The chamber of the Land of Darkness was a monument to eternal stillness. Black, jagged pillars of volcanic glass reached toward a sky choked with violet ash, casting long, razor-sharp shadows across the polished obsidian floor. In the center of this desolate hall, Salem stood alone. Her pale, marble-white skin was stark against her flowing black robes, and the crimson veins pulsing beneath her temples hummed with the slow, ancient rhythm of her malice.
Floating directly before her, suspended in a sphere of dim, violet light, was the Seer. The jellyfish-like Grimm's translucent, bulbous crest pulsed slowly, its long, thread-like tendrils drifting in the air like dark ink in water. Within the Seer's single, bulbous central eye, a projection of the Emerald Forest flickered to life. Salem watched in absolute, unbroken silence.
The recording played the exact sequence she had orchestrated: the massive, unnatural gathering of alpha Ursai, mutated Beringels, King Taijitus, and elder Death Stalkers. It had been her deliberate test. By channeling her negative will across the sea, she had forced these highly territorial, apex Grimm to ignore their basic instincts and swarm the isolated sector of the forest in a coordinated, crushing wave. Then, the projection showed the bald man in the green janitorial jumpsuit.
Salem's dark, red-ringed eyes narrowed slightly as she watched the man casually slap an alpha Ursa into a shockwave of dissolving black vapor. She watched him step forward, defying every physical law of momentum, turning five-ton Beringels into expanding clouds of ash with effortless, careless strikes. But it was the next moment that caused the ancient queen's hands to slowly tighten into claws beneath her sleeves.
On the projection, an elder Death Stalker violently thrust its golden stinger forward, striking the bald man directly on the top of his head. The impact resounded with a heavy metallic clang, and then, the iron-hard stinger of the apex Grimm simply shattered, fracturing up its own tail. The man did not slide back. He did not bleed. He did not even project a single flicker of active Aura.
He merely scratched his head, complained about his uniform, and casually ripped the creature's colossal claw off with his bare hand. With a flick of Salem's wrist, the projection froze, leaving the image of the bald man's blank, unbothered face hanging in the dark room.
"What... are you?" Salem whispered, her voice a low, melodic chime that carried no warmth, only a cold, clinical curiosity. She paced slowly around the frozen holographic image, her black train whispering against the smooth obsidian. For thousands of years, she had watched the rise and fall of humanity. She knew the limits of their souls, the fragile boundaries of their Aura, and the predictable nature of their Semblances. Even Ozpin, in all his reincarnated lives, was bound by the rules of this world's magic.
But this entity was an absolute void.
"No Aura. No Semblance. No trace of the Brother Gods' design," Salem murmured, reaching out a pale, dark-veined hand to touch the projection of Saitama's face. Her fingers passed through the light.
"You do not fight like a protector. You do not even possess the fear that gives my Grimm their strength. You exist outside the board entirely." She closed her eyes, her mind analyzing the tactical reality. A direct military siege on Vale was no longer a viable path to securing the Relic of Choice. To send her hordes against this man was to feed a meat grinder. The variable had to be contained, isolated, and ignored. The strategy had to shift.
If the shield of Vale could not be broken, then the rest of the world would have to burn in silence.
Across the sea, within the kingdom of Mistral, the atmosphere inside the Headmaster's office at Haven Academy was suffocatingly tense. The grand room, circular and lined with high arched windows overlooking the sparkling terraced city below, felt like a gilded cage. Leonardo Lionheart, the formidable but thoroughly broken lion Faunus, sat slumped behind his massive mahogany desk.
His golden-brown mane was disheveled, and his hands trembled so violently that the tea in his porcelain cup sloshed over the rim, staining his pristine green vestments. Standing near the balcony doors, leaning casually against the stone frame, was Arthur Watts. His immaculate grey tailcoat was spotless, his mustache neatly trimmed, and his arms crossed with a cold, superior air of clinical detachment.
On the opposite side of the room, Tyrian Callows paced like a caged predator, his long, metallic scorpion tail twitching erratically behind him, his yellow eyes wide and gleaming with an unstable, manic energy. The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
"L-Look, I have done everything you've asked!" Lionheart pleaded, his voice cracking as he looked between the two agents of Salem.
"I have redirected the patrol schedules! I have filed the false reports to the council! But the teachers... the local Huntsmen... they are starting to ask questions about the missing scouting parties!"
"Then let them ask, Leonardo," Watts said, his voice a smooth, mocking drawl. He adjusted the cuffs of his sleeves without looking at the headmaster.
"And then, in your infinite wisdom as their trusted leader, you will provide them with answers that lead them directly into a ditch. It really is a very simple administrative process."
"Hahahaha! He trembles! Look at him shake!" Tyrian cackled, his body twisting in a grotesque, mocking bow as he got right into Lionheart's face, his breath hot against the headmaster's nose.
