King remained on one knee. His spear lay beside him. RoboX stood over him, ready to finish the fight. Then something changed. A small notification flickered across his vision. His glowing eyes dimmed for a moment, then sharpened again. For the first time, something resembling surprise crossed his expressionless face.
"Magic quota reached." King slowly lifted his head.
"What?" RoboX went completely still.
"The required magical energy has been accumulated." King narrowed his eyes.
"What are you talking about?" RoboX lowered his arm. King gave a tired, humorless smirk.
"What, giving up already?" RoboX turned toward him.
"The opposite." His eyes glowed brighter.
"Our objective is now ready to proceed." Far above the ruined city, high on a shattered rooftop, RoboZ stood beside Amelia and Krystal, watching the horizon. Then his body locked in place. Amelia tilted her head.
"What was that ping?" RoboZ looked down at his own hand. A quiet stillness settled over him.
"It seems it's time." Krystal frowned.
"Time for what?" RoboZ raised his eyes toward the sky.
"The magic required to become whole has been reached." Amelia's eyes widened.
"Become whole?"
"The three of us have accumulated enough magical energy," he said.
"We'll reach our peak potential. The fusion protocol will now activate." Amelia stepped closer.
"So you're going to become one with RoboX and RoboY?"
"Yes." She hesitated.
"RoboZ. Just don't go." He looked at her for a long moment.
"I have to."
"Why?"
"My system was built for this." He placed a hand against his chest.
"The three of us were constructed with a device meant to trigger this exact fusion the moment the required quota was met." Krystal's expression hardened.
"So your creator planned this from the beginning."
"It appears so." RoboZ looked down at his own hands.
"As though he already knew this moment would come." Amelia's eyes softened.
"And there's nothing you can do?" RoboZ didn't answer right away. Then, quietly, "No. My system is already overriding my voluntary functions." His eyes flickered, and then began to glow a hollow yellow.
"RoboZ?" Nothing.
"RoboZ!" His body jerked upward, yanked into the air by something far stronger than his own will. Amelia's wings snapped open.
"RoboZ!" He shot away over the skyline, faster than either of them could match on instinct alone.
"Where is he going?" Krystal shouted, already chasing after him.
"I don't know," Amelia called back, "but we're not losing him." They chased him across the ruined rooftops, weaving between collapsed towers and half standing spires, RoboZ cutting a straight, merciless line through the sky ahead of them. Every time they closed the gap, some unseen force in his frame accelerated him further, as though the fusion itself refused to let anything slow it down.
"He's not even trying to escape us," Amelia said between breaths.
"He's being pulled." Krystal's jaw tightened.
"Then whatever's waiting for him, we're not letting him get there alone." They pushed harder, RoboZ's yellow eyes fixed on some invisible point far in the distance, empty of everything that had made him RoboZ only minutes earlier. Meanwhile, across the ruined city, Ace and Max were still locked in their fight with RoboY. RoboY suddenly went rigid mid swing. His head tilted. A notification blinked across his vision. He stared at it for a moment, and something in his expression shifted.
"Oh." Ace raised his swords.
"What?" RoboY's grin returned, sharper this time.
"Looks like I've overstayed my welcome here." Ace frowned.
"What are you talking about?" RoboY turned his back on them.
"It's been fun." He crouched low.
"But I've got somewhere to be." Ace's eyes widened.
"Oh no you don't." RoboY launched himself skyward without warning, and Ace was already moving, thrusting his hand out.
"Magic Skill: Fireball!" A massive blue fireball tore through the air after him. RoboY twisted sideways at the last possible second, letting it detonate just past his shoulder, close enough to singe the edge of his frame. He didn't even slow down. Ace sheathed one blade.
"Seriously."
"After him," Max said, already sprinting. Ace fell in beside him.
"I'm not letting that thing get away that easily." RoboY glanced back over his shoulder, grin widening.
