The morning sun hung bright and heavy over Kuo Kuana, bathing the bustling, tropical island of Menagerie in a sweltering golden heat. The salty ocean breeze rustled through the massive palm leaves shading the Belladonna family home. On the wide wooden steps leading down to the courtyard, Blake Belladonna and Sun Wukong stood side by side. Each held a sleek digital Scroll, scrolling through blank petition forms and neighborhood directories.
"Alright," Sun said, rolling his shoulders and offering a confident, determined grin.
"We've got the whole town mapped out. We just need to hit the main market square, talk to the locals, and get them to sign on. Once they hear the White Fang is planning to attack Haven Academy, they'll definitely want to help defend it." Blake's amber eyes remained guarded, though her exposed feline ears twitched with a mix of anxiety and hope.
"I hope you're right, Sun. Let's go."
For the next few hours, Blake and Sun navigated the dense, vibrant pathways of the island settlement. The marketplace was a labyrinth of colorful tents, shouting vendors, and families going about their daily lives. However, the reality of their recruitment drive quickly proved to be a crushing, uphill battle. They approached a group of merchants near a fruit stand. Blake held out her Scroll, her voice earnest.
"Please. Haven Academy is going to be attacked by Adam Taurus's extremist cell. We need volunteers to travel to Mistral and defend the school." A burly Faunus man with ram horns scoffed, crossing his arms over his chest.
"You want us to sail across the ocean to protect a human Huntsman Academy? Why?"
"Haven Academy isn't just for humans," Sun interjected, leaning forward.
"There are Faunus students there too. If Haven falls, it affects everyone."
"Yeah, well, let them protect themselves," the merchant grumbled, turning his back to arrange his crates.
"The humans put us on this rock. I'm not bleeding for their schools." Further down the street, Blake approached a pair of young Faunus women.
"The White Fang is planning something terrible. We have to stop them before they ruin everything our people have worked for."
"The White Fang is supposed to protect us," one of the women replied, her brow furrowing in deep suspicion.
"Adam Taurus is a leader. Why would I volunteer to fight against our own kind?" At the edge of the residential district, Blake finally approached an older Faunus, a man who had often visited her father for council meetings.
"Mister Corson. Please. If we don't stand up to Adam now, he will drag the entire Faunus race into a war we can't win." The older man looked at her with profound sadness, shaking his head slowly.
"I'm sorry, Miss Belladonna. I have the utmost respect for your father, but... I have a family to look after. I left Anima to get away from the violence. I can't go back to it." By the time the sun reached its zenith, Blake and Sun's petition list remained completely, agonizingly empty.
Later that afternoon, the two teenagers sat at a small, open-air café overlooking the sparkling blue ocean. The ceiling fans above them spun with a lazy, rhythmic hum, offering minimal relief from the tropical heat. Sun slumped back in his chair, taking a long, frustrated drag from his iced tropical drink. He slammed the glass back onto the wooden table with a heavy sigh.
"I just don't get it," Sun complained, his golden monkey tail wrapping tightly around the leg of his chair in pure irritation.
"How can they just sit around and do nothing? The White Fang is literally getting ready to attack a Huntsman Academy, and nobody here even cares!" Blake stared out at the rolling waves, her expression somber and deeply reflective. She rested her hands on the table, her fingers tracing the condensation on her glass.
"Not everyone is like us, Sun," Blake said softly, her voice carrying a heavy, empathetic weight.
"The Faunus in Menagerie... the ones that weren't born on this island... they moved here because they were tired of fighting. They were tired of having to struggle constantly just to exist in a world that hated them. They came here to find peace. You can't blame them for not wanting to march back into a warzone." Sun's frustration melted slightly, his expression softening as he looked at her. He rubbed the back of his neck, hesitating for a moment before deciding to tread onto more dangerous ground.
"Adam..." Sun started gently, his voice dropping into a careful, inquisitive tone.
"Was he... the guy you used to be with? In the past?" Blake completely froze. Her breath hitched in her throat, her amber eyes darkening as the memories she had tried so desperately to bury clawed their way back to the surface. For a long, suffocating moment, the only sound between them was the crashing of the waves against the pier. Slowly, Blake offered a single, heavy nod. Sun winced, looking down at his drink.
"I'm sorry for bringing it up."
"It's alright," Blake murmured, closing her eyes briefly. She opened them again, turning her gaze directly to Sun.
"Sun... have you ever met someone, and thought to yourself, 'They are the personification of this word'?" Sun rubbed his head, genuinely confused by the philosophical shift.
"Uh... I guess? What do you mean?" A faint, bittersweet smile touched Blake's lips as she thought of her team.
"When I first met Ruby, I watched how she acted, how she treated people, and I thought to myself, 'This girl is the embodiment of purity.' And after a while... I saw that Weiss was defiance." Blake's smile grew a fraction wider, picturing the golden-haired brawler who had always watched her back.
