Chương 4: The Laundromat Fort
The Tutorial Runs on Trash [A Salvage LitRPG] · whatdafunk · 180 chương · ~33 phút đọc · Tạo 04/07/2026
The laundromat on Tenth had been called Spin City since before Mateo was born, which meant someone had once paid money for a sign shaped like a washing machine wearing sunglasses. The sunglasses were gone now. So was most of the sign. One half hung over the sidewalk, creaking in the wind under the blue dome. The other half lay in the street with bite marks in the plastic letters. A line of detergent had spilled from the front door and dried into a bright green trail that led toward a storm drain.
Above the shop, the second-floor apartments were barricaded from the inside with mattresses, bed frames, a vending machine, and what looked like every folding chair in the neighborhood. Marcus stopped in the intersection.
"Nina!" he shouted. Rosa grabbed the back of his shirt before he could run straight across the open street.
"Do not sprint into the murder laundry," she said. Marcus twisted against her grip.
"She is up there."
"Then we go in a way that lets her keep having a husband." Mateo crouched behind a parked delivery van and scanned the storefront. The van had old bakery logos on the side and three claw marks across the hood. Niko held the Jaw Shield at the corner, its compactor teeth catching the blue light. Mrs. Vance stood behind him with copper wire wrapped around one forearm like an elderly electrician's idea of jewelry.
Darren Pike leaned against a mailbox, pale and sweaty from his new professional development in the field of not exploding. Valerie Chen had sent two of her food court scouts with them after the water tower charter. One was a teenage girl named Priya who carried a tray shield and a bread knife. The other was a short man named Omar with the mop-blade polearm and the expression of someone who had once had strong opinions about clean floors.
"Movement inside," Priya whispered. Mateo saw it too. Something dragged itself past the laundromat window. Not a Shard-Bag. Not a Can Hound. This was wider and lower, with a round metal body and rubber hoses for legs. Its glass door spun slowly, sloshing gray water and loose socks. ENEMY IDENTIFIED Washer Husk Level 2 Behavior: Slam, soak, tangle Hazard: Sudden spin cycle"Sudden spin cycle," Mateo said. Rosa closed her eyes.
"I hate that I know what that means." Another Washer Husk rolled behind the first. Then another. A fourth bumped into the counter and shook lint from its cracked lid. Above them, a curtain moved in the second-floor window.
"Marcus?" a woman's voice called. Marcus made a sound like someone had punched hope back into his chest.
"Nina!"
"Do not come in the front!" she shouted.
"The machines wake up if the bell rings!" The bell over the laundromat door hung crooked, innocent as a trap. Darren whispered, "Why would the bell matter?" Mateo looked at the door, then at the windows, then at the green trail of detergent. Sort the Pile unfolded across his vision.
Storefront Entry: rigged trigger / service bell / weak glass Side Alley: blocked by dryer stack / monster nest odor / low visibility Fire Escape: retracted ladder / reachable with assembly Nearby materials: delivery van rack, bakery trays, street sign, cable spool, parking meter, detergent spill, broken sign plastic"Fire escape," Mateo said. Rosa followed his eyes. The ladder ended twelve feet above the alley.
"Reachable how?" Mateo tapped the side of the delivery van with the Token Hook. The van answered with labels. Delivery Van Roof Rack: Scrap Value 4 / Ladder-adjacent / Mild bread smell Cable Spool: Scrap Value 3 / rotational / trip hazard Street Sign: Scrap Value 2 / thin metal / reflective Broken Sign Plastic: Scrap Value 2 / light / embarrassing branding"Emergency Assembly," he said.
"Hook ladder." Suggested assembly: Reach Hook, Grade E Cost: 2 Focus Usefulness: Specific but immediate"Specific but immediate is my favorite department," Rosa said. Mateo claimed the roof rack and cable spool. Metal peeled free with a reluctant groan. The street sign snapped off its post. A strip of broken Spin City sign plastic joined the pieces, forming a long hooked pole with cable wound around the base and a ridiculous blue washer logo near the grip. Niko lifted it one-handed.
"Good hook."
"Very civic," Omar said. Niko caught the fire escape ladder on the second try. On the third pull, it slammed down with a rusty shriek. The laundromat went still. The bell over the front door did not ring. Every Washer Husk inside turned toward the alley anyway.
"They heard the ladder," Darren said.
"Laundry has been listening this whole time," Rosa said.
