Anna's suggestion was, it had to be said, extremely practical. It solved the problem of too few monsters in the Dragon's Nest while simultaneously increasing species diversity. As more and more monsters came under the influence of Dragon Aura, the reproductive barriers between species would gradually erode. For now, Blaze Rabbits could only breed with other rabbit-type monsters like Whirlwind Rabbits. But that was a start. Lower-tier monsters also grew fast.
Kobolds, for instance, went from egg to combat-ready in a single month. Blackwater Pythons and Blaze Rabbits were even quicker.
"Anna." Su Nian brushed his soft dragon wing across the top of her head, his expression genuinely puzzled.
"How did you even come up with this?"
"That, um..." Anna's face went pink. She stole a quick glance at the Black Dragon, then looked away, shy as a freshly ripened apple, the kind that made a dragon want to take a bite. It was a little embarrassing to say out loud, but she didn't want to keep anything from the dragon she loved. So she fidgeted. Hesitated. Then finally leaned up toward his ear and murmured:"Because... in Brother's storybook collection, Anna read one that had...
there was a part where an evil dragon crashes a wedding and steals the prince's princess..."
"And then... and then the prince leads his whole army to the Dragon's Nest, and when he gets there, he finds the evil dragon and the princess already... already doing that..."
"And the prince is absolutely furious but still can't beat the evil dragon, so he has to flee in disgrace..."
"And when the prince finally endures all that humiliation, trains until he becomes a Legendary Knight, and returns to the Dragon's Nest..."
"The evil dragon and the princess already have over a hundred children." Good grief. Su Nian stared at her, dumbfounded. What kind of deranged plot was that? Was this something a carbon-based lifeform was actually capable of writing? His treasure chest of storybooks contained quite a few titles looted off human soldiers. He hadn't gotten around to reading most of them.
But if he remembered correctly, the one Anna had just described was called something like: On the Wedding Day, the Tyrannical Evil Dragon Comes to Snatch the Bride. He'd read the first page and put it down. Too vulgar. He hadn't imagined the plot could get even worse from there. Anna, seeing him frozen in place, assumed he hadn't quite followed. So, very helpfully, she summarized.
"So after reading that storybook, Anna realized something important!"
"Only the strong deserve mates!"
"Anna is going to work hard and get stronger, and then permanently monopolize Brother, and chase away every other female dragon!" Love what you're reading? Discover and support the author on the platform they originally published on.
"If any female dragon schemes to steal Brother away, Anna will leave her with a head full of lumps!!" Was this what his little treasure's possessiveness looked like? Su Nian found it deeply satisfying. He turned to his followers.
"You all heard that. What do you think of Anna's idea? Want to head into the Silvermoon Mountains and do a little... mingling with other tribes?" This kind of mingling could technically be forced. But forced arrangements only went so far on the surface. Still, Su Nian wasn't particularly worried. What monster these days would really object to a few extra wives?
"Uh..." Polikli and Grey Wolf exchanged a glance. This so-called "mingling" was just raiding other tribes for their females, wasn't it? Truly worthy of their master and mistress. Beautifully wicked.
"Great Master!" Polikli flopped onto the ground, tail wagging furiously, face arranged in the most devoted expression he could manage.
"Your will shines like the stars above — we shall follow it with our lives!"
"That said... there may not be any Kobold or gnoll tribes left in the deeper parts of the Silvermoon Mountains. We're humanoid-type monsters. There aren't many of us around."
"That is a problem." Su Nian nodded, though he wasn't losing sleep over it. The Silvermoon Mountains were enormous. There could easily be larger Kobold or gnoll tribes he hadn't found yet. And if not, well, there were always similar humanoid monster tribes. A little variety never hurt anyone. Call it an exotic experience.
"Don't worry," Su Nian said, patting Polikli's despondent head.
"I'll find you someone to settle down with." He straightened and raised his voice.
"All monsters, fall in. We're moving into the outer layer of the Silvermoon Mountains — now."
For the monsters living in the outer reaches of the Silvermoon Mountains, that night would not be forgotten anytime soon. The sky was clear. The forest was silent. And then the evil Black Dragon crept in with his followers, quiet as a shadow. The first victims were the Whirlwind Rabbits. They were a notch above Blaze Rabbits in strength, not by much, but enough to matter.
Their survival strategy was simple and effective: their oversized ears worked like wings, catching air and letting their small bodies glide rapidly at low altitude. It was enough to outrun most predators. It was not enough to outrun Bugs Bunny.
"Squeak squeak squeak!" [Hehehe... easy now, little rabbit. No need to panic. I just want to borrow a female.] Bugs Bunny stood over a sleeping nest with a large vine-woven net in his fist. The net already contained one female Whirlwind Rabbit, scooped straight out of her bed without warning.
"Chirp!" The Whirlwind Rabbit shrieked. She recognized what he was, a Blaze Rabbit, her species' closest relative. But she had never seen one like this. He was enormous. Muscular. Standing next to him, she was about the size of a teacup. Had these Blaze Rabbits gone through some kind of freak evolution?!
"Hehehe..." Bugs Bunny smiled, not a friendly smile, and tied a neat knot around her. Then he tossed her into the basket strapped to his back. Inside, four other female Whirlwind Rabbits already sat wide-eyed with terror. The same scene played out across the whole area. Male Whirlwind Rabbits jolted awake to find their mates simply gone, the warm weight in their arms vanished, carried off by the furry hands of an enormous muscle-rabbit while they slept.
"Squeak! Chirp chirp!" [Give her back!] One male Whirlwind Rabbit had blood in his heart. He'd watched his mate get hauled away by a massive Blaze Rabbit with red-glowing eyes, and the sight shattered every shred of his restraint. He charged. His great ears fanned open and he surged forward, a violent wind blade condensing in his mouth as he closed the distance. He had full confidence in this technique. That confidence was built from every predator he'd ever killed.
And right now, with all his fury poured into it, this blade would rip his enemy apart. A large, furry hand reached out and closed around his snout. The wind blade detonated inside his own mouth. He screamed. Blood filled his teeth. Then, crack, a hard slap connected. The world spun. His frail body bounced and rolled across the ground, twelve, thirteen times, before slamming into a tree trunk. Pain exploded through every inch of him and wrung a thin, wretched whimper from his throat.
"Squeak..." [Bastard... she was mine...] The double blow — physical and otherwise, was too much. His eyes rolled back. He went limp. The only thing missing from this scene to complete the picture was a loli. ➤ Next: Do You Desire Power?
