The first file opened. The buried workshop filled with the voice of a stranger who had never understood why he had been chosen. John's archive did not replay the past through clean footage. It rebuilt it from broken medical sensors, corrupted audio, scan ghosts, and Prime Flux residue trapped inside crystalline memory wafers. The room remembered enough to hurt. A young man appeared above the console—worker-thin, exhausted, twenty-four years old.
E-006 NAME: TAL MEREK ORIGIN: FLOOR 9 / INDUSTRIAL MAINTENANCE ABILITY: LOW-GRADE ELECTRIC DISCHARGE CONSENT: CONDITIONAL VOLUNTEER DEPENDENT MEDICAL DEBT: ACTIVE Lumina's glow dimmed. Conditional volunteer. In Crimeria, that usually meant someone had been shown a knife and offered the privilege of walking toward it. Tal sat inside a testing chair with conduits threaded into both arms. A crude artificial core hovered before his chest, its crystal glowing a flat imitation of violet.
The Chain Ring warmed on Z-69's finger as if offended. Younger John spoke from the recording.
"False Thunderlight carrier trial. Prime Flux input at one percent." Tal looked toward someone off-screen.
"Will it hurt?" A pause.
"Yes," John answered. Tal laughed once.
"At least you didn't lie." The artificial core brightened. Prime Flux moved first. Electricity followed. Then something tried to become Thunderlight without understanding what Thunderlight was. Z-69's crystal rejected the pattern before it touched him. The false current was too wide. Too hungry. It did not purify. It burned. Tal screamed. COHERENCE DROP PRIME FLUX OVERLOAD NERVOUS SYSTEM BURNOUT IMMINENT White swallowed the projection. Then the result appeared. SURVIVAL TIME: 00: 09: 18 FINAL WORDS: DID IT WORK?
The question remained after Tal vanished. John stood motionless. No apology came. Good. The dead did not need another one. Behind Elise, the trace timer continued falling. TRACE DELAY: 09: 46 Beside it, Dorian's mirror cube pulsed. Alive. Critical. Waiting. The second file opened with a hum. Soft. Childlike. Wrong. Blind Echo tightened beneath Z-69's shoulder blades. The U-022 freezer hissed behind him. Lumina looked up. That sound.
"I hear it." John's hand moved toward the console.
"I should skip this one."
"No," Elise said.
"That file is contaminated."
"So was the thing he just ate." Lumina's head snapped toward her. Do not use that against him. Elise kept her eye on John.
"You chose the file. Open it." John obeyed. E-088 NAME: ORIN VALEC ORIGIN: FLOOR 8 / ACOUSTIC ENGINEERING ABILITY: RESONANCE SENSITIVITY CONSENT: VOLUNTEER / RESEARCH STAFF SURVIVAL: 4 DAYS STATUS: TERMINATED BY REQUEST Orin sat inside a sound-dampened chamber in a researcher's coat, smiling like a man who believed understanding danger made him safe from it. Younger John's voice explained the objective: transmit Thunderlight command structures through sound instead of living anchors. Orin grinned at the camera.
"Thunderlight without martyrs." A low tone played. Violet light rippled through the chamber. A Corruption sample recoiled inside its tube. For one breath, it worked. Then the tone answered itself. Orin's smile vanished.
"Do you hear that?"
"Hear what?" John asked. Orin turned toward the wall.
"There's someone in the sound." The archive jumped. Day two: Orin sat on the floor with both hands over his ears.
"They're marching in the walls." Day three: he carved waveforms and military cadence patterns into the floor with bloody fingers—formations he had never studied. He raised red eyes toward the camera.
"Thunderlight isn't one frequency." A sob broke through his smile.
"It's a choir." Something in Z-69 remembered Caius. The Division rising together. Bodies becoming anchors. Seven minutes of light built from flesh, metal, Prime Flux, and consent. Orin should not have known. But Prime Flux carried more than energy. It carried pressure. Grief. Repeated action. Command. A battlefield where thousands died could teach the current where to flow. The final fragment played. Blood ran from Orin's ears. His voice was calm.
"Terminate me." Younger John did not answer.
"Please," Orin said.
"There are too many voices already." The file closed. FINAL WORDS: THUNDERLIGHT IS A CHOIR Blind Echo carried the phrase after the screen went dark. Lumina looked at Z-69. Is it true? Valdora answered before he did. This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there.
"Yes." Elise watched John.
"So he was not mad."