"Move." Niko took the bottom of the ladder with the Jaw Shield raised. Priya climbed first, fast and light. Rosa followed, then Mrs. Vance, then Marcus, who shook so badly Mateo thought he might fall and still climbed like gravity owed him money. Darren started up behind him. A Washer Husk burst through the side window. Glass sprayed across the alley. The machine hit the pavement door-first, bounced, and began spinning. Its hoses whipped outward. One wrapped around Darren's ankle.
"I object!" Darren shouted. The machine yanked. Mateo hooked the hose with the Token Hook and pulled. The rubber stretched like a living thing. The washer's drum spun faster, roaring, its door flashing with gray water and coins. Tangle attack resisted. Washer Husk entering spin cycle.
"Niko!" Mateo shouted. Niko stepped in front of the washer and planted the Jaw Shield. The Washer Husk slammed into the shield. Metal teeth bit into its drum. The alley filled with the screech of appliance against compactor plate. Niko slid back two feet, boots grinding on glass, but he held. Mrs. Vance leaned from the ladder and snapped a bolt into the washer's control panel. The machine dinged. The hose went slack.
Enemy disabled: Washer Husk Level 2 Recovered: Agitator Core x1, Quarter Cache x3, Damp Sock x17 Darren kicked free and climbed with new respect for socks. Mateo looked at the dead washer. The Agitator Core glowed inside it, a fist-sized twist of metal fins and blue water.
"Do not harvest right now," Rosa called from above.
"I wasn't."
"Your posture was."
"My posture has many interests." He harvested it anyway, because useful things rarely arrived when convenient. The effort cost him a stabbing pain behind one eye, but the core came loose. He tucked it into the salvage satchel Rosa had bullied him into carrying. This content has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere. The second-floor window opened.
Nina Cole had a scarf wrapped over her hair, a kitchen knife in one hand, and the exhausted face of someone who had been sick before the apocalypse rudely upgraded itself. Marcus reached her on the fire escape and stopped like he was afraid touching her would prove she was not real. Then she grabbed his shirt and dragged him into a hug. For three seconds, nobody made a joke. Even the Tutorial gave them privacy. Then a blue window appeared in front of Mateo.
RESCUE REQUEST UPDATED Nina Cole located: Alive Additional survivors detected: 9 Threat inside structure: Spin Nest Level 4 Optional objective: Evacuate all survivors before next wave Time to shared objective: 03: 12: 44"Optional," Mateo said. Rosa leaned out the window.
"It says optional, doesn't it?"
"Yes."
"I hate optional objectives." The apartment above Spin City was no longer one apartment. The walls between two units had been broken open with a fire extinguisher and what Nina described as "a chair with moral purpose." Nine people huddled inside: Nina, an elderly neighbor named Mr. Bell, three college students, a mother with a toddler, a delivery driver, and a man who introduced himself as Chad and immediately volunteered that he had a podcast.
"No," Rosa said. Chad blinked.
"I did not ask anything."
"I am answering early." Nina had organized the apartment with ruthless clarity. Wet towels blocked the door gap. Furniture braced the stairwell. Pots collected water from a leaking ceiling pipe. On the kitchen table sat a map drawn on the back of a pizza box. The front stairs were marked BAD. The side alley was marked ALSO BAD. The roof had a question mark and a drawing of a frowning bird.
"The machines started moving about twenty minutes after the sky changed," Nina said. Her voice rasped.
"First the washers. Then the dryers. Then something in the back room. It pulled the water from the floor and made more of them."
"Back room is the nest," Mateo said.
"It blocked the stairs with lint." Darren frowned.
"Lint?" A thump came from below. The floor vibrated. Nina pointed down.
"Angry lint." Mateo opened Sort the Pile. Structure status: unstable but standing Survivor route: fire escape / alley / Mason Street / sanctuary return Blockers: Washer Husks x4, Dryer Shells x2, Spin Nest Level 4 Available materials upstairs: bed frames, extension cords, curtain rods, pots, detergent bottles, coin jar, radiator, door hinges Recommended assembly: Evacuation Sleds, Noise Decoy, Lint Screen Barrier"We do not have to kill the nest," Mateo said.
Rosa let the silence run long enough for the room to hear itself.
"That sounds like growth."
"We need these people out and back before the tower objective. Killing it costs time." Mrs. Vance peered into the hallway.
"If we leave it, does it follow?" The building answered with another thump. Fine dust drifted from the ceiling. Spin Nest behavior: expands through water lines / pursues vibration / hoards coins / hates clean filters"It hates clean filters," Mateo said. Omar raised his mop-blade.
"I have cleaned worse." Rosa looked at him.
