Mara entered beneath the observation desk. The welded hatch opened into a maintenance cavity barely wider than her shoulders. She pulled herself through, rolled behind a bank of monitors, and raised her sidearm. The two men did not notice. Every screen in the booth had turned red when Surge cut the feeder. The civilian technician slapped the control panel, trying to restore the ventilation system. The Rocket guard faced the dormitory window with his handgun drawn. Raticate noticed.
Its whiskers turned toward the open hatch.
"Behind!" the guard shouted. Raticate lunged. Mara fired a restraint capsule. The expanding net caught one foreleg instead of the body. Raticate twisted in midair, hit the desk, and tore free before the electrical filaments activated. Zubat shot through the hatch.
"Supersonic!" Iona called. Sound struck the booth at close range. Raticate staggered, claws scraping across the floor. The civilian technician covered his ears. The guard did not. Dark plugs filled both canals. Prepared. He fired at the hatch. Mara struck his wrist psychically. Not Mara. Lyra had entered behind her, one hand raised while Kadabra held the hatch pressure trigger below. The bullet hit a monitor and filled the booth with sparks.
"Ventilation override!" the technician shouted. His hand reached a guarded lever. Rine used Identify. Emergency purge Current routing: dormitory Stored compound: Paras spore concentrate Manual release armed"Stop his left hand!" Mara kicked the back of the technician's knee. He fell before touching the lever. She pinned his arm against the console and locked a restraint around his wrist. The booth was not secure, but the armed purge system made holding the support team below more dangerous than advancing it.
Mara gave a two-finger signal toward the hatch. Rine climbed first. Iona followed with Zubat circling above her. Their assigned positions changed because the room had changed, not because fear erased the plan. Raticate recovered. Its eyes fixed on Iona.
"Hyper Fang!" the guard ordered. The rat's incisors brightened with Normal energy. It drove toward her throat. Morrow emerged through the floor. The attack passed through his Ghost body without contact.
"Payback," Rine said. Dark force gathered from the hostile move and struck Raticate beneath the jaw. It flipped backward. Zubat followed with Wing Attack, knocking the Pokémon away from Iona without driving it into the wall. Raticate tried to rise. Morrow's red eyes expanded.
"Mean Look." The Pokémon froze. Not controlled. Unable to flee. The distinction mattered less to a terrified animal.
"No more attacks," Rine said. Morrow held position. The Rocket guard reached the dormitory door. Lyra attempted to catch him. Psychic energy struck the shielding around the frame and scattered. The man slapped his palm against the emergency plate. The door opened. Forced sleep rolled out. The pressure hit Rine's Dark veil and spread around it like water against oil. Iona stumbled. Mara's weapon lowered. One Iron Talon hunter fell to a knee. Lyra remained upright through raw control. Blood appeared beneath her nose.
The guard entered the room. Rine followed. Nine bunks filled the dormitory, exactly as Morrow had shown. Children stirred beneath the collapsing Hypnosis. Some cried without waking. Others stared toward the door with the empty focus of people who had learned movement brought attention. Drowzee convulsed inside the restraint frame. The collar continued commanding Hypnosis despite the power loss. A local cell had activated, driving current through the Pokémon's neck. The guard grabbed Milo.
Iona's brother weighed almost nothing in his hands. He pulled the boy against his chest and pressed the handgun beneath Milo's jaw. Iona stopped in the doorway.
"Let him go."
"Back into the booth," the guard said.
"All of you." His voice remained steady. If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it. His aura did not. Rine felt the pulse in the man's arm through his own developing control. Fear shortened the breath. Training kept the finger outside the trigger guard for now. The weapon's angle covered Milo, Iona, and part of Lyra. Mara could not shoot. Kadabra remained below the hatch, holding the electrical trigger. Morrow faced Raticate. Veyra could not battle.
