Elios sat silently looking at the box sitting on his desk. He didn't need to open it to know it was the piece he needed to finish putting the teleport back together. The only question he had was whether or not to do it. If I finish putting that stupid machine back together, Hardscrabble looks like the hero, he thought, mulling over all the possibilities. If I don't put it back together and Hardscrabble or Mordak find out I sat on it? Well, that… that would be signing my death warrant.
He sighed loudly as he picked up the box and turned it around in his hands before the shipping label caught his attention. He snickered as he read it out loud.
"Deliver to Jasper Hardscrabble Only." He looked around the lab, checking for anyone who may be watching. These days, eyes were everywhere. He knew he had to be careful. Can I pull it off without being caught, though? he asked himself. Elios got up from his desk, casually carrying the box to the office door. Hardscrabble had quite a collection of unopened packages. They'd been sitting in the same spot since he took over. What if I just slipped the package on the bottom of the heap?
How long before it would be discovered? he wondered. He carefully glanced around the lab once more, just to be sure. He had to be sure he wasn't seen. He dug a space in the pile of packages and strategically placed it on the bottom. In a petty act of revenge, he stepped on it. Oh man, did that feel good! He checked around again, then carefully placed the heaviest packages on top of the box before stacking the rest haphazardly around it.
A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation. He walked back to his desk, smiling broadly. His thoughts raced as he sat down and looked over at the pile, chuckling softly to himself. No, sir, to the best of my knowledge sir, the package has not arrived, sir, he thought. The blame would fall squarely on Hardscrabble for not doing his job properly or effectively… for his reckless abandon when it came to meeting his obligations…
for his outright laziness and overall stupidity. Mordak's pending tirade circled through his head… Hardscrabble, you incompetent twat, you couldn't even check your mail! You knew we needed that one piece to fix the machine! How stupid are you? We have been waiting for weeks; you had one job, you fool, and that was to make sure that machine was up and running and you couldn't even do that right! Get out! You're fired! Elios smiled satisfactorily as the scenarios played out in his head.
Broken, what do you mean it's broken, you stupid incompetent ass! If you checked your mail daily like you are supposed to, it wouldn't be broken now, would it? Why are you still here? Get out before I have you thrown out! Or… Mordak could do exactly what he did to Charlie. The thought brought a satisfied smile to his lips. Now that is something I would pay to see, even if I had to borrow money to get the ticket. It would serve the pompous son of a bitch right, he thought, looking down at the reports on his desk.
"Hope you enjoyed your golf outing with Mordak," he whispered, snickering to himself.
"Let the countdown commence."