"You'll have to do better than that." He accelerated, weaving between collapsed buildings with contemptuous ease, forcing Ace and Max into a running, leaping pursuit across crumbling rooftops and shattered streets. Ace vaulted a gap between two buildings, blades flashing as he cut through debris in his path. Max kept pace beside him, eyes locked on RoboY's back, refusing to let the distance grow.
"He's not fighting anymore," Max said.
"He's just running."
"Then we corner him," Ace shot back. But no matter how hard they pushed, RoboY stayed exactly out of reach, drawing them both further and further toward the center of the ruined city, toward the same converging point that RoboZ and RoboX were already racing toward. Three signals. One destination. The three of them finally came together in the ruined plaza where King and Tony stood. RoboX arrived first, standing motionless at the center. RoboY dropped in beside him a moment later, landing lightly, still grinning.
Then RoboZ descended from above, his yellow eyes empty, his body settling into stillness beside the other two. King's eyes widened.
"They're all here?" Tony stared between them, ears dropping.
"No. They lost?"
"That doesn't make sense," King said. Tony shook his head.
"It's impossible." RoboY looked toward them, still grinning.
"Looks like everybody made it." RoboZ said nothing. His eyes remained fixed forward, unseeing. RoboX stepped ahead of the other two.
"The conditions have been satisfied." King's expression darkened.
"Then that means..." RoboX raised both arms. If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
"Behold." His voice carried across the ruined city.
"The peak of engineered evolution." The three of them began to glow, faintly at first, then with rapidly building intensity. The air around the plaza grew thick and heavy, pressing down like the moment before a storm breaks. Cracks of light split across their armor, threading between the seams of their bodies as though something inside them was trying to escape. Max staggered as the pressure hit him.
"What's going on?"
"Cover your eyes," King shouted. Everyone shielded their faces as the light surged brighter, and brighter still, until it was no longer light but something closer to a small sun burning in the center of the plaza. The three silhouettes at its heart began to blur into one another, their outlines stretching and merging, armor plating folding and reshaping, individual frames collapsing into a single, larger shape that grew with every passing second. Amelia strained her eyes against the glare.
"RoboZ!" The light swelled violently.
"No!" She reached toward him, but there was nothing left to reach for, only white. Then, all at once, silence. The light collapsed inward and vanished. Slowly, everyone lowered their arms. RoboX, RoboY, and RoboZ were gone. In their place stood a single figure at the center of the ruined battlefield, and the ground beneath him had cracked outward in a perfect ring, as though his very existence had been too much for the earth to hold. Nobody spoke.
The figure raised one hand and studied it, turning it slowly in front of his own eyes. His frame was tall and heavily built, plated in dark, seamless armor that moved like it had been grown rather than assembled. Long, wavy scarlet brown hair spilled upwards, glowing faintly with the same energy that had consumed the plaza moments before. He flexed his fingers.
"So," he said, voice calm and layered, as though three voices were speaking in perfect unison beneath one.
"This is what it feels like." He looked out over the battlefield, over the crater, over the broken group scattered around its edge.
"My name is RoboGeneX." He let the name settle in the silence.
"I am the union of RoboX's calculation, RoboY's instinct, and RoboZ's restraint. Three functions, finally operating as one." King's eyes widened. Tony's jaw dropped. Max stood frozen where he was. Krystal instinctively stepped closer to Amelia. Amelia stared at him, breath caught in her throat.
"That isn't RoboZ." RoboGeneX's gaze swept slowly across the group, unhurried, cataloguing each of them in turn. Then it stopped. On Ace. He raised a hand and pointed, calm and precise.
"You." Ace's eyes narrowed.
"Ace, was it?" Ace tightened his grip on both swords, saying nothing. RoboGeneX lowered his hand and opened his arms slightly, an almost courteous gesture.
"Hit me. As hard as you're able." The plaza went still.
"What?" Ace said.
