The deeper the Vanguard descended into the subterranean cyber-hubs beneath Mantle, the more oppressive the atmosphere became. The vibrant, flashing cyan lights of the upper server banks slowly gave way to a dim, flickering gloom. Thick layers of ancient permafrost coated the walls, and the ambient hum of the cooling systems sounded like a low, dying breath. Clover Ebi held a hand up, his lucky clover pin catching the faint light from the servers.
He unhooked Kingfisher from his belt, his eyes scanning the shadowed, icy ravines ahead.
"Stay sharp, everyone," Clover warned, his voice a low, echoing murmur.
"The network interference is reaching its peak just a few hundred yards ahead. The deeper we go into a jammed sector, the higher the probability that stronger, older Grimm have nested there. And remember, that second Geist is still unaccounted for."
"We will maintain our perimeter," Vine Zeki added quietly, his pale hands glowing faintly with his Aura.
"But do not let the cold distract your focus. The shadows here are dense."
"We've got it," Ruby Rose affirmed, gripping the shaft of Crescent Rose tightly, her silver eyes darting across the frozen architecture. For the next several minutes, the group navigated the winding, treacherous path in absolute silence. The only sounds were the crunch of their boots on the frost and the distant drip of melting ice. They were closing in on the deepest point of the subterranean facility.
However, as they neared the glowing red terminal that marked the source of the network blockade, a strange, suffocating sensation began to creep into the cavern. It didn't start as fear. It started as a profound, heavy lethargy. Yang Xiao Long stumbled, her boot catching on a slightly raised metal grate. She caught herself, but a heavy, uncharacteristic groan escaped her lips. Her arms, clad in the golden metal of Ember Celica, suddenly felt as though they weighed a thousand pounds.
"Ugh... is it just me, or did someone crank up the gravity in here? I feel like I just went ten matches with Saitama," Yang muttered, rolling her shoulders sluggishly.
"It's not just you," Weiss Schnee panted softly, leaning heavily on Myrtenaster like a walking cane. Her pale face was flushed, her eyelids fluttering as if she had just stayed awake for three days straight.
"My legs... they feel like lead. I can barely lift my boots." Qrow Branwen dragged a hand down his face, his crimson eyes bloodshot and heavy. He leaned against the icy wall, taking a slow, shaky breath.
"This isn't normal fatigue. Something is draining us."
"Is it a localized Dust leak? Or a drop in temperature?" Elm Ederne questioned, her massive hammer suddenly dragging against the floorboards as her muscular arms trembled with weakness. Blake Belladonna fought through the thick, mental fog. She reached into her pocket with shaking fingers, pulling out her newly upgraded Scroll. She activated the holographic display, her amber eyes squinting at the biometric readings. The four meters displayed on the screen: B, R, W, and Y, were glowing a healthy green.
"No..." Blake whispered, sheer confusion lacing her tired voice.
"Our Aura levels... they're completely stable. We're all sitting between seventy and eighty percent."
"We aren't sustaining any physical or spiritual damage. So why..." Ruby muttered with a weakened tone.
"Why... do I feel like... giving up? The sensation compounded with terrifying speed. It was a suffocating, invisible weight pressing directly against their minds. The vibrant, fierce determination that had carried them through the harsh tundra of Solitas was simply evaporating, replaced by a hollow, crushing apathy. Harriet Bree dropped to one knee, her speed-oriented exoskeleton buzzing uselessly as she stared blankly at the ice.
"What's the point? There's always going to be another blockade... another fight..."
"Maybe we should just... rest for a minute," Marrow Amin mumbled, his Faunus tail drooping completely limp as he slumped against a frozen server rack, his boomerang rifle sliding from his grip.
"We can't... we have to... fix... the network..." Ruby started, but her voice trailed off. Even the physical endurance she had built through months of training couldn't combat the psychological drain. Ruby's knees buckled, and she collapsed heavily onto the frost-covered grating. Within seconds, the entire group, the elite Ace-Ops, the battle-hardened Huntresses and the veteran Huntsman, were brought to their knees. Their consciousness began to fade, their weapons slipping from their numb fingers.
