Tuthmosis stood beside the nine foot eyesore that depicted his boss in all his tacky splendor. He re‑read the memo in his head for the hundredth time.' The statue in the foyer of my office is to be polished twice a day. Not once, but twice. You are to use the gold polish and the special cloths in the utility closet behind the desk. No other cleaner or material is to be used. These cloths were hand crafted by elderly women on the northern slopes of the Killya Mountains.
Each strand is woven from the fur of the endangered mountain willybob. They are rare and extremely expensive cleansing cloths, guaranteed not to scratch or remove the finish. If I see you using anything else, you will be terminated. Remember, I know what you are doing at all times.' He rolled his eyes and made quick work of polishing the back of the statue. It depicted two identical Mordaks locked in a self congratulatory handshake.
The smug expression on both faces was so baked into the sculpt that no amount of polishing could ever dull it. One Mordak beamed, teeth bared in triumph. The other tilted his head back mid laugh, as if he had just told himself a joke. The base split between them. One side obsidian, the other marble. Each side carried a plaque in highly polished gold and silver with an equally ridiculous inscription… Mordak Blackwood, a man equal only to himself. Mordak Blackwood, taking back what was his.
Behind the statue, a mirrored panel reflected the handshake infinitely. It created an endless tribute to his vanity and was an absolute bitch to clean.
"Mr. Blackwood, Sir," Tuthmosis called out, catching Mordak out of the corner of his eye.
"I did not expect you back," He paused, guilt flickering across his face.
"Eh… So soon," he finished, squeezing his way out from behind the towering gold plated monument to madness. I don't know which is worse. Polishing your gold asses or having to kiss the flesh one, he thought.
"I was just polishing you… I mean, your statue," he said, holding up the rag and motioning to the nine foot monstrosity.
"Great. You missed a spot. You are fired. Get your ass out of my sight, and before you go, have GR send down a replacement," Mordak snapped as he strode toward his office.
"Sir," Tuthmosis muttered. Really? We are doing this again? His eyes narrowed.
"Was I not clear?" Mordak barked.
"Do you have some kind of mental defect? Or maybe a hearing problem?" He marched back toward him.
"Let me make this easy for you to understand. I said you are fired… kaput… you no longer work here." This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report. Oh my. When was the last time you brushed your teeth? Or at least rinsed with something other than urine? Tuthmosis thought, assaulted by Mordak's breath.
"You can use that rag to wipe away your tears on your way out. Consider it a souvenir." Tuthmosis looked down at the cloth. The only thing I would use this for is shoving it in your mouth to block the smell.
"Yes, Sir." He placed the rag on the desk.
"I will have Goblin Resources send down a replacement right away, Sir. Is there anything else I can do for you, Sir?" Maybe I should lay down so you do not have to step so high to walk all over me, you worthless piece of… He walked out, rolling his eyes. This was the fifth time Mordak had fired him this week. How that clueless ass got this far is beyond me. At this point, it was easier to play the game than argue.
He took a moment in the outer office to collect himself, straightened his suit jacket, then knocked lightly on Mordak's door before opening it.
"Sir, GR sent me down," he said flatly.
"Your desk is out there. Unless you want to be making a trip to GR to get your replacement, I recommend you go sit at it," Mordak growled.
"Yes, Sir," Tuthmosis said, heading back into the reception area.
"Wait," Mordak called out, making him turn on his heel.
"Yes, Sir. Can I get you something?" A cold drink? Maybe a therapist?
"What is your name?" Mordak demanded.
"Tuthmosis, Sir," he said, giving him a half smile. Same as it has always been for the last two years, you blathering idiot.
"Tuthmosis," Mordak repeated, rolling the name around like a marble in his mouth.
"Tuthmosis." He stared out the window.
"Why does that name seem familiar?" He shrugged. Maybe because I have spent two years dealing with your crap day in and day out. You even call me at home because you forgot how to wipe…
"Does not matter," Mordak said, shaking his head.
"Well, Tuthmosis, I am feeling a bit peckish. Somewhere on that desk out there, the idiot you replaced should have a memo for my order at McJunky's. Get it here in fifteen minutes or you are fired." I'm the idiot? Look in a mirror, you bloated, washed up ignoramus.
"Yes, Sir," Tuthmosis said, digging his fingernails into his palms to keep from exploding.
"Will there be anything else, Sir?" A team of trained monkeys? Your chair straightened? Your lucky pen, perhaps?
"Just shut the door behind you and remember. Fifteen minutes."
"Or I am fired. I get it," he said, shutting the door. Do not threaten me with a good time. You keep firing me, but it is about as meaningful now as that raise you promised last year.