"You heard me correctly." RoboGeneX didn't smile. There was no mockery in his voice, no theatrics, only the quiet, unbothered certainty of something that had already calculated the outcome and found it unworthy of concern.
"I want to know what the strongest fighter among you is capable of. Consider it professional curiosity." Amelia stepped forward immediately.
"Ace, don't. It could be a trap." Ace didn't look away from RoboGeneX.
"If it's a trap, so be it." He raised one blade slowly, blue flame beginning to crawl along its edge.
"But if he's really giving me a free hit," Ace said quietly, "then letting me take it is the worst decision he's made all day." Amelia's eyes widened.
"Ace." Ace stepped forward, flames climbing higher along both swords now, his expression hardening into something colder and more focused than either of them had seen from him before. RoboGeneX remained perfectly still, watching him approach without a trace of concern. Ace stopped a few paces away and leveled a blade at him.
"You called yourself the peak of evolution." The flames along his swords roared brighter.
"That title's mine. Not yours." He vanished.
"Magic skill: Inferno Roads!" Blue fire tore from both blades as Ace closed the distance in an instant, the ground beneath his feet splitting apart from the sheer force of his acceleration, rubble hurled outward in every direction. He swung both swords with everything he had left in him, pouring every ounce of strength and flame into a single, decisive strike. The impact was catastrophic.
The ground beneath them buckled and collapsed into a wide crater, the shockwave rolling outward and throwing everyone still standing off their feet. King caught Tony out of the air before he could be flung into a wall.
"Hold on!" Max braced against the tremor. Krystal spread her wings to steady herself. Amelia shielded her face against the wave of dust and debris. Then everything went quiet. Ace's blades were still pressed against RoboGeneX's chest. Nobody moved. The dust slowly began to clear. King stared into the haze.
"No way." Max's eyes widened.
"He took that head on." Tony swallowed hard.
"There's no way anyone walks out of that."
"He can't be unharmed," Krystal murmured. Amelia held her breath. The dust finished clearing. RoboGeneX was still standing exactly where he had been. Not a scratch marked his armor. Not a single dent. Ace stared at his own blades, then at RoboGeneX's chest where they still rested, completely untouched.
"What." He looked up.
"How?" RoboGeneX glanced down at the swords pressed against him, then back up at Ace, with something almost like mild curiosity.
"Was that everything?" Ace's expression shifted.
"Disappointing," RoboGeneX said, and there was no cruelty in the word, only a flat, honest assessment. He raised one hand. Ace barely registered the movement before it happened. RoboGeneX's fist struck him with a force that defied comprehension, driving him straight down into the earth. The ground didn't simply crack, it collapsed entirely, an eruption of stone and dust and shattered rubble tearing outward through the surrounding streets.
Buildings that had survived every other blow of the day folded and came apart. Roads split for blocks in every direction. The ruined city absorbed the impact and buckled under it. Everyone still standing was thrown backward by the force of the shockwave. King fought to stay upright.
"What power was that?" Max stared at the devastation, pale.
"He erased the whole battlefield with one punch." Tony's eyes shook.
"Ace!" Krystal covered her mouth.
"That was a single hit." Amelia stood frozen, eyes locked on the massive crater where Ace had disappeared.
"Ace." Her voice wavered.
"No." She spread her wings and shot forward.
"Ace!" RoboGeneX turned his head toward her without urgency.
"Another one." Amelia's wings blazed brighter as she surged toward the crater, ignoring everything else, but before she could reach the edge of it, RoboGeneX vanished from where he stood. Her eyes widened.
"What?" He was already in front of her. She had no time to react before his hand closed around her arm.
"Let go!" He swung her downward, and the ground where she landed cratered beneath the force, a second scar carved into the ruined plaza.
"Amelia!" Krystal screamed. King's face fell. Tony stared in horror. Max's fists clenched so tightly his knuckles went white. RoboGeneX stood over the new crater, entirely at ease.