"No," John said. And you called it hallucination, Lumina said. John offered no defense. The third file appeared. E-241 Elise missed one heartbeat. Her gloved hand rose toward her eyepatch, stopped, then fell. The file opened. NAME: LIRA SENN AGE: 15 ORIGIN: FLOOR 7 / SANCTUARY DEPENDENT REGISTRY ABILITY: EMOTIONAL RESONANCE / LATENT CONSENT: SANCTUARY PROTECTIVE CUSTODY PROTOCOL: EMOTIONAL RESONANCE STABILIZATION STATUS: DECEASED DURING SEDATION A girl appeared inside a small room. A bed. A shelf.
A mirror hidden beneath cloth. Untouched food beside the door. She sat with her knees against her chest, afraid not of who might enter, but of what she would feel when they did.
"Please don't send Dr. John today," she told a nurse.
"He needs to check your readings." Lira shook her head.
"His guilt is too loud." Current John closed his eyes. The archive displayed the diagnosis. PRIME FLUX FIELD INTERPRETS EMOTIONAL PRESSURE AS SIGNAL STAFF FEAR / GUILT / PITY REPORTED AS PHYSICAL PAIN The recording shifted. Lira sat in a testing chair. Younger John stood beside her, less metal and somehow more tired.
"You're sad today," she said.
"I am focused."
"No. E-238 died, and you're trying to be angry instead." John said nothing.
"Does anger hurt less?" The image glitched around an old manual cut. Current John whispered, "I edited that."
"I know," Elise said. The graft trial began. A bio-spiritual lens settled near Lira's left eye, built to filter emotional Prime Flux before it drowned her. If she could read the fear and grief destabilizing False Thunderlight, she could regulate it. A child turned into an instrument for other people's pain. The graft activated. Lira screamed. Not because of the eye. Because everyone in the room became audible inside her. The nurse's pity. The technician's disgust. John's hope. John's terror. John's guilt.
For six minutes, the graft worked. Then blood poured from Lira's left eye. EMOTIONAL SIGNAL SATURATION COHERENCE OVERLOAD SEDATION REQUESTED She reached for John. His hand moved toward hers—then stopped. The protocol required no interference. Contact would contaminate the data. John had always been good at letting reasons stand between himself and mercy.
"Please make it quiet," Lira whispered. Sedation entered her veins. Too late. Or too much. Her heart slowed. Green light flickered beneath the blood in her eye, then died. SURVIVAL AFTER GRAFT: 29 DAYS FINAL WORDS: MAKE IT QUIET The workshop hummed on. Lumina's voice was barely audible. E-241. John opened his eyes.
"Elise was not the first to feel us."
"No," Elise said. Z-69 studied her.
"The same type."
"Not the same."
"Her graft failed," John said. Elise turned on him.
"Say it properly." John's jaw tightened.
"Say it." His voice came smaller.
"I learned from her." Lumina recoiled. Elise's heartbeat became perfectly steady—the practiced stillness of someone who had survived because another child had not.
"There," she said.
"Was that so difficult?"
"Yes." For once, Elise had no answer. The three files closed. Debt. Sound. Emotion. Three graves pointing toward the last file. E-247 STATUS: SURVIVED PRIME FLUX COMPATIBILITY: STABLE / EMOTIONAL RESONANCE TYPE ACCESS: LOCKED BY SUBJECT OVERRIDE CURRENT AUTHORITY: ELISE REINER PHRASE REQUIRED The microphone lit.
"Open it," Z-69 said.
"No," John answered.
"You opened the others."
"They are dead." John looked at the locked file.
"Elise is not." The answer stopped the room.
"She chose what you were allowed to see," he continued.
"If you want the rest, ask her." Lumina studied him. You are respecting a boundary.
"I'm trying something new." Z-69 turned to Elise.
"No," she said before he could ask.
"You need the counter-record to find Dorian."
"You need part of it. Not all of me." The mirror cube pulsed. NEXT KEY REQUIRED: LEVEL FOUR INTERNAL NODE OR E-247 COUNTER-RECORD Elise placed two fingers against her file. SUBJECT OVERRIDE ACTIVE COUNTER-RECORD FRAGMENT AVAILABLE FULL FILE: SEALED"See?" she said.
"I can be generous." That is not generosity, Lumina replied.
