron floor plating as he walked toward the altar.
"What the hell does that mean? TJ's history?" I approached the stone pediment, my jaw tightening. I looked at the runes. They weren't high-fantasy symbols; as my Ranger tracking and analysis passives kicked in, the System translated the script into terms I knew all too well. Dial 1: THE FORCE SENT Dial 2: THE WEIGHT LEFT BEHIND Dial 3: THE CALL UNANSWERED"It's the night we broke into the precinct," I said quietly, my voice hollow in the massive metal room.
"The System isn't just testing our stats. It's mocking us. It's using TJ's memories of that night to build the puzzle logic."
"Derrick..." Sue said softly, placing a hand on the shoulder of my black wyvern leather armor.
"We don't have to let it get to us. We just need the numbers."
"Mike, check for traps on the dials," I commanded, forcing the emotion out of my chest.
"Erick, analyze the magical flow." Mike's eyes shimmered blue as he ran his fingers over the rim of the stone altar.
"Clean. No hidden needles or explosives on the dials themselves. But the floor plates? If we guess wrong, those gears above us are going to drop and turn us into modern art." Erick knelt by the base of the altar, tracing the glowing blue mana lines snaking out from the dials into the walls.
"The magical matrix is tied to a balancing formula. It's measuring a sequence. Look at the numbers hidden in the runic sub-text. The Force Sent is a static variable. Derrick, how many of you broke into the precinct that night?"
"Six," I said instantly.
"Joe and I, our blacksmith Pete, and Johnny, who was killed when we took over the school. I basically subdued Zack and Tony who were on duty when we hit the PD. I persuaded them to help me distract TJ so that I could gain access to the armory. That's when I taped him to his chair and left him locked in his office."
"Okay, spin the first dial to VI," Erick directed. Mike quickly stepped up, turning the heavy stone wheel until the rune for six locked in with a heavy thud. The blue lines on the altar flared brightly. Time Remaining: 06: 14...
"What about the second one? The Weight Left Behind," Joe asked, keeping his eyes on the ceiling as the gears groaned ominously.
"TJ," I said, a bitter taste in my mouth.
"We left one man behind. We duct-taped him to that chair." Mike spun the second dial to I. Another click echoed through the hall. The blue light turned a deep, warning purple. [System Warning] Alignment sequence 66% complete. Final variable required.
"The last one," Mike said, sweat dripping down his temple despite the freezing room.
"The Call Unanswered. Dad, what was the call?" I closed my eyes. Even though I wasn't responsible for the death of TJ's family—as TJ would have been in his office during the chaos regardless—I still felt a sharp twinge of guilt deep down.
"The call unanswered was TJ's wife and two daughters calling out for help when their house was hit and their lives were taken."
"Spin it to III!" Erick shouted. Mike grabbed the final stone dial, throwing his weight against it. The heavy wheel groaned, turning past the numbers until the rune for three aligned perfectly with the central marker. If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation. Time Remaining: 00: 12... 00: 11... The grinding gears above stopped instantly.
The oppressive purple light bleeding from the walls faded, snapping back into a soothing, golden triumph glow as the iron doors on the far side of the room slowly slid open into the dark. [Floor 4 Cleared. Loot Chest Generated.] Mike let out a long breath, wiping his forehead. He walked over to the silver-and-gold trimmed chest that popped out of the iron floor. He didn't even bother checking for traps; his passives confirmed the puzzle's completion neutralized the area's defenses.
"Hey, Erick," Mike said, popping the lid and pulling out a thick, shimmering sapphire-bound book.
"Looks like your magical tracking earned you the jackpot." [Loot Identified] 400x Gold Coins (Split applied) 5x High-Grade Mana Crystals 1x Magical Tome: [Tectonic Shift] (Earth Affinity - Elite Tier) Erick's eyes went wide as he took the tome.
"Tectonic Shift... this lets me manipulate the structural integrity of stone foundations. This is massive for crowd control." The book dissolved into light, integrating into his spell list.
"Keep moving," I said, my face stoic, though my hands shook slightly as I holstered my USP.
"The further down we go, the more personal this is going to get." The moment we crossed into the fifth floor, the ground beneath our feet ceased to be stone or iron. It was solid, slick black ice. The air was a living, howling gale of absolute zero wind that immediately began to tick down our stamina bars. Floor 5: The Maw of the Abyssal Frost Status: Active Defense (Extreme Environmental Hazard) [Environmental Warning: Continuous Frostbite Aura Active] Stamina drain increased by 50%. Mana regeneration halted.