"Have you?" Omar considered.
"No. But I have had managers who believed so." They built the plan in ninety seconds. Niko and Priya would hold the alley. Marcus and Nina would help Mr. Bell down the fire escape. Darren would create a lightning pop on the far side of the laundromat to draw the machines away, if his class could do that without insulting anyone. Mrs. Vance would wire the radiator to the extension cords and give the whole stairwell a polite reason not to touch them. Omar would block the apartment door with the Lint Screen Barrier.
Rosa would move people. Mateo would build the decoy.
"Why do I get decoy?" Darren asked.
"Because your lightning talks," Rosa said.
"That feels like discrimination."
"It is task assignment." Mateo assembled the Noise Decoy out of a coin jar, two pots, three curtain rods, the broken Spin City sunglasses, and an alarm clock the college students claimed had not worked since freshman year. Blue light snapped the pieces into a rattling sculpture shaped vaguely like a head. The sunglasses perched on top with terrible confidence.
Assembly complete: Noise Decoy, Grade E+ Effect: attracts low-intelligence enemies with rhythm, coins, and bad taste Warning: may also annoy allies"It looks like Chad's podcast logo," one college student whispered.
"Rude but fair," Chad said. Mateo put the decoy in the hallway and triggered it. The coin jar rattled. The pots clanged. The alarm clock screamed at a frequency that made his fillings remember childhood. Below, the laundromat answered. Washers slammed. Dryers rolled. Something large in the back room dragged itself toward the stairs with a sound like a wet blanket full of bricks.
"Move!" Rosa shouted. The evacuation became a crooked miracle. Nina went first with Mr. Bell, one arm around his waist, Marcus below them on the ladder refusing to blink. The mother handed her toddler down to Priya, who caught the child with one arm and held a tray shield with the other like this was a normal food court promotion. The delivery driver climbed with practiced balance. The college students moved in a shaking chain, each pretending not to be terrified so the next one could pretend too.
Chad got stuck on the windowsill.
"My jacket," he said. Rosa tore it free with both hands.
"Now it is a vest." The Lint Screen Barrier held for forty seconds. It was made from bed frames, curtain rods, wet towels, and every dryer filter Omar could find. It glowed blue-white in the doorway, catching gray lint as it blew up the stairs in ropes. Washer Husks pounded below. A Dryer Shell rammed the landing, its round mouth opening and closing with hot, dusty breath. Then the Spin Nest reached the stairs. It filled the hallway with damp heat.
The thing was a knot of washer drums, dryer doors, hoses, lint mats, quarters, and detergent caps. Its center spun endlessly, a dark circular mouth where clothes had once gone to be forgotten. Water sloshed through its body, blue tutorial light turning the foam bright and wrong. SPIN NEST LEVEL 4 Local hazard: entanglement / heat / water theft Trait: Coin Hunger Weakness: filter disruption, anchored core It slammed into the Lint Screen Barrier. The barrier bent. Omar planted his mop-blade and shoved back. Mrs.
Vance sent current through the radiator line, making the barrier flash. The Spin Nest screamed in static. Coins shot from its body like hail, punching holes in the drywall.
"Last two!" Rosa shouted. Mateo looked back. Nina was on the ladder. Marcus was below her. Mr. Bell was down. The toddler was crying in Priya's arms. Chad was alive and less jacketed. Everyone was almost out. The Spin Nest hit the barrier again. The door frame cracked. Mateo had eight Focus. He could run. He could also see the core. Not clearly.
The Spin Nest's center blurred as it rotated, but Sort the Pile caught the pattern: a heavy coin box wedged behind the central drum, packed with quarters and Civic Token dust. The whole creature pulled itself around that weight. Anchored core.
"Rosa," he said.
"No."
"I did not say it yet."
"Your shoulders did."
"If we leave it, it follows vibration and water lines."
"We can outrun a washing machine."
"Can Mr. Bell?" Rosa hated that. He could see it in her face. She also understood it, which was worse.
"One hit," she said.
"Then I drag you." Mateo claimed the coin jar from the decoy, the radiator pipe, two bed-frame rails, and the Agitator Core from his satchel. Emergency Assembly available: Counterspin Anchor, Grade D Cost: 6 Focus Effect: pins rotating construct briefly; may convert Coin Hunger into salvage drop Downside: if mistimed, user becomes laundry.
"User becomes laundry," Mateo read. Rosa grabbed his vest.
"Do not become laundry."
