The black gate hung above Ayanor. It was enormous. Silent. Impossible. Beyond it stood a young man who looked exactly like Rayan. Same black hair. Same golden eyes. Same sharp features. But there was something fundamentally different about him. His eyes contained no warmth. Only emptiness. Siena tightened her grip on her weapon.
"Who are you?" The stranger smiled.
"I have many names." His gaze shifted toward Rayan.
"But he knows the one that matters." Rayan stared at him.
"What are you?" The stranger stepped forward.
"I am the possibility you abandoned." The words struck Rayan harder than any attack.
"You aren't me." The stranger laughed.
"Of course not." He raised one hand. Black and golden energy spiraled around his fingers.
"I am what you could have become." Rayan's expression hardened.
"The version that chose power." The stranger nodded.
"The version that never surrendered the Dharma." He looked toward the World Tree.
"The version that refused to let others decide the future." Eshan stood behind Rayan. His golden-black flame reacted violently. The stranger noticed.
"So..." His eyes focused on the boy.
"The new vessel." Rayan immediately stepped between them.
"Don't touch him." The stranger smiled.
"Protective." Rayan raised Shadowbreaker.
"I don't need to remember everything to know when someone is a threat." For the first time... The stranger's smile disappeared.
"Then perhaps you truly have changed." A pulse of black energy exploded from the gate. Siena summoned her Lotus Astra. Golden petals spread across the city. Kael's flames erupted. Caelum froze the air. Aster's crimson threads connected the warriors. The people of Ayanor began evacuating. But the stranger didn't attack. Instead... He looked at them.
"Do you understand what your precious new age actually created?" Rayan said nothing.
"The Dharma fragments gave everyone freedom."
"Yes."
"And freedom creates possibilities."
"Yes."
"Every possibility creates a shadow." The stranger raised his hand. Black images appeared across the sky. Worlds where humanity had destroyed itself. Worlds where kings abused Dharma. Worlds where Astra users became tyrants. Worlds where freedom had created endless war. Rayan watched silently. The stranger spoke.
"You gave creation unlimited choices."
"Some of those choices were beautiful." His eyes darkened.
"Others were horrifying." Siena stepped forward.
"That doesn't mean we surrender our freedom." The stranger looked at her.
"Exactly." He smiled.
"That's why you're interesting." Rayan moved between them.
"Enough." The stranger laughed.
"Still protecting everyone." Rayan tightened his grip on Shadowbreaker.
"Someone has to."
"No." The stranger shook his head.
"That's your old mistake." He pointed toward the people behind Rayan.
"You still think you must carry everything." Rayan looked around. The people of Ayanor were not hiding. Warriors were standing beside civilians. Astra users were protecting the wounded. Ordinary people were helping each other. Nobody was waiting for Rayan to save them. The stranger noticed. His expression changed.
"Interesting." Eshan suddenly stepped forward.
"I'll fight." Rayan turned.
"No."
"But—""You don't know what your power is yet." Eshan looked at the stranger.
"I don't need to." His golden-black flame expanded.
"I know what I want." The stranger stared at him.
"What?" Eshan answered:"I don't want to become you." Silence. The stranger's eyes narrowed.
"Then what will you become?" Eshan looked at Rayan. Then Siena. Then the people of Ayanor.
"Someone who chooses for himself." The stranger laughed.
"Good answer." He raised his hand. The black gate began closing. Rayan stepped forward.
"You're leaving?"
"Not yet." The stranger looked toward the northern horizon.
"There's something you should see first." A black mark appeared over the World Tree. The entire tree began glowing. Sophia suddenly screamed.
"Rayan!"
"What?"
"The Origin Core!" A crack appeared at its center. The stranger smiled.
"The Core has begun choosing." Rayan's eyes narrowed.
"Choosing what?" The stranger looked directly at him.
"Who gets to write the next age." The black gate disappeared. The stranger vanished with it. The sky returned to normal. But the crack remained. Rayan looked at Eshan. Then at Sophia.
"Can it be repaired?" Sophia shook her head.
"No."
"Can it be destroyed?"
"No."
"Then what happens?" Sophia looked frightened.
"The Origin Core will choose a new central authority." Rayan's expression changed.
"One ruler again?"
"Perhaps." Rayan looked toward the people below. He remembered the lesson of Dharma. No absolute ruler. No single authority. No one person controlling creation. He raised Shadowbreaker.
"Then we stop it." Siena smiled.
"Together?" Rayan nodded.
"Together." Far above them... The crack in the Origin Core widened. And from inside it... A new golden eye opened. The golden eye opened inside the Origin Core. Rayan stared at it. It wasn't like the Dreamers. It wasn't like the Outer Void. It felt... Familiar. Too familiar. Siena stepped closer.
"Rayan?" He didn't answer. The eye was looking directly at him. Then a voice echoed across the World Tree.
"Dharma Heir." Rayan tightened his grip on Shadowbreaker.
"I gave up that title."
"Titles are irrelevant."
