Dorian Krell should have been dead. Crimeria understood dead workers. It counted them, sealed them, corrected compensation records, reassigned household oxygen, and converted grief into forms with enough fields that no individual decision needed to resemble violence. A dead worker did not testify. A dead worker did not warn anyone against shared diagnostic lines.
A dead worker did not return from Floor Eight inside a maintenance stretcher while forty-seven hours and fifty-eight minutes remained before his guardianship defaulted to an office above him. Dorian was alive. The timer moved. Dorian breathed. Mara watched. No one relaxed.
So the city had started arguing over custody before anyone had stabilized his heart, restored his sight, or asked whether the man who had spent years functioning as a pressure instrument still possessed enough legal voice to refuse the next machine attached to him. Military boots crossed the filtration platform before the disposition timer lost another minute. Four soldiers arrived first.
The officer at their center wore a scarred gray command coat without medals, gold trim, or any decoration that could not survive heat. Short silver hair had been cut close for function. One military-grade eye sat inside matte-black housing, red targeting lines moving beneath the lens as it swept every worker, weapon, cable, open route, and possible failure point without pretending that observation was neutral.
John had once mentioned one commander with the tone of a man describing a shield capable of choosing who remained outside it. Helena. She did not smile. She did not need to. Around her, soldiers stood straighter, technicians shortened their answers, and maintenance workers lowered their voices because command had entered the room before any order was spoken. Helena stopped beside Dorian's stretcher while the disposition timer occupied every active screen on the platform.
47: 58: 11 DEFAULT TRANSFER AUTHORITY: LEGACY COMPLIANCE MEDICAL REVIEW SUBJECT COMPETENCY: UNRESOLVED Mara held Dorian's paper ledger against her chest. Karin, Havel, and Riko stood behind the stretcher with the posture of workers expecting authority to explain why saving one of their own had violated procedure. Jin leaned against the railing because the ruined leg brace no longer pretended to support him. Lumina remained on Z-69's shoulder, exhausted but alert. Helena read the local logs.
Her cybernetic eye paused on each manual disconnection.
"You disabled the shared scanner." Z-69 answered, "Yes."
"You prevented biometric upload."
"Yes."
"You opened the disposition window anyway."
"The system recognized his four-beat signal." Helena looked at Dorian's hand. His fingers struck the stretcher rail once. Paused. Then twice. Pain had become the clearest language he still controlled. Helena faced the medical technician.
"Transfer Dorian Krell under military casualty preservation." The technician swallowed.
"Commander, the disposition window identifies Legacy Compliance as default authority."
"For forty-seven hours."
"Yes."
"Then the default has not occurred." The technician looked at the armed soldiers behind her, then at the timer, then at Dorian's half-responsive hand, searching for a version of procedure that would let him obey the strongest authority present without becoming personally responsible for whichever department arrived later to demand the body, the data, the mirror core, or the right to call refusal a symptom.
"No, Commander."
"Medical stabilization only. No research custody. No sample division. No neural mirror. No shared diagnostic node." Dorian's eye opened wider at the final two prohibitions. Helena had read the warning. Good. The technician tried again.
"Military preservation status requires evidence of active defense relevance." Helena looked at the entire filtration hall.
"Three residential branches were stabilized through his nervous system without lawful consent. That is active defense relevance." The technician opened his mouth. Helena's cybernetic eye brightened. He closed it. Jin watched her.
"I like the way she performs paperwork." Lumina's ears lowered. Do not trust someone because she threatens the correct employee. Helena looked directly at her.
"Lumina." The use of her name stopped the next objection for half a second. Then Helena added, "Self-identified anomaly under contested civic status." Lumina's tail stiffened. You added the category after the name.
"Yes." Better. Not good. The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon. Helena nodded once.
"Accurate." Mara stepped closer to the commander.
"Dorian needs Seraphine Vale."
"He will receive her."
"No AetherGrid medical team."
"Agreed."
"No Legacy Compliance mirror unit."
"Agreed."
"No one connects Ren's core." Helena's gaze moved to Jin's coat.
"Agreed." Jin stopped smiling. Helena had known where the core was before he touched it. Mara continued, "His pain data stays offline." Helena looked at the paper ledger.
"For twelve hours, under military seal." Mara's expression hardened.
"The timer is forty-eight."
"My authority here is not." There it was. Helena could create a shield through command authority, soldiers, and the threat of institutional conflict. She could not pretend the shield covered the entire city, and she did not insult Mara by calling twelve hours security when the disposition timer had already begun counting toward forty-eight. Z-69 looked at the commander.
"What happens after twelve hours?"
"Someone above Floor Eight tries to reclassify him."
"And you?"
"I decide whether stopping them preserves more people than it endangers." Honest. Ugly. Credible enough to be dangerous. Dorian convulsed. One pressure lead still attached to the portable cardiac unit had retained legacy sensor logic. The line interpreted pain as a request for stronger synchronization and increased gain automatically. His hand struck the rail four times. Every platform speaker answered. Four knocks. A pause. Four more. Three workers coughed together. A maintenance drone rotated toward Dorian.
RESONANCE EVENT DETECTED MIRROR COMPARISON RECOMMENDED Dorian's speaker picked up his damaged nerve signal.
"No." The word came from every speaker at once. No one in the platform crowd moved. Dorian forced another fragment through the local audio system.
"No shared line." Helena turned toward her communications officer.
"Cut the platform relay." The officer hesitated.
"We lose central command feed."
"Cut it." He switched the platform to local radio. The speakers died. Manual alarms remained. Off-grid Crimeria formed around Dorian again. The timer did not stop. 47: 51: 26 The city could be denied data. It could not be made to forget that the subject existed. Seraphine arrived with two medical staff and an offline support rig. She took one look at Dorian and stopped asking ordinary questions.
