The emerald-canopied forests surrounding the borders of Vale were thick with a damp, suffocating heat. Below the ancient treeline, two figures moved in a blind, frantic rush, their boots kicking up damp earth and rotting leaves. Mercury Black wiped a layer of ash and sweat from his forehead, his mechanical legs hissing softly as the hydraulic seals struggled against the rough terrain.
Beside him, Emerald Sustrai was trembling, her green hair matted against her face, her eyes wide with a frantic, unblinking terror that Mercury had never seen in her before.
"Slow down, Em," Mercury muttered, though his own breath was ragged.
"We're far enough away from the academy. The Atlas droids are offline."
"You don't understand," Emerald whispered, her teeth clicking together. She stopped, leaning her back against a massive tree trunk, her hands gripping her twin sickles, Thief's Respite, so hard her knuckles turned stark white.
"You didn't see him up close. You didn't try to touch his mind."
"It was just a guy, Em. A weird, bald guy in a ridiculous outfit," Mercury said, though the memory of the sky parting above the CCT tower made his chest tighten.
"So he's strong. We've seen strong people before."
"No, Mercury, you don't get it," she hissed, her voice cracking with a raw, rising panic.
"When Cinder was engulfed in that fire... I tried to use my Semblance on him. I tried to make him see an illusion of the tower collapsing, to give her an opening to escape. I poured every ounce of my Aura into his head." Mercury frowned, his silver eyes narrowing.
"And?"
"And nothing!" Emerald cried out, her eyes filling with helpless tears.
"Usually, when I use my power, I can feel the target's mind. I can feel their thoughts, their fears, their senses. It's like touching a thread. But when I reached out to him... there was nothing to catch. It wasn't a wall. It was just a vast, infinite emptiness. He didn't even blink. He just looked straight through the illusion like it wasn't even there. My Semblance didn't fail. It just didn't matter to him." Before Mercury could answer, a weak, wet groan echoed through the brush a few yards ahead.
The two associates froze, then rushed through the thicket. In a small, smoking crater at the base of a jagged rock formation lay Cinder Fall. The sight was horrific. The pristine, absolute power of the Fall Maiden was entirely gone, replaced by a broken, shuddering body. Her elaborate crimson dress was torn to shreds, her left arm bent at an unnatural angle, and her chest heaving with shallow, agonizing breaths.
Blood trickled from her nose and ears, and the fiery glow that had once resided in her eyes was completely dark.
"Cinder!" Emerald screamed, dropping to her knees beside her master, her hands hovering over the broken woman, terrified to touch her and cause more pain. Cinder's eyes fluttered open, unfocused and bloodshot. Her fingers twitched in the dirt, grasping at nothing.
"The... the fist..." she rasped, her voice completely stripped of its usual melodic malice, reduced to a pathetic, child-like whimper.
"He... he didn't even... try..."
"We have to get her out of here," Mercury said, his face hardening as he looked at the horizon. The sun was fully shining now, a cruel mockery of the dark empire they were supposed to inherit today.
"If that thing decides to take a walk in this direction, we're done. We need to get back to Salem. Now." Together, lifting the broken Maiden between them, they vanished into the deeper shadows of the forest, fleeing from a power that had turned their grand destiny into a joke.
Deep within the industrial warehouses of the Vale shipping docks, the remaining members of the White Fang were in a state of absolute, chaotic retreat. Weapons were being dropped, crates of stolen Atlas Dust were left abandoned on the concrete floor, and the air was thick with the scent of fear. This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
Adam Taurus stood in the center of the primary warehouse, his black trench coat stained with ash, his crimson mask reflecting the dim overhead lights. His hand was gripped tightly around the hilt of Wilt, his breathing measured but incredibly heavy.
"High Leader!" a White Fang lieutenant panted, running into the room with a broken rifle.
"The airship transport teams... they're completely scattered! They say the giant Grimm on the tower was obliterated. The humans... the humans have a new demon among them!"
"Silence!" Adam roared, the sheer force of his voice echoing through the rafters. He drew his blade by an inch, the red steel gleaming with an angry light.
"We do not flee from humans! We are the sword of the Faunus! We are the retribution for generations of suffering!"
"But sir!" the lieutenant stammered, stepping back in fear.
"The dragon... it took one hit! Just one! The human who did it... he wasn't using a weapon!" Adam's grip on his sword tightened until the leather wrap creaked. His mind flashed to Blake, to the way she had looked at him with pity before the chaos erupted. He had promised to destroy everything she loved. He had promised to tear down Beacon brick by brick to show the humans their place. And now, some unremarkable, nameless entity had dropped from the sky and dismantled his entire revolution in a matter of seconds.
"Gather the remaining squads," Adam hissed, his voice dropping into a low, murderous growl.
"We retreat to the swamps of Mistral to regroup. This is not a defeat. It is a tactical delay. If this... this bald parasite thinks he can protect humanity from the storm we are building, he will find out that even steel can be broken." But as he turned to leave, his own lieutenant noticed the subtle tremor in Adam's sword hand. The absolute certainty of the White Fang had been cracked, replaced by the terrifying realization that there was something in the world far more absolute than their hatred.
During the final moment in the Battle of Beacon... Far above the city, floating lazily over the burning suburbs of Vale, a single, damaged Atlas bullhead drifted on autopilot. Inside the quiet cargo bay, Neopolitan sat on an overturned crate of Dust ammunition. Her standard pink-and-white umbrella, Hush, lay across her lap, its hidden blade retracted.
Her multi-colored eyes, usually filled with a playful, sadistic glee, were entirely hollow, staring blankly at a small, bowler hat that rested on the floor between her boots. Roman's hat. She picked it up with trembling hands, her thumb running over the smooth black felt and the crimson band. A few minutes ago, before the sky had split open, she had been on the exterior of the Atlas flagship, dancing through the wind, helping her partner hijack the military network. Then, the Griffons had swarmed.
She remembered the sudden, horrific gust of wind as a massive avian Grimm swooped down, its jaws snapping closed on the roof of the ship. Roman had shoved her off the edge, saving her from the initial strike, but as she floated downward using her umbrella, she had looked back just in time to see the beast swallow him whole. She had lost him. The only person in Remnant who had ever given her a purpose, a home, a name.
Neopolitan closed her eyes, a single tear slipping down her pale cheek, leaving a clean track through the soot on her face. She held the bowler hat tightly against her chest, her small frame shaking with a silent, agonizing sob. She wanted revenge. She wanted to tear down Team RWBY, to burn the Atlas military, to make the entire world feel the emptiness that was currently consuming her heart. Thump. A subtle vibration rattled the floor of the bullhead.
Neo opened her eyes, blinking away her tears as she looked out the shattered side door of the transport. High above the clouds, a massive, ring-shaped shockwave had just obliterated every single Grimm in the sky, turning the flock of Nevermores and Griffons, the very creatures that had taken Roman, into a harmless cascade of black dust. She crawled to the edge of the door, looking down toward the Beacon tower. Through the parted clouds, she saw him.
A man in a yellow suit, completely unbothered, standing under the sunlight. Neo stared down at the figure, her expression shifting from grief to a cold, calculating curiosity. She didn't know who the man was. She didn't know where he had come from. But she knew one thing: the creatures that had killed Roman Torwick had just been thoroughly, utterly erased from existence by a force that didn't even seem to care. She placed the bowler hat carefully onto her head, tilting the brim down over her pink eye.
Her sadness didn't disappear, but a new, quiet determination took its place. If the world was going to be turned upside down by monsters and gods, she would simply have to adapt, watch from the shadows, and find a way to survive in the clearing this stranger had made.
