Sub-Level Two had become Gideon's answer to the tracker. Psychic operatives entered through the north approach and found corridors lined with Dark dampeners, remote explosives, and caged Poison-types. Pure Mind Incense burned through ventilation shafts, amplifying psychic sensitivity until every scream and dying aura became impossible to ignore. Rine reached the maintenance overlook as the trap closed. Below, Gym acolytes fought Rocket Grunts between shattered containment units. A Mr.
Mime held a barrier against automatic fire. Kadabra redirected debris. Rocket Golbat filled the ceiling with Supersonic. Neither side controlled the room. Captured Pokémon suffered between them. Rine saw a Sandshrew trapped beneath a broken cage, an injured Koffing leaking gas, and three sedated Abra still connected to research equipment. The north gate controls lay across the battlefield. Lyra contacted him through the psychic token.
"Children?"
"In the tunnel."
"Gym entry team is pinned."
"I can see."
"Open the gate."
"Not until low-risk cells are isolated."
"We're losing people."
"So are the Pokémon you came to rescue." Lyra's anger touched the connection.
"Rine, move."
"Twelve-minute delay."
"We don't have twelve."
"Then make time." He ended contact. Houndour watched him. Gastly's vapor tightened. Rine used Identify on the control network. Six containment circuits. Two held aggressive or unstable specimens. Three held ordinary captured Pokémon. One powered research restraints. He sent Gastly through the wall to disable circuits one, three, and six. The Ghost returned with alarms following him. Cells opened across the level. Pokémon poured into chaos. Not as an army.
They fled, hid, attacked anyone nearby, or searched for handlers who were not there. A Growlithe dragged an injured Oddish behind cover. Two Magnemite joined the failing electrical grid. An angry Fearow struck at both uniforms. The battlefield lost whatever shape Gideon planned. Rine crossed the overlook toward the gate controls. A Rocket Grunt saw him.
"Frostfang! Generator defense!"
"On my way." The lie bought three steps. The Grunt noticed the opened cells. His rifle rose. Houndour used Bite on the weapon, tearing it sideways. Rine struck the man's throat with the pry bar and caught him before his skull hit the floor. The ease of the movement registered distantly. No time to examine it. At the console, Rine entered Lyra's bypass. > NORTH GATE UNLOCKED Gym forces surged through. Gideon triggered the explosives. The floor lifted beneath Rine. Sound disappeared.
Concrete and flame moved in slow silence. Houndour struck him midair, changing his path before debris crushed where he would have landed. He woke beneath a collapsed railing. Blood filled one eye. His left arm refused to move. Houndour lay several meters away, breathing. Gastly hovered above them, vapor shredded by the blast. Identify fought through concussion.
> Rine: Fractured clavicle; concussion; lacerations > Houndour: Moderate blunt trauma; elemental pathways stable > Gastly: Severe spectral fragmentation Gym medics entered. Rine dragged himself toward Gastly.
"Containment mist," a medic said.
"No sealed container."
"He's dispersing." Rine opened Gastly's chosen ball.
"Your choice." The Ghost barely had enough cohesion to move. He entered. The ball shook continuously. Lyra appeared through smoke, one sleeve burned away.
"The children?"
"Mara."
"Generator?" Still active. Warning lights pulsed red. The Electivire's load climbed as damaged systems demanded power. Gideon had turned the living battery into the base's final bomb. Stolen content warning: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences. Rine stood. His broken shoulder ground inside him. Lyra caught his good arm.
"You need treatment."
"So does Electivire."
"Someone else can—""Wallace won't trust someone else." The sentence came out colder than intended. Lyra looked at him and released his arm.
"I'm coming."
"Your team needs you."
"And you need someone who can move metal without using your shoulder." Houndour rose unsteadily. Rine recalled her. She resisted for a moment, then permitted it. They descended toward Level Four while Sub-Level Two burned behind them. Rine could not cross Sub-Level Two without witnessing what "acceptable losses" looked like. A Rocket Grunt lay beneath a barrier fragment, alive and unable to move. The Gym acolyte who passed him hesitated only long enough to confirm the uniform. Rine stopped.