The glowing red terminal was just several meters away, but the distance felt like an insurmountable ocean. They simply didn't have the will to cross it.
"Friends? What is wrong?" A bright, mechanical voice cut cleanly through the suffocating gloom. Penny Polendina hovered effortlessly a few feet above the ground. The android looked around at the collapsed Vanguard in complete bewilderment. Her glowing green eyes scanned their faces, registering their dropping heart rates and extreme lethargy.
"You must stand up! We are so close to the objective!" Penny encouraged, landing gracefully on the ice. She reached out, gently shaking Ruby's shoulder.
"Ruby? Please, you cannot sleep here! It is far too cold!"
"Penny..." Ruby slurred, her silver eyes half-closed.
"So tired... can't..." Penny's synthetic brow furrowed. Her internal processors shifted instantly from social interaction to high-level threat assessment. Her optical sensors whirred, shifting into thermal and Aura-detection modes as she scanned the deep, pitch-black crevices of the cavern. Her eyes locked onto a cluster of shadows near the ceiling.
"Hostiles detected!" Penny announced. Without a microsecond of hesitation, the halo of floating swords behind her back locked into a forward array. A brilliant, emerald green laser erupted from the blades, piercing the darkness and striking the stalactites above. SKREEEEEEEEE!!! A horrifying, unnatural screech echoed through the cavern, jolting the lethargic Huntsmen. From the shadows, a creature dropped to the ice. It was a tall, unnervingly thin humanoid Grimm.
Its arms were grotesquely long, dragging its clawed fingers along the ground. Its face was a terrifying, hollow skull, entirely lacking nostrils, with a low-hanging, slack jaw that emitted a low, bone-chilling moan.
"By the Gods..." Clover gasped, forcing his head up. His professional composure shattered as his eyes widened in horror.
"An Apathy!" As if responding to the name, the shadows of the cyber-hub began to writhe. If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it's taken without permission from the author. Report it. One by one, dozens of the skeletal, long-armed Grimm stepped out from behind the server banks. They moved with a slow, shambling, zombie-like gait, encircling the collapsed Huntsmen. They stared directly at the group, and the eye contact made the psychological drain infinitely worse.
"Apathy?" Qrow groaned, trying desperately to lift Harbinger.
"They are a rare, highly dangerous variant of Grimm," Marrow explained, his voice thick with exhaustion as he struggled to keep his eyes open.
"They don't attack physically at first. They project a psychic field. They feed on and amplify negative emotions... depression, fear, and hesitation. They completely drain your willpower to live."
"The missing tech units... The soldiers General Ironwood sent down here weeks ago... So those things were the ones who responsible..." Harriet grit her teeth, the puzzle pieces clicking together in her sluggish mind.
"They didn't find any signs of a struggle. The Apathy drained them until they just... fell asleep and died." The surviving soldiers had never reported them because the few who managed to escape had fled before the Apathy ever revealed themselves, driven away by the overwhelming, localized dread.
"There are too many of them," Weiss whispered, her eyelids fluttering shut.
"We're looking right at them... the effect is too strong..."
"Do not worry! I will protect you!" Penny declared cheerfully. While the biological humans and Faunus were entirely paralyzed by the psychological dampening, the android was completely, fundamentally immune. As a synthetic being powered by an Aura-generating core, Penny possessed a soul, but she lacked the biological, neurological chemistry required to process despair, depression, or physical fatigue in the same manner as a human.
Her core programming and incredibly bright, amiable personality operated entirely independently of the Apathy's psychic field. General Ironwood had not explicitly known the Apathy were here, but his tactical foresight in assigning his tireless, synthetic protector to the subterranean mission had just saved their lives. Penny engaged her thrusters. She flew directly into the horde of skeletal monsters, her swords moving in a blinding, emerald blur.
She sliced through three Apathys in a single, fluid arc, her laser blasts incinerating several more.
"Salutations, Grimm!" Penny beamed, completely unaffected by their horrifying screeches. As Penny actively destroyed the creatures, the oppressive, suffocating psychic field in the cavern noticeably weakened.
