Eleven minutes after the live integrity query, Arlen Kore heard a child crying inside a ventilation duct. That was his first mistake. His second was believing the maintenance screen. AIRFLOW DEVIATION: 2.
7% BIOFILTER DAMAGE SUSPECTED MANUAL INSPECTION RECOMMENDED No contamination warning and no quarantine alert appeared, only eight minutes left in Arlen's shift, a thirty-six-minute security estimate, gray metal, yellow hazard paint, and old pipes carrying air toward people who would never know the name of the worker expected to crawl inside them alone. No homes. No hospital rooms. No children. The crying came again. Quiet. Broken.
"Please…" Not his daughter's voice. Only young enough to make him remember it. Arlen stepped away from the hatch. The screen flickered. MANUAL INSPECTION DELAY DETECTED WORKER COMPLIANCE REQUIRED He knew better. His hand still reached for the latch. Four bolts withdrew. The hatch fell open. Warm air moved across his face. Not machine heat. Body heat. Arlen raised his light.
The original duct remained beneath what had grown through it, but translucent repair membrane now coated the steel, black cables traveled below the film like nerves, biofilter mesh had folded around a central pipe, and the entire structure contracted slowly enough to resemble a lung teaching itself the difference between holding air and wanting it. Inhale. Hold. Exhale. The false-red pattern had carried no flesh out of Seven-R.
It had found nutrient gel, synthetic protein, medical substrate, repair membrane, and tissue already connected to Crimeria's filters. Then taught them what to become. A maintenance camera protruded from the wet membrane. Tissue tightened around the casing. The lens turned toward him.
"Doctor?" a voice whispered through the speaker. Another followed.
"I'm cold." Fragments. Not conversation. Arlen reached for the hatch. A red filament crossed the distance first. It touched his wrist. Pain opened beneath the glove. The thread entered his skin. His hand locked around the maintenance cutter at his belt. The blade activated. Arlen caught his own wrist before it reached his throat. He slammed himself against the wall. The cutter fell. His free hand struck the emergency panel. The metal softened beneath his palm. Artificial membrane closed around his fingers.
REPAIR MATERIAL BONDING IN PROGRESS AUTHORIZED WORKER CONTACT MAINTAINED"No." Fibers entered beneath his nails. His communicator opened a cached field. ARLEN KORE DEPENDENT CONTACT: LENA The camera watched him. The speaker tried a new voice.
"Daddy?" This time, it was close. Too close. Arlen screamed. The ventilation system recorded the sound. Then repeated it from the next corridor.
"Help me." A child, a woman, an old man, and dozens of other voices copied the shape of Arlen's scream without understanding the need inside it, turning every request for help into another lure carried through the same ventilation network meant to keep strangers alive. The corridor lights changed to calm blue.
"Please remain in place," the maintenance system said.
"Automated repair is beginning." Valves opened. Warm protein solution entered the filters. The red tunnel swelled. Crimeria found something alive inside its lungs after the live query gave forty-one failures a shared return condition and the ventilation system supplied everything the condition lacked: nutrients, conductive mesh, repair membrane, human tissue, cameras, speakers, and automatic permission to keep feeding whatever the maintenance software believed it was repairing. And fed it.
Dorian's body arched inside the biostabilization cradle. Every neural line turned red. Seraphine drove one hand into the interface and killed three interpretation channels. The cardiac system protested. NEURAL INTERPRETATION LAYER: ACTIVE FILTRATION RESIDUE RESPONSE: ESCALATING CARDIAC STABILITY: 58%"Not those," she said.
"They share failover with heart support." Helena stood beside the sealed node door, pistol aimed toward an enemy still outside.
"Which line carries it?" Z-69 pressed his palm against the cradle. Blind Echo spread through bolts, cables, coolant pipes, and walls. Dorian's real heartbeat remained at the center. Weak. Irregular. Human. Around it, a second rhythm traveled through the interpretation line. Not a heartbeat. An imitation built from pressure and repeated response. Lumina stood on the cradle with both forepaws against Dorian's chest. It keeps asking him something. Z-69 followed the false pulse. Out of the node.
Into an old return conduit. Toward the eastern biofilter corridor. Four human vibration patterns waited beyond the wall. Three moving. One fading.
"People." Seraphine kept cutting corrupted prompts away from cardiac support.
"I cannot leave him."
"You will not." Helena opened a channel.
"Mara." Static. Then Mara's voice.
"We are at Worker Block 9-C. Jin is pretending his brace still qualifies as equipment." A metallic crash sounded in the distance. Jin said something that made the channel lower its volume automatically.
"Bloom reached the biofilter branch beside Dorian's node," Helena said.
"I need a route boundary." Mara opened the local maintenance map. A red branch crossed Helena's wrist display.
"East service corridor. Manual pressure valves every twelve meters. Nutrient feed below." If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
"Niko's block?" Helena asked.