"The great Lion of Haven, reduced to a shivering mouse! Does the dark scare you, Leo? Does the thought of our Goddess's touch make your fur stand on end?!" Before Lionheart could recoil, the space in the center of the office began to distort. A dark, violet mist coalesced, and a Seer Grimm floated into the room, its central eye glowing with an intense, burning crimson light.
Tyrian immediately dropped to his knees, his forehead pressing against the carpet, his manic laughter instantly replaced by a whimpering, fanatical devotion.
"My Goddess! You grace us with your magnificent presence!" Watts bowed his head sharply, his arrogant posture smoothing into a respectful stance.
"Mistress." Lionheart scrambled out of his chair, nearly knocking his tea set to the floor as he sank to his knees, his head bowed so low his nose nearly touched his desk.
"S-Salem. I... I am at your disposal, as always."
"Rise, Leonardo," Salem's voice echoed from the Seer, carrying an icy authority that made the lion Faunus shiver. Lionheart slowly raised his head, his eyes wide with terror.
"The... the operations in Vale, Mistress? Has the Academy fallen?"
"Vale is secure under its own... peculiar measures," Salem replied coldly, her voice dismissing the kingdom entirely.
"We shall let them play their games of reconstruction. Our focus shifts entirely to Mistral. Leonardo, the time for half-measures has ended. You are to systematically neutralize Haven's defensive capabilities. Assemble your active Huntsmen under the guise of an emergency defensive border sweep. Send them into the deep valleys of the outer territories."
"A-And then?" Lionheart whispered, swallow hard.
"And then, Tyrian will ensure they never return," Salem commanded. Tyrian let out a high-pitched, ecstatic squeal, his metallic tail whipping through the air, nearly nicking the mahogany desk.
"Oh, thank you, Mistress! Thank you! I shall paint the mountains in their blood! Not a single one of them will draw breath by the time the moon rises!"
"Arthur," Salem continued, her gaze shifting to Watts.
"Your mechanical subversion of Haven's network is complete. You are to depart immediately. Cinder has already recovered from her... setbacks. You will accompany her to the mountains. Find the tribe of Raven Branwen. She possesses the Spring Maiden, and she will give her to us, willingly or otherwise."
"A logical progression," Watts said, a cold smirk touching his lips as he bowed again.
"Cinder's petulance can be... difficult to manage, but I shall ensure the acquisition of the Maiden proceeds with absolute scientific precision."
"And what of me, Mistress?" Lionheart asked, his voice trembling as he looked at the floating Seer.
"What do I do when the kingdom realizes its defenders are gone?"
"You will sit in your high tower, Leonardo, and you will wait for us to arrive," Salem said softly, her voice carrying a terrifying promise of finality.
"Do your part, and you shall survive the winter." With a soft hum, the connection severed, leaving the Seer floating silently in the center of the room, its eye turning dark.
Deep within an abandoned, rain-slicked industrial refinery on the muddy banks of Mistral's lower docks, another Seer Grimm hovered over a rusted steel barrel. Hazel Rainart stood before the creature, his massive, hulking frame silhouetted against the dim orange glow of a nearby furnace. He wore his heavy, dark coat zipped tight, his arms crossed over his chest, his face a mask of solemn, unyielding stoicism. Unlike Watts or Tyrian, Hazel did not bow, nor did he tremble.
He simply stood, waiting for his instructions with the quiet patience of a mountain. The Seer's eye flared crimson, and Salem's face appeared within the misty projection.
"Hazel," she said, her tone carrying a rare note of quiet respect.
"The pieces are moving in Mistral. Have you established contact with our allies?"
"I am waiting for the meeting now," Hazel replied, his deep, gravelly voice echoing in the empty metal room.
"The local White Fang cells are restless. They are tired of the hiding, and they are tired of the delay."
"Then you must ensure they fall into line," Salem instructed.
"Go to the headquarters of the White Fang. Meet with their leader, Sienna Khan. She is a woman of high pride and strict discipline, but she must understand that her revolution is merely a branch of our own design. If she cooperative, she shall have her kingdom. If she resists..."
"I will handle it," Hazel interrupted softly, his eyes downcast.
"I do not wish for unnecessary bloodshed, Salem. I will speak to her. I will make her see reason."
"I trust your discretion, Hazel," Salem said.
"But do not let your aversion to violence blind you to the necessity of our victory. The Relic of Knowledge must be ours before the year ends."
"I understand," Hazel said, his jaw tightening. The Seer's light faded, leaving the refinery in the dim, cold orange glow of the dying furnace. Hazel took a slow, heavy breath, turning his back on the Grimm as he walked toward the heavy iron doors, his boots echoing in the empty, silent dark.