The guard saw every visible threat. Rine pulled Dark energy around himself. Not through his mind. Around his presence. Psychic perception slid away. Ordinary attention followed the stronger sources of danger: Mara's gun, Lyra's power, Iona's desperation. Rine took one step along the wall. Then another. The guard tightened his arm around Milo.
"I said back!" Milo's eyes moved. He saw Rine. Recognition flickered where none should exist. Eli's drawings had shown a white-haired boy and black dog. Rocket staff had used Rine's image as promise, threat, or both. Milo did not react. Smart. Rine reached the final blind angle. He could attack the wrist. The man might fire. He could use aura pressure. Rine's control was too weak. He could wait for Lyra. Drowzee screamed as the collar delivered another shock. The guard's attention moved toward the sound.
Rine drew his field knife. One step. His left hand closed over the weapon. The blade entered beneath the guard's jaw. Rine pulled Milo away before the body fell. The handgun struck the floor. No second shot. No dramatic final words. One moment contained a living obstacle. The next contained a dead man. Rine felt nothing. That was worse than blood. Milo tore free of him and crawled beneath a bunk. Iona crossed the room.
"Milo." He raised both hands over his head. She stopped before touching him. Drowzee screamed again. Lyra turned toward the restraint frame.
"The collar is burning through her psychic channels." Rine forced his attention away from the body. Identify struck the device. Neural compliance collar — Psychic-series prototype Command loop: Hypnosis / Wake / Hypnosis Emergency behavior: increase output until response Primary release: encrypted Mechanical release: rear-left hinge Warning: opening under active command may cause psychic recoil"Morrow!" Rine called. The Ghost left Raticate.
Mara's second restraint net took his place, pinning the Pokémon without shocking it. Morrow entered the dormitory. Forced Hypnosis struck him. As a Poison-type, Gastly possessed no protection against Psychic energy. His core distorted. Cohesion fell from seventy-four to sixty-nine in one pulse.
"Find the pattern," Rine said.
"Disable." Drowzee's eyes glowed beneath the metal band. The collar sent the command. Hypnosis formed. Morrow watched the energy travel through damaged channels and emerge through eyes the restraint would not permit to close. Blue-white interference flashed. Hypnosis broke. The collar commanded again. Nothing formed. Disable: Novice, 6% The device responded by increasing current.
"Hinge!" Rine shouted. Lyra caught Drowzee's head between both hands without touching it. Psychic force stabilized the Pokémon's consciousness while Rine climbed the frame. The mechanical hinge sat beneath fur burned short by the collar. He inserted the knife. His hand remained steady. The same blade had just ended a human life. Now its tip searched for a release pin without cutting skin. Rine twisted. Metal opened. Psychic pressure exploded.
Kadabra entered the room in a flash as soon as Mara took control of the hatch trigger. A translucent screen appeared around the children. Lyra redirected the recoil upward. Concrete cracked across the ceiling. Morrow compressed around his core. Drowzee collapsed into Rine's arms. She was heavier than she looked. The room became quiet. Not the enforced quiet of Hypnosis. The uncertain quiet after a machine stopped telling frightened bodies what to feel. Rine lowered Drowzee onto the nearest mattress.
The girl beside the frame moved with him, keeping one hand around the Pokémon's fingers. A white plastic tag hung from the child's neck. V-04 No name. The other children wore the same tags. Rine had seen numbers replace names in Rocket laboratories, mission files, and inventory screens. The system made cruelty easier by turning a person into a position on a list. He reached toward the tag, then stopped.
"May I take this off?" The girl stared at him. Forced Hypnosis still slowed her understanding. After several breaths, she nodded. Rine broke the plastic clasp.
"What is your name?" Her mouth moved without sound.
"You don't have to answer."
"Tara." He placed the tag facedown.