"Help me lift this." The acolyte stared.
"He was shooting at us."
"He's unarmed now." Together they moved the fragment. The Grunt reached toward a hidden knife. Houndour growled. Rine kicked the blade away.
"You see?" the acolyte said.
"I see a frightened man making a stupid choice." They dragged him behind medical cover anyway. Thirty meters later, a freed Fearow attacked a Gym medic. Rine used Gastly's Mean Look to freeze it long enough for a nonlethal capture. The medic thanked him, then recognized the Rocket uniform and raised a restraint device. Lyra appeared between them.
"He's with me." Rine disliked the ownership implied even though she meant protection.
"I'm with the evacuation," he corrected. Lyra adjusted without argument.
"He opened the cells." The medic lowered the device. They reached the research bay containing the three Abra. Restraint helmets connected their psychic output to a signal amplifier. Disconnecting them incorrectly risked neurological damage.
"We don't have time," Lyra said. Rine heard Gideon inside the sentence. She heard it too.
"Show me the sequence," she amended. Identify marked the control order. Gastly entered the machine and disabled one relay at a time. Lyra stabilized the Abra's minds as Rine removed the helmets. One awoke, saw the chaos, and Teleported. The other two followed.
"Where did they go?" Rine asked. Lyra listened psychically.
"Anywhere else." Good answer. The delay cost seven minutes. During those minutes, Gym forces lost another corridor and Rocket technicians increased generator output. Rine accepted the cost because rescuing captives was the stated purpose of the raid. If victory required abandoning everyone inconvenient, the uniforms had changed but the logic had not. At the north gate console, the explosion shattered that moral clarity into immediate survival. When Rine woke, his first thought was not pain.
It was whether Houndour had moved him deliberately. Identify confirmed bruising along her shoulder matching the impact. She had crossed into falling debris to change his path. Rine touched her ball after recall.
"That was not an order." Warmth answered through the registration link. Choice again. Lyra supported him down the Level Four stair. Neither mentioned how her hand stayed around his good arm after balance no longer required it. Below them, Electivire screamed. The sound removed every other thought. The blast injured more than Rine could see. When hearing returned, the first sound was a Pokémon crying beneath rubble. Rine crawled past the north console and found the trapped Sandshrew. One hind leg bent incorrectly.
Lyra tried to pull him toward the stair.
"Medics are coming."
"Show me one." There were none yet. Rine used his good arm and aura perception to lift debris without shifting the broken leg. Houndour pushed beside him. Together they freed Sandshrew. The Pokémon tried to burrow into concrete. Gastly emerged weakly enough to guide it toward an open cell containing soil. Rine marked the location for medics. The delay cost ninety seconds. Those seconds mattered at the generator. So did Sandshrew. Lyra stopped arguing.
On the Level Four stair, she used Recover through Kadabra to reduce bleeding around Rine's shoulder. The move accelerated closure but could not align bone.
"You will make it worse," she said.
"Probably."
"That isn't admirable."
"I know."
"Good." At the landing, Rocket guards had barricaded the generator approach. Their commander released a Mightyena. Dark met Dark. Houndour was smaller, injured, and far lower level. Mightyena's Intimidate swept the stair, triggering prey instinct. Her body lowered. Rine did not order an attack.
"Three steps." The words returned them to the cell where trust began. Houndour focused on him. Mightyena charged. Gastly used Hypnosis from the wall. The stronger Pokémon resisted but lost half a stride. Houndour moved left. Mightyena struck the railing. Lyra disabled the guards' weapons. Rine opened their barricade release and ordered them toward the evacuation route. One obeyed. The commander attacked with a baton. Houndour placed herself between them and growled. The commander saw gold current and retreated.