"Strong guidance." He assembled. The bed-frame rails snapped into a cross. The radiator pipe bent through the center. The Agitator Core locked onto one side, spinning against the Spin Nest's rhythm. The coin jar burst, quarters orbiting the cross like tiny moons. Mateo drove the Counterspin Anchor into the hallway floor. The Spin Nest lunged. The anchor caught it. For one awful second the entire hallway became rotation. Wind tore at Mateo's face. Wet lint slapped the walls.
The Spin Nest's central mouth spun against the anchor, faster and faster, until the quarters around the device flashed blue. Mrs. Vance understood first.
"Hit the box!" she shouted. Omar slid low and hooked the mop-blade into the Spin Nest's side. Rosa braced him. Mateo jammed the Token Hook through the spinning mouth, felt the hook catch metal, and pulled. The coin box tore free. The Spin Nest collapsed into laundry. Actual laundry. Socks, shirts, towels, sheets, one red dress, one pair of jeans with keys in the pocket, and enough quarters to finance a modest afternoon. The Washer Husks downstairs went still. The Dryer Shells slumped.
The apartment went impossibly quiet all at once. Enemy defeated: Spin Nest Level 4 Experience gained: 31 Recovered: Coin Heart x1, Clean Filter Thread x8, Agitator Core x2, Civic Token x2 Sanctuary rescue objective complete: 10 survivors evacuated Bonus: No one became laundry Mateo fell backward against the wall. Rosa seized his vest anyway.
"I said I would drag you."
"I am standing."
"Temporarily." She dragged him to the window on principle. They reached the alley with two hours and forty-one minutes until the shared water tower objective. The route back was slower. Mr. Bell could not run. Nina's fever made her stumble. Marcus kept one arm around her and one eye on every shadow. Priya carried the toddler until the child fell asleep against her shoulder, which seemed unfairly peaceful given the state of the street. Halfway to Mason, a pack of Can Hounds followed them from the east.
Niko turned with the Jaw Shield. Mateo lifted a hand.
"No." He opened the salvage satchel and took out the Pack Scent from the first hound they had killed. Sort the Pile labeled it with new clarity. Pack Scent: lure / marker / territory confusion Suggested use: throw away from evacuation route"Finally," Mateo said, "a tutorial hint that understands trash." He threw the Pack Scent down a side street. The Can Hounds turned as one and chased it, skidding over broken glass. Darren watched them go.
"We defeated them with smell."
"Respect the classics," Rosa said. When the rescue group reached Juniper Sanctuary, the Civic Barricade opened a narrow gate made from refrigerator doors and forklift forks. People cheered when they saw Nina. Marcus cried without making noise. Evan ran to the Notice Board and changed NINA COLE from URGENT to FOUND, underlining it three times. The board pulsed. Rescue request completed.
Morale: +12 Residents: 73 Water: Limited Boundary Integrity: 47% Shared Objective: Hold the Tower begins in 02: 18: 09 Murray approached Mateo with a clipboard.
"Good," Murray said. It came out like the word had escaped him. Mateo blinked.
"Was that appreciation?"
"It was an operational assessment." Rosa leaned toward Mateo.
"Write down the date." Murray ignored her with great effort.
"The mall sent a message through the charter. They report movement toward the tower from the south." Valerie's words appeared on the Notice Board in clean blue script. CROWN MALL FOOD COURT TO JUNIPER TRANSFER STATION: Thirsting enemies approaching Mason Water Tower. Estimated numbers rising. Bring barriers. Bring anyone who can fight. Bring that sanitation worker. Rosa read it aloud.
"Bring that sanitation worker," she repeated. Mateo looked at the wall. At the rescued people. At Nina sitting under the awning while Imani checked her fever. At the piles of sorted salvage. At the new Coin Heart glowing in his hand like a problem pretending to be a prize. His headache was back. His Focus was low. The sanctuary had seventy-three people now, and the tower was about to draw every thirsty thing under the dome. Rosa handed him a bottle of carefully inspected water.
"Drink," she said.
"Bossy."
"Alive people can file complaints." Mateo drank. The water tasted faintly like old pipes, but it was clean enough, and that made it holy. A new blue window unfolded. LEVEL UP Salvage Authority Level 3 Focus increased: 17 New Blueprint available: Mobile Barricade Trait improved: Stubborn Civic Employee II Commentary: Your work order has expanded. Mateo lowered the bottle.
"My work order can get in line," he said. Outside the north wall, the blue dome darkened again. From the direction of the water tower came the distant sound of pipes screaming. Mateo picked up the Token Hook.
"Everyone who can carry metal," he said, "we are going back to Mason."