"The... the pressure is lifting," Blake gasped, her amber eyes snapping open.
"Get up!" Yang roared, using the momentary reprieve to force herself onto one knee, grabbing Ember Celica. Qrow, the Ace-Ops, and Team RWBY began to push themselves back to their feet, their willpower slowly trickling back into their veins as Penny continued her relentless, cheerful slaughter of the monsters.
"Thank the Gods for Penny," Ruby panted, gripping her scythe as the strength returned to her legs. However, the cavern violently trembled. A massive chunk of the ice ceiling directly above Penny exploded. The second, unaccounted-for Geist dropped into the fray. It had bonded with the surrounding boulders and permafrost, forming a regular Petra Gigas. While it lacked the volatile Gravity Dust of its frosted predecessor, its sudden, massive presence was a devastating distraction.
The Petra Gigas swung a colossal stone fist, striking Penny mid-air.
"Ah!" Penny cried out as she was swatted out of the sky, crashing heavily into a nearby server bank. With Penny temporarily overwhelmed and engaged in a brutal melee with the rock monster, she could no longer cull the Apathy horde. Realizing their only threat was distracted, the remaining army of Apathys turned their hollow, skull-like faces back toward the Huntsmen. They opened their slack jaws, letting out a synchronized, mournful, absolutely horrifying sonic screech. SKREEEEEEE!!!
The discordant, soul-shredding frequency tore through the Huntsmen's eardrums and burrowed directly into their nervous systems. It wasn't just a passive drain anymore. It was an aggressive, concentrated wave of pure despair. It violently ripped away all hope, motivation, and physical energy in a single, catastrophic pulse.
"GAAAAH!" Qrow screamed, dropping his scythe entirely and clutching his ears as he crashed to the floor.
"Make it stop!" Elm whimpered, her massive frame trembling as she curled into a fetal position on the ice. The effect was devastating. Team RWBY, Qrow, and the Ace-Ops collapsed entirely. The will to fight, the will to move, the will to even breathe, was violently ripped from their minds. The horde of Apathy began to shamble forward, their long, dragging claws reaching out to claim the sleeping prey. Ruby lay on the ice, her vision swimming in total darkness.
Crescent Rose lay inches from her hand, but it felt like it weighed a million tons. The cold was seeping into her bones. It would be so easy to just close her eyes. To just let go.
'It is the desire to preserve life which fuels the light inside you.' Maria's raspy, guiding voice echoed from the deepest recesses of Ruby's fading consciousness. I... want to protect them... Ruby thought, her mind fighting desperately against the suffocating void. I have to protect them all! Ruby squeezed her eyes shut. She bypassed the fear and the apathy, diving deep into the anchor of her own soul. She remembered the grueling, hilarious mornings in the Beacon Academy.
She pictured Saitama standing in the center of the arena, casually picking his nose with a deadpan expression while she, Yang, Weiss, and Blake unleashed their ultimate, explosive combination attacks against his invincible chest. The sheer, ridiculous reality that they were trained by a god who complained about grocery prices. She remembered the burning, tilted deck of the Atlesian airship in the dreamscape.
Reaching her hand out through the flames, offering peace to Neopolitan, and watching the mute thief's hateful glare melt into a tearful, genuine acceptance. She remembered sitting in the red-lit cabin of the Argus Limited. Laughing alongside her team, Jaune, Pyrrha, Nora, Ren, and Oscar. While Saitama sat in his black dress suit and white trench coat, entirely oblivious to the world beneath Roman Torchwick's bowler hat, with Neo smirking comfortably beside him.
The profound, beautiful warmth of their makeshift, bizarre family. She remembered Harriet teaching her how to shatter her rose petals, Marrow guiding Weiss, Elm pushing Yang, and Vine elevating Blake. The absolute, unyielding camaraderie of the Huntsmen who were currently suffering beside her. And finally, she pictured the snowy street in Mantle just hours ago. She remembered the blinding green light, and the sheer, overwhelming joy of seeing Penny Polendina alive.