"You are still the first choice." Royal Road is the home of this novel. Visit there to read the original and support the author. Rayan frowned.
"The first choice?" The eye pulsed.
"The first being who rejected absolute authority."
"Therefore, you are the only one capable of deciding who should inherit it." Rayan's expression hardened.
"So you want me to choose a ruler."
"Yes."
"No." The answer came instantly. The golden eye went silent. Rayan looked toward the people below.
"I already made that mistake once." Sophia stepped forward.
"You didn't make a mistake." Rayan looked at her.
"You gave everyone freedom."
"And now the Core wants someone to control it again." Sophia nodded.
"That's the problem." The World Tree began shaking. Golden roots rose from the ground. Each root carried a different possibility. A king. A council. A god. A chosen hero. A celestial being. Even Rayan. Every possible ruler appeared above the roots. Eshan stared at them.
"Why does it need someone?" Sophia answered.
"Because creation fears uncertainty." Rayan looked at the countless possibilities.
"Then creation has to learn."
"Learn what?"
"That uncertainty isn't weakness." He pointed toward the golden roots.
"It's freedom." Suddenly... One of the roots turned black. Then another. The stranger's voice echoed from the empty sky.
"And that is why you will fail." Rayan looked upward. The black gate reopened. The Other Rayan stepped through. This time... He wasn't alone. Behind him stood thousands of shadow warriors. Each one carried a distorted Astra. The stranger raised his hand.
"Every choice creates a possibility." The shadows spread across the sky.
"And every possibility creates someone who disagrees." Rayan raised Shadowbreaker.
"So?" The Other Rayan smiled.
"So your new world is already at war." The shadow army descended. Siena moved first. Her Lotus Astra exploded across the battlefield. Golden petals became blades. Kael's flames tore through the shadows. Caelum froze entire formations. Aster's threads captured dozens at once. The people of Ayanor joined the defense. Dharma fragments awakened throughout the city. But something was different. The shadow warriors weren't mindless. They were people. Possible versions of people. Versions who had chosen different futures.
Rayan stopped mid-attack. One shadow warrior looked exactly like Kael. Another resembled Siena. Another looked like Rayan. They weren't enemies from another world. They were possibilities. Rayan lowered his sword.
"We can't kill them." Kael stared at him.
"Then what do we do?" Rayan looked toward the countless versions.
"We give them a choice." Rayan stepped forward. He released his grip on Shadowbreaker. The sword fell. Everyone stared. The Other Rayan laughed.
"You're surrendering?"
"No." Rayan raised his empty hand.
"I'm refusing to become you." Golden Dharma energy appeared around him. Not a weapon. A bridge. The golden light touched the nearest shadow warrior. The warrior froze. Memories flooded into it. Choices. Regrets. Dreams. The warrior dropped its weapon.
"I..." It looked at its hands.
"... don't want this." Another shadow warrior lowered its weapon. Then another. The army began collapsing. Not because Rayan defeated them. Because they chose differently. The Other Rayan's expression finally changed.
"You..." Rayan looked at him.
"You created them." The stranger's eyes narrowed.
"You gave them choices." Rayan nodded.
"And they chose." One by one... The shadow warriors disappeared into golden light. Not destroyed. Returned to possibility. The Other Rayan stared at Rayan. For the first time... He looked uncertain.
"You've changed." Rayan smiled.
"So have you."
"No." The stranger shook his head.
"I haven't." He looked toward Eshan.
"I was created for one purpose."
"What purpose?"
"To prove that Dharma cannot survive without a counterbalance." Eshan's Astra suddenly erupted. Gold and black flames filled the sky. Rayan looked at him.
"Eshan!" The boy screamed. The Origin Core responded. The golden eye turned toward him.
"SECOND CHOICE DETECTED." The entire World Tree went silent. The Other Rayan smiled.
"Now you understand." Rayan stared.
"What?" The stranger pointed toward Eshan.
"The Core doesn't want a king."
"It wants a balance." Dharma energy surrounded Eshan's body. Void energy surrounded the Other Rayan. Two opposing forces. Two choices. Two futures. Rayan finally understood. The final conflict wasn't between good and evil. It was between Dharma and Void. Order and possibility. Creation and erasure. And neither could exist alone. The Other Rayan opened his hand.
"Come." Rayan picked up Shadowbreaker. Siena stood beside him. Eshan stepped forward. Kael raised his sword. Caelum prepared his Astra. Aster's crimson threads spread across the heavens. Rayan looked toward the two impossible powers. Then smiled.
"Fine." He raised Shadowbreaker.
"If the future needs a balance..."
"... we'll decide what that balance becomes." The Origin Core erupted. The World Tree split into two enormous branches. One golden. One black. And between them... A third path began forming. A path no prophecy had ever predicted. Rayan stared at it.
"What's that?" Sophia whispered:"The path of humanity." The third path began glowing. And somewhere beyond the universe... The Outer Void opened its eye once more. This time... It smiled. To be continue....
