The heavy oak door to our second-story master suite swung open with a soft click. Denise stepped through, wiping her hands on a fresh towel, her face a mix of absolute awe and sheer exhaustion. She stopped dead in the center of our sprawling, stone-carved living room, looking around at the rich hardwood floors and the glowing geometric hearth before her eyes settled on me, where I stood looking out the panoramic window.
"Derrick," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"The kitchens... the apartment... the whole damn campus. I went to open the freezer and ended up standing in a stone vault the size of a grocery store. What did you do?" I turned from the window, a tired but proud smile crossing my face. I walked over, wrapping my arms around her waist.
"I bonded the second core and slotted the high-grade crystals. We aren't a hamlet anymore, Denise. The system officially recognizes Novus as a town. We have double walls now, real stone houses for the people outside, and enough fortified defense to—" Before I could finish the sentence, the air inside the room grew impossibly heavy. The twin ambient hums of the sky-blue and dark-violet cores deep in the building's foundations suddenly spiked, vibrating violently through the soles of our boots.
A harsh, crimson-bordered system window slammed into my vision, flashing with an ominous, rhythmic strobe. Simultaneously, the exact same warning projected itself into the mind of every single citizen within the half-mile perimeter of Novus. [WARNING: WORLD ANOMALY DETECTED] Settlement: 'Novus' has achieved Parallel Core Integration within a Tier-1 Zone. Protocol: System Protocol 44-Alpha Triggered: Sovereign Trial.
[ALERT: REGIONAL DUNGEON BREAK IMMINENT] The untamed mana of the surrounding wilderness has violently reacted to the dual-core nexus. A localized Tier-2 Calamity Core is forming three miles East. [SCENARIO: MONSTER HORDE SIEGE] Objective: Defend the Core Terminal. Subdue the Calamity Core. Time until Wave 1: 48 Hours. Note: Successful defense will permanently bind and pacify the Calamity Core, converting it into a local Training Dungeon. Failure will result in total settlement reclamation. My blood ran cold.
Forty-eight hours. The system wasn't going to let us enjoy our victory. It was testing us. If we survived, we'd gain a permanent training ground for the town, but the cost was going to be paid in blood.
"Derrick..." Denise whispered, her eyes wide as she read her own notification.
"A dungeon break? Forty-eight hours?"
"We can handle it," I said, my voice instantly dropping into my calm, hard commander's tone.
"We have the twenty-five-foot walls, the new firing ranges, and—" If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it. The sharp, urgent crackle of my tactical radio interrupted me, shattering the quiet of the room. It was Zack's voice, tight, tense, and signaling trouble.
"Mayor, we've got a situation at the new outer northern portcullis. You need to get down here right now, and you might want to bring some back-up." I unclipped the radio.
"Talk to me, Zack. Is it the horde early?"
"Negative, boss. They're not monsters. We've got a convoy. Four military-grade Humvees just rolled up to the new wall. They're armed, and the guy in the lead vehicle is demanding to speak to whoever is in charge. He's claiming he's the rightful authority." My brows furrowed.
"Copy that. Alert Joe, Mike, Erick and Sue. Meet me at the gate in five." Ten minutes later, I stood atop the newly formed, fifteen-foot crenelated outer stone wall, flanked by my core dungeon team. Below us, idling in the dirt just outside the massive iron portcullis, were four olive-drab military Humvees. A dozen men in full combat gear and camouflage uniforms stood alongside the vehicles, holding standard-issue rifles. They looked disciplined, alert, and entirely human—remnants of a local Army Reserve unit.
But it wasn't the soldiers that caught my attention. Standing at the front of the convoy, flanked by two armed guards, was a man in a pristine, tailored suit that looked absurdly out of place in the apocalypse. He was older, with slicked-back gray hair and a smug, practiced politician's smile. I stared down, my eyes narrowing as recognition clicked. It was Thomas Caldwell. The old city mayor.
An absolutely corrupt, self-serving piece of shit who had spent years lining his pockets with construction kickbacks before the system fell. When the world ended, he had fled with a security detail, leaving the citizens to rot. Now, he was back. Caldwell cupped his hands around his mouth, shouting up at the battlements.
"Hello up there! I am Mayor Thomas Caldwell, the duly elected official of this district! We are here under the authority of the United States government to retake society, catalog resources, and bring peace and order back to this sector! Open these gates immediately so we can establish a proper command post!" I exchanged a grim look with Joe, who just shook his head in disgust.
The soldiers behind Caldwell looked sincere—good men and women who genuinely believed they were doing their civic duty by following a surviving elected official. They had no idea they were being used as muscle for a tyrant's power grab. I stepped forward, resting my hands on the stone battlements, looking down at the wolves at my gate. Behind me, a Tier-2 monster horde was closing in. Before me, the old world was knocking on my door, demanding to take everything we had bled to build.
I keyed my radio, my voice echoing cold and flat over the walls.
"Zack. Tell the guard squads to lock down the battlements and prime the ballistas. Nobody opens that gate." [END OF BOOK 1]