"This power," he said, examining his own hand, "far exceeds even my own projections." His golden hair drifted faintly in the settling dust.
"Perhaps this truly is what peak function feels like." Max was the first to move.
"Everyone, fall back." He launched himself at RoboGeneX regardless of his own words. Krystal followed instantly.
"I'm with you." King forced himself upright, gripping his spear.
"Then we finish this together."
"Magic skill: Triangular Zone," King called out. Krystal and Max fell into position around him without hesitation, forming three points of a perfect triangle with RoboGeneX caught at its center. Green light bloomed from King's spear, silver energy rippled from Krystal's blades, and a deep violet aura surged around Max's fists, the three colors weaving together in the air until they locked into a single shimmering barrier, sealing RoboGeneX inside a rotating field of raw magic.
RoboGeneX tested the boundary with a glance.
"An enclosure technique."
"Not just an enclosure," King said. The three of them moved, and their speed doubled instantly, the zone's power surging through their bodies, sharpening every motion, every step. Max struck first, appearing at RoboGeneX's flank in a blur. Krystal followed from above, a heartbeat behind him. King came last from the opposite angle, spear already thrust forward.
A glowing sphere of combined energy formed between them, and they began passing it, King to Krystal, Krystal to Max, Max back to King, faster with every rotation, the sphere growing denser and brighter as it cycled through the triangle they'd formed around their opponent. The air itself began to hum under the pressure of it. RoboGeneX watched the sphere circle him without moving from where he stood.
"Interesting technique," he said.
"Cooperative amplification. Clever design." The sphere reached its peak, blinding and pulsing, and King caught it on the final pass.
"Now!" He drove it forward with everything the technique had built, the combined force of three fighters and a technique refined over years, aimed directly at the center of the zone. The impact was immense, tearing through the enclosed space in a single devastating column of light, consuming RoboGeneX entirely within it. For a moment, nobody breathed. Then the light faded, and the zone dissolved with it.
RoboGeneX stood exactly where he had before, one hand still raised where he'd caught the attack against his open palm. His golden hair swayed gently, undisturbed. Not a single line of damage marked him. King's grip on his spear went slack.
"That was our strongest combination." RoboGeneX studied his own palm for a moment, almost thoughtfully.
"It was well constructed," he said.
"The doubled speed, the shared output, the timing of the release. All of it was correct." He lowered his hand.
"It simply wasn't enough." Max dropped to one knee, breathing hard. Krystal staggered, barely catching herself. King remained standing only through sheer will, his spear trembling in his grip. RoboGeneX regarded the three of them without malice, the way someone might regard a finished calculation.
"Combat capability negligible." He raised his hand, and it began to glow. Amelia forced herself upright, blood on her lip, and staggered forward anyway.
"Stop!" RoboGeneX's eyes shifted toward her. Amelia froze mid step, caught in the weight of his attention. King's eyes widened.
"Amelia, get back!" RoboGeneX's hand finished gathering its charge. Then, nothing. He simply stopped. Silence settled over the ruined plaza. His glowing eyes flickered, and for the briefest instant, something passed behind them, something that didn't belong to RoboX's calculation or RoboY's instinct. He looked down at his own raised hand as though seeing it for the first time.
"Actually," he said slowly, "I've decided to let you live." Nobody moved. King forced his head up.
"You what?" RoboGeneX examined his fingers again, turning them slowly.
"This power," he said, "is magnificent." His hand closed into a loose fist.
"But I want to know something first." He looked over the battered group scattered across the ruined plaza.
"Can you become something capable of matching it?" Nobody answered. RoboGeneX allowed himself something close to a smile.
"I doubt it," he said.
"But you may try." Amelia pushed herself upright, watching him carefully.
"Why give us a chance at all?" RoboGeneX glanced back at her over his shoulder.
"One week." King's eyes widened.
"You have one week to prepare this quadrant for what comes next." He turned fully away from them.
