"Holy shit," Alex muttered, leaning closer to the imaging screen.
"It's not a machine. It's a living organism." He twisted the viewer's knob, zooming in on the intricate structures.
"Look - these are eggs. Actual, honest-to-goodness eggs." Mikale raised an eyebrow.
"Found the port yet?"
"Back end," Alex pointed.
"Designed to both receive coding and expel immature eggs. Efficient little bastard." The organism began squirming in their synthetic fluid, releasing tiny droplets. Mikale watched, simultaneously repulsed and fascinated.
"Did it just…"
"Yup. Laid a whole clutch." Alex magnified the view.
"Timer. Now. I want to track how fast these things mature."
"Mature?"
"Think about it," Alex said, eyes never leaving the screen.
"Infection in egg stage, total DNA destruction once they're adults. It's the perfect little weapon." A hint of professional admiration crept into his voice. One egg's internal structure started expanding.
"It's growing," Alex said, something between excitement and horror in his tone.
"Real-time biological warfare, right here in our lab." Mikale whistled.
"Whoever engineered these is a bloody genius." He watched, transfixed, as the organism expanded and secreted a liquid that hardened around it, transforming from transparent to opaque.
"I began running a DNA sequence on the nanobot itself to see what microorganisms were used to create it," Alex said, matter-of-factly.
"Unless the genius is the almighty creator himself, it had to come from nature, or at least pieces had to." Mikale looked at him, trying to formulate how he could possibly devise coding for this unique organism.
"We are out of my wheelhouse here, Alex, I can't lie. When we said we would create coding I was under the impression we were going to write coding for the mechanical part, not the biological." Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.
"That occurred to me, hence the reason I decided to run the organism's DNA. We will have to do some genetic modifications ourselves if we stand any chance of destroying these things," he said, returning his gaze to the screen.
"DNA is basically nature's coding, so conceptually it is the same."
"Conceptually, yes, but in reality I cannot simply go to the computer, write a code to tell it what we want it to do and then send it on its way," Mikale said, flatly.
"I wouldn't even know where to begin with something like this, Alex."
"All I really need from you in this is for you to design a modified shell that has the equipment necessary to inject the nanobot with the code," he said, trying to reassure Mikale that this was still in the scope of possibility.
"Don't forget, I'm flying by the seat of my pants here too. I'm not an actual doctor or microbiologist. I have been doing a lot of reading on the subject, but I have zero experience with shit this advanced, to be honest I'm not sure many people do."
"So you need me to devise a shell with a micro-penis?" Mikale chuckled.
"Essentially yes." He smiled.
"We have to look at this from a completely biological standpoint. We need a way to impregnate the existing female nanobots with our modified males, fertilizing the immature eggs." He took a deep breath.
"Once I get a true DNA footprint of the organism, in theory, I can then go about making the genetic modifications needed to fertilize the immature eggs and essentially create a whole new genetic line of nanobots."
"Well, I guess I better get to work, sitting here isn't going to get anything pregnant." Mikale laughed.
"Do you have any schematics I can use? If I don't design it properly it won't get anyone pregnant either, so I need to know the dimensions of the cavity it needs to penetrate."
"I sent them to your inbox as we were taking the measurements and specifics of the shell once it hardened. I still have not been able to isolate its properties. It does not appear to be organic, but instead a synthetic material that the nanobot secretes upon maturity," Alex said with cool detachment.
"Well, if you can identify the properties while in liquid form, I may be able to replicate it, or at the very least tell you what we will need to create it," Mikale replied, hopeful.
"Unless of course, it is biological and not synthetic then… well, I think the only ones getting screwed will be us."
"Okay, I will handle all the biologics while you handle the mechanics, hopefully we will come together and everything works the way we would like," Alex said, walking to the DNA processor to see if the results were ready.
