The early morning air over Beacon Academy carried a crisp, biting chill that rolled off the cliffs of the Emerald Forest. A dense shroud of low-hanging fog clung to the manicured lawns and stone walkways, refracting the first pale, golden rays of the rising sun The towering arches of the main campus loomed like silent sentinels in the dawn light, the quiet shattered only by the rhythmic, steady tap-tap-tap of rubber soles against concrete.
Jaune Arc exhaled a long, measured plume of white vapor into the freezing air. Dressed in a simple, slightly faded blue cotton tracksuit with the legs pushed up to his calves, he kept his elbows tucked close to his ribs, his eyes locked on the stone path ahead. Sweat slicked his blonde hair, plastering stray bangs against his forehead, but his breathing remained remarkably controlled. This wasn't the frantic, hyperventilating sprint of a boy trying to escape his own shadow.
This was the disciplined cadence of a hunter finding his stride. He was on the final leg of his mandatory ten-kilometer run. His legs burning with a familiar, localized ache that no longer felt like torture, but like a solid, grounding anchor. A soft, rapid fluttering of footsteps echoed from a connecting pathway near the training hall. Jaune didn't even have to look to know the signature rhythm.
Emerging from the veil of early morning mist, Pyrrha Nikos glided seamlessly onto the main path, aligning herself perfectly with his right shoulder. She was clad in a vibrant red tracksuit that mirrored the crimson of her hair, which was pulled back into a high, swinging ponytail that caught the morning light. Despite the brisk pace, her face bore no signs of exertion. Only a radiant, brilliant smile that entirely dissolved the lingering chill of the morning.
"Good morning, Jaune!" Pyrrha greeted him, her voice light and melodic, easily cutting through the steady thud of their synchronized footsteps. She adjusted her stride, her movements possessed by the effortless grace of a lifetime athlete.
"I hope you don't mind the company. I've been quite curious about this daily ritual of yours, and I decided it was time I finally gave it a try myself." Jaune glanced sideways, a bright, boyish grin breaking through his exhaustion. He let out a breathless chuckle, his shoulders bouncing slightly as he maintained the pace.
"Mind? Never. But honestly, Pyrrha, you're 'The Invincible Girl.' A ten-kilometer run is practically a warm-up stroll for you. You're probably going to end up lapping me before we even hit the amphitheater." Pyrrha let out a soft, melodic chuckle, her eyes crinkling at the corners with genuine amusement.
"Says the one who is able to defeat Grimm with his bare hands." She shifted her gaze down to the ground passing beneath them, her combat-trained senses taking mental notes of the sheer velocity they were maintaining. She looked back up, her green eyes shining with a mixture of pride and profound awe.
"You are running much faster than I remember, Jaune. The ground isn't even shaking beneath you anymore. You're just... gliding." Hearing her praise, Jaune's expression softened, the playful banter giving way to a deeper, more introspective quiet. He looked straight ahead, watching the morning light glint off the polished windows of the dormitories. The memory of his explosive meltdown in the courtyard, the bitter, toxic venom he had spat at the person who cared for him most, still left a phantom ache in his chest.
"Hey, Pyrrha?" Jaune started, his voice dropping into a sincere, emotional cadence that ran beneath the rhythm of their breathing.
"I... I've been thinking a lot about what happened. About the things I said. I really regretted calling Aura a 'cheat code'. I was just so scared, so desperate to stand on my own two feet that I couldn't see the bigger picture." Pyrrha's smile faltered slightly, replaced by a look of intense, quiet attention. She didn't interrupt, allowing him the space to speak his truth.
"After everything that happened in the forest... after feeling the way my body has changed from Saitama's crazy regime, and seeing how that physical strength naturally imbues itself with my own massive Aura reserves..." Jaune took a deep, centering breath, his fists clenching slightly at his sides.
"I finally get it. Aura isn't a shortcut. It's a blessing. A blessing that has to be used wisely. I'm not going to throw it away out of some stubborn pride anymore. I'm going to embrace it, refine it, and use it to build the absolute best version of myself. For the team. For us." If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation. A profound, radiant warmth bloomed across Pyrrha's features.
Her gaze softened with an intense tenderness, her chest swelling with an emotion so fierce it nearly stolen her breath. She reached out slightly, her hand hovering near his arm for a brief second before she pulled it back into her jogging form.