No knockout. No level leap. Position, teamwork, and a reputation did enough. They reached the generator door while Mightyena recovered behind them. Rine sealed it manually. Then Electivire screamed. The Level Four stairwell contained one final injured acolyte. He sat against the wall holding a burned Kadabra. The Pokémon's spoon had melted into one hand. Retreating Gym forces had left them when the north corridor collapsed. Lyra stopped. Rine saw the conflict in her.
Continue toward Electivire or save one of her own.
"Take him up," Rine said.
"You cannot reach the generator alone."
"I have the codes."
"And one functioning arm." The acolyte attempted to stand and failed. Rine opened Houndour's ball.
"She can guide them to the medical marker." Houndour emerged and sniffed Kadabra. The Psychic-type recoiled from Dark energy.
"No attack," Rine said.
"Guide." He attached a green light to Houndour's harness. Lyra stabilized the acolyte, then placed his arm across Houndour's back without forcing her to bear full weight.
"Up," Rine commanded. Houndour looked at him. Separation during danger violated every new pack instinct.
"Your choice." She turned uphill. The acolyte followed. Rine and Lyra continued down with Gastly. Minutes later, Houndour returned alone, limping but successful. The delay brought generator load above one hundred forty percent. Rine did not regret it. If their rescue plan required Lyra to abandon her people, it would teach her the wrong lesson about working with him. At the generator door, Rine rested his forehead against Houndour's.
"Good." Golden light pulsed. They entered together. Lyra contacted Sabrina during the descent. The Gym Leader's voice entered through Kadabra rather than the token, controlled and distant.
"The children are clear," Lyra reported.
"North gate open. Generator unstable."
"Withdraw." Rine heard the command. Lyra looked at him.
"Electivire remains connected," she said.
"League personnel are approaching."
"Not fast enough," Rine answered. Silence followed. Sabrina had not invited him into the exchange, but psychic communication ignored ordinary privacy too easily.
"Rine Frostfang," she said.
"Your injuries compromise judgment."
"Probably."
"That is not an argument."
"No. Electivire's load is." He transmitted the reading. Sabrina evaluated for two seconds.
"Eight minutes."
"We need twelve."
"You have eight." The connection ended. Lyra exhaled.
"She likes you."
"Terrifying."
"Correct." They reached Level Four in seven minutes. The negotiation mattered. Sabrina had authority and better information about the raid; Rine possessed immediate knowledge of the generator. Neither received everything requested. Unlike Gideon, she gave a limit rather than demanding obedience without explanation. Rine remained suspicious. He also recognized the difference. On the landing below, a Rocket technician lay pinned beneath a collapsed conduit. His uniform carried the gray bars of Internal Security.
A pistol remained clenched in his hand. Lyra raised her spoon.
"Wait." Rine kicked the weapon beyond reach and crouched. The man's leg had been crushed above the knee. Identify supplied blood-loss estimates and a list of increasingly fatal complications.
"Leave me," the technician managed.
"Core takes priority." Rocket doctrine, spoken even while dying. Rine looped a cable beneath the conduit. Houndour pulled while Lyra braced it telekinetically. Together they lifted the metal high enough for the man to drag free.
"Why?" he whispered. Rine applied a tourniquet.
"Because I decide what takes priority." He marked the technician's location for Mara's medics and continued. The delay cost them fifty-eight seconds. Once, Rine would have called the choice inefficient. More recently, he might have killed the man to prevent a warning. Now he accepted the lost minute without pretending it carried no risk. Being better than Gideon did not mean making painless decisions. It meant refusing to call people resources when the decision hurt.
The technician caught Rine's sleeve before he left.
"Kestrel code," he said.
"Gideon uses it when he wants prisoners disposed of before evacuation." Rine memorized the phrase and transmitted it to Mara. The life he had delayed to save repaid the delay with information. He refused to treat that as proof the rescue had been worthwhile. It had been worthwhile before the man spoke. That distinction mattered.