"No. It is strategy with manners." A fragment unfolded. BASELINE IDENTITY: PERSONHOOD CONFIRMED PRIOR TO IMPRINT CONSENT STATUS: CONTRADICTED SUBJECT SELF-DECLARATION: ELISE REINER OWNERSHIP CLAIM INVALIDATION POTENTIAL: HIGH CUSTODY ARCHITECTURE CHALLENGE: ENABLED Dorian's cube flared.
COUNTER-RECORD ACCEPTED TRANSFER MIRROR INTEGRITY: 47% → 61% SUB-ROUTE: BIO-RESONANT WITNESS HOLD BODY STATUS AT HANDOFF: ALIVE / CRITICAL COGNITIVE STATUS: RESPONSIVE TO REPORT STIMULUS CURRENT LOCATION: LEVEL FOUR / INTERNAL NODE MASKED NEXT KEY: LEVEL FOUR INTERNAL ACCESS Not enough. But Dorian's prison had bled through the lock. Alive. Critical. Responsive. Crimeria had not lost him. It had hidden him carefully.
"That is all you get," Elise said.
"For now." Her smile sharpened.
"Hope makes people rude."
"You are here."
"That is not hope."
"No. It is leverage." Elise laughed softly.
"You're learning the local language." I hate this language, Lumina said.
"So do I." This time Elise sounded honest. The timer flashed. TRACE DELAY: 05: 38 John collapsed the E-series archive before Level Four could index more of the dead. The Dorian mirror remained open.
COUNTER-RECORD ACCEPTED TRANSFER-MIRROR INTEGRITY: 47% → 61% CURRENT BODY STATUS: ALIVE / OFFLINE MEDICAL SUPPORT CUSTODY STATUS: DISPUTED / DEFAULT CLAIM SUSPENDED PRIOR ROUTE FAMILY: BIO-RESONANT WITNESS HOLD PARTNER INTERFACE: DREAMSEA EMOTIONAL-ATMOSPHERE NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE OWNER: AETHERGRID PARTNER NODE LEVEL FOUR INTERNAL ACCESS: MASKED The new fields did not reveal where Dorian lay now.
They revealed how his pain had been routed before Mara's crew pulled him out of the filtration spine—and which private system had helped transform a living nervous response into ordinary infrastructure noise. Lumina read the interface name. DreamSea. John's cybernetic eye dimmed. Elise did not look surprised. Z-69 watched her heartbeat through Blind Echo.
"You knew."
"I suspected."
"That is not the same thing."
"No." Elise touched the route family without opening it.
"DreamSea sells memory, grief, weather, and relief. Its atmosphere systems read emotional pressure and convert it into light, sound, rain, warmth, and the correct kind of sadness." Lumina's ears lowered. They used Dorian's pain as atmosphere.
"Or hid it inside atmosphere," John said.
"A bio-resonant return can look like grief contamination if the system wants it to."
"Who owns DreamSea?" Z-69 asked. John became still. Elise smiled without amusement.
"A man who owns dependencies and calls the result hospitality." The route-trace console chimed. TRACE DELAY: 03: 12 John looked toward Elise.
"No." Elise's smile sharpened.
"There he is." Z-69 waited. John finally spoke the name.
"Marius Thorne." The buried workshop seemed to dislike it. Elise continued.
"Owner of DreamSea. AetherGrid partner. Patron of civic restoration. Collector of fake skies, clean hands, and contracts that turn custody into service." John looked at the mirror.
"If DreamSea kept a local replay fragment, it may contain the internal node mask." And if Marius erased it? Elise walked toward the hidden route.
"Then we ask why a man who claims not to own Dorian spent money destroying the shape of his pain." The timer continued. TRACE DELAY: 02: 41 Z-69 secured the Dorian mirror beside Caius Veyr's badge and the partial counter-record Elise had chosen to release. None of the objects belonged to him. Carrying them did not change that.
"When?"
"Floor Six," Elise answered.
"Now would be dramatic. Two days would be intelligent." John looked at the route trace.
"We do not have two days."
"Then try to become intelligent faster." Lumina stared at Elise. You are coming. Elise stepped into the hidden passage. Her visible eye curved with the beginning of a dangerous smile.
"Of course." Then she disappeared before John could object. The archive timer fell beneath two minutes. John opened a service route climbing toward Floor Six.
"DreamSea," he muttered.
"A beautiful room built over ugly math." Z-69 followed. Dorian was already out of the filtration spine. The city was still trying to inherit the meaning of what had happened to him. And Marius Thorne owned one of the places where that meaning had been processed into something profitable.
