Chương 55: Stone Freely Given

The rematch began without a speech. Pewter Gym's main arena had been restored overnight. Fresh pillars stood where Geodude's Rollout and Onix's tail had broken the previous set. Packed earth covered the floor. Medical teams occupied both exits, and the same League cameras hovered above the boundary. Rine entered carrying his withdrawal plan. He placed the card inside the challenger box where he could see it without looking away from the field.
Tessa completed Veyra's cardiac scan, checked Morrow's cohesion, and inspected both Poké Balls.
"State your hard stops," she said. Rine did.
"Veyra leaves on an irregular rhythm, uncontrolled discharge, stability below sixty, or her withdrawal signal. Morrow leaves below sixty-five percent cohesion unless the opponent is already unable to attack. Either partner's emergency signal pauses my command sequence. A red medical state ends their battle."
"And you?"
"If I stop giving tactical commands, I pause. If the Dark veil rises to suppress concern, I surrender." Tessa looked at Veyra. Two sharp barks. Then Morrow. The Ghost formed a complete circle.
"Recorded," Tessa said. She stepped off the field. The gallery held more people than Rine expected. Niko had repaired his sign so it now read: DO NOT DIE — ALSO WIN MAYBE Selene Ward sat beside him with Bulbasaur. Mrs. Yarrow occupied the end of the row, and Mr. Mime had placed an invisible wall in front of Niko's spelling correction. Lyra sat alone in the reserved section. She did not smile. She raised one hand. Present.
Mira watched through a secure screen in the Gym office with Needle and several rescued children. Rine could not see them from the arena, but knowing they were there altered the air. Brock took his place at the opposite end.
"Same format," he said.
"Different battle."
"Understood." The referee confirmed the rules. First-badge challenge: two Pokémon each Switching permitted No battle items Victory by incapacitation or surrender Brock selected his first Poké Ball. Rine expected Geodude.
"Onix." The arena shook as the Rock Snake emerged. Its repaired tail carried a pale mineral band where Veyra had cracked the outer layer. The injury had healed. The memory had not. Veyra's current rose beside Rine. He held her ball without lifting it.
"Morrow." Gastly entered above the field. Rine activated Identify. Onix's full information remained protected by Gym registration, but the confirmed moves matched the previous battle: Tackle, Bind, Screech, and Rock Tomb. No guarantee existed beyond that. The referee lowered her flags.
"Begin!"
"Screech," Brock said. Onix moved first. The sound struck Morrow before he could prepare Disable. His vapor rippled outward, and his cohesion fell three percent. Brock had opened with the move that made every later impact more dangerous.
"Night Shade," Rine said.
"Core shape." Morrow formed a small spectral jaw.
"Rock Tomb." Onix's tail struck the field. Four stones rose.
"Move first. Keep the jaw." Morrow twisted around the first rock. The second passed through outer vapor. The third forced him lower. He retained the technique. The fourth stone struck the ground beneath him and shattered. Rock-aligned fragments tore through his gas. Morrow's cohesion dropped to eighty-one.
"Release." Night Shade expanded against Onix's face. The Rock Snake recoiled.
"Disable." Morrow's eyes flashed while the energy pattern of Rock Tomb remained fresh. Blue-white interference crossed the arena.
"Rock Tomb," Brock repeated. Onix struck the ground. Rock energy gathered around the tail, broke apart, and sank harmlessly into the field. Disable held. Niko shouted from the gallery. Mr. Mime placed a wall in front of him. Brock recalled Onix. Rine had not predicted the switch quickly enough to use Mean Look. By the time Morrow's eyes widened, red light had already taken the Rock Snake. Geodude entered. Fresh Pokémon. Fresh move pattern. No Disable.
"Rock Throw."
"Switch." Rine did not wait for the favorable matchup to become dangerous. Morrow crossed the recall line as Geodude tore a stone free. Veyra entered low and moving. The rock passed above her back. If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation. Gold flickered beneath her pale bands. The Ground-type presence tightened her Electric core, but no discharge escaped.
"Howl." Veyra's voice crossed the arena. Power gathered through muscle rather than electricity.
"Defense Curl," Brock said. Geodude pulled his arms inward. Rock energy reinforced the rounded body. Both sides prepared.
"Smog, low." Dark vapor spread across the ground.
"Rock Throw, three points." Geodude did not need to see Veyra. He threw at the left edge, center, and right, denying paths instead of targeting her body. The first stone broke behind her. The second forced her center. Rine recognized the corridor Brock had created.