"We can't stay here long!" Joe roared over the deafening scream of the sub-zero wind, holding his tower shield forward to break the gale for the team.
"The air is literally eating my mana!" I looked down the massive, cavernous chasm ahead. The only way across to the lower levels was a narrow, winding bridge of jagged ice, completely unprotected by handrails. To make matters worse, massive, razor-sharp icicles the size of minivans were breaking off the ceiling due to the intense wind, raining down onto the path like kinetic missiles.
"Derrick, my wyvern leather runes can't keep up with the dexterity calculation on this ice!" Mike yelled, his boots slipping as a gust of wind nearly took him off his feet.
"Everyone, lock into your armor runes! Use the strength and speed buffs to anchor your weight, but watch your meters!" I ordered. I activated my own dexterity runes, my black armor flaring with a faint violet aura. Immediately, my mana began to bleed—3 points every five seconds. We had to move.
"Go! Go! Go!" Joe bellowed, leading the charge. The descent was pure chaos. A massive icicle tore through the air, screaming down toward Sue. Joe lunged forward, triggering his newly upgraded Vanguard's Aegis shield buff. He slammed his tower shield upward, meeting the falling ice missile head-on. CRASH! The icicle shattered into a million lethal shards, but the sheer kinetic force cracked Joe's shield-arm armor, forcing his health bar down by 15%.
"Erick, clear the ceiling!" I shouted, drawing my bow and firing a Shadow-Stitched Arrow at a falling shard to deflect it away from Mike. Erick, his hands glowing white-hot as he burned through his remaining mana pool, slammed his palms against the black ice of the bridge.
"I can't use magma here, the thermal shock will shatter the bridge! I'm reinforcing the path!" [Skill Activated: Earth Meld (Apprentice 5)] Using his raw earth affinity, Erick forced a thick layer of dense granite to erupt from beneath the black ice, coating the treacherous bridge in coarse, rough stone that gave us instant, solid traction.
With our footing secured, we sprinted across the remaining stretch of the abyss, diving through the heavy stone archway of the Floor 5 exit just as a massive section of the cavern ceiling collapsed behind us, completely sealing the chasm off in a wall of thundering ice and rock. [Floor 5 Cleared. Halfway Point Reached.] [Rare Loot Chest Generated.] The howling wind died instantly as the heavy, enchanted doors drifted shut behind us, locking us into a small, well-lit stone anteroom that was blessedly warm.
The team collapsed against the walls, gasping for air. Joe let his tower shield clatter to the ground, his arm bruising and trembling from the impact of the ice missile. Sue immediately knelt beside him, her hands glowing with a soft, warm light as she began to cast her healing cleanses on his fractured arm. Mike sat on the floor, his back against the wall, staring at the ornate gold chest sitting in the center of the warm room.
"I'm not moving for at least twenty minutes," he panted.
"My mana is at ten percent."
"We rest here," I said, sliding down the stone wall. I focused on my left hand, tapping my gunmetal grey wedding band to interface with the dimensional storage pocket. With a thought, I pulled out a canteen of clean water and a dense sleeve of survival rations, passing them around to my exhausted team. Meanwhile, Mike lazily extended his left hand toward the gold chest, casting a tired Mage Hand to lift the heavy latch from across the room. The chest popped open with a soft, melodic chime. No traps.
The System was granting us a rare moment of respite. Inside the chest lay a wealth of supplies designed specifically for a battered team at the halfway mark. [Loot Identified] 1, 000x Gold Coins (Split applied) 10x High-Grade Mana Crystals 1x Vanguard's Reinforced Pauldrons (Rare Tier Plate Armor) 1x Magical Tome: [Shadow Camouflage] (Shadow Affinity - Elite Tier) Mike smirked, looking over at me as the dark, misty tome floated out of the chest.
"Looks like the System noticed you pulling my ass out of the wind back there, Dad. This one's yours." I took the tome, the book dissolving into my interface as a wave of cold, comforting shadow magic integrated into my Ranger skill tree. Joe cracked open a ration pack, his arm completely knit back together by Sue's magic, and looked at the dark staircase leading down to Floor 6.
"Five more floors. The bastard is waiting for us at the bottom." I took a slow sip of water, my eyes reflecting the dim golden light of the anteroom. My status bar was slowly ticking back up to full, but the heavy weight in my chest had nothing to do with stats.
"Let him wait. We'll be ready."