"What remains of his cardiac support?" Havel answered immediately.
"Portable pump. Native rhythm intermittent. Neural feedback unstable."
"Sight?" Mara looked at Dorian's clouded eye.
"Partial." Seraphine checked the pupil.
"Not for long." Dorian's fingers moved. Four. Pause. Two. Z-69 felt the Chain Ring warm. The rhythm pointed toward the sealed Column Seventeen branch.
"Another person," he said. Mara opened the current missing-worker list. Three names. Dorian Krell. Sela Om. Tovan Rei. Riko looked at the final two.
"Sela worked filter replacement with us." Karin's jaw tightened.
"Tovan was a shift temp. No household file." Havel checked pressure telemetry.
"Active movement near C-17-L." Helena turned to the route display. The system classified the motion as: ACTIVE FILTRATION ANOMALY VALVE PROXIMITY: CRITICAL CIVILIAN AIRFLOW DEPENDENCY: THREE RESIDENTIAL BLOCKS Mara looked at Dorian. His hand tapped twice. Then once. Then twice again. Lumina listened through Z-69. He is warning us, not calling it closer. Seraphine attached an offline neural dampener. Dorian's body relaxed by one degree. Helena faced Z-69.
"You are the only responder here capable of entering the branch without a full containment team." Jin laughed once.
"Convenient." Helena ignored him. Z-69 asked, "Objective?"
"Prevent valve failure."
"That is not the same as terminate."
"No." Mara looked sharply at Helena. The commander continued.
"If the moving subject threatens the pressure junction and cannot be separated from the threat, terminate." The word entered the platform. The room changed. Jin stopped smiling. Mara went still. Lumina's tail froze. No one mistook it for theory. Lumina went still. It may be Sela. Helena heard her because Lumina aimed the thought outward.
"Yes." Then call her Sela.
"Identification is unconfirmed." The system used that excuse on me. Helena's expression did not soften. But her next words changed.
"Possible subject: Sela Om. Prevent valve failure. Preserve the worker if tactically possible." Mara exhaled. Not relief. A fraction more room in which to act. Z-69 looked at Dorian's timer. 47: 46: 03 Then at the civic notice on his wrist. TEN COMPETENCY REVIEW: 18: 00 Two people were waiting for systems to define them.
Dorian lay under a medical clock while an upper office prepared to inherit his guardianship; Ten waited inside Worker Block 9-C while Civic Stability prepared to map a second signature he could not remember using. Different rooms. The same administrative hunger. He accepted Helena's route tablet. The device displayed his status.
HIGH-VALUE ABNORMAL / FIELD EXCEPTION MISSION AUTHORITY: COMMANDER HELENA PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: PRESSURE JUNCTION PRESERVATION SECONDARY OBJECTIVE: SUBJECT RECOVERY IF FEASIBLE TERMINATION AUTHORIZED IF REQUIRED Z-69 deleted the final line. The system restored it. He deleted it again. Helena watched.
"You cannot alter command authorization."
"I am not altering your authority."
"What are you doing?"
"Making the disagreement visible." The tablet logged: RESPONDER ACKNOWLEDGMENT: PARTIAL TERMINATION AUTHORIZATION: CONTESTED Helena looked at the new line. For the first time, something near approval touched her face and disappeared.
"Useful." Lumina's voice snapped. Do not call him equipment. Helena corrected herself immediately.
"His refusal is useful." Better. Jin leaned toward Mara.
"We are training the commander." Mara activated the pressure console under Helena's twelve-hour emergency seal.
"You are staying outside." Jin looked offended.
"I was not asking."
"You were preparing."
"My face does many things."
"Your leg does one thing badly." Jin glanced toward Z-69. Mara caught the movement.
"If you enter and collapse, he chooses between you and Sela." The argument ended. Jin's hand tightened around his crutch. Then loosened.
"Fine." Helena assigned Karin and Havel to pressure control. Riko remained beside Seraphine and Dorian because the Saint's eye followed him whenever pain pulled the room away. Z-69 stepped toward the lower hatch. Lumina climbed from his shoulder to the metal frame and tested her bandaged paws.
"Stay outside," he said. Her ears flattened. No.
"You are exhausted." Sela may not hear you.
"You may collapse." Then catch me. The answer was unreasonable. It was also agency. Z-69 lowered his hand.
"Stay behind me." That was already the plan. The hatch began opening. Industrial air escaped in a bitter wave. Mara's voice entered his comm.
"Ten meters to the first bend. Junction pressure is unstable. Manual relief line exists, but the actuator has not passed inspection in seven years."
"That means it works manually."
"That means the report says it exists." Helena's channel opened beside hers.
"Suit feed active." Z-69 looked into the dark.
"Do not connect the feed to Dorian."
"I will not."
"Do not mirror Lumina."
"I will not."
"Do not route my Thunderlight data through the shared network." Helena paused.
"That limits tactical analysis."
"Yes." Another pause.
"Local recording only." The commander had accepted three constraints in less time than most officials required to acknowledge one because she understood that shared feeds could turn tactical clarity into another form of extraction, that every copied signal created a route back toward the person producing it, and that an officer who demanded perfect visibility could become the reason a hidden system learned where to strike. That did not make her kind.
It made her competent enough to recognize when more information increased danger rather than reducing it.
Z-69 entered Column Seventeen with The Human's knife in his hand and a direct order he had already placed on record as contested, leaving Helena with a clean tactical objective, Mara with ten minutes of borrowed access, Dorian with less than forty-eight hours before default transfer, and Ten waiting several floors away for a review that would begin sooner because this investigation had forced the city to look harder at every survivor connected to it. Behind him, the hatch sealed.
Ahead, metal clicked in a broken rhythm. Once. Twice. Then a woman's breath attempted to follow.