"Stop." Veyra planted her paws. The third stone passed across the route she would have taken. Geodude's fist followed behind it.
"Bite the wrist. Release on pull." Veyra lunged. Her jaws closed around the narrow joint between Geodude's hand and arm. Howl-enhanced force cracked the outer mineral layer. Geodude pulled. Veyra released instantly. No broken teeth. No fall.
"Rollout," Brock said. Geodude curled and accelerated through the Smog.
"Call." Veyra's two-note self-call returned from the vapor. Rollout curved toward her.
"Roar across him." She directed the sound at an angle rather than meeting force with force. The pressure struck Geodude's exposed side. It did not stop the attack. It changed the line. Geodude clipped a pillar. Rock Head protected him from the worst recoil, but the collision broke Rollout's rhythm and exposed the damaged wrist.
"Bite. Same place." Veyra attacked. Geodude swung with his other fist. The blow struck her shoulder. Rock energy drove her into the earth. Her medical indicator remained green. One bark. Continue. Rine checked the plan. Second heavy impact required a mandatory status check. This was the first.
"Howl, close." Veyra's voice vibrated through Geodude at contact range. His Defense Curl loosened. Her teeth closed once more. The damaged wrist gave way enough to break his balance. Geodude struck the ground and attempted to rise with one functioning arm. Brock watched. The referee watched. Geodude pushed once, then lowered his head. The flag rose.
"Geodude is unable to continue!" Veyra released immediately and stepped back. The gallery erupted. Rine heard none of it clearly. He checked her. Condition: moderate shoulder bruising Mutation Stability: 61% Cardiac rhythm: elevated; regular Battle capacity: reduced but safe Brock recalled Geodude. Onix returned. Disable had ended during the switch interval.
"Morrow," Rine said. Veyra crossed the line. Gastly emerged at seventy-nine percent cohesion. Onix carried Night Shade damage but remained dangerous. His tail moved more carefully around the healed band.
"Rock Tomb," Brock said.
"Confuse Ray." Morrow's eyes pulsed as the stones rose. Onix closed his eyes. The ray struck anyway. Confusion entered through elemental contact rather than ordinary sight, but closing his eyes reduced the disorienting visual layer. Onix completed Rock Tomb. Morrow dodged the first two rocks. The third clipped his core. Sixty-nine percent.
"Night Shade." The spectral jaw remained small.
"Screech." Onix's cry distorted it. Morrow struggled to hold the shape.
"Release now." The reduced Night Shade struck Onix's neck. Less damage than planned. Enough. Morrow's cohesion fell to sixty-four. The field remained open. Onix was confused and damaged. Another Night Shade might end the battle. Rine initiated the switch. Morrow stared at him.
"Sixty-five was the line." The Ghost looked toward Onix.
"We wrote it before we wanted this." Morrow's frustration pressed through their bond. Then he crossed the recall line. Veyra entered. The crowd's sound changed. They had seen the same opening Rine abandoned. Brock's expression did not.
"Rock Tomb." Onix struck while confusion pulled his aim slightly right.
"Use the first stone." Veyra ran toward the falling rock. It struck at an angle and broke. She used the lower half as a step, launching above the second stone.
"Ember, eyes." The flame was controlled and medically permitted. Onix turned his head. Fire scattered harmlessly across stone armor, doing little direct damage but stealing his view of Veyra's landing. She came down beside the neck segment Morrow's Night Shade had struck.
"Bite." Her jaws closed in the seam. Onix twisted. Veyra released before the motion threw her. The plan held.
"Bind," Brock said. Onix curved around her.
"Back left." Veyra moved. Confusion changed Onix's angle, but not enough. Stone coils closed around her hindquarters. She gave one pain bark. Rine's victory narrowed to the damaged seam beside her jaws. One bite could finish it. The thought arrived clean, reasonable, and unacceptable.
"Exit. Roar at the inner curve." Veyra inhaled against the pressure. Her directed roar struck the closest segment from inside the coil. The vibration traveled through Onix's body and disrupted the muscle-like force holding each stone section in alignment. A gap opened.
"Out." Veyra pulled free. She did not attack the exposed seam. She crossed three meters of open field and turned to face Onix. Rine looked at the monitor. Mutation Stability: 60% Cardiac rhythm: elevated; regular Condition: bruising increased Partner signal: awaiting decision At the threshold. Not below.
"Do you want one more exchange?" he asked. Veyra looked at Onix. Then at Rine. One bark. Yes. He looked toward Tessa. No stop signal.
"One exchange." Brock heard.