"And Yang... Yang was strength." Her smile completely vanished. The warmth in her eyes turned to a cold, haunted ash.
"When I was in the White Fang, I looked up to Adam," Blake continued, her voice trembling slightly.
"At first, I thought Adam was justice. He fought for our people when no one else would. Then, as things got darker, I tried to convince myself he was passion." Blake gripped her glass so tightly her knuckles turned white.
"But over time, I realized I was wrong. He wasn't any of those things. Adam is spite." Blake's voice hardened into absolute certainty.
"Not hatred. Not rage. Spite. He won't accept equality. He only wants suffering for what he feels the world did to him. And his way of thinking... it is dangerously contagious." You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version. Sun remained quiet, absorbing the terrifying reality of the man they were preparing to face.
"That's why I worry about Ilia," Blake whispered, her feline ears drooping sadly against her hair.
"She's not like Adam. Not yet, at least. But I don't know how long that will last." Blake looked back out at the horizon.
"Ilia's chameleon traits meant she could easily pass as a human. She could have lived a completely normal, safe life in Atlas if she wanted to. But she didn't. I always admired her for that. She lost her family in a mining accident when she was young. That's when she joined the White Fang." Blake took a shaky breath.
"Like me, she was more or less trained on the road alongside other Faunus. We learned to survive. We learned to defend ourselves. But as people like Sienna Khan and Adam started to gain a larger following... she became more dangerous." A deep, localized shame crossed Blake's features.
"I think... I did, too. My parents tried to get me to leave with them when they stepped down. But I refused. I told them they were cowards. I had Adam and Ilia, after all." Blake buried her face in her hands, her voice cracking.
"That was why I felt so much shame facing my parents again. I was so terrified that they would hate me for what I had become. But... I'm so glad I made up with them. Especially my father." She lowered her hands, her amber eyes burning with a fierce, unyielding resolve.
"Ilia is drowning in the same dark tide that almost pulled me under," Blake declared firmly.
"I want to help her. The way you helped me, Sun. I won't give up on her." Sun offered a wide, encouraging grin, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the table.
"Then we'll save her. And we'll save Haven. We just have to figure out how to get this island to listen to us."
In the cool, shadowed, dust-choked courtyard of the Mistral safehouse. The afternoon sun was sinking lower, casting long, sharp shadows across the flagstones, but the intense, rhythmic sounds of combat echoed loudly within the enclosed walls.
"Again!" Pyrrha Nikos commanded, her voice ringing clearly through the courtyard. She stood in her dark combat trousers and red training shirt, perfectly balanced, her hands raised in a loose guard. Jaune Arc roared, lunging forward with terrifying, explosive speed. The physical conditioning he had endured through Saitama's grueling, unyielding regimen had packed an unimaginable density into his muscles.
Without his armor or his sword, he looked lighter, but every movement carried the concussive weight of a freight train. He threw a massive, heavy right hook, his knuckles humming with the faint white glow of his amplified Aura. Pyrrha didn't try to block it. She stepped flawlessly inside his guard, her hand sweeping up to intercept his forearm. She used his own immense, surging momentum, twisting her hips and redirecting the kinetic force in a tight circle. He is incredibly fast.
Pyrrha thought, her emerald eyes narrowing in sharp concentration as she guided his arm. His raw physical output is staggering. But he commits entirely to his forward momentum. With a precise, calculated sweep of her leg, Pyrrha clipped Jaune's ankle. Jaune's center of gravity vanished. He crashed hard into the dirt with a heavy, breathless thud.
"You are telegraphing your strikes before you plant your back foot, Jaune!" Pyrrha instructed, though a bright, incredibly proud smile stretched across her face as she offered him a hand.
"But your footwork is catching up to your strength! You recover twice as fast as you did yesterday!"
"Thanks," Jaune panted, taking her hand and rolling back up to his feet, dirt smudged across his cheek. He let out a breathless laugh, his blue eyes shining with genuine enthusiasm.
"I feel it. The raw power is there, I just have to stop fighting like I'm swinging a giant sword." A few yards away, another sparring match was proving to be a highly unconventional challenge. Ruby Rose dashed forward, throwing a rapid flurry of jabs and crosses. Without the massive, comforting counter-weight of Crescent Rose to anchor her movements, her balance was wildly erratic. Oscar Pine stood opposite her. The farm boy didn't look aggressive. He looked entirely calm.
As Ruby threw a wide, looping punch, Oscar effortlessly ducked underneath it. His movements were incredibly fluid, guided by the ancient, deeply ingrained muscle memory of Professor Ozpin. Oscar stepped to the side, lightly tapping the back of Ruby's knee with his heel, causing her to lose her footing and tumble backward onto the grass with a surprised yelp.