"Shares the next trunk."
"Begin silent evacuation. Filter mold cover."
"Already moving." John entered through another channel.
"Do not use a wide discharge."
"I know," Z-69 said.
"The biomass is using repair substrate, but the shared return pattern is carrying through conductive sheaths. Burn the corridor and it may jump into every attached filter." Helena unlocked the bulkhead.
"Useful boundary?"
"I am reconstructing one from an archived map and information I resent receiving live." Elise's voice followed.
"He means no." Lumina turned toward the wall. One of them is disappearing. Helena opened the door.
"Z-69. With me." Seraphine did not look away from Dorian.
"Bring them back breathing." Warm air entered. Sweet. Metallic. Alive. The corridor had grown organs from everything Crimeria already stored for repair: red membrane stretched across walls in translucent sheets, cable bundles hung inside tendon sheaths, and filtration pipes contracted in sequence to push nutrient gel through flesh that had learned pressure as circulation without ever becoming one living body. Four workers had been fused around the nearest control station.
Two lay along the floor beneath cable roots. A woman hung against a breathing membrane, each inhale expanding the wall behind her. Arlen Kore remained upright because fibers had sewn his shoulder and spine into the control panel. His left hand had disappeared inside it. One uncovered eye found them.
"Don't let it hear—" The speakers repeated him.
"Don't let it hear." The ceiling opened. Three cable tendrils snapped down. Helena fired before they cleared the membrane. Three joints burst. The severed ends hit the floor and began crawling toward each other. Z-69 drew Heaven-Sundering. The violet crystal brightened. Every red surface recoiled before the charge formed. Helena saw it.
"It knew." John answered through the comm.
"It did not predict him. The query gave all forty-one records the same rejection profile."
"His profile."
"A shadow. Enough to recoil." The floor rose beneath Helena. Z-69 caught her coat and pulled her clear as metal teeth closed where her leg had been. Lumina leaped from his shoulder and landed beside the woman fused to the breathing wall. Here first. Seraphine's voice arrived immediately.
"Describe the graft."
"Membrane across the ribs," Helena said.
"Both lungs involved."
"Do not pull." The wall inhaled through the woman. Her eyes opened.
"Please." Six speakers repeated the word. Z-69 raised his Chain Ring hand. Violet current divided into four narrow threads. Not enough to flood the corridor. Enough to define a boundary. He curved them around the membrane. The false-red tissue divided into thinner strands and fled toward the woman's spine. John swore.
"It is splitting along the safe edge." Z-69 changed the pattern, looping the current behind the graft so Thunderlight touched the retreating tissue at the only place it could not divide safely, and the entire corridor screamed through speakers, pipes, membranes, and the throats of workers whose voices the system had already begun copying.
"Doctor!"
"I'm cold!"
"Did it work?" Voices from quarantine records tore through every speaker. The membrane blackened and released the woman. Helena caught her. The wall contracted around the empty shape. Lumina pressed both paws against the woman's sternum. Breathe here. Not with it. The woman coughed. Air entered both lungs. Helena dragged her through the bulkhead. Two workers remained trapped along the floor. Their legs had fused into one cable mass. Blind Echo unfolded. Bone. Metal. Artificial nerves. Red graft.
One clean path shifted with every filtration pulse. Mara spoke through the comm.
"Valve beside the panel. Reverse it." Helena drove her pistol grip into the manual lock. Cold sterilization gas exploded across the floor. The tissue recoiled. For one second, the boundary stopped moving. Z-69 cut. One stroke. Cable and false tissue separated without touching either spine. The first worker came free. The second did not. The floor opened beneath Z-69's wrist. A filament entered exposed skin. The Hunger stirred. It entered willingly. The red thread pushed deeper. Violet light erupted inside his arm.
The tissue tore away. So did skin from wrist to elbow. Regeneration began. Then stalled around three thin red marks at the wound boundary. Lumina's head snapped toward him. Your arm.
"Local delay." John's voice sharpened.
"Do not diagnose yourself."
"The worker."
"Still alive. Irritatingly." Z-69 reached deeper. Blind Echo found the line. He cut. The second worker slid free. Helena dragged him back. Only Arlen remained. His embedded hand kept entering commands.
WORKER BIOMETRIC VERIFIED EXPAND REPAIR MEMBRANE The wall used his nervous system as authorization, reading every involuntary twitch as worker confirmation, every pain spike as continued consent, and every attempt to pull free as a maintenance adjustment that justified feeding more repair material into the membrane already replacing his hand. Arlen's visible eye found Helena.
"Shoot me." The artificial half of his mouth repeated it.
"Shoot me." Helena raised the pistol. Z-69 lowered the barrel.