"Onix, Rock Tomb." The Rock Snake raised his tail. Confusion ended. His aim became precise. Four stones rose, arranged to close every direct route to his damaged neck. Rine did not call an attack.
"Find the way out." Veyra ran. The first stone blocked left. She changed direction before it landed. The second forced her back. The third descended directly above.
"Roar, ground!" Sound struck the packed earth. Dust and broken Smog surged upward, hiding her beneath the third impact. The stone landed. Veyra was not under it. She had used the recoil from her own roar to throw herself sideways through the narrow gap between the second and fourth rocks. Onix turned too late.
"Howl." The call strengthened her final stride.
"Bite. Neck seam. Release if he moves." Veyra jumped. Her jaws found the place Night Shade had weakened. Dark energy—not Fire, not Electricity—gathered around her teeth in a controlled edge. She bit. The mineral seam cracked. Onix tried to lift his head. His forebody failed to follow. The enormous Pokémon settled across the field, eyes open but balance gone. Veyra released before he struck the ground. The medical team watched for movement. Onix attempted to rise once. Brock raised his hand.
"Enough." The referee's flags crossed.
"Onix is unable to continue. The match is awarded to Challenger Rine Frostfang!" For several seconds, Rine did not understand the words. Then the scoreboard changed. WINNER: RINE FROSTFANG PEWTER GYM CHALLENGE: PASSED Veyra stood in the center of the field, sides heaving. The instant the referee cleared him, Morrow burst from his ball and wrapped Veyra in cold violet vapor. She snapped at him without force. He projected a crown large enough to cover Onix. Medical staff reached both Pokémon.
Rine waited until the field officer waved him forward. That mattered too. Veyra's heart remained regular. Her stability held at sixty. Morrow required rest but no stabilization. Geodude's wrist had fractured along the outer layer without damaging the living core and would heal beneath mineral wrap. Onix's neck seam needed repair, not surgery. Everyone lived. This time, Rine had won. Brock met him at the center after the medical clearance.
The Boulder Badge rested in his palm: a small grey octagon cut to resemble a many-sided stone. It looked simpler than Rine remembered from Earth. It also looked real.
"A badge does not certify that you will never make the same mistake," Brock said.
"It records that today, under these conditions, you demonstrated the standard required to carry it." No destiny. No absolution. Evidence. Brock offered the badge. Rine did not take it immediately. He looked at Veyra and Morrow. Veyra touched the stone with her nose. Morrow passed one eye through it and declared the craftsmanship acceptable with a green circle. Rine accepted. The gallery stood. Niko struck Mr. Mime's invisible wall with his sign and broke the second E off maybe. Selene laughed. Mrs.
Yarrow corrected the remaining word in red marker. Lyra placed two fingers against the viewing glass, the same gesture she had offered after his loss. Present. Rine lifted the badge toward her. Not proof that he was good. Not proof that she forgave him. A stone earned without turning his partners into tools. That was enough weight for one hand. The ceremony lasted twelve minutes. League staff recorded the badge, updated Rine's provisional license, and scheduled a medical follow-up.
Brock waived the usual advice about traveling immediately.
"You are going south," he said.
"After Veyra rests." The answer came without struggle. Brock nodded. Lyra met Rine outside the arena. For a moment, neither knew what belonged after everything already said.
"Was it like your game?" she asked.
"No."
"Nothing?"
"Brock still talked too much after losing."
"Careful," Brock said from behind them. Rine almost smiled. Then his communication token sounded. The alert carried Iron Talon priority encryption. Iona's face appeared. Dirt streaked one cheek. Zubat clung to her shoulder, trembling with exhaustion.
"We found a second tunnel," she said.
"It runs beneath the Vermilion power exchange. Zubat heard tapping behind a sealed maintenance wall." Mara moved in the background with armored hunters. Iona's voice broke once.
"It's Milo's pattern." The world narrowed. Rine felt the old command assemble: move now, ignore pain, become the weapon the moment required. Veyra leaned against his leg, exhausted but standing. Morrow formed a door. Lyra waited. Rine looked at the newly recorded badge, then at the medical limits beside Veyra's name.
"Send the maps," he said.
"Do not breach until the ventilation team checks the wall. We leave when Veyra is cleared to travel." Mara's voice came through the connection.
"Already ordered. We need your knowledge, not another casualty." Rine breathed. Iona pressed one hand over her eyes.
"He's alive," she said. Not safe. Not rescued. Alive. Rine closed his hand around the Boulder Badge. The first stone on his journey did not mark the end of Team Rocket's road. It marked the point where he could choose how to walk it.