"I am so incredibly glad to hear you say that, Jaune," Pyrrha said, her voice rich with emotional weight. Then, her eyes narrowed with a playful, teasing glint, her tone shifting into that of a strict, loving partner.
"But do not think this means you can neglect your sword and shield just because you've managed to acquire a very tiny portion of Saitama's strength. A true knight relies on his discipline, not just his knuckles." Jaune raised his hands comically in a gesture of mock surrender, nearly losing his footing for a split second before recovering his stride.
"Whoa, message received! Don't worry, Crocea Mors is still my main style. The sword and shield are always going to be upfront. The physical power? That's strictly the last resort. The ace up the sleeve."
"Good," Pyrrha said, her tone suddenly shifting, dropping into a softer, fiercely protective register that made the hairs on the back of Jaune's neck stand up.
"Because you need to remember something, Jaune Arc," she looked at him sideways, her green eyes locking onto his profile with absolute, unwavering intensity.
"I will always be watching your training. Always. And if something truly terrible happens, if you push yourself to the point of breaking again and make it completely impossible to continue, I will be right there to take care of you." She paused, her stride tightening as she leaned in just a fraction closer, a sudden, dangerous sweetness dripping from her smile.
"And I won't hesitate to use force to keep you in bed if you start being stubborn about it." Jaune swallowed hard, his face twisting into a caricature of pure, comical terror. A heavy sweatdrop practically manifested on the side of his temple as his mind flashed to the image of an iron-willed Pyrrha Nikos using her polarity Semblance to physically pin him to an infirmary mattress.
"Y-Yes, ma'am. Crystals clear. Loud and clear. Note to self: do not anger the overprotective champion..." Pyrrha's fierce expression instantly shattered. A brilliant, violent crimson blush erupted across her cheeks, extending all the way to the tips of her ears. She looked away hastily, her hands flying up slightly in a flustered motion as she tried to maintain her jogging pace.
"I-I am not being overprotective!" she stammered, her voice rising an octave as she bit her lower lip, her gaze darting to the side of the path. Then, in a small, incredibly vulnerable whisper that carried the full weight of her hidden desires, she mumbled, "Besides... if you go and get yourself seriously hurt again... who is supposed to take me out for that dinner date?" The words hit Jaune like a physical shockwave. His brain completely short-circuited.
His entire face flushed a brilliant, matching shade of bright red, his eyes widening to the size of saucers as his arms flailed slightly in mid-air.
"D-Dinner?! Right! The date! The official... the official date! I mean, I definitely won't get hurt! I'll be perfectly fine! Intact! Totally unbroken!" The two of them jogged side by side in an agonizingly sweet, blushing silence, the air between them practically vibrating with teenage awkwardness and mutual infatuation. Swoosh. The sudden, violent rush of displaced air didn't come from behind them, nor did it come from the side.
Directly to Jaune's left, completely occupying the empty space on the concrete path, a bright, neon-green blur materialized out of thin air. It was Saitama. He was dressed in his signature, slightly oversized green janitorial jumpsuit, the legs tucked into his bright red boots. But he wasn't running.
He was moving completely backward, his upper torso bent forward at a perfectly casual, ninety-degree angle as he furiously swept a standard straw broom across the concrete, his other hand expertly maneuvering a plastic dustpan along the edge of the path. His movements were a terrifying, hyper-speed blur Swish-swish-swish-swish His bald head catching the morning sun like a polished mirror as he cleared away microscopic flecks of dust at a velocity that defied the laws of friction.
His face was a perfect, deadpan circle of utter indifference. His small, dotted eyes were locked entirely on a stray piece of gravel near the grass line.
"Excuse me," Saitama said flatly, his voice perfectly level and completely devoid of any physical exertion as he effortlessly glided backward right beside them, sweeping a clean path through the fog before surging ahead of their maximum sprint speed without missing a single stroke.
"What the...!" Jaune's jaw dropped so violently it looked as though it might detach from his skull, his eyes bulging comically out of his head as his feet tangled together, causing him to stumble wildly before Pyrrha instinctively caught his elbow. Pyrrha herself completely stopped in her tracks, her mouth slightly agape, her perfect athletic composure utterly shattered as she stared at the green janitorial blur disappearing down the path toward the courtyard.