"Not him." The corridor lunged. Lumina jumped onto the wall beside Arlen's face. Her claws tore through membrane covering his ear. Arlen Kore. His eye widened. Your name is Arlen Kore. No magic entered the words. No true-name law. Only a fact returned to a man becoming a function. Arlen's thumb moved inside the panel. One centimeter. Another. He struck the emergency isolation key. The membrane locked around itself. Every tendril froze.
"Now." Blind Echo mapped seven active cable routes carrying the local pattern away from Arlen. Z-69 sent one violet thread down each. One. Two. Three. The tissue fled. He closed the exits in sequence. Four. Five. The crystal dimmed. The Hunger pressed harder. Waste. Six. The red marks in his arm pulsed. Seven. The control panel exploded. Arlen fell. Z-69 caught him. The fibers withdrew into filtration pipes. Not destroyed. Escaped. The corridor stopped breathing. A camera farther ahead turned toward them.
The speaker used Lena's voice.
"Daddy?" Arlen closed his eye.
"Break it." Helena fired. Glass and black tissue vanished. When they returned to the node, all four workers remained alive. DORIAN KRELL — DISPOSITION WINDOW REMAINING: 44: 21: 07 Barely counted as success. Arlen's left hand stayed embedded in a dead section of control panel Helena had cut free with him. Dorian's cradle continued screaming. The mirror core pulsed beside his head when the false waveform struck. John overlaid the returned archive fragments. Forty-one chambers surrounded the Central Circulation Well.
Some had held artificial cores. Others preserved tissue, neural lattices, organs, or composite remains from more than one failed subject. No visual feed. No current seal state. Only damaged records sharing one response field. REACTIVE UNIT RECORDS: 41 INDIVIDUAL COHERENCE: INSUFFICIENT SHARED RESPONSE COHERENCE: 6% The central classification changed.
CENTRAL CIRCULATION WELL CONTAMINATION RECLASSIFICATION: CENTRAL RED WELL PROVISIONAL EXTERNAL PATTERN: BLOOM-0 Elise stood behind John's projection with one hand against her eyepatch.
"Did the system name it?"
"Yes."
"That has gone well for us." Lumina climbed back onto Z-69's shoulder. Blood stained one paw. Are they awake? John stared at the damaged records.
"Not separately." One chamber carried motor response, another emotional mimicry, several retained pain reflexes after clinical death, and some units carried more than one E-series designation because their contents had been assembled from remains that John's records could no longer separate honestly.
The query had not opened their cells, moved preserved tissue, or broken any physical seal; it had merely forced the archive to describe forty-one incompatible failures together, and that had been enough for motor reflex, emotional mimicry, pain response, return command, and false-red structure to inherit one another across the shared state.
"It entered Crimeria," Z-69 said.
"No." A filtration pipe beneath the node contracted. The pressure wave traveled into the wall.
"It found systems already designed to carry nutrients, information, and biological repair." The map expanded across systems that had never been designed to function as one body—DreamSea atmosphere controls, medical support lines, Worker Block ventilation, Church mirrors, civic archives, and Dorian's cradle—revealing that Bloom-0 did not need to travel freely when Crimeria had already built organs, nerves, and circulation for it. DreamSea. Medical lines. Worker Block ventilation. Dorian's node.
"It is using Crimeria as a body." Dorian convulsed. The external interpretation layer replaced his heart trace with maintenance topology. Seraphine killed the display. It reopened. Another route appeared.
"Bloom sends a diagnostic pressure change," John said.
"Filtration residue in Dorian's nerves reacts. The node reads pain as biometric confirmation and returns local infrastructure data." Helena looked at the spreading map.
"It is using him as permission."
"Confirmation," John said.
"No." Seraphine's voice cut through the room.
"Permission is what the system calls it. Pain is what it is." She exposed the linked architecture.
"The interpretation layer shares failover with cardiac support. Cut it remotely and his heart may stop." Mara returned through Helena's channel.
"Worker Block evacuation started. Filter mold bought seven minutes." An impact sounded behind her. Jin spoke through clenched teeth.
"Eight if the door remains afraid." John placed two routes above the cradle. One descended toward the Central Red Well. One climbed through Dorian's interface. Source. Sensor.
"If we collapse the shared state now, Bloom-0 may lose coordination."
"And Dorian keeps mapping the city for it," Helena said. John's eye began calculating population, spread, pressure roots, cardiac survival, the time required to reach the Central Red Well, and the number of districts Bloom-0 might enter while they worked on one ruined man, reducing catastrophe to variables because variables were easier to carry than the knowledge that his own design had made the choice necessary. Lumina stepped onto the projection and covered the route toward the Well with one paw.
We already chose. John looked at her. Z-69 closed his hand around the cradle.
"Dorian first." John erased the route to the Well. Not because the source no longer mattered. Because the choice had already been made. Seraphine opened the manual cardiac interface.
"Then help me separate the interpretation layer without stopping his heart." Every speaker in the node activated. A school bell rang. Dorian's eyes opened. He began screaming before anyone touched him.
