It was midsummer. The air was hot and thick, and with rain on the way, the atmosphere was practically suffocating. In heat like this, food spoils fast. The fermentation of the Shit Bombs was like a loli in battle-damaged stockings, it hit like a critical strike and accelerated at the same time. That smell spread instantly, and every monster within range found themselves involuntarily wincing. Keep in mind: these were monsters. Their tolerance for foul odors was, by nature, extraordinary.
When a stench is powerful enough to make hardened monsters flinch and grimace in unison, you can only imagine the catastrophic horror already fermenting inside that leather bag. Banana Wolf expertly stuffed two cloth strips into his own nostrils, then, with great consideration, stuffed two into Grey Wolf's as well.
"Boss, what about us?" Grey Wolf gave Banana Wolf a firm nod. He reached into his baggy shorts and pulled out a cloth strip. On it, in crooked Draconic script, were the following words: [In siege warfare, storming the walls is the worst strategy. Forcing the enemy to come out and fight is the best. Throw shit at them, it'll lure them out.] Grey Wolf read it aloud to Banana Wolf and the assembled monsters. The entire group experienced a collective epiphany.
Their admiration for the Black Dragon Boss deepened considerably. Even casual wisdom, casually imparted, had a use right now. It was as if the Boss had foreseen this exact situation long in advance.
"Banana Wolf, are there more — Shit Bombs?" Grey Wolf glanced at the bags on the ground. A few hundred rounds' worth. Clearly not enough.
"Report. Breeding room — feeding, Spurt Grass."
"More Shit Bombs — transporting!"
"Good!" Grey Wolf nodded his wolf head and turned his gaze toward the Starter Village. His savage jaws stretched wide in a vicious grin. He gave the order.
"Gloves on. Begin, bomb throw!"
"ROAR!" The Gnolls howled in unison. They yanked on the pre-prepared gloves and nose plugs, plunged their hands into the bags, and came out holding several golden, glistening Shit Bombs. They didn't hesitate. They didn't even look at what was in their hands. Arms swung in full circles, and the bombs sailed toward the Starter Village. In moments, dozens of baseball-sized Shit Bombs were airborne. They spun. They tumbled. They whistled through the air, and with great ceremony, they descended upon Sakura Island No.
1 Starter Village.
"Yamaguchi-kun, what's that?" A player squinted at the expanding spheres in the sky.
"Don't tell me these monsters think they can destroy our Starter Village by throwing mud balls at us." Unauthorized content usage: if you discover this narrative on Amazon, report the violation.
"Pathetic. Truly lowly creatures. Without profound knowledge to guide them, they can only embarrass themselves." The players murmured and laughed among themselves. None of them noticed Mori Yama Yaren's nose twitching, or the color draining from his face. He knew that smell. Oh, he knew that smell. This was, the monsters' secret-recipe Shit Bombs!
"Young Master, move! TERRIBLE DANGER!" Mori Yama Yaren bellowed. The Shit Bombs were closing fast, and Yamaguchi Mura Chicken was frozen like a mannequin. Panic seized him. No time for master-servant protocol. He launched himself forward, grabbed Yamaguchi Mura Chicken, and threw them both to the side.
"Young Master, don't be afraid! I will protect you!" He said it with a smile, lifting his head, eyes shining like stars. Yamaguchi Mura Chicken's face had gone corpse-white. He slapped frantically at Mori Yama Yaren's broad body, trying to shove him away.
"Young Master?"
"Get OFF me, NOW!" Pinned under Mori Yama Yaren's weight, Yamaguchi Mura Chicken couldn't move. A spherical object was hurtling toward them at a vicious angle, getting larger by the second. He already knew what it was. The stench had arrived before it did, silent and swift as wind.
"Mm..." He didn't dodge it. A baseball-sized Shit Bomb drove directly into his open mouth. Yamaguchi Mura Chicken's pupils contracted. In the darkening sky above, he experienced a vision, his most revered Emperor and his most beloved childhood friend, engaged in something deeply, profoundly, unspeakable. It could not have been more disgusting.
"BLEURGH!" He sprayed it all over Mori Yama Yaren's face. This triggered a chain reaction. Mori Yama Yaren began retching immediately, and covered Yamaguchi Mura Chicken right back. In that moment, master and servant achieved something rare: a perfect, intimate, deeply heartfelt exchange. This was only the beginning of the suffering, and Yamaguchi Mura Chicken was far from the only victim. More Shit Bombs had been hauled to the front lines by sprinting spear pigs.
Under the Gnolls' relentless throws, the projectiles rained down across the entire Starter Village. A dense swarm of Shit Bombs filled the sky. BOOM! Thunder cracked overhead. A jagged bolt of lightning split the sky. The rainstorm hit. Raindrops the size of pinky fingers hammered down, washing over the Sakura Island players and their coating. It didn't help. If anything, it made things worse, the rain dissolved the Shit Bombs smeared across their faces and carried the mess to every corner of their bodies.
"Banana leaves, cover them!" At Grey Wolf's command, a group of monsters rushed forward with enormous banana leaves and draped them over the bags of Shit Bombs.
"Continue, throwing!" WHOOSH WHOOSH WHOOSH...... Between the Shit Bomb barrage and the hammering rain, the players lost all appetite for a counterattack. They retreated inside the houses with fury and humiliation, enduring the stench in silence, waiting for the monsters to exhaust their biochemical arsenal and for the rain to stop before going out to settle the score.... Meanwhile. Beneath Sakura Island No. 1 Starter Village.
"Chief, it's raining outside!" A Kobold sniffed the air, catching the distinctive earthy-metallic scent of rain. It didn't slow its digging, just tossed the observation over its shoulder to Kobold Chief Bolikeli.
"I know it's raining. Keep digging, pick up the pace. It's a shower, won't last. I'll check the tunnel entrance." Bolikeli turned and walked toward the entrance without another word. Some water had already seeped in, but Bolikeli wasn't worried. Digging tunnels through dangerous terrain was basic competency for Kobolds. Conditions that would send humans into a panic were, for them, barely worth remarking on. Ignorance was its own kind of comedy.
By the time Bolikeli reached the entrance, the Kobolds who'd noticed the rain had already thrown up a simple waterproof barrier. Banana leaves covered the opening. Soft sections of the tunnel walls had been reinforced with packed special material. This tunnel was temporary, it would be torn apart when they were done with it. Bolikeli hadn't demanded perfection. Outside, the players had all retreated indoors. Grey Wolf had expected as much. The great master's foresight was, as always, uncanny.
Grey Wolf felt a swell of sincere admiration. Before falling into slumber, the Black Dragon had handed it two attack plans. Plan A had gone as well as it had gone. That meant it was time for Plan B. And right on cue, Kobold Chief Bolikeli stepped up beside it.
"Now, situation, how?" Grey Wolf fixed its gaze on Bolikeli, a hint of anticipation in its eyes.
"The tunnel has been dug beneath the human village. We're already expanding the hollow area."
"The soil layer here is loose. With our Kobold racial talent, roughly one more hour before full preparations are complete." Grey Wolf looked up at the sky. The shower was easing off. But the dark clouds still swallowed the horizon. The drizzle would hold for a while yet. A heaven-sent opportunity. The plan was viable. ➤ Next: The Great Shit Disturbance