She remembered Pyrrha falling to her knees in tears, and Penny pulling the Spartan into an incredibly warm, forgiving embrace. Ruby remembered the light. She remembered why she wanted to live, and why she wanted her friends to live with her. A faint, ethereal warmth bloomed in her chest, pushing back the unnatural cold of the Apathy's screech. A brilliant, blinding silver light began to glow beneath her closed eyelids. Ruby snapped her eyes open.
"GET AWAY FROM THEM!" A massive, apocalyptic dome of pure, divine white light erupted from Ruby Rose's silver eyes. The divine light expanded outward with the force of a detonating sun, completely engulfing the pitch-black subterranean cavern. The light washed over Yang, Weiss, Blake, Qrow, and the Ace-Ops, instantly purging the psychic poison from their minds and replacing it with a surge of undeniable warmth. The light slammed into the horde of Apathy and the towering Petra Gigas.
The monsters didn't even have time to shriek. The divine power of preservation struck their dark, destructive forms. Their leathery skin, shadowy masses, and rocky armor rapidly calcified, turning stark, petrified gray. The transformation swept through the entire cavern, freezing the Apathy mid-stride and turning the massive Geist into a towering statue of solid, immobile stone. The blinding light slowly retracted back into Ruby's eyes.
The cavern was completely silent, filled entirely with petrified statues of the nightmares.
"Now!" Clover yelled, his willpower entirely restored. The Ace-Ops and Penny didn't hesitate. With swift, coordinated precision, they surged forward, their weapons shattering the petrified Apathy and the stone Petra Gigas into harmless, gray dust, completely clearing the cavern in seconds. Ruby swayed slightly on her feet, the sheer toll of the magical output draining her stamina, but she didn't fall unconscious like she had in Argus. She stumbled backward, catching her balance on the shaft of Crescent Rose.
Before she could slip, Qrow was there. The veteran Huntsman caught his niece securely by the shoulders, lowering her gently to a sitting position on the frost. Yang, Weiss, and Blake instantly rushed to her side, their faces pale but their eyes bright with relief.
"Ruby!" Yang gasped, kneeling beside her sister and grabbing her hand.
"I'm okay," Ruby breathed heavily, offering a weak, exhausted, but incredibly triumphant thumbs-up to her team and her uncle.
"I'm okay. Just... a little dizzy."
"You did it," Blake whispered, her amber eyes wide with profound gratitude.
"Compared to the Leviathan in Argus..." Ruby let out a soft, tired laugh, wiping sweat from her brow.
"... that was actually a lot easier." Qrow let out a massive, shuddering sigh of relief, ruffling Ruby's dark red hair with a proud, affectionate smile.
"You did good, kid. You did real good." Across the cavern, Penny flew over, her eyes glowing with absolute awe. Clover, Harriet, Marrow, Elm, and Vine walked over to the group. They looked at the dissipating gray dust of the monsters, and then turned their gazes toward the tiny, red-hooded girl sitting on the ice.
"By the Gods..." Clover breathed, his professional demeanor entirely shattered by sheer, mythological reverence.
"The flash... the petrification..."
"She's a Silver-Eyed Warrior," Vine stated softly, his serene voice laced with profound respect.
"I thought they were just legends," Elm gasped, her jaw hanging slightly open.
"That was amazing!" Harriet grinned, crossing her arms with a newfound, immense respect for the young leader. Penny bounded over, completely ignoring the stone dust. She practically vibrated with excitement, clasping her hands together.
"Ruby! That was absolutely sensational! Your optical output is a marvel of biological engineering!" Ruby blushed brightly, laughing shyly at the praise. With the threat entirely neutralized, Clover walked over to the glowing red terminal at the back of the room. He pulled a specialized decryption drive from his belt, provided by Ironwood's tech units, and slotted it into the server. The terminal blinked.
The harsh red warning lights shifted, flooding the icy cavern with a warm, stable blue glow as the network blockades were systematically purged from the system. Clover tapped his earpiece, the comms-link buzzing to life with crystal-clear reception.
"Atlas Control, this is Clover," the Ace-Ops leader announced, a triumphant, satisfied smile on his face as he looked back at the exhausted but victorious Huntsmen.
"Mission accomplished."