"Tara," he repeated. The name traveled through the room. One boy whispered his own. Another clutched his tag with both hands and refused to let anyone touch it. Rine left it in place. Freedom did not require every child to make the same symbolic choice on command. Morrow descended beside Drowzee. Cohesion: 66% Condition: psychic abrasion; stable Disable: Novice One point above the withdrawal line. Rine recalled him. The Ghost resisted for half a second, looking toward the children.
"You opened the door," Rine said.
"Rest." Morrow entered the ball. Mara cleared the observation booth, then called the waiting medics. No one rushed into the dormitory until Lyra confirmed that Drowzee's recoil had ended and ventilation technicians verified the spore valves were sealed. The delay lasted less than a minute. To Rine, it felt longer than the train from Pewter. He used aura rather than Identify to count the children. Nine living patterns. Two weak from dehydration. One pulse irregular from panic. None fading. The distinction mattered.
Identify could reduce each child to condition, potential, and quantified damage. Aura reminded him that information belonged to someone alive. Tara began pulling blankets from the other bunks.
"What are you doing?" Lyra asked gently.
"Shoes," Tara said. She pointed beneath the mattresses. The children's shoes had been collected every night and locked inside a low cabinet so escape required crossing cold utility tunnels barefoot. The key remained on the dead guard. Rine's gaze moved toward the doorway. Still nothing. No satisfaction. No disgust. Only the location of a useful object. He made himself say the truth aloud.
"The key is on the guard." Mara retrieved it. They opened the cabinet. Some shoes no longer matched their owners. Two pairs had blood dried inside from untreated blisters. Medics replaced them with insulated evacuation socks rather than forcing children into the wrong sizes. Small choices accumulated. Ask before removing the tag. Say the name. Wait for clean air. Do not make injured feet prove they can walk. Team Rocket built systems from thousands of minor cruelties.
Rescue required equal attention in the other direction. Children woke. One began screaming. Another vomited over the side of a bunk. A girl near the wall crawled toward Drowzee despite her own shaking and touched the Pokémon's hand.
"She didn't want to," the girl said.
"They made her."
"I know," Rine replied. Medical teams entered after Mara cleared the booth. Ventilation technicians sealed the spore tank. Hunters secured the civilian technician and sedated Raticate only after the Pokémon injured itself fighting the net. Veyra's ball burned against Rine's chest. The immediate threat had ended. He released her. She emerged without lightning or flame, recovery harness visible beneath her chest. Her nose moved across disinfectant, fear, blood, and the bitter scent of Drowzee's burns.
Several children recoiled from her. Veyra lay down. She made herself smaller and waited. One boy stared at the recovery harness.
"Is she broken?" Veyra's ears flattened.
"Injured," Rine said.
"Healing."
"They throw away broken ones." The sentence contained no accusation. It was a rule he had been taught.
"We don't."
"What if she can't fight?"
"Then she doesn't fight." Veyra looked at Rine. The answer required no consultation because the decision had been made long before this room. The boy studied her teeth.
"Does she bite?"
"Yes." Lyra gave Rine a look.
"He deserves an honest warning," Rine said.
"She bites enemies, training equipment, Morrow when he is irritating, and food she has already been told belongs to someone else." Veyra huffed. The boy's mouth twitched.
"She will not bite you for being afraid," Rine added. That was the permission he needed. Tara approached first. She touched one pale band along Veyra's back. Gold remained dark beneath it. One by one, the room began moving. Blankets came off bunks. Medics distributed breathing masks. Names replaced bed numbers. Milo stayed beneath the lowest bunk. Iona sat on the floor two meters away. She did not reach for him again. Zubat crawled from her shoulder and settled upside down beneath the bunk frame.
Its ears turned toward Milo, listening to his breath without looking at him. After several minutes, Milo tapped the pipe. Three. Are you listening? Iona placed her knuckles against the floor. One. Yes. Milo's hand emerged from the darkness. It did not reach for her. It rested on the concrete between them. Iona lowered her hand beside his without touching. Rine watched from across the room. The rescue had opened the door. It had not restored everything waiting behind it.