"Use it wisely." His hair swayed as he rose into the air and disappeared over the ruined skyline without another word. Silence returned to the city. For a long moment, nobody moved. Then Amelia pulled herself out of the crater she'd been thrown into, looking around at the devastation surrounding them.
"What was that power?" Her eyes swept the wreckage until they found him. Ace. Lying motionless in the massive crater RoboGeneX's punch had carved into the earth. Her face fell instantly.
"Ace." She ran to him, dropping to her knees at his side.
"Ace?" Nothing. She grabbed his shoulders.
"Ace!" She shook him. Still nothing. Tears welled in her eyes.
"Please," she said, voice cracking.
"Please wake up." King approached slowly and knelt beside them, checking Ace's pulse. A moment passed. Then he exhaled, visibly relieved.
"He's alive." Amelia's eyes widened.
"He's alive?"
"Barely," King said, "but yes." He stood and raised his hand over Ace.
"Magic Skill: Forever Flowers Bloom." A soft green light spread across Ace's body, closing his wounds one by one. His fingers twitched. His eyes slowly opened.
"Huh?" Amelia's face lit up instantly.
"Ace!" She threw her arms around him.
"You're awake!" Ace blinked, dazed.
"Why are you yelling?" Before she could answer, Tony came sprinting across the rubble and launched himself directly into Ace's arms.
"I thought you died!" Ace stared down at him.
"Why are you hugging me?" Tony only squeezed tighter.
"I thought you were dead!" Ace sighed.
"Can you let go, please?" Tony did not let go. Ace tried prying him off with both hands. Tony held firm.
"What is your grip strength?" Ace muttered.
"I'm never letting go," Tony said. Ace eventually gave up entirely.
"Fine." King walked over and crouched beside him.
"I'll fill you in." He explained everything, the fusion, RoboGeneX, the mercy, the week they'd been given. Ace's expression darkened as he listened.
"He spared us." He looked toward the direction RoboGeneX had vanished.
"Why would something like that show mercy?" Amelia went quiet for a moment.
"I think I might know." Everyone turned toward her.
"Krystal and I ran into RoboZ before the fusion happened," she said.
"He was different from the other two. He didn't want to fight us. He didn't enjoy hurting anyone. And he was starting to question everything his creator had taught him." King's eyes narrowed.
"You think RoboZ's personality survived the fusion."
"I think it's possible," Amelia said.
"RoboZ is part of RoboGeneX now. Maybe that part of him is still in there somewhere." Max slowly climbed to his feet.
"You're saying he might be influencing RoboGeneX's choices."
"Maybe," Amelia said.
"When RoboZ was alone, he listened. He wanted to understand people, not destroy them. And when RoboGeneX chose to let us live instead of finishing us off..." She looked toward the horizon where he'd disappeared.
"I don't think that decision was entirely his own." Krystal's eyes widened.
"RoboZ..!." Tony finally released his grip on Ace.
"So there's still someone good buried in that thing?"
"I think there might be," Amelia said. Ace stayed silent, staring down at his swords, then out at the devastation that stretched across the ruined city. His expression hardened.
"Then we have a week?" King nodded.
"One week to get stronger." Max clenched his fists.
"One week to figure out how to beat something that just took all four of us apart without trying." Krystal looked toward Amelia.
"And one week to find out if RoboZ is really still in there."
"We can't give up on him," Amelia said quietly. Ace pushed himself to his feet, every muscle in his body protesting the movement. He tightened his grip around his sword anyway.
"Next time," he said, "he doesn't get to knock me down with one punch." Tony looked up at him.
"You sure you're ready for that?" Ace glanced down at him.
"No." A faint, determined smile crossed his face.
"But we've got a week." The group stood together among the ruins of the battlefield, bruised, exhausted, and outmatched in every way that mattered. One week to become stronger. One week to prepare. One week to find a way to defeat the strongest enemy any of them had ever faced.