"Oh! I'm so sorry, Ruby!" Oscar gasped, the ancient grace immediately evaporating as he reverted back to a panicked, highly apologetic fourteen-year-old. He frantically reached down to help her up. Ruby burst into a fit of giggles, grabbing his hand and pulling herself up.
"Don't apologize! You're getting way too good at this, Oscar! Though I can't tell if that was your footwork, or if Ozpin was steering the ship!"
"A bit of both, I think," Oscar smiled sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. The heavy wooden gate of the safehouse courtyard suddenly creaked open, breaking the focus of the training session. Qrow Branwen stepped into the yard. His tattered gray cape swept behind him, and the usual cynical smirk on his face was entirely absent. He looked grim, his crimson eyes sharp and focused as he surveyed the sweating, exhausted students.
"Alright, kids. Break time's over," Qrow announced, his voice low and gritty.
"Grab some water and gather inside. It's time to brief the next move."
Ten minutes later, the atmosphere inside the dim, oil-lit parlor of the safehouse was suffocatingly tense. Team RWBY (minus Blake) and Team JNPR sat around the large, cluttered wooden table, their expressions serious as they looked toward the head of the room. Oscar Pine stood near the unlit fireplace. His posture suddenly stiffened, his spine aligning with regal, flawless perfection. The nervous farm boy vanished, replaced instantly by the ancient, commanding presence of Professor Ozpin.
"My students," Ozpin began, his hazel eyes locking onto the teenagers with an immense, solemn gravity. Qrow stepped up to the table, pulling a rolled-up, official piece of parchment from his coat pocket. He slapped it down onto the wooden surface with a sharp thwack.
"Leo sent the formal invitation yesterday," Qrow said, crossing his arms.
"About two weeks, at night. After hours. The Grand Hall of Haven Academy." Qrow tapped the paper with a calloused finger.
"But there's a catch. The invitation is addressed only to me. And he explicitly requested that I arrive entirely unarmed." A harsh, disbelieving scoff broke the silence.
"Unarmed?" Yang Xiao Long leaned back in her chair, her violet eyes flashing with sheer, unadulterated skepticism. She crossed both of her perfectly intact, muscular arms over her leather jacket.
"That's not an invitation, Uncle. That's a firing squad."
"It is a blatantly obvious trap," Weiss Schnee agreed, her blue eyes narrowing coldly as she looked at the parchment.
"If Headmaster Lionheart is compromised by Salem's faction, asking a solitary Huntsman to walk into an empty academy without a weapon is an absolute death sentence."
"Exactly," Qrow smirked, a dark, dangerous glint returning to his eyes.
"Which is why we're going to spring it on them before they can close the jaws." Ozpin nodded, stepping closer to the table, leaning both hands elegantly upon the brass gears of The Long Memory.
"Leonardo believes he is isolating Qrow. What he does not know is that my soul has survived the Battle of Beacon. He has no knowledge of this boy, nor does he realize the strength of the forces gathered in this very room." Ozpin's gaze swept over the battle-hardened students.
"Our tactical approach relies on a total reversal of their expectations. Qrow and I will enter through the front gates precisely as Leonardo expects. To them, it will appear as though Qrow has foolishly brought a helpless, unarmed civilian child into the snare. We will play the perfect bait." Jaune leaned forward, his hands clasped tightly together on the table, his tactical mind catching up to the ancient Headmaster's rhythm.
"And while they're focused on you..."
"You will already be inside," Ozpin confirmed.
"The rest of you will infiltrate Haven Academy hours beforehand. You will secure the perimeter, locate the entrance to the Vault, and remain completely hidden within the shadows of the Grand Hall."
"So we hit them from the blind spots the moment they reveal themselves," Ren deduced calmly, his dark eyes fixed on the map of Haven spread across the table.
"Precisely," Ozpin stated.
"We will detail the exact tactical positioning and entry vectors upon our infiltration tomorrow, once we assess the structural integrity of the academy's defenses." The ancient Headmaster gripped his cane tightly. His expression turned exceptionally grave, the weight of his endless war casting long shadows across Oscar's young face.
"But heed my warning," Ozpin whispered, his voice dropping into a chilling, absolute calm that made the hair on the back of Ruby's neck stand up.
"Two weeks from now, we step into the true crucible. Keep up the training, but stay vigilant." He looked deeply at each of them.
"We do not know exactly who will be waiting for us in that hall," Ozpin warned, his tone heavy with dread.
"We know Salem has sent her inner circle to Mistral, but we cannot predict which of her pieces are currently on the board. It is entirely possible that Cinder Fall herself will be waiting in the dark." Ozpin closed his eyes for a brief, heavy second before opening them again, his gaze piercing through the dim light.
"No matter what happens, you must be ready for anything. We are walking blind into a den of wolves, and they will not hesitate to strike you down. Keep your weapons close, keep your Aura ready, and above all else... stay together."
